KK-26-1Kishkindha Kanda 26.1

ततश्शोकाभिसन्तप्तं सुग्रीवं क्लिन्नवाससम्। शाखामृगमहामात्राः परिवार्योपतस्थिरे4.26.1।।

tataśśokābhisantaptṃ sugrīvṃ klinnavāsasam| śākhāmṛgamahāmātrāḥ parivāryopatasthire4.26.1||

Translation

ततः then, शोकाभिसन्तप्तम् griefstricken , क्लिन्नवाससम् whose clothes were wet, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, शाखामृगमहामात्राः chiefs of army of monkeys, परिवार्य surrounded, उपतस्थिरे waited in attendance.

Meaning

Then the chiefs of the army of the monkeys surrounded Sugriva, who was overcome with grief and was still in wet clothes (since he had taken bath at the conclusion of the funeral rites) and waited.

KK-26-2Kishkindha Kanda 26.2

अभिगम्य महाबाहुं राममक्लिष्टकारिणम्। स्थिताः प्राञ्जलयस्सर्वे पितामहमिवर्षयः4.26.2।।

abhigamya mahābāhuṃ rāmamakliṣṭakāriṇam| sthitāḥ prāñjalayassarve pitāmahamivarṣayḥ4.26.2||

Translation

सर्वे all, पितामहम् creator Brahma, ऋषयः इव like sages, महाबाहुम् longarmed, अक्लिष्टकारिणम् who removes sorrow, रामम् to Rama, अभिगम्य having approached, प्राञ्जलयः with folded hands, स्थिताः stood.

Meaning

Just like sages stand before the creator Brahma, all the monkeys stood with folded hands before the longarmed Rama, the remover of sorrow.

KK-26-3Kishkindha Kanda 26.3

ततः काञ्चनशैलाभ स्तरुणार्कनिभाननः। अब्रवीत्प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः4.26.3।।

tatḥ kāñcanaśailābha staruṇārkanibhānanḥ| abravītprāñjalirvākyṃ hanūmānmārutātmajḥ4.26.3||

Translation

ततः then, काञ्चनशैलाभः of the hue of the golden mountain, तरुणार्कनिभाननः whose face was like the rising Sun, मारुतात्मजः son of the Windgod, हनूमान् Hanuman, प्राञ्जलिः with folded hands, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Hanuman, son of the Windgod, glowing like a golden mountain, whose face resembled the rising Sun addressed Rama with folded hands:

KK-26-4Kishkindha Kanda 26.4

भवत्प्रसादात्सुग्रीवः पितृपैतामहं महत्। वानराणां सुदुष्प्रापं प्राप्तो राज्यमिदं प्रभो4.26.4।।

bhavatprasādātsugrīvḥ pitṛpaitāmahṃ mahat| vānarāṇāṃ suduṣprāpṃ prāpto rājyamidṃ prabho4.26.4||

Translation

प्रभो O lord, सुग्रीव: Sugriva, सुदुष्प्रापम् that which is difficult to acquire, वानराणाम् of monkeys, इदम् this, पितृपैतामहम् ancestral, महत् great, राज्यम् kingdom, भवत्प्रसादात् by your grace, प्राप्तः has obtained.

Meaning

'O Lord by your grace Sugriva inherited the ancestral kingdom which would have been otherwise difficult.

KK-26-5-6Kishkindha Kanda 26.5–6 (युग्मम्)

भवता समनुज्ञातः प्रविश्य नगरं शुभम्4.26.5।। संविधास्यति कार्याणि सर्वाणि ससुहृज्जनः। स्नातोऽयं विविधैर्गन्धैरौषधैश्च यथाविधि4.26.6।।

bhavatā samanujñātḥ praviśya nagarṃ śubham4.26.5|| sṃvidhāsyati kāryāṇi sarvāṇi sasuhṛjjanḥ| snāto'yṃ vividhairgandhairauṣadhaiśca yathāvidhi4.26.6||

Translation

अयम् he, ससुहृज्जनः along with friends, भवता by you, समनुज्ञातः permitted, शुभम् auspicious, नगरम् city, प्रविश्य on entering, विविधैः with different kinds of, गन्धैः with fragrants, औषधैश्च with medicinal herbs, यथाविधि as per tradition, स्नातः bathed, सर्वाणि all, कार्याणि works, संविधास्यति will do.

Meaning

'Permitted by your gracious self, he will enter the auspicious city along with his friends and perform his duties. He had his auspicious bath in fragrant waters with medicinal herbs as per tradition.

KK-26-7Kishkindha Kanda 26.7

अर्चयिष्यति रत्नैश्च माल्यैश्च त्वां विशेषतः। इमां गिरिगुहां रम्यामभिगन्तुमितोऽर्हसि4.26.7।। कुरुष्व स्वामिसम्बन्धं वानरान्सम्प्रहर्षय।

arcayiṣyati ratnaiśca mālyaiśca tvāṃ viśeṣatḥ| imāṃ giriguhāṃ ramyāmabhigantumito'rhasi4.26.7|| kuruṣva svāmisambandhṃ vānarānsampraharṣaya|

Translation

माल्यैश्च with garlands, रत्नैश्च and with gems, विशेषतः specially, त्वाम् you, अर्चयिष्यति he will propitiate you, त्वम् you, रम्याम् delightful, इमाम् this, गिरिगुहाम् mountain, अभिगन्तुम् to reach, अर्हसि proper for you, वानरान् to monkeys, स्वामिसम्बन्धम् relationship with the king, कुरुष्व establish, सम्प्रहर्षय please.

Meaning

'He wants to propitiate you first specially with garlands and gems. Pray enter this beautiful mountain cave for the pleasure of the monkeys and establish relationship with king Sugriva.'

KK-26-8Kishkindha Kanda 26.8

एवमुक्तो हनुमता राघवः परवीरहा4.26.8।। प्रत्युवाच हनूमन्तं बुद्धिमान्वाक्यकोविदः।

evamukto hanumatā rāghavḥ paravīrahā4.26.8|| pratyuvāca hanūmantṃ buddhimānvākyakovidḥ|

Translation

हनुमता by Hanuman, एवम् in that way, उक्तः said, परवीरहा slayer of enemies, वाक्यकोविदः skilful in talk, बुद्धिमान् wise, राघवः Rama, हनूमन्तम् to Hanuman, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Meaning

Requested by Hanuman who was skilful in conversation, wise Rama, slayer of enemies, replied:

KK-26-9Kishkindha Kanda 26.9

चतुर्दश समास्सौम्य ग्रामं वा यदि वा पुरम्4.26.9।। न प्रवेक्ष्यामि हनुमन्पितुर्निर्देशपालकः।

caturdaśa samāssaumya grāmṃ vā yadi vā puram4.26.9|| na pravekṣyāmi hanumanpiturnirdeśapālakḥ|

Translation

सौम्य dear, हनुमन् Hanuman, पितुः father's, निर्देशपालकः obedient to father's command, चतुर्दश fourteen, समाः years, ग्रामं वा a village or, यदि वा or if, पुरम् a city, न प्रवेक्ष्यामि I will not enter.

Meaning

'Dear Hanuman In obedience to my father's command I should not enter any village or city for fourteen years.

KK-26-10Kishkindha Kanda 26.10

सुसमृद्धां गुहां रम्यां सुग्रीवो वानरर्षभः4.26.10।। प्रविष्टो विधिवद्वीरः क्षिप्रं राज्येऽभिषिच्यताम्।

susamṛddhāṃ guhāṃ ramyāṃ sugrīvo vānararṣabhḥ4.26.10|| praviṣṭo vidhivadvīrḥ kṣiprṃ rājye'bhiṣicyatām|

Translation

सुसमृद्धाम् highly prosperous, रम्यां beautiful, गुहाम् cavern, प्रविष्टः he will enter, वीरः a brave man, वानरर्षभः a bull among monkeys, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, क्षिप्रम् at once, विधिवत् with due rituals, राज्ये kingdom, अभिषिच्यताम् be installed.

Meaning

'Let Sugriva enter the beautiful prosperous cavern (Kishkinda) and be installed by you as king with due rituals.'

KK-26-11Kishkindha Kanda 26.11

एवमुक्त्वा हनूमन्तं रामस्सुग्रीवमब्रवीत्4.26.11।। वृत्तज्ञो वृत्तसम्पन्नमुदारबलविक्रमम्।

evamuktvā hanūmantṃ rāmassugrīvamabravīt4.26.11|| vṛttajño vṛttasampannamudārabalavikramam|

Translation

वृत्तज्ञः knower of etiquette, रामः Rama, हनूमन्तम् to Hanuman, एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having said, वृत्तसम्पन्नम् endowed with wisdom, उदारबलविक्रमम् mighty strong, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Having thus spoken to Hanuman, Rama who knew etiquette addressed mighty Sugriva, endowed with wisdom:

KK-26-12-13Kishkindha Kanda 26.12–13 (युग्मम्)

इममप्यङ्गदं वीर यौवराज्येऽभिषेचय4.26.12।। ज्येष्ठस्य स सुतो ज्येष्ठस्सदृशो विक्रमेण ते। अङ्गदोऽयमदीनात्मा यौवराज्यस्य भाजनम्4.26.13।।

imamapyaṅgadṃ vīra yauvarājye'bhiṣecaya4.26.12|| jyeṣṭhasya sa suto jyeṣṭhassadṛśo vikrameṇa te| aṅgado'yamadīnātmā yauvarājyasya bhājanam4.26.13||

Translation

वीर O hero, इमम् this, अङ्गदमपि Angada also, यौवराज्ये as heirapparent, अभिषेचय consecrate, ज्येष्ठस्य elder brother's, ज्येष्ठः सुतः eldest son, विक्रमेण in prowess, ते सदृशः like you, अदीनात्मा a noble person, अयम् अङ्गदः this Angada, यौवराज्यस्य of the heir apparent, भाजनम् fit.

Meaning

'O hero consecrate Angada as heirapparent since he deserves it as the eldest son of your brother, a noble soul and equal to you in prowess.

KK-26-14Kishkindha Kanda 26.14

पूर्वोऽयं वार्षिको मासः श्रावणस्सलिलागमः। प्रवृत्तास्सौम्य चत्वारो मासा वार्षिकसज्ञिकाः4.26.14।।

pūrvo'yṃ vārṣiko māsḥ śrāvaṇassalilāgamḥ| pravṛttāssaumya catvāro māsā vārṣikasajñikāḥ4.26.14||

Translation

सौम्य O noble lord, वार्षिकसज्ञिकाः known as rainy days, चत्वारः मासाः four months, प्रवृत्ताः commenced, अयम् this, सलिलागमः rain has started pouring down, वार्षिकः in the rainy season, पूर्वः first one, श्रावण मासः month of Sraavana.

Meaning

'O noble Sugriva the four months from now will be rainy season. This is Sravana, the first month of the season in which rain is expected to start pouring.

KK-26-15Kishkindha Kanda 26.15

नायमुद्योगसमयः प्रविश त्वं पुरीं शुभाम्। अस्मिन्वत्स्याम्यहं सौम्य पर्वते सह लक्ष्मणः4.26.15।।

nāyamudyogasamayḥ praviśa tvṃ purīṃ śubhām| asminvatsyāmyahṃ saumya parvate saha lakṣmaṇḥ4.26.15||

Translation

सौम्य O goodnatured Sugriva, अयम् this, उद्योगसमयः time for enterprise, न not, त्वम् you, शुभाम् auspicious, पुरीम् capital of Kishkinda, प्रविश you may enter, अहम् I, सहलक्ष्मणः along with Lakshmana, अस्मिन् पर्वते on this mountain, वत्स्यामि will reside.

Meaning

'O goodnatured Sugriva this is not a suitable time for any endeavour. Go to the auspicious capital city of Kishkinda and I will reside on the mountain with Lakshmana.

KK-26-16Kishkindha Kanda 26.16

इयं गिरिगुहा रम्या विशाला युक्तमारुता। प्रभूतसलिला सौम्य प्रभूतकमलोत्पला4.26.16।।

iyṃ giriguhā ramyā viśālā yuktamārutā| prabhūtasalilā saumya prabhūtakamalotpalā4.26.16||

Translation

सौम्य dear Sugriva, इयम् this, गिरिगुहा cavern of the mountain, रम्या delightful, विशाला large, युक्तमारुता with adequate breeze, प्रभूतसलिला with abundant water nearby, प्रभूतकमलोत्पला with lotuses and lilies.

Meaning

'Dear Sugriva this cavern of the mountain is large and airy. It has abundant water resources with lotuses and lilies.

KK-26-17Kishkindha Kanda 26.17

कार्तिके समनुप्राप्ते त्वं रावणवधे यत। एष नस्समयस्सौम्य प्रविश त्वं स्वमालयम्4.26.17।। अभिषिक्तस्व राज्ये च सुहृदस्सम्प्रहर्षय।

kārtike samanuprāpte tvṃ rāvaṇavadhe yata| eṣa nassamayassaumya praviśa tvṃ svamālayam4.26.17|| abhiṣiktasva rājye ca suhṛdassampraharṣaya|

Translation

कार्तिके when Kartika, समनुप्राप्ते sets in, त्वम् you, रावणवधे for the slaying of Ravana, यत you try, सौम्य O good Sugriva, एषः this, नः for us, समयः proper time, त्वम् you, स्वम् your, आलयम् city, प्रविश enter, राज्ये in the kingdom, अभिषिक्तस्व on installing yourself, सुहृदः to your friends, सम्प्रहर्षय cheer them .

Meaning

'Enter the city and get yourself installed and cheer your friends. Make all arrangement for killing Ravana when the month of Kartika begins as it is the proper time (for the purpose).

KK-26-18Kishkindha Kanda 26.18

इति रामाभ्यनुज्ञातस्सुग्रीवो वानराधिपः4.26.18।। प्रविवेश पुरीं रम्यां किष्किन्धां वालिपालिताम्।

iti rāmābhyanujñātassugrīvo vānarādhipḥ4.26.18|| praviveśa purīṃ ramyāṃ kiṣkindhāṃ vālipālitām|

Translation

इति thus, रामाभ्यनुज्ञातः permitted by Rama, वानराधिपः lord of monkeys, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, वालिपालिताम् ruled by Vali, रम्याम् beautiful, किष्किन्धां पुरीम् Kishkinda city, प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

Thus permitted by Rama , Sugriva, lord of the monkeys entered the beautiful city of Kishkinda (once) ruled by Vali.

KK-26-19Kishkindha Kanda 26.19

तं वानरसहस्राणि प्रविष्टं वानरेश्वरम्4.26.19।। अभिवाद्य प्रविष्टानि सर्वतः पर्यवारयन्।

tṃ vānarasahasrāṇi praviṣṭṃ vānareśvaram4.26.19|| abhivādya praviṣṭāni sarvatḥ paryavārayan|

Translation

वानरेश्वरम् lord of monkeys, प्रविष्टम् entered, तम् him, अभिवाद्य welcomed, वानरसहस्राणि thousands of monkeys, प्रविष्टानि entered, सर्वतः all, पर्यवारयन् standing in attendance.

Meaning

Thousands of monkeys entered the city of Kishkinda along with their king, and stood in attendance everywhere.

KK-26-20Kishkindha Kanda 26.20

ततः प्रकृतयस्सर्वा दृष्ट्वा हरिगणेश्वरम्4.26.20।। प्रणम्य मूर्ध्ना पतिता वसुधायां समाहिताः।

tatḥ prakṛtayassarvā dṛṣṭvā harigaṇeśvaram4.26.20|| praṇamya mūrdhnā patitā vasudhāyāṃ samāhitāḥ|

Translation

ततः then, सर्वाः all, प्रकृतयः people of the city, हरिगणेश्वरम् to the chief of monkey clan, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, मूर्ध्ना with the forehead touching the ground, प्रणम्य having prostrated, समाहिताः all collected together, वसुधायाम् on the floor, पतिताः fell.

Meaning

Then all the subjects of the city collected together, prostrated to the chief of the monkey clan with their forehead touching the ground (as a mark of respect) and sat down.

KK-26-21Kishkindha Kanda 26.21

सुग्रीवः प्रकृतीस्सर्वास्सम्भाष्योत्थाप्य वीर्यवान्4.26.21।। भ्रातुरन्तःपुरं सौम्यं प्रविवेश महाबलः।

sugrīvḥ prakṛtīssarvāssambhāṣyotthāpya vīryavān4.26.21|| bhrāturantḥpurṃ saumyṃ praviveśa mahābalḥ|

Translation

वीर्यवान् mighty, महाबलः powerful, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, सर्वाः all, प्रकृतीः subjects, उत्थाप्य having lifted them up, सम्भाष्य addressed, भ्रातुः brother's, सौम्यम् gentle, अन्तःपुरम् inner chambers, प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

Asking the monkeys to rise to their feet, the mighty and powerful Sugriva entered the inner chambers of his brother.

KK-26-22Kishkindha Kanda 26.22

प्रविश्य त्वभिनिष्क्रान्तं सुग्रीवं प्लवगेश्वरम्4.26.22।। अभ्यषिञ्चन्त सुहृदस्सहस्राक्षमिवामराः।

praviśya tvabhiniṣkrāntṃ sugrīvṃ plavageśvaram4.26.22|| abhyaṣiñcanta suhṛdassahasrākṣamivāmarāḥ|

Translation

प्रविश्य having entered, त्वभिनिष्क्रान्तं and returned, प्लवगेश्वरम् lord of monkeys, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, सुहृदः friends and relations, अमराः gods, सहस्राक्षम् Indra, इव like, अभ्यषिञ्चन्त performed consecration.

Meaning

With Sugriva,the lord of the monkeys, returned to Kishkinda, his kith and kin coronated him just as the gods consecrated the thousandeyed Indra.

KK-26-23-28Kishkindha Kanda 26.23–28 (कुलकम्)

तस्य पाण्डुरमाजह्रुश्छत्रं हेमपरिष्कृतम्4.26.23।। शुक्ले च वालव्यजने हेमदण्डे यशस्करे। तथा सर्वाणि रत्नानि सर्वबीजौषधीरपि4.26.24 सक्षीराणां च वृक्षाणां प्ररोहान्कुसुमानि च। शुक्लानि चैव वस्त्राणि श्वेतं चैवानुलेपनम्4.26.25।। सुगन्धीनि च माल्यानि स्थलजान्यम्बुजानि च। चन्दनानि च दिव्यानि गन्धांश्च विविधान्बहून्4.26.26।। अक्षतं जातरूपं च प्रियङ्गुमधुसर्पिषी। दधि चर्म च वैयाघ्रं वाराही चाप्युपानहौ4.26.27।। समालम्भनमादाय रोचनां समनश्शिलाम्। आग्मुस्तत्र मुदिता वराः कन्यास्तु षोडश4.26.28।।

tasya pāṇḍuramājahruśchatrṃ hemapariṣkṛtam4.26.23|| śukle ca vālavyajane hemadaṇḍe yaśaskare| tathā sarvāṇi ratnāni sarvabījauṣadhīrapi4.26.24 sakṣīrāṇāṃ ca vṛkṣāṇāṃ prarohānkusumāni ca| śuklāni caiva vastrāṇi śvetṃ caivānulepanam4.26.25|| sugandhīni ca mālyāni sthalajānyambujāni ca| candanāni ca divyāni gandhāṃśca vividhānbahūn4.26.26|| akṣatṃ jātarūpṃ ca priyaṅgumadhusarpiṣī| dadhi carma ca vaiyāghrṃ vārāhī cāpyupānahau4.26.27|| samālambhanamādāya rocanāṃ samanaśśilām| āgmustatra muditā varāḥ kanyāstu ṣoḍaśa4.26.28||

Translation

पाण्डुरम् pale white, हेमपरिष्कृतम् decorated with gold, छत्रम् canopy, हेमदण्डे a pair of golden staff, यशस्करे that which confers glory, शुक्ले white, वालव्यजने च fans made of the tail of Chamari deer, तस्य of him, आजह्रुः brought, तथा so also, षोडश sixteen, मुदिताः happy, वराः fine, कन्याश्च young girls, सर्वाणि all kinds, रत्नानि gems, सर्वबीजौषधीरपि all kinds of herbs grown from medicinal seeds, सक्षीराणाम् with sap, वृक्षाणाम् of trees, प्ररोहान् tender leaves and shoots, कुसुमानि च and flowers, शुक्लानि white, वस्त्राणि clothes, चैव also, श्वेतम् white, अनुलेपनं चैव and unguent , सुगन्धीनि scented, माल्यानि garlands, स्थलजानि that grows on land, अम्बुजानि च even lotuses, दिव्यानि heavenly, चन्दनानि च and sandalpaste, विविधान् of different kinds, बहून् many, गन्धांश्च fragrants, अक्षतम् solid, जातरूपं च gold, प्रियङ्गुमधुसर्पिषी honey of priyangu, दधि curds, वैघ्रम् tiger's, चर्म च skin also, वाराही boar, उपानहौ sandals, समालम्बनम् collection, रोचनां a kind of yellow pigment known as gorochana, मनश्शिलाम् along with highly valued unguents made of red arsenic, आदाय brought, तत्र there, आजग्मुः and came.

Meaning

The monkeys brought a white canopy decorated with gold and two chamaras with glorious golden staff. They also brought jewels, all kinds of medicinal herbs, sprouts, sap from trees, white flowers and white clothes, unguents, garlands of fragrant lotuses that grow on land and water, heavently sandal, fragrants of different kinds, goldcoloured paddy, honey of priyanga, curds, tiger skin and sandals made of boar skin. Then sixteen beautiful, cheerful females appeared with unguent, gorochana mixed with red arsenic (used for putting tilaka on the forehead).

KK-26-29Kishkindha Kanda 26.29

ततस्ते वानरश्रेष्ठं यथाकालं यथाविधि। रत्नैर्वस्त्रैश्च भक्ष्यैश्च तोषयित्वा द्विजर्षभान्4.26.29।।

tataste vānaraśreṣṭhṃ yathākālṃ yathāvidhi| ratnairvastraiśca bhakṣyaiśca toṣayitvā dvijarṣabhān4.26.29||

Translation

ततः then, रत्नैः with gems, वस्त्रैश्च and with clothes, भक्ष्यैः with eatables, द्विजर्षभान् brahmins, तोषयित्वा after satisfying them, ते they, यथाविधि duly, वानरश्रेष्ठम् best of monkeys.

Meaning

Then they duly propitiated the brahmins, offering them gifts of gems, clothes and eatables.

KK-26-30Kishkindha Kanda 26.30

ततः कुशपरिस्तीर्णं समिद्धं जातवेदसम्। मन्त्रपूतेन हविषा हुत्वा मन्त्रविदो जनाः4.26.30।।

tatḥ kuśaparistīrṇṃ samiddhṃ jātavedasam| mantrapūtena haviṣā hutvā mantravido janāḥ4.26.30||

Translation

ततः then, मन्त्रविदः who recite vedic hymns, जनाः people, कुशपरिस्तीर्णम् strewn with kusa grass, समिद्धम् kindled, जातवेदसम् fire, मन्त्रपूतेन by sanctifying with mantras, हविषा with havis, हुत्वा having offered,

Meaning

Then the priests (people who recite Vedic hymns) strew around kusa grass, kindled sacred fire with recitation of mantras and made offerings of havis into the fire.

ततो हेमप्रतिष्ठाने वरास्तरणसंवृते। प्रासादशिखरे रम्ये चित्रमाल्योपशोभिते4.26.31।। प्राङ्मुखं विविधैर्मन्त्रै: स्थापयित्वा वरासने। नदीनदेभ्यस्संहृत्य तीर्थेभ्यश्च समन्ततः4.26.32।। आहृत्य च समुद्रेभ्यस्सर्वेभ्यो वानरर्षभाः। अपः कनककुम्भेषु निधाय विमलाश्शुभाः4.26.33।। शुभैर्वृषभशृङ्गैश्च कलशैश्चापि काञ्चनैः। शास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना महर्षिविहितेन च4.26.34।। गजो गवाक्षो गवयश्शरभो गन्धमादनः। मैन्दश्च द्विविदश्चैव हनुमान्जाम्बवान्नलः4.26.35।। अभ्यषिञ्चन्त सुग्रीवं प्रसन्नेन सुगन्धिना। सलिलेन सहस्राक्षं वसवो वासवं यथा4.26.36।।

Translation

ततः then, हेमप्रतिष्ठाने on a golden throne, वरास्तरणसंवृते with fine covering, चित्रमाल्योपशोभिते adorned with beautiful garlands, रम्ये delightful, प्रासादशिखरे on the top of a mansion, वरासने on a fine seat, मन्स्रैः with mantras, विविधैः with various, विधिवत् as per ritual, प्राङ्मुखम् him who was facing east, स्थापयित्वा having made to sit, नदीनदेभ्यः from rivers and rivulets, समन्ततः all together, तीर्थेभ्यश्च from waters, अपः संहृत्य having collected, सर्वेभ्यः from all, समुद्रेभ्यः च and from oceans, विमलम् pure, शुभा auspicious, कनककुम्भेषु in golden pots, निधाय having stored, वानरर्षभाः bulls among monkeys, गजः Gaja, गवाक्षः Gavaksha, गवयः Gavaya, शरभा Sarabha, गन्धमादन Gandhamadana, द्विविदश्चैव and Dvivida, मैन्दश्च Mainda and, हनूमान् Hanuman, नल Nala, तथा so also, जाम्बवान् Jambavan, प्रसन्नेन with pure, सुगन्धिना fragrant, सलिलेन water, शास्त्रदृष्टेन according to sastras, महर्षि विहितेन च aportioned according to the procedure ordained by sages, विधिना as per tradition, शुभैः with auspicious, वृषभशृङ्गैश्च through horns of bulls, काञ्चनैः with golden, कलशैश्चैव pots, वसवः Vasus, सहस्राक्षम् Indra, वासवं यथा like the Indra, अभ्यषिञ्चन्त performed the consecration.

Meaning

Then Sugriva was seated facing the east on a golden throne with fine coverings on top of the mansion decorated with multicoloured garlands. As per tradition, sacred waters collected from rivers and rivulets and stored in golden pots was aportioned in accordance with the procedure ordained by the sages in sastras. At the appropriate time the pure and fragrant water was poured by Gaja, Gavaya, Sarabha, Mainda, Dvivida, Hanumanta, Jambavan and Nala on Sugriva, the bull among monkeys through horns of bulls and jars of gold, like the eight Vasus bathed the thousandeyed Indra. Thus they performed the consecration.

KK-26-37Kishkindha Kanda 26.37

अभिषिक्ते तु सुग्रीवे सर्वे वानरपुङ्गवाः। प्रचुक्रुशुर्महात्मानो हृष्टा स्तत्र सहस्रशः 4.26.37।।

abhiṣikte tu sugrīve sarve vānarapuṅgavāḥ| pracukruśurmahātmāno hṛṣṭā statra sahasraśḥ 4.26.37||

Translation

सुग्रीवे as Sugriva, अभिषिक्ते was consecrated, सहस्रशः in thousands, सर्वे all, तत्र there, महात्मानः great, वानरपुङ्गवाः leaders among monkeys, हृष्टाः rejoiced, प्रचुक्रुशुः shrieked out of joy.

Meaning

As Sugriva was ceremoniously consecrated, thousands of monkeys rejoiced and shrieked out of joy.

KK-26-38Kishkindha Kanda 26.38

रामस्य तु वचः कुर्वन्सुग्रीवो हरिपुङ्गवः। अङ्गदं सम्परिष्वज्य यौवराज्येऽभ्यषेचयत्4.26.38।।

rāmasya tu vacḥ kurvansugrīvo haripuṅgavḥ| aṅgadṃ sampariṣvajya yauvarājye'bhyaṣecayat4.26.38||

Translation

हरिपुङ्गवः lord of monkeys, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, रामस्य Rama's, वचः words, कुर्वन् obeying, अङ्गदम् Angada, सम्परिष्वज्य embraced, यौवराज्ये prince regent, अभ्यषेचयत् consecrated.

Meaning

In obedience to Rama's instruction, Sugriva, lord of the monkeys installed Angada as prince regent and embraced him.

KK-26-39Kishkindha Kanda 26.39

अङ्गदे चाभिषिक्ते तु सानुक्रोशाः प्लवङ्गमाः। साधु साध्विति सुग्रीवं महात्मानोऽभ्यपूजयन्4.26.39।।

aṅgade cābhiṣikte tu sānukrośāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ| sādhu sādhviti sugrīvṃ mahātmāno'bhyapūjayan4.26.39||

Translation

अङ्गदे च when Angada also, अभिषिक्ते तु on his consecration, सानुक्रोशाः those who were concerned, महात्मानः great souls, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, साधु साधु well done, well done, इति thus, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, अभ्यपूजयन् greeted with reverence.

Meaning

The great monkeys concerned hailed Sugriva's action saying, 'well done, well done' on the installation of Angada.

KK-26-40Kishkindha Kanda 26.40

रामं चैव महात्मानं लक्ष्मणं च पुनः पुनः। प्रीताश्च तुष्टुवुस्सर्वे तादृशे तत्र वर्तिते4.26.40।।

rāmṃ caiva mahātmānṃ lakṣmaṇṃ ca punḥ punḥ| prītāśca tuṣṭuvussarve tādṛśe tatra vartite4.26.40||

Translation

तत्र there, तादृशे on such an occasion, वर्तिते when it happened, सर्वे all, प्रीताश्च pleased, महात्मानम् great soul, रामं चैव Rama also, लक्ष्मणं च and Lakshmana, पुनः पुनः again and again, तुष्टुवुः praised.

Meaning

As Sugriva and Angada were installed, all the monkeys were highly pleased and praised the noblehearted Rama and Lakshmana again and again.

KK-26-41Kishkindha Kanda 26.41

हृष्टपुष्टजनाकीर्णा पताकाध्वजशोभिता। बभूव नगरी रम्या किष्किन्धा गिरिगह्वरे4.26.41।।

hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇā patākādhvajaśobhitā| babhūva nagarī ramyā kiṣkindhā girigahvare4.26.41||

Translation

गिरिगह्वरे in the mountain cavern, पताकाध्वजशोभिता decorated with banners and flags, रम्या beautiful, किष्किन्धानगरी city of Kishkinda, हृष्टपुष्टजनाकीर्णा filled with happy welfare citizens, बभूव it looked.

Meaning

The beautiful city of Kishkinda situated in a mountaincave, decorated with banners and flags was filled with happy, wellfed citizens.
