KK-31-1Kishkindha Kanda 31.1

स कामिनं दीनमदीनसत्त्वं शोकाभिपन्नं समुदीर्णकोपम्। नरेन्द्रसूनुर्नरदेवपुत्रं रामानुजः पूर्वजमित्युवाच4.31.1।।

sa kāminṃ dīnamadīnasattvṃ śokābhipannṃ samudīrṇakopam| narendrasūnurnaradevaputrṃ rāmānujḥ pūrvajamityuvāca4.31.1||

Translation

नरेन्द्रसूनुः son of a king, सः he, रामानुजः Rama's younger brother, कामिनम् lovesick, दीनम् dejected, अदीनसत्त्वम् indomitable hero, शोकाभिपन्नम् overcome by grief, समुदीर्णकोपम् very angry, नरदेवपुत्रम् son of lord of the people, अग्रजम् elder brother, इति this, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

Seeing the indomitable hero, his elder brother, son of a king, lovesick, dejected and overcome by anger and grief, spoke prince Lakshmana:

KK-31-2Kishkindha Kanda 31.2

न वानरः स्थास्यति साधुवृत्ते न मंस्यते कर्मफलानुषङ्गान्। न भोज्यते वानरराज्यलक्ष्मीं तथाहि नाभिक्रमतेऽस्य बुद्धिः4.31.2।।

na vānarḥ sthāsyati sādhuvṛtte na mṃsyate karmaphalānuṣaṅgān| na bhojyate vānararājyalakṣmīṃ tathāhi nābhikramate'sya buddhiḥ4.31.2||

Translation

वानरः monkey (Sugriva), साधुवृत्ते well conducted, स्थास्यति abide, कर्मफलानुषङ्गान् sharing fruits of action equally, मंस्यते not recognised, वानरराज्यलक्ष्मीम् prosperous kingship of the monkeys, न भोज्यते not enjoy, तथाहि hence, अस्य his, बुद्धिः intellect, नाभिक्रमते not conducted in our favour (search of Sita)

Meaning

'Sugriva has not stuck to the conduct of the virtuous, of sharing the fruits of action equally. He does not realize that he obtained the prosperous kingship of vanaras as a result of your (friendly) action. He does not have the intelligence of conducting himself in your favour (of searching Sita). Therefore he will not enjoy the kingship for long.

KK-31-3Kishkindha Kanda 31.3

मतिक्षयाद्ग्राम्यसुखेषु सक्त स्तव प्रसादाप्रतिकारबुद्धिः। हतोऽग्रजं पश्यतु वीर तस्य न राज्यमेवं विगुणस्य देयम्4.31.3।।

matikṣayādgrāmyasukheṣu sakta stava prasādāpratikārabuddhiḥ| hato'grajṃ paśyatu vīra tasya na rājyamevṃ viguṇasya deyam4.31.3||

Translation

वीर hero, तव your, प्रसादाप्रतिकारबुद्धिः ingratitude to the benefactor, मतिक्षयात् mind grown smaller, ग्राम्यसुखेषु in rustic, vulgar pleasures, सक्तः engaged, हतः killed, अग्रजम् elder brother, तस्य his, पश्यतु let him see, एवम् that way, विगुणस्य desttitute of virtues, राज्यम् kingdom, न देयम् not to be given.

Meaning

'O hero he is too ungrateful to return the favour done to him, Engaged in rustic, vulgar pleasures, he is not thinking of it. Let him see his killed elder brother. Kingship should not be given to an individual who is a destitute of virtues.

KK-31-4Kishkindha Kanda 31.4

न धारये कोपमुदीर्णवेगं निहन्मि सुग्रीवमसत्यमद्य। हरिप्रवीरैस्सह वालिपुत्रो नरेन्द्रपत्न्या विचयं करोतु4.31.4।।

na dhāraye kopamudīrṇavegṃ nihanmi sugrīvamasatyamadya| haripravīraissaha vāliputro narendrapatnyā vicayṃ karotu4.31.4||

Translation

उदीर्णवेगम् overflow, कोपम् anger, न धारये I do not hold, अद्य now, असत्यम् untruthful, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, निहन्मि kill, वालिपुत्रः Vali's son, हरिप्रवीरैः with foremost of monkeys, सह along with, नरेन्द्रपत्न्याः queen, विचयम् search, करोतु let him make.

Meaning

'I cannot hold my overflowing anger. I shall kill this untruthful Sugriva. Let Vali's son along with the foremost of monkeys search for the queen (Sita).'

KK-31-5Kishkindha Kanda 31.5

तमात्तबाणासनमुत्पतन्तं निवेदितार्थं रणचण्डकोपम्। उवाच रामः परवीरहन्ता स्ववेक्षितं सानुनयं च वाक्यम्4.31.5।।

tamāttabāṇāsanamutpatantṃ niveditārthṃ raṇacaṇḍakopam| uvāca rāmḥ paravīrahantā svavekṣitṃ sānunayṃ ca vākyam4.31.5||

Translation

परवीरहन्ता a slayer of enemy heroes, रामः Rama, निवेदितार्थम् who seek refuge, रणचण्डकोपम् fierce in war, आत्तबाणासनम् wielding bow and arrow, उत्पतन्तम् suddenly standing up, तम् him, स्ववेक्षितम् his own angle of vision, सानुनयं च in a conciliatory tone, वाक्यम् these words, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

Rama, a slayer of enemy heroes but not of those who seek his refuge, spoke in a conciliatory tone to Lakshmana who jumped, wielding bow and arrows, inspired with his fierce fighting spirit.

KK-31-6Kishkindha Kanda 31.6

न हि वै त्वद्विधो लोके पापमेवं समाचरेत्। पापमार्येण यो हन्ति स वीरः पुरुषोत्तमः4.31.6।।

na hi vai tvadvidho loke pāpamevṃ samācaret| pāpamāryeṇa yo hanti sa vīrḥ puruṣottamḥ4.31.6||

Translation

त्वद्विधः a man like you, लोके in the world, एवम् in this way, पापम् sin, न समाचरेत् not commit, यः whoever, आर्येण of noble attitude, (कोपम् anger), हन्ति kills, सः वीरः such a hero, पुरुषोत्तमः best of men

KK-31-7Kishkindha Kanda 31.7

नेदमत्र त्वया ग्राह्यं साधुवृत्तेन लक्ष्मण। तां प्रीतिमनुवर्तस्व पूर्ववृत्तं च सङ्गतम्4.31.7।।

nedamatra tvayā grāhyṃ sādhuvṛttena lakṣmaṇa| tāṃ prītimanuvartasva pūrvavṛttṃ ca saṅgatam4.31.7||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, साधुवृत्तेन with good conduct, त्वया by you, अत्र here, इदम् thus, ग्राह्यम् keeping, ताम् that, प्रीतिम् affection, पूर्ववृत्तम् as earlier, सङ्गतं च also friendship, अनुवर्तस्व follow.

Meaning

'O Lakshmana with your good conduct you should not do so. Keeping in view the affectionate friendship extended (by Sugriva) earlier, be friendly.

KK-31-8Kishkindha Kanda 31.8

सामोपहितया वाचा रूक्षाणि परिवर्जयन्। वक्तुमर्हसि सुग्रीवं व्यतीतं कालपर्यये4.31.8।।

sāmopahitayā vācā rūkṣāṇi parivarjayan| vaktumarhasi sugrīvṃ vyatītṃ kālaparyaye4.31.8||

Translation

कालपर्यये not attempting timely action, व्यतीतम् who exceeded, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, रूक्षाणि harsh, परिवर्जयन् avoiding, सामोपहितया adopting conciliating, वाचा with word, वक्तुम् to speak, अर्हसि proper for you.

Meaning

'Sugriva has exceeded the time limit. Avoiding harsh words, you ought to speak to him in a conciliatory manner.

KK-31-9Kishkindha Kanda 31.9

सोऽग्रजेनानुशिष्टार्थो यथावत्पुरुषर्षभः। प्रविवेश पुरीं वीरो लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा4.31.9।।

so'grajenānuśiṣṭārtho yathāvatpuruṣarṣabhḥ| praviveśa purīṃ vīro lakṣmaṇḥ paravīrahā4.31.9||

Translation

अग्रजेन by the elder brother, यथावत् duly, अनुशिष्टार्थः briefed, पुरुषर्षभः bull among men, परवीरहा destroyer of enemies, वीरः hero, सः लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, पुरीम् city, प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

Having been duly briefed by his elder brother, the heroic Lakshmana, destroyer of enemies, a bull among men entered the city.

KK-31-10-11Kishkindha Kanda 31.10–11 (युग्मम्)

ततश्शुभमतिः प्राज्ञो भ्रातुः प्रियहिते रतः। लक्ष्मणः प्रतिसंरब्धो जगाम भवनं कपेः4.31.10।। शक्रबाणासनप्रख्यं धनुः कालान्तकोपमः। प्रगृह्य गिरिशृङ्गाभं मन्दरः सानुमानिव।।4.31.11।।

tataśśubhamatiḥ prājño bhrātuḥ priyahite ratḥ| lakṣmaṇḥ pratisṃrabdho jagāma bhavanṃ kapeḥ4.31.10|| śakrabāṇāsanaprakhyṃ dhanuḥ kālāntakopamḥ| pragṛhya giriśṛṅgābhṃ mandarḥ sānumāniva||4.31.11||

Translation

ततः then, शुभमतिः good hearted man, प्राज्ञ: wise man, प्रियहिते benevolent person, रतः involved, प्रतिसम्रब्धः eager to please, कालान्तकोपमः resembling the anger of the god of death, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, शक्रबाणासनप्रख्यम् comparable to the bow of Indra, गिरिशृङ्गाभम् like a mountain peak, धनुः bow, प्रगृह्य holding, मन्दरः Mandara, सानुमानिव like mountain peak, कपेः monkey's, भवनम् to the mansion, जगाम went.

Meaning

The noblehearted, benevolent and wise Lakshmana, eager to please Rama, picked up his bow looking like a mountain peak, comparable to the bow of Indra and agitated with the anger of the god of Death entered the mansion of Sugriva which stood like the mountain peak of Mandara.

KK-31-12-13Kishkindha Kanda 31.12–13 (युग्मम्)

यथोक्तकारी वचनमुत्तरं चैव सोत्तरम्। बृहस्पतिसमो बुद्ध्या मत्वा रामानुजस्तदा4.31.12।। कामक्रोधसमुत्थेन भ्रातुः कोपाग्निना वृतः। प्रभञ्जन इवाप्रीतः प्रययौ लक्ष्मणस्तदा4.31.13।।

yathoktakārī vacanamuttarṃ caiva sottaram| bṛhaspatisamo buddhyā matvā rāmānujastadā4.31.12|| kāmakrodhasamutthena bhrātuḥ kopāgninā vṛtḥ| prabhañjana ivāprītḥ prayayau lakṣmaṇastadā4.31.13||

Translation

तदा then, यथोक्तकारी obedient, रामानुजः Rama's younger brother, भ्रातुः brother's, कामक्रोधसमुत्थेन inspired by love and anger, कोपाग्निना by the fire of anger, वृतः encompassed, अप्रीतः displeased, बुद्ध्या in his mind, बृहस्पतिसमः like Brihaspati, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, सोत्तरम् answer to be given, उत्तरं वचनम् words of reply, मत्वा thinking over, तदा then, प्रभञ्जन इव like stormy wind, प्रययौ marched.

Meaning

Then Lakshmana, obedient, intelligent like Brihaspati, like a tempest, encompassed by the fire of anger and deliberating in his mind as to the possible questions from Sugriva and the reply from him.

KK-31-14-15Kishkindha Kanda 31.14–15 (युग्मम्)

सालतालाश्वकर्णांश्च तरसा पातयन्बहून्। पर्यस्यन्गिरिकूटानि द्रुमानन्यांश्च वेगतः4.31.14।। शिलाश्च शकलीकुर्वन्पद्भ्यां गज इवाशुगः। दूरामेकपदं त्यक्त्वा ययौ कार्यवशाद्द्रुतम्4.31.15।।

sālatālāśvakarṇāṃśca tarasā pātayanbahūn| paryasyangirikūṭāni drumānanyāṃśca vegatḥ4.31.14|| śilāśca śakalīkurvanpadbhyāṃ gaja ivāśugḥ| dūrāmekapadṃ tyaktvā yayau kāryavaśāddrutam4.31.15||

Translation

आशुगः swift, गज इव like an elephant, वेगतः speedily, तरसा vigorously, सालतालाश्वकर्णांश्च sala, tala, and asvakarna, पातयन् felling trees, अन्यान् and others, द्रुमांश्च trees, गिरिकूटानि mountain rocks, बलात् forcibly, पर्यस्यन् turning them, पद्भ्याम् with his feet, शिलाः rocks, शकलीकुर्वन् breaking to pieces, दूरम् a distance, एकपदे with one foot, त्यक्त्वा pushing, कार्यवशात् to carry out the task, द्रुतम् quickly, ययौ went.

Meaning

'Lakshmana rushed on foot speedily, cutting the branches of sala, tala and asvakarna and other trees on the way and forcibly turning and crushing the mountain rocks into pieces with a single foot, like a swiftmoving elephant taking long strides, to carry out the task.

KK-31-16Kishkindha Kanda 31.16

तामपश्यद्बलाकीर्णां हरिराजमहापुरीम्। दुर्गामिक्ष्वाकुशार्दूलः किष्किन्धां गिरिसङ्गटे4.31.16।।

tāmapaśyadbalākīrṇāṃ harirājamahāpurīm| durgāmikṣvākuśārdūlḥ kiṣkindhāṃ girisaṅgaṭe4.31.16||

Translation

इक्ष्वाकुशार्दूलः tiger of the Ikshvaku race, गिरिसङ्कटे in between the mountains, बलाकीर्णाम् filled by the army, दुर्गाम् inaccessible, हरिराजमहापुरीम् vanara king's capital city, ताम् that, किष्किन्धाम् Kishkinda, अपश्यत् saw.

Meaning

The tiger of the Ikshvaku race saw the inaccessible Kishkinda, the capital of vanara kingdom, located between mountains and fortified with the army.

KK-31-17Kishkindha Kanda 31.17

रोषात्प्रस्फुरमाणोष्ठ स्सुग्रीवं प्रति लक्ष्मणः। ददर्श वानरान्भीमाकनिष्किन्धाया बहिश्चरान्4.31.17।।

roṣātprasphuramāṇoṣṭha ssugrīvṃ prati lakṣmaṇḥ| dadarśa vānarānbhīmākaniṣkindhāyā bahiścarān4.31.17||

Translation

सुग्रीवम् प्रति Sugriva in turn, रोषात् due to anger, प्रस्फुरमाणोष्ठः lips trembling, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, किष्किन्धायाः Kishkinda's, बहिश्चरान् front guards, भीमान् fierceful ones, वानरान् monkeys, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

His lips trembling in anger, Lakshmana saw fierceful monkey guards of Sugriva at the entrance of Kishkinda city.

KK-31-18Kishkindha Kanda 31.18

तं दृष्ट्वा वानरास्सर्वे लक्ष्मणं पुरुषर्षभम्। शैलशृङ्गाणि शतशः प्रवृद्धांश्च महीरुहान्4.31.18।। जगृहुः कुञ्जरप्रख्या वानराः पर्वतान्तरे।

tṃ dṛṣṭvā vānarāssarve lakṣmaṇṃ puruṣarṣabham| śailaśṛṅgāṇi śataśḥ pravṛddhāṃśca mahīruhān4.31.18|| jagṛhuḥ kuñjaraprakhyā vānarāḥ parvatāntare|

Translation

पर्वतान्तरे in between the mountains, कुञ्जरप्रख्याः comparable to elephants in size, सर्वे all, वानराः monkeys, पुरुषर्षभम् bull among men, तं लक्ष्मणम् that Lakshmana, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, शतशः in hundreds, शैलशृङ्गाणि boulders of rocks, प्रवृद्धान् fully grown, महीरुहान् च huge trees, जगृहुः seized.

Meaning

Hundreds of monkeys of the size of elephants stood holding huge trees and boulders of rocks on seeing Lakshmana, the bull among men.

KK-31-19Kishkindha Kanda 31.19

तान्गृहीतप्रहरणान्सर्वान्दृष्ट्वा तु लक्ष्मणः4.31.19।। बभूव द्विगुणं क्रुद्धो बह्विन्धन इवानलः।

tāngṛhītapraharaṇānsarvāndṛṣṭvā tu lakṣmaṇḥ4.31.19|| babhūva dviguṇṃ kruddho bahvindhana ivānalḥ|

Translation

लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, गृहीतप्रहरणान् seized weapons, तान् them, हरीन् monkeys, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, बह्विन्धनः lots of firewood, अनलः इव like fire, द्विगुणम् doubled, क्रुद्धः angry, बभूव became.

Meaning

On seeing the monkeys wielding weapons, Lakshmana's anger doubled like logs of firewood put to burning.

KK-31-20Kishkindha Kanda 31.20

तं ते भयपरीताङ्गाः क्रुद्धं दृष्ट्वा प्लवङ्गमाः4.31.20।। कालमृत्युयुगान्ताभं शतशो विद्रुता दिशः।

tṃ te bhayaparītāṅgāḥ kruddhṃ dṛṣṭvā plavaṅgamāḥ4.31.20|| kālamṛtyuyugāntābhṃ śataśo vidrutā diśḥ|

Translation

शतशः in hundreds, ते they, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, क्रुद्धम् enraged, कालमृत्युयुगान्ताभम् seemed like the god of death at the end of creation, तम् him, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, भयपरीताङ्गाः limbs shaking in fear, दिशः directions, विद्रुताः fled.

Meaning

Seeing enraged Lakshmana, who looked like a veritable god of Death at the time of dissolution of the universe, hundreds of monkeys, their limbs trembling in fear ran in different directions.

KK-31-21Kishkindha Kanda 31.21

ततस्सुग्रीवभवनं प्रविश्य हरिपुङ्गवाः4.31.21।। क्रोधमागमनं चैव लक्ष्मणस्य न्यवेदयन्।

tatassugrīvabhavanṃ praviśya haripuṅgavāḥ4.31.21|| krodhamāgamanṃ caiva lakṣmaṇasya nyavedayan|

Translation

ततः then, हरिपुङ्गवा: monkeychiefs, सुग्रीवभवनम् to Sugriva's mansion, प्रविश्य having entered, लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, आगमनम् about the arrival, क्रोधं चैव and his anger, न्यवेदयन् reported.

Meaning

Having entered Sugriva's palace, the monkeychiefs reported the arrival of angry Lakshmana.

KK-31-22Kishkindha Kanda 31.22

तारया सहितः कामी सक्तः कपिवृषो रहः4.31.22।। न तेषां कपिवीराणां शुश्राव वचनं तदा।

tārayā sahitḥ kāmī saktḥ kapivṛṣo rahḥ4.31.22|| na teṣāṃ kapivīrāṇāṃ śuśrāva vacanṃ tadā|

Translation

तदा then, कामी passionate, तारया with Tara, सहितः along with, रहः in privy, सक्तः engrossed in love, कपिवृषः bull among monkeys, तेषाम् their, कपिवीराणाम् of the monkeychiefs, वचनम् words, न शुश्राव not heed.

Meaning

But Sugriva who was engrossed in overtures with passionate Tara, did not heed the words of the monkeychiefs.

KK-31-23Kishkindha Kanda 31.23

ततस्सचिवसन्दिष्टा हरयो रोमहर्षणाः। गिरिकुञ्जर मेघाभा नगर्या निर्ययुस्तदा।।4.31.23।।

tatassacivasandiṣṭā harayo romaharṣaṇāḥ| girikuñjara meghābhā nagaryā niryayustadā||4.31.23||

Translation

ततः then, रोमहर्षणाः who causes horripilation, गिरिकुञ्जरमेघाभाः fierceful like the mountains, elephants and clouds, हरयः the monkeys, सचिवसन्दिष्टाः commaded by the ministers, तदा then, नगरात् from the city, निर्ययुः they left.

Meaning

Commanded by the ministers, the monkeys who looked like fierce mountains, elephants and clouds that caused horripilation, left the place at once.

KK-31-24Kishkindha Kanda 31.24

नखदंष्ट्रायुधा घोरास्सर्वे विकृतदर्शनाः4.31.24।। सर्वे शार्दूलदर्पाश्च सर्वे च विकृताननाः।

nakhadṃṣṭrāyudhā ghorāssarve vikṛtadarśanāḥ4.31.24|| sarve śārdūladarpāśca sarve ca vikṛtānanāḥ|

Translation

घोरा: dreadful, नखदंष्ट्रायुधाः nails and teeth as weapons, सर्वे all, विकृतदर्शनाः horrifying to look, सर्वे all, शार्दूलदर्पा: proud as tigers, सर्वे च and all, विकृताननाः of deformed faces.

Meaning

The monkeys, their faces, deformed, their nails and teeth like weapons were dreadful and horrifying in appearance, proud as tigers

KK-31-25Kishkindha Kanda 31.25

दशनागबलाः केचित्केचिद्दशगुणोत्तराः4.31.25।। केचिन्नागसहस्रस्य बभूवुस्तुल्यविक्रमाः।

daśanāgabalāḥ kecitkeciddaśaguṇottarāḥ4.31.25|| kecinnāgasahasrasya babhūvustulyavikramāḥ|

Translation

केचित् some, दशनागबलाः possessed the strength of ten elephants, केचित् some, दशगुणोत्तराः of a hundred elephants in strength, केचित् some, नागसहस्रस्य of a thousand elephants in strength, तुल्यविक्रमाः equal in valour, बभूवुः were.

Meaning

Of them some possessed the strength of ten, some a hundred and some a thousand elephants. All of them were of equal valour.

KK-31-26Kishkindha Kanda 31.26

कृत्स्नांहि कपिभिर्व्याप्तां द्रुमहस्सैर्महाबलैः4.31.26।। अपश्यल्लक्ष्मणः क्रुद्धः किष्किन्धां तां दुरासदाम्।

kṛtsnāṃhi kapibhirvyāptāṃ drumahassairmahābalaiḥ4.31.26|| apaśyallakṣmaṇḥ kruddhḥ kiṣkindhāṃ tāṃ durāsadām|

Translation

कृत्स्नां entire palace, क्रुद्धः angry, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, द्रुमहस्तै: holding trees in hands, महाबलैः mighty strong, कपिभिः monkeys, व्याप्ताम् huge, दुरासदाम् inaccessible, तां किष्किन्धाम् that Kishkinda, अपश्यत् saw.

Meaning

Enraged Lakshmana saw the huge inacccessible city of Kishkinda filled with mighty strong and fierce monkeys holding trees in hand.

KK-31-27Kishkindha Kanda 31.27

ततस्ते हरयस्सर्वे प्राकारपरिघान्तरात्4.31.27।। निष्क्रम्योदग्रसत्त्वास्तु तस्थुराविष्कृतं तदा।

tataste harayassarve prākāraparighāntarāt4.31.27|| niṣkramyodagrasattvāstu tasthurāviṣkṛtṃ tadā|

Translation

ततः then, उदग्रसत्त्वाः with marked strength, सर्वे all, ते हरयः the monkeys, प्राकारपरिघान्तरात् crossing the ironboundary from beneath, निष्क्रम्य came out, तदा then, अविष्कृतम् made their appearance, तस्थुः stood.

Meaning

The mighty monkeys came out of the entrance of the ironboundary wall from beneath and made their appearance and stood in full attention.

KK-31-28Kishkindha Kanda 31.28

सुग्रीवस्य प्रमादं च पूर्वजं चार्तमात्मवान्4.31.28।। बुद्ध्वा कोपवशं वीरः पुनरेव जगाम सः।

sugrīvasya pramādṃ ca pūrvajṃ cārtamātmavān4.31.28|| buddhvā kopavaśṃ vīrḥ punareva jagāma sḥ|

Translation

आत्मवान् sensible, सः वीरः that warrior, सुग्रीवस्य Sugriva's, प्रमादम् dereliction, पूर्वजं च and his elder brother, आर्तम् helpless, बुद्ध्वा recognising, पुनरेव once again, क्रोधवशम् under the grip of anger, जगाम was drawn.

Meaning

The sensible warrior, recognising Sugriva's dereliction of duty and his own brother's agony once again flew into fury.

KK-31-29Kishkindha Kanda 31.29

स दीर्घोष्णमहोच्छवासः कोपसंरक्तलोचनः4.31.29।। बभूव नरशार्दूल स्सधूम इव पावकः।

sa dīrghoṣṇamahocchavāsḥ kopasṃraktalocanḥ4.31.29|| babhūva naraśārdūla ssadhūma iva pāvakḥ|

Translation

दीर्घोष्णमहोच्छवासः sighing with hot deep breath, कोपसंरक्तलोचनः with his eyes turned red out of anger, नरशार्दूलः tiger among men, सः he, सधूमः with smoke, पावकः इव like fire, बभूव appeared.

Meaning

Sighing hot, deep breath, eyes turned red in anger, this tiger among men appeared like fire with smoke (The sigh was smoke and red eyes, fire).

KK-31-30Kishkindha Kanda 31.30

बाणशल्यस्फुरज्जिह्वस्सायकासनभोगवान्4.31.30।। स्वतेजोविषसङ्घातः पञ्चास्य इव पन्नगः।

bāṇaśalyasphurajjihvassāyakāsanabhogavān4.31.30|| svatejoviṣasaṅghātḥ pañcāsya iva pannagḥ|

Translation

बाणशल्यस्फुरज्जिह्वः the iron nails fixed on the arrows as moving fangs, सायकासनभोगवान् bow as the snake, स्वतेजोविषसङ्घातः his own brightness as poison, पञ्चास्यः fivehooded, पन्नगः इव snake like.

Meaning

His bow was like the hood of a snake,with the iron nails fixed on the tip of his arrows like moving fangs and his own brightness like the venom of the fivehooded snake.

KK-31-31Kishkindha Kanda 31.31

तं दीप्तमिव कालाग्निं नागेन्द्रमिव कोपितम्4.31.31।। समासाद्याङ्गदस्त्रासाद्विषादमगमद्भृशम्।

tṃ dīptamiva kālāgniṃ nāgendramiva kopitam4.31.31|| samāsādyāṅgadastrāsādviṣādamagamadbhṛśam|

Translation

अङ्गदः Angada, दीप्तम् glowing, कालाग्निम् इव like fire at the dissolution of the world, कोपितम् enraged, नागेन्द्रमिव like lord of snakes, तम् him, समासाद्य on nearing, त्रासात् with fear, भृशम् greatly, विषादम् worry, अगमत् felt.

Meaning

Dismayed, Angada approached Lakshmana, who was glowing like fire at the time of dissolution of the world and enraged like the lord of serpents.

KK-31-32Kishkindha Kanda 31.32

सोऽङ्गदं रोषताम्राक्षस्सन्दिदेश महायशाः4.31.32।। सुग्रीवः कथ्यतां वत्स ममागमनमित्युत।

so'ṅgadṃ roṣatāmrākṣassandideśa mahāyaśāḥ4.31.32|| sugrīvḥ kathyatāṃ vatsa mamāgamanamityuta|

Translation

रोषताम्राक्षः eyes red with anger, महायशाः renowned, सः he, अङ्गदम् to Angada, वत्स child, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, मम about my, आगमनम् arrival, कथ्यताम् inform, इति उत thus, सन्दिदेश sent word.

Meaning

Renowned Lakshmana, with his eyes turned red in anger said to Angada 'O dear, inform Sugriva, about my arrival'.

KK-31-33-34Kishkindha Kanda 31.33–34 (युग्मम्)

एष रामानुजः प्राप्तस्वत्सकाशमरिन्दम4.31.33।। भ्रातुर्व्यसनसन्तप्तो द्वारि तिष्ठति लक्ष्मणः। तस्य वाक्यं यदि रुचिः क्रियतां साधु वानर4.31.34।। इत्युक्त्वा शीघ्रमागच्छ वत्स वाक्यमरिन्दम।

eṣa rāmānujḥ prāptasvatsakāśamarindama4.31.33|| bhrāturvyasanasantapto dvāri tiṣṭhati lakṣmaṇḥ| tasya vākyṃ yadi ruciḥ kriyatāṃ sādhu vānara4.31.34|| ityuktvā śīghramāgaccha vatsa vākyamarindama|

Translation

अरिन्दम O subduer of enemies, वत्स dear, भ्रातुः brother's, व्यसनसन्तप्तः burning in grief, रामानुजः Rama's younger brother, एषः लक्ष्मणः this Lakshmana, त्वत्सकाशम् to your presence, प्राप्तः arrived, द्वारि at the entrance, तिष्ठति stands, वानर Vanara, रुचिः यदि if you like, तस्य his, वाक्ये words, साधु well, क्रियताम् do accordingly, इति thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, शीघ्रम् swiftly, आगच्छ come.

Meaning

'O subduer of enemies speak in this way: 'Lakshmana, the dear younger brother of Rama has come to you and waits for your presence at the entrance, burning in grief of his elder brother. Well, if you like to hear his words, do as you please.' 'Return swiftly after saying so.'

KK-31-35Kishkindha Kanda 31.35

लक्ष्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा शोकाविष्टोऽङ्गदोऽब्रवीत्। पितुस्समीपमागम्य सौमित्रिरयमागतः4.31.35।।

lakṣmaṇasya vacḥ śrutvā śokāviṣṭo'ṅgado'bravīt| pitussamīpamāgamya saumitrirayamāgatḥ4.31.35||

Translation

लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, वचः words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, शोकाविष्ट: griefstricken, अङ्गदः Angada, पितुः father's, समीपम् near, आगम्य reached, अयम् this, सौमित्रिः Saumitri, आगतः has come, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

On hearing Lakshmana's words Angada became sad. He approached his father (Sugriva) and said 'Saumitri has come'. (This sloka appears an interpolation).

KK-31-36Kishkindha Kanda 31.36

अथाङ्गदस्तस्य वचो निशम्य सम्भ्रान्तभावः परिदीनवक्त्रः। निपत्य तूर्णं नृपतेस्तरस्वी ततः रुमायाश्चरणौ ववन्दे4.31.36।।

athāṅgadastasya vaco niśamya sambhrāntabhāvḥ paridīnavaktrḥ| nipatya tūrṇṃ nṛpatestarasvī tatḥ rumāyāścaraṇau vavande4.31.36||

Translation

अथ then, तरस्वी powerful, अङ्गदः Angada, तस्य his, वच: word, निशम्य on hearing, सम्भ्रान्तभावः agitated in mind, परदीनवक्त्रः face turned pale, निपत्य prostrating, तूर्णं at once, नृपतेः king's, ततः then, रुमायाः Ruma's, चरणौ feet, ववन्दे offered salutations.

Meaning

On hearing Lakshmana's words powerful Angada felt agitated. His face turned pale. He went and prostrated at once to the king and then to the queen, Ruma.

KK-31-37Kishkindha Kanda 31.37

संङ्गृह्य पादौ पितुरग्र्यतेजाः जग्राह मातुः पुनरेव पादौ। पादौ रुमायाश्च निपीडयित्वा निवेदयामास ततस्तमर्थम्4.31.37।।

sṃṅgṛhya pādau pituragryatejāḥ jagrāha mātuḥ punareva pādau| pādau rumāyāśca nipīḍayitvā nivedayāmāsa tatastamartham4.31.37||

Translation

अग्रतेजाः highly brilliant Angada, पितुः father's, पादौ feet, सङ्गृह्य holding, पुनरेव again, मातुः mother's, पादौ feet, जग्राह held, रुमायाः Ruma's, पादौ च feet, निपीडयित्वा pressing, तमर्थम् the message, ततः then, निवेदयामास revealed.

Meaning

Highly brilliant Angada holding his father's feet first, then mother's and thereafter Ruma's, reported the matter to Sugriva.

KK-31-38Kishkindha Kanda 31.38

स निद्रामदसंवीतो वानरो न विबुद्धवान्। बभूव मदमत्तश्च मदनेन च मोहितः4.31.38।।

sa nidrāmadasṃvīto vānaro na vibuddhavān| babhūva madamattaśca madanena ca mohitḥ4.31.38||

Translation

निद्रामदसंवीतः overcome by drinks and sleep, वानरः monkey, न विबुद्धवान् he did not come to his senses, मदमत्तश्च intoxicated, मदनेन च overwhelmed by love, मोहितः deluded, बभूव appeared.

Meaning

The monkey was too drowsy with drink, too intoxicated with passion to come back to his senses.

KK-31-39Kishkindha Kanda 31.39

ततः किलकिलां चक्रुर्लक्ष्मणं प्रेक्ष्य वानराः। प्रसादयन्तस्तं क्रुद्धं भयमोहितचेतसः4.31.39।।

tatḥ kilakilāṃ cakrurlakṣmaṇṃ prekṣya vānarāḥ| prasādayantastṃ kruddhṃ bhayamohitacetasḥ4.31.39||

Translation

ततः then, क्रुद्धम् angry, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, प्रेक्ष्य looking, वानराः monkeys, भयमोहितचेतसः feeling scared at heart, तम् them, प्रसादयन्तः pleasing him, किलकिलाम् चक्रुः made a noise.

Meaning

Looking at angry Lakshmana, and scared at heart, the monkeys started making a noise in order to please him.

KK-31-40Kishkindha Kanda 31.40

ते महौघनिभं दृष्ट्वा वज्राशनिसमस्वनम्। सिंहनादं समं चक्रुर्लक्ष्मणस्य समीपतः4.31.40।।

te mahaughanibhṃ dṛṣṭvā vajrāśanisamasvanam| siṃhanādṃ samṃ cakrurlakṣmaṇasya samīpatḥ4.31.40||

Translation

ते they, दृष्ट्वा seeing, महौघनिभम् looked like a mighty flood, वज्राशनिसमस्वनम् noise like a thunderbolt, सिंहनादम् lion's roar, समम् like, लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, समीपतः near, चक्रुः made.

Meaning

They saw Lakshmana advancing like a mighty flood and went near him making sounds like the thunderbolt or a lion.

KK-31-41Kishkindha Kanda 31.41

तेन शब्देन महता प्रत्यबुध्यत वानरः। मदविह्वलताम्राक्षो व्याकुलस्रग्विभूषणः4.31.41।।

tena śabdena mahatā pratyabudhyata vānarḥ| madavihvalatāmrākṣo vyākulasragvibhūṣaṇḥ4.31.41||

Translation

महता by the great, तेन शब्देन by that sound, वानरः monkey, मदविह्वलताम्राक्षः having red eyes due to intoxication, व्याकुलस्रग्विभूषणः ornaments and garlands in disarry, प्रत्यबुध्यत awakened.

Meaning

By the great sound (of the monkeys) the drunken redeyed vanara king awakened, his garlands and ornaments in disarray.

KK-31-42-43Kishkindha Kanda 31.42–43 (युग्मम्)

अथाङ्गदवचः श्रुत्वा तेनैव च समागतौ। मन्त्रिणौ वानरेन्द्रस्य सम्मतौ दारदर्शिनौ4.31.42।। प्लक्षश्चैव प्रभावश्च मन्त्रिणावर्थधर्मयोः। वक्तुमुच्चावचं प्राप्तं लक्ष्मणं तौ शशंसतुः4.31.43।।

athāṅgadavacḥ śrutvā tenaiva ca samāgatau| mantriṇau vānarendrasya sammatau dāradarśinau4.31.42|| plakṣaścaiva prabhāvaśca mantriṇāvarthadharmayoḥ| vaktumuccāvacṃ prāptṃ lakṣmaṇṃ tau śaśṃsatuḥ4.31.43||

Translation

अथ then, अङ्गदवचः Angada's words, श्रुत्वा hearing, तेनैव along with him, समागतौ both of them assembled, सम्मतौ दारदर्शिनौ both of them permitted to have audience with womenfolk, अर्थधर्मयोः in matters of wealth and righteousness, मन्त्रिणौ ministers, प्लक्षश्चैव Plaksha and, प्रभावश्च Prabhava also, तौ both, वानरेन्द्रस्य the king's, मन्त्रिणौ both ministers, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana's, प्राप्तम् arrived, वक्तुम् to tell, उच्चावचम् to talk , शंसतुः both of them spoke.

Meaning

On hearing Angada's words the two ministers named Plaksha and Prabhava who were perrmitted to have audience with the queens went to the harem on invitation from Angada. They reported to Sugriva about the arrival of Lakshmana who had come to speak to him about matters regading wealth and righteousness.

KK-31-44Kishkindha Kanda 31.44

प्रसादयित्वा सुग्रीवं वचनैस्सामनिश्चितैः। आसीनं पर्युपासीनौ यथा शक्रं मरुत्पतिम्4.31.44।।

prasādayitvā sugrīvṃ vacanaissāmaniścitaiḥ| āsīnṃ paryupāsīnau yathā śakrṃ marutpatim4.31.44||

Translation

आसीनम् seated, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, मरुत्पतिम् lord of Maruts, शक्रं यथा like Indra, पर्युपासीनौ both seated close, सामनिश्चितैः by conciliatory words, वचनैः with words, प्रसादयित्वा after pleasing.

Meaning

Both of them sat close by Sugriva who was like Indra and said these pleasing words:

KK-31-45Kishkindha Kanda 31.45

सत्यसन्धौ महाभागौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। वयस्यभावं सम्प्राप्तौ राज्यार्हौ राज्यदायिनौ4.31.45।।

satyasandhau mahābhāgau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau| vayasyabhāvṃ samprāptau rājyārhau rājyadāyinau4.31.45||

Translation

सत्यसन्धौ both true to their promise, महाभागौ both venerable, राज्यार्हौ deserving kingdom, राज्यदायिनौ have given sovereignty, भ्रातरौ two brothers, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, वयस्यभावम् friendship, सम्प्राप्तौ extended .

Meaning

'Rama and Lakshmana, both the brothers venerable and true to their promise, have conferred on you sovereignty and have extended friendship.'

KK-31-46Kishkindha Kanda 31.46

तयोरेको धनुष्पाणिर्द्वारि तिष्ठति लक्ष्मणः। यस्य भीताः प्रवेपन्तो नादान्मुञ्चन्ति वानराः4.31.46।।

tayoreko dhanuṣpāṇirdvāri tiṣṭhati lakṣmaṇḥ| yasya bhītāḥ pravepanto nādānmuñcanti vānarāḥ4.31.46||

Translation

तयोः between the two, एकः only, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, धनुष्पाणिः wielding a bow in his hand, द्वारि at the entrance, तिष्ठति is standing, यस्य his, भीताः frightened ones, प्रवेपन्तः are trembling, वानराः monkeys, नादान् sounds, मुञ्चन्ति are producing.

Meaning

'Of the two, only Lakshmana is standing at the entrance wielding his bow in hand. The monkeys are trembling in fear and running about, making a loud noise'.

KK-31-47Kishkindha Kanda 31.47

स एष राघवभ्राता लक्ष्मणो वाक्यसारथिः। व्यवसायरथः प्राप्तस्तस्य रामस्य शासनात्4.31.47।।

sa eṣa rāghavabhrātā lakṣmaṇo vākyasārathiḥ| vyavasāyarathḥ prāptastasya rāmasya śāsanāt4.31.47||

Translation

तस्य his, रामस्य Rama's, शासनात् by the command, राघवभ्राता Rama's brother, सः एषः लक्ष्मणः that Lakshmna, वाक्यसारथिः his words as a charioteer, व्यवसायरथः his work a chariot, पाप्तः has come.

Meaning

'By the command of Rama, his brother has come to you, Rama's words as charioteer and his work as chariot'.

KK-31-48Kishkindha Kanda 31.48

अयं च दयितो राजंस्ताराया स्तनयोऽङ्गदः। लक्ष्मणेन सकाशं ते प्रेषितस्त्वरयाऽनघ4.31.48।।

ayṃ ca dayito rājṃstārāyā stanayo'ṅgadḥ| lakṣmaṇena sakāśṃ te preṣitastvarayā'nagha4.31.48||

Translation

अनघ O sinless one, राजन् O king, तारायाः Tara's, तनय: son, दयितः dear one, अयं अङ्गदः this Angada, लक्ष्मणेन by Lakshmana, त्वरया at once, ते सकाशम् to your presence, प्रेषितः is sent to you.

Meaning

'O blameless king Tara's son, Angada, has sent us into your presence. Lakshmana has come.'

KK-31-49Kishkindha Kanda 31.49

सोऽयं रोषपरीताक्षो द्वारि तिष्ठति वीर्यवान्। वानरान्वानरपते चक्षुषा प्रदहन्निव4.31.49।।

so'yṃ roṣaparītākṣo dvāri tiṣṭhati vīryavān| vānarānvānarapate cakṣuṣā pradahanniva4.31.49||

Translation

वानरपते O lord of vanaras, वीर्यवान् valiant, अयम् this person, रोषपरीताक्षः angereyed, चक्षुषा with his eyes, वानरान् monkeys, प्रदहन्निव as if burning, द्वारि at the entrance, तिष्ठति is waiting.

Meaning

'O lord of monkeys Valiant Lakshmana is standing at the entrance,eyes filled with anger as if he would burn the vanaras'.

KK-31-50Kishkindha Kanda 31.50

तस्य मूर्ध्ना प्रणम्य त्वं सपुत्रस्सहबन्धुभिः। गच्छ शीघ्रं महाराज रोषो ह्यस्य निवर्त्यताम्4.31.50।।

tasya mūrdhnā praṇamya tvṃ saputrassahabandhubhiḥ| gaccha śīghrṃ mahārāja roṣo hyasya nivartyatām4.31.50||

Translation

महाराज O great king, त्वम् you, सपुत्रः with your son, सहबान्धवः with your relations, शीघ्रम् quickly, गच्छ go, मूर्ध्ना face, तस्य his, प्रणम्य after saluting, अद्य now, रोषः anger, निवर्त्यताम् may be averted.

Meaning

'O great king Go at once with your son and relations, salute him now and avert his anger'.

KK-31-51Kishkindha Kanda 31.51

यदाह रामो धर्मात्मा तत्कुरुष्व समाहितः। राजं स्तिष्ठस्व समये भव सत्यप्रतिश्रवाः4.31.51।।

yadāha rāmo dharmātmā tatkuruṣva samāhitḥ| rājṃ stiṣṭhasva samaye bhava satyapratiśravāḥ4.31.51||

Translation

राजन् O king, धर्मात्मा righteous, रामः Rama, यत् whatever, आह says तत् that, समाहितः with a steady mind, कुरुष्व you may do, सत्यप्रतिश्रवाः be true to your promise, स्वसमये your agreement, भव you.

Meaning

'O king be true to your promise to his brother, righteous Rama without fail. Honour the agreement.' इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे एकत्रिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the thirtyfirst sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
