KK-25-1Kishkindha Kanda 25.1

सुग्रीवं चैव तारां च साङ्गदं सहलक्ष्मणः। समानशोकः काकुत्स्थ स्सान्त्वयन्निदमब्रवीत्।।4.25.1।।

sugrīvṃ caiva tārāṃ ca sāṅgadṃ sahalakṣmaṇḥ| samānaśokḥ kākutstha ssāntvayannidamabravīt||4.25.1||

Translation

सहलक्ष्मणः accompanied by Lakshmana, समानशोकः equally sad, चैव also, काकुत्स्थ Kakutstha (Rama), सुग्रीवं Sugriva, साङ्गदम् along with Angada, तारां च and Tara, सान्त्वयन् pacifying, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Rama and Lakshmana were equally sad. Rama, scion of the Kakutstha race, consoled Sugriva, Tara as well as Angada in the following words:

KK-25-2Kishkindha Kanda 25.2

न शोकपरितापेन श्रेयसा युज्यते मृतः। यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं तत्समाधातुमर्हथ4.25.2।।

na śokaparitāpena śreyasā yujyate mṛtḥ| yadatrānantarṃ kāryṃ tatsamādhātumarhatha4.25.2||

Translation

शोकपरितापेन by lamenting, मृतः the dead, श्रेयसा with wellbeing, न युज्यते will not gain, अत्र here, यत् whatever, अनन्तरम् later, कार्यम् should be done, तत् that, समाधातुम् to take up, अर्हथ you may do.

Meaning

'No lamentation revives the dead. So you should take up whatever is required now.

KK-25-3Kishkindha Kanda 25.3

लोकवृत्तमनुष्ठेयं कृतं वो बाष्पमोक्षणम्। न कालादुत्तरं किञ्चित्कर्म शक्यमुपासितुम्4.25.3।।

lokavṛttamanuṣṭheyṃ kṛtṃ vo bāṣpamokṣaṇam| na kālāduttarṃ kiñcitkarma śakyamupāsitum4.25.3||

Translation

लोकवृत्तम् worldly way, अनुष्ठेयम् should be performed, वः by you, बाष्पमोक्षणम् shedding tears, कृतम् is done, कालात् after lapse of time, उत्तरम् later, परम् supreme, किञ्चित् कर्म even a little task, उपासितुम् to be engaged in, न शक्यम् not possible.

Meaning

'You have to go the worldly way. You have shed tears enough. Time is passing. You cannot perform the funeral after the lapse of appropriate time.

KK-25-4Kishkindha Kanda 25.4

नियतिः कारणं लोके नियतिः कर्मसाधनम्। नियतिस्सर्वभूतानां नियोगेष्विह कारणम्4.25.4।।

niyatiḥ kāraṇṃ loke niyatiḥ karmasādhanam| niyatissarvabhūtānāṃ niyogeṣviha kāraṇam4.25.4||

Translation

लोके the worlds, नियतिः fate, कारणम् cause, नियतिः fate, कर्मसाधनम् to accomplish tasks, इह here, सर्वभूतानाम् for all beings, नियोगेषु to assign respective duties, नियतिः fate, कारणम् is the cause.

Meaning

'Fate is the cause of the world. Fate is the means of accomplishment. Fate assigns duties to all beings.

KK-25-5Kishkindha Kanda 25.5

न कर्ता कस्यचित्कश्चिन्नियोगे चापिनेश्वरः। स्वभावे वर्तते लोकस्तस्य कालः परायणम्4.25.5।।

na kartā kasyacitkaścinniyoge cāpineśvarḥ| svabhāve vartate lokastasya kālḥ parāyaṇam4.25.5||

Translation

कस्यचित् for any one, नियोगे in controlling, कश्चित् any one, कर्ता agent of action, न not even, ईश्वरः अपि च Iswara also, न not, लोकः world, स्वभावे by nature, वर्तते follows, तस्य for that, कालः only time, परायणम् ultimate cause.

Meaning

'No one can control another's action. No one including God can be the agent of action. No one has the power to entrust duty to others. This entire world is governed by one's own nature. Nature in turn is governed by Time (fate).

KK-25-6Kishkindha Kanda 25.6

न कालः कालमत्येति न कालः परिहीयते। स्वभावं च समासाद्य न कश्चिदतिवर्तते4.25.6।।

na kālḥ kālamatyeti na kālḥ parihīyate| svabhāvṃ ca samāsādya na kaścidativartate4.25.6||

Translation

कालः Iswara, कालम् time, न अत्येति not deviate, कालः fate, न परिहीयते is not subjected any concession, कश्चित् anybody, स्वभावम् one's own nature, समासाद्य after exercising, न अतिवर्तते cannot transgress.

Meaning

'God (though independent) does not deviate from Time. Time cannot be escaped or trangressed. It cannot be condoned or avoided. No one can transgress their own nature.

KK-25-7Kishkindha Kanda 25.7

न कालस्यास्ति बन्धुत्वं न हेतुर्न पराक्रमः। न मित्रज्ञातिसम्बन्धः कारणं नात्मनो वशः4.25.7।।

na kālasyāsti bandhutvṃ na heturna parākramḥ| na mitrajñātisambandhḥ kāraṇṃ nātmano vaśḥ4.25.7||

Translation

कालस्य Time, बन्धुत्वम् relationship, नास्ति is not there, आत्मनो वशः self itself, हेतुः reason, न no, पराक्रमः valour, न not, मित्रज्ञातिसम्बन्धः relationship based on friendship, कारणम् cause, न no.

Meaning

'Time has no consideration for relationship, friendship, or kinship or valour. Time itself is the cause. It is never under one's control.

KK-25-8Kishkindha Kanda 25.8

किं तु कालपरीणामो द्रष्टव्यस्साधु पश्यता। धर्मश्चार्थश्च कामश्च कालक्रमसमाहिताः4.25.8।।

kiṃ tu kālaparīṇāmo draṣṭavyassādhu paśyatā| dharmaścārthaśca kāmaśca kālakramasamāhitāḥ4.25.8||

Translation

किं तु however, साधु properly, पश्यता by a person who can see, कालपरीणामः effect of fate, द्रष्टव्यः should be visualised, धर्मश्च and dharma, अर्थश्च even wealth, कामश्च and pleasures, कालक्रमसमाहिताः are ordained by an order which is controlled by fate.

Meaning

'However a wise man should visualise the turn of events in course of time with the right vision. Dharma, artha and kama are controlled by an order laid down by Time.

KK-25-9Kishkindha Kanda 25.9

इतस्स्वां प्रकृतिं वाली गतःप्राप्तः क्रियाफलम्। धर्मार्थकाम संयोगैः पवित्रं प्लवगेश्वरः4.25.9।।

itassvāṃ prakṛtiṃ vālī gatḥprāptḥ kriyāphalam| dharmārthakāma sṃyogaiḥ pavitrṃ plavageśvarḥ4.25.9||

Translation

प्लवगेश्वरः king of monkeys, वाली vali, इतः dead, स्वाम् his own, प्रकृतिम् nature, गतः has reached, धर्मार्थकामसंयोगैः with the combination of dharma, wealth and pleasures, पवित्रम् sacred, क्रियाफलम् result of his action, प्राप्तः attained.

Meaning

'Vali, king of monkeys is dead and gone. He acted according to his own nature and attained the sacred fruit of his action comensurate with dharma, wealth and pleasures in this world.

KK-25-10Kishkindha Kanda 25.10

स्वधर्मस्य च संयोगाज्जितस्तेन महात्मना। स्वर्गः परिगृहीतश्च प्राणानपरिरक्षता4.25.10।।

svadharmasya ca sṃyogājjitastena mahātmanā| svargḥ parigṛhītaśca prāṇānaparirakṣatā4.25.10||

Translation

प्राणान् life, अपरिरक्षिता by not protecting, तेन महात्मना by that great soul, स्वधर्मस्य सम्योगात् by virtue of his own dharma, स्वर्गः heaven, जितः won, परिगृहीतश्च has been accepted.

Meaning

'Great Vali has earned a place in heaven by virtue of his own dharma and not caring for his own life .He has got the heavenly position he earned.

KK-25-11Kishkindha Kanda 25.11

एषा वै नियतिश्शेष्ठा यां गतो हरियूथपः। तदलं परितापेन प्राप्तकालमुपास्यताम्4.25.11।।

eṣā vai niyatiśśeṣṭhā yāṃ gato hariyūthapḥ| tadalṃ paritāpena prāptakālamupāsyatām4.25.11||

Translation

हरियूथपः chief of monkeys, याम् whichever, गतः has gone, एषा this, नियतिः destiny, श्रेष्ठा वै is the very best, तत् therefore, परितापेन to regret, अलम् no need of, प्राप्तकालम् at this time, उपास्यताम् attend.

Meaning

'The state attained by the chief of monkeys is an excellent one.Therefore there is no need to regret. Attend to your duties (relating to rites)'

KK-25-12Kishkindha Kanda 25.12

वचनान्ते तु रामस्य लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा। अवदत्प्रश्रितं वाक्यं सुग्रीवं गतचेतसम्4.25.12।।

vacanānte tu rāmasya lakṣmaṇḥ paravīrahā| avadatpraśritṃ vākyṃ sugrīvṃ gatacetasam4.25.12||

Translation

रामस्य Rama's, वचनान्ते at the end of his address, परवीरहा slayer of enemy warriors, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, गतचेतसम् he who had lost his senses, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, प्रश्रितम् humbly, वाक्यम् these words, अवदत् said.

Meaning

Seeing Sugriva had lost his senses, Lakshmana, the slayer of enemy warriors humbly said at the end of Rama's address:

KK-25-13Kishkindha Kanda 25.13

कुरु त्वमस्य सुग्रीव प्रेतकार्यमनन्तरम्। ताराङ्गदाभ्यां सहितो वालिनो दहनं प्रति।।4.25.13।।

kuru tvamasya sugrīva pretakāryamanantaram| tārāṅgadābhyāṃ sahito vālino dahanṃ prati||4.25.13||

Translation

सुग्रीव O Sugriva, त्वम् you, ताराङ्गदाभ्याम् with Tara and Angada, सहितः along with, अस्य his, अनन्तरम् later, प्रेतकार्यम् funeral rites, कुरु you may do, वालिनः for Vali, दहनं प्रति for the cremation.

Meaning

'O Sugriva perform with Tara and Angada the funeral obsequies relating to the cremation of Vali.

KK-25-14Kishkindha Kanda 25.14

समाज्ञापय काष्ठानि शुष्कानि च बहूनि च। चन्दनादीनि दिव्यानि वालिसंस्कारकारणात्4.25.14।।

samājñāpaya kāṣṭhāni śuṣkāni ca bahūni ca| candanādīni divyāni vālisṃskārakāraṇāt4.25.14||

Translation

शुष्कानि dried, बहूनि many, काष्ठानि logs of wood, दिव्यानि best one, चन्दनादीनि च sandalwood and such things, वालिसंस्कार कारणात् for the funeral rites of Vali, समाज्ञापय order.

Meaning

'Let the best of dry logs and sandalwood be ordered for the funeral rites of Vali.

KK-25-15Kishkindha Kanda 25.15

समाश्वासय चैनं त्वमङ्गदं दीनचेतसम्। मा भूर्बालिशबुद्धिस्त्वं त्वदधीनमिदं पुरम्4.25.15।।

samāśvāsaya cainṃ tvamaṅgadṃ dīnacetasam| mā bhūrbāliśabuddhistvṃ tvadadhīnamidṃ puram4.25.15||

Translation

त्वम् you, दीनचेतसम् despondent, एनम् him, अङ्गदम् Angada, समाश्वासय you may pacify, त्वम् you, बालिशबुद्धिः मा भूः you may not be childish, इदं पुरम् this city, त्वदधीनम् is under you.

Meaning

'Pacify the despondent Angada so that he does not entertain childish thoughts any more. This city is under your control (now).

KK-25-16Kishkindha Kanda 25.16

अङ्गदस्त्वानयेन्माल्यं वस्त्राणि विविधानि च। घृतं तैलमथो गन्धान्यच्चात्र समनन्तरम्4.25.16।।

aṅgadastvānayenmālyṃ vastrāṇi vividhāni ca| ghṛtṃ tailamatho gandhānyaccātra samanantaram4.25.16||

Translation

अङ्गदस्तु Angada for his part, माल्यम् garlands, विविधानि of many kinds, वस्त्राणि च clothes, घृतम् clarified butter, तैलम् oil, अथो now, गन्धानि fragrants, अत्र here, यत् whatever, समनन्तरम् is required to be collected, आनयेत् let him get.

Meaning

'Let Angada for his part collect garlands of many kinds, clothes, clarified butter, oil, fragrants and all that is required to be procured.

KK-25-17Kishkindha Kanda 25.17

त्वं तार शिबिकां शीघ्रमादायागच्छ सम्भ्रमात्। त्वरा गुणवती युक्ता ह्यस्मिन्काले विशेषतः4.25.17।।

tvṃ tāra śibikāṃ śīghramādāyāgaccha sambhramāt| tvarā guṇavatī yuktā hyasminkāle viśeṣatḥ4.25.17||

Translation

तार Tara (a monkey), त्वम् you, सम्भ्रमात् hasten, शीघ्रम् quickly, शिबिकाम् litter, आदाय after getting, आगच्छ may come, त्वरा swiftly, गुणवती tied with ropes, विशेषतः specially, अस्मिन्काले at this time, युक्ता हि will be proper.

Meaning

'O Tara quickly get a swiftmoving litter fastened with ropes specially suitable for this occasion.

KK-25-18Kishkindha Kanda 25.18

सज्जीभवन्तु प्लवगाश्शिबिकावाहनोचिताः। समर्था बलिनश्चैव निर्हरिष्यन्ति वालिनम्।।4.25.18।।

sajjībhavantu plavagāśśibikāvāhanocitāḥ| samarthā balinaścaiva nirhariṣyanti vālinam||4.25.18||

Translation

शिबिकावाहनोचिताः those monkeys who can carry the litter, समर्थाः capable ones, बलिनश्चैव and strong also, प्लवगाः monkeys, सज्जीभवन्तु let them get ready, वालिनम् Vali's, निर्हरिष्यन्ति they will carry him.

Meaning

'Let those who are strong and capable among the monkeys be ready to carry the dead body of Vali on a litter'.

KK-25-19Kishkindha Kanda 25.19

एवमुक्त्वा तु सुग्रीवं सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः। तसौ भ्रातृसमीपस्थो लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा4.25.19।।

evamuktvā tu sugrīvṃ sumitrānandavardhanḥ| tasau bhrātṛsamīpastho lakṣmaṇḥ paravīrahā4.25.19||

Translation

सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः the delight of Sumitra, परवीरहा slayer of enemies, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having said, भ्रातृसमीपस्थः near his brother, स्थौ stood.

Meaning

Having thus spoken to Sugriva, Lakshmana, son of Sumitra, slayer of enemies, stood by his brother

KK-25-20Kishkindha Kanda 25.20

लक्ष्मणस्य वचश्श्रुत्वा तारस्सम्भ्रान्तमानसः। प्रविवेश गुहां शीघ्रं शिबिकासक्तमानसः4.25.20।।

lakṣmaṇasya vacaśśrutvā tārassambhrāntamānasḥ| praviveśa guhāṃ śīghrṃ śibikāsaktamānasḥ4.25.20||

Translation

तारः Tara, लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, वचः words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, सम्भ्रान्तमानसः with exited mind, शिबिकासक्तमानसः entrusted to get a latter, शीघ्रम् quickly, गुहाम् cave, प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

On hearing Lakshmana, Tara in an excited state quickly entered the cave city to get the litter.

KK-25-21Kishkindha Kanda 25.21

आदाय शिबिकां तारस्स तु पर्यापतत्पुनः। वानरैरुह्यमानां तां शूरैरुद्वहनोचितैः4.25.21।।

ādāya śibikāṃ tārassa tu paryāpatatpunḥ| vānarairuhyamānāṃ tāṃ śūrairudvahanocitaiḥ4.25.21||

Translation

सः तारः that Tara, उद्वहनोचितैः by those who can carry, शूरैः by heroes, वानरैः by monkeys, उह्यमानाम् being carried, ताम् that, शिबिकाम् litter, आदाय after getting, पुनःagain, पर्यापतत् jumped in.

Meaning

Tara jumped in on to the litter carried by strong monkeys.

KK-25-22-25Kishkindha Kanda 25.22–25 (कलापकम्)

दिव्यां भद्रासनयुतां शिबिकां स्यन्दनोपमाम्। पक्षिकर्मभिराचित्रां द्रुमकर्मविभूषिताम्4.25.22।। आचितां चित्रपत्तीभि स्सुनिविष्टां समन्ततः। विमानमिव सिद्धानां जालवातायनान्विताम्4.25.23।। सुनियुक्तां विशालां च सुकृतां विश्वकर्मणा। दारुपर्वतकोपेतां चारुकर्मपरिष्कृताम्4.25.24।। वराभरणहारैश्च चित्रमाल्योपशोभिताम्। गुहागहनसञ्छन्नां रक्तचन्दनभूषिताम्4.25.25।। पुष्पौघैस्समभिच्छन्नां पद्ममालाभिरेव च। तरुणादित्यवर्णाभिर्भ्राजमानाभिरावृताम्4.25.26।।

divyāṃ bhadrāsanayutāṃ śibikāṃ syandanopamām| pakṣikarmabhirācitrāṃ drumakarmavibhūṣitām4.25.22|| ācitāṃ citrapattībhi ssuniviṣṭāṃ samantatḥ| vimānamiva siddhānāṃ jālavātāyanānvitām4.25.23|| suniyuktāṃ viśālāṃ ca sukṛtāṃ viśvakarmaṇā| dāruparvatakopetāṃ cārukarmapariṣkṛtām4.25.24|| varābharaṇahāraiśca citramālyopaśobhitām| guhāgahanasañchannāṃ raktacandanabhūṣitām4.25.25|| puṣpaughaissamabhicchannāṃ padmamālābhireva ca| taruṇādityavarṇābhirbhrājamānābhirāvṛtām4.25.26||

Translation

दिव्याम् marvellous, भद्रासनयुताम् with a splendid seat, स्यन्दनोपमाम् comparable to a chariot, पक्षिकर्मभिः with different forms of birds, आचित्राम् carved, द्रुमकर्मविभूषिताम् decorated with the designs of trees, चित्रपत्तीभिः with colourful pictures, आचिताम् covered with, समन्ततः on every side, सुनिविष्टाम् perfectly fixed, सिद्धानाम् of saints, विमानमिव like aerialchariot, जालवातायनायुताम् with grilled windows, सुनियुक्ताम् fitted, विशालां च also big, सुकृताम् wellcarved, विश्वकर्मणा by Visvakarma, दारुपर्वतकोपेताम् decorated with wooden mountains, चारुकर्मपरिष्कृताम् embelished beautifully, वराभरणहारैश्च decorated with choicest ornaments, चित्रमाल्योपशोभिताम् decorated with beautiful garlands, गुहागहनसञ्छन्नाम् with artificially created caverns and grottos, रक्तचन्दनभूषिताम् furbished with red sandal paste, पुष्पौघैः with heaps of flowers, तरुणादित्यवर्णाभिः resembling the colour of the rising Sun, भ्राजमानाभिः with radiant ones, पद्ममालाभिःwith lotus garlands, आवृताम् covered, शिबिकाम् palanquin

Meaning

A swiftmoving, marvellous palanquin designed by Viswakarma was brought. Covered with colourful pictures of birds and trees on every side it looking like an aerial chariot fit for saints. Fitted with a splendid seat grilled windows, artificially made small caverns and grottos of wood was embellished with carvings of mountains, choice ornaments and garlands. With red sandal paste, red scented flowers and red lotus garlands, it resembled the rising Sun.

KK-25-26Kishkindha Kanda 25.26

ईदृशीं शिबिकां दृष्ट्वा रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत्। क्षिप्रं विनीयतां वाली प्रेतकार्यं विधीयताम्4.25.26।।

īdṛśīṃ śibikāṃ dṛṣṭvā rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt| kṣiprṃ vinīyatāṃ vālī pretakāryṃ vidhīyatām4.25.26||

Translation

ईदृशीम् such, शिबिकाम् palanquin, दृष्ट्वा seeing, रामः Rama, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, अब्रवीत् said, वाली Vali, क्षिप्रम् quickly, विनीयताम् carried, प्रेतकार्यम् last rites, विधीयताम् be performed.

Meaning

Seeing the palanquin, Rama said to Lakshmana 'Let the body of Vali be placed in the palanquin quickly and last rites duly performed'.

KK-25-27Kishkindha Kanda 25.27

ततो वालिनमुद्यम्य सुग्रीवश्शिबिकां तदा। आरोपयत विक्रोशन्नङ्गदेन सहैव तु4.25.27।।

tato vālinamudyamya sugrīvaśśibikāṃ tadā| āropayata vikrośannaṅgadena sahaiva tu4.25.27||

Translation

ततः then, अङ्गदेन सहैव तु along with Angada , सुग्रीवःSugriva, विक्रोशन् while crying aloud, वालिनम् Vali, उद्यम्य after lifting, तदा then, शिबिकाम् palanquin, आरोपयत placed him on it

Meaning

Then Sugriva along with Angada, crying aloud bitterly, lifted the body (of Vali) and placed it on the palanquin.

KK-25-28Kishkindha Kanda 25.28

आरोप्य शिबिकां चैव वालिनं गतजीवितम्। अलङ्कारैश्च विविधैर्माल्यैर्वस्त्रैश्च भूषितम्4.25.28।।

āropya śibikāṃ caiva vālinṃ gatajīvitam| alaṅkāraiśca vividhairmālyairvastraiśca bhūṣitam4.25.28||

Translation

विविधैः with different, अलङ्कारैश्च with ornaments, माल्यैः with garlands, वस्त्रैश्च clothes, भूषितम् adorned, गतजीवितम् dead, वालिनम् Vali, शिबिकाम् palanquin, आरोप्य on placing.

Meaning

Vali's deadbody was placed on the palanquin, decorated with many ornaments, garlands and clothes

KK-25-29Kishkindha Kanda 25.29

आज्ञापयत्तदा राजा सुग्रीव प्लवगेश्वरः। और्ध्वदैहिकमार्यस्य क्रियतामनुरूपतः।।4.25.29।।

ājñāpayattadā rājā sugrīva plavageśvarḥ| aurdhvadaihikamāryasya kriyatāmanurūpatḥ||4.25.29||

Translation

तदा then, राजा the king, प्लवगेश्वरः king of monkeys, सुग्रीव Sugriva, आज्ञापयत् instructed, अनुरूपतः in a fitting manner, और्ध्वदैहिक funeral rites, आर्यस्य for the noble sire, क्रियतां may be conducted

Meaning

King Sugriva, lord of the monkeys, said, 'Let the funeral rites of my noble sire be performed in a fitting manner'.

KK-25-30Kishkindha Kanda 25.30

विश्राणयन्तो रत्नानि विविधानि बहून्यपि। अग्रतः प्लवगा यान्तु शिबिका समनन्तरम्4.25.30।।

viśrāṇayanto ratnāni vividhāni bahūnyapi| agratḥ plavagā yāntu śibikā samanantaram4.25.30||

Translation

प्लवगाः monkeys, विविधानि different, बहूनि many, रत्नानि gems, विश्राणयन्तः showering, अग्रतः in front, यान्तु let them go, शिबिका palanquin, समनन्तरम् be followed.

Meaning

'Let the monkeys march in front, showering many different gems in large quantities and let the palanquin follow.

KK-25-31Kishkindha Kanda 25.31

राज्ञामृद्दिविशेषा हि दृश्यन्ते भुवि यादृशाः। तादृशैरिह कुर्वन्तु वानरा भर्तृसत्क्रियाम्4.25.31।।

rājñāmṛddiviśeṣā hi dṛśyante bhuvi yādṛśāḥ| tādṛśairiha kurvantu vānarā bhartṛsatkriyām4.25.31||

Translation

भुवि earth, राज्ञाम् for kings, यादृशाः such, ऋद्धिविशेषाः special kinds of wealth, दृश्यन्ते seen, तादृशैः with such, वानराः monkeys, भर्तृसत्क्रियाम् the last rites to the revered leader, डह here, कुर्वन्तु may be done.

Meaning

'Let the monkeys perform the funeral rites of our lord in an honourable way as expensively as has been done with regard to the obsequies of kings who ruled over this land.

KK-25-32Kishkindha Kanda 25.32

तादृशं वालिनः क्षिप्रं प्राकुर्वन्नौर्ध्वदैहिकम्। अङ्गदं परिगृह्याऽशु तारप्रभृतयस्तदा4.25.32।। क्रोशन्तः प्रययुस्सर्वे वानरा हतबान्धवाः।

tādṛśṃ vālinḥ kṣiprṃ prākurvannaurdhvadaihikam| aṅgadṃ parigṛhyā'śu tāraprabhṛtayastadā4.25.32|| krośantḥ prayayussarve vānarā hatabāndhavāḥ|

Translation

वालिनः Vali, तादृशम् such, और्द्वदैहिकम् funeral rites, क्षिप्रम् quickly, प्राकुर्वन् did, तदा then, हतबान्धवाः (whose) relative (Vali) was dead, तारप्रभृतयः Tara and others, सर्वे all, वानराः monkeys, अङ्गदम् Angada, परिगृह्या taking with, क्रोशन्तः were crying aloud, आशु fast, प्रयमुः walked.

Meaning

Tara, Angada and the other bereaved monkeys hastened to perform the funeral ceremony of Valiweeping.

KK-25-33Kishkindha Kanda 25.33

ततः प्रणिहिताः सर्वा वानर्योस्य वशानुगाः4.25.33।। चुक्रुशु र्वीर वीरेति भूयः क्रोशन्ति ताः स्त्रीयः।

tatḥ praṇihitāḥ sarvā vānaryosya vaśānugāḥ4.25.33|| cukruśu rvīra vīreti bhūyḥ krośanti tāḥ strīyḥ|

Translation

ततः then, अस्य his, वशानुगाः those who were under his control, सर्वाः all, वानर्यः female monkeys, प्रणिहिताः stretched forth, वीर a great hero, इति saying so, चुक्रुशुः cried, ताः those, स्त्रियः women, भूयः again, क्रोशन्ति were bewailing.

Meaning

Then all the female monkeys who were in his (Vali's) harem walked past the deadbody of Vali, crying again and again 'Alas, Oh hero'

KK-25-34Kishkindha Kanda 25.34

ताराप्रभृतयस्सर्वा वानर्यो हरियूथपाः। अनुजग्मुर्हि भर्तारं क्रोशन्त्यः करुणस्वनाः4.25.34।।

tārāprabhṛtayassarvā vānaryo hariyūthapāḥ| anujagmurhi bhartārṃ krośantyḥ karuṇasvanāḥ4.25.34||

Translation

हरियूथपाः chief of the monkey troops, ताराप्रभृतयः Tara and others, सर्वाः all, वानर्यः female monkeys, करुणस्वनाः with pathetically, क्रोशन्त्यः crying, भर्तारम् husband, अनुजग्मुः went following, हि indeed.

Meaning

Tara along with other female monkeys followed their lord, crying pathetically.

KK-25-35Kishkindha Kanda 25.35

तासां रुदितशब्देन वानरीणां वनान्तरे। वनानि गिरयश्चैव विक्रोशन्तीव सर्वतः4.25.35।।

tāsāṃ ruditaśabdena vānarīṇāṃ vanāntare| vanāni girayaścaiva vikrośantīva sarvatḥ4.25.35||

Translation

वनान्तरे in the midst of the forest, तासाम् of them, वानरीणाम् of female monkeys, रुदितशब्देन by their cries, सर्वतः all over, वनानि forest, गिरयश्चैव and the mountains, विक्रोशन्तीव looked as if they were mourning.

Meaning

When the female monkeys were weeping in the midst of the forest, it looked as if the forest and the hills were also mourning.

KK-25-36Kishkindha Kanda 25.36

पुलिने गिरिनद्यास्तु विविक्ते जलसंवृते4.25.36।। चितां चक्रुस्सुबहवो वानराश्शोककर्शिता:।

puline girinadyāstu vivikte jalasṃvṛte4.25.36|| citāṃ cakrussubahavo vānarāśśokakarśitā:|

Translation

शोककर्शिताः agonzied, सुबहवः many, वानराः monkeys, गिरिनद्याः of a mountain stream, जलसंवृते surrounded by flow of water, विविक्ते in a solitary place, पुलिने on the sand bank, चिताम् a pyre, चक्रुः prepared.

Meaning

Tormented with tears, the monkeys prepared in a solitary place surrounded by waters a pyre on the sandbank of a mountain stream.

KK-25-37Kishkindha Kanda 25.37

अवरोप्य ततस्स्कन्धाच्छिबिकां वाहनोचिताः। तस्थुरेकान्तमाश्रित्य सर्वे शोकसमन्विता:4.25.37।।

avaropya tatasskandhācchibikāṃ vāhanocitāḥ| tasthurekāntamāśritya sarve śokasamanvitā:4.25.37||

Translation

ततः then, सर्वे all, वाहनोचिताः the carriers of the palanquin, स्कन्धात् from their shoulders, शिबिकाम् palanquin, अवरोप्य brought down, शोकसमन्विताः filled with sorrow, एकान्तम् solitary place, आश्रित्य resorting to, तस्थुः stood.

Meaning

Putting down the palanquin from their shoulders on the lonely spot, the bearers stood in tearswaiting.

KK-25-38Kishkindha Kanda 25.38

ततस्तारा पतिं दृष्ट्वा शिबिकातलशायिनम्4.25.38।। आरोप्याङ्के शिरस्तस्य विललाप सुदुःखिता।

tatastārā patiṃ dṛṣṭvā śibikātalaśāyinam4.25.38|| āropyāṅke śirastasya vilalāpa suduḥkhitā|

Translation

ततः then, तारा Tara, शिबिकातलशायिनम् who was lying on the sibika, पतिम् husband, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, सुदुःखिता a lady full of grief, तस्य his, शिरः head, अङ्के on her lap, आरोप्य placed, विललाप cried.

Meaning

Seeing her husband lying in the palanquin, Tara, full of grief placed Vali's head on her lap and cried.

KK-25-39-40Kishkindha Kanda 25.39–40 (युग्मम्)

हा वानर महाराज हा नाथ मम वत्सल4.25.39।। हा महार्ह महाबाहो हा मम प्रिय पश्य माम्। जनं न पश्यसीमं त्वं कस्माच्छोकाभिपीडितम्।4.25.40।।

hā vānara mahārāja hā nātha mama vatsala4.25.39|| hā mahārha mahābāho hā mama priya paśya mām| janṃ na paśyasīmṃ tvṃ kasmācchokābhipīḍitam|4.25.40||

Translation

हा वानरमहाराज O monkey king, हा मम नाथ O my great husband, हा महार्ह O venerable lord, हा महाबाहो O longarmed one, मम my, प्रिय dear, माम् me, पश्य see, त्वम् you, शोकाभिपीडितम् tormented with tears, इमं जनम् this person, कस्मात् why, न पश्यसि not see?

Meaning

'Why don't you look at me, oppressed with tears, O monkey king, O my venerable lord, O longarmed one, O my dear?

KK-25-41Kishkindha Kanda 25.41

प्रहृष्टमिव ते वक्त्रं गतासोरपि मानद आस्तार्कसमवर्णं च लक्ष्यते जीवतो यथा4.25.41।।

prahṛṣṭamiva te vaktrṃ gatāsorapi mānada āstārkasamavarṇṃ ca lakṣyate jīvato yathā4.25.41||

Translation

मानद revered self, गतासोरपि even though you are bereft of life, ते your, अस्तार्कसमवर्णम् bears the colour of the setting Sun, वक्त्रम् face, जीवतो यथा the same colour when you were alive, इह here, प्रहृष्टम् happy, दृश्यते appears.

Meaning

'O revered self even though you are bereft of life, your face looks cheerful. It carries the colour of the setting Sun, and looks the same when you were alive.

KK-25-42Kishkindha Kanda 25.42

एष त्वां रामरूपेण कालः कर्षति वानर। येन स्म विधवास्सर्वाः कृता एकेषुणा वने4.25.42।।

eṣa tvāṃ rāmarūpeṇa kālḥ karṣati vānara| yena sma vidhavāssarvāḥ kṛtā ekeṣuṇā vane4.25.42||

Translation

वानर monkey, एषः कालः this god of death, त्वाम् you, रामरूपेण in the form of Rama, कर्षति dragged away, येन by that, वने in the forest, एकेषुणा with a single arrow, सर्वाः all, विधवाः widows, कृताः are turned.

Meaning

'O monkey a single arrow from Rama who appeared in the forest in the form of death dragged you away from us and turned us all into widows.

KK-25-43Kishkindha Kanda 25.43

इमास्तास्तव राजेन्द्र वानर्योवल्लभास्सदा। पादैर्विकृष्ट मध्वानमागताः किं न बुध्यसे4.25.43।।

imāstāstava rājendra vānaryovallabhāssadā| pādairvikṛṣṭa madhvānamāgatāḥ kiṃ na budhyase4.25.43||

Translation

राजेन्द्र O king of kings, तव your, ताः those, वानर्यः female monkeys, वल्लभाः wives who were dear to you, पादैः on foot, तव your, विकृष्टम् long, अध्वानम् path, आगताः have come, किम् why, न बुध्यसे do you not know.

Meaning

'O king of kings why don't you understand that these female monkeys, your wives who were dear to you have come on foot this long distance with great difficulty?

KK-25-44Kishkindha Kanda 25.44

तवेष्टा ननु नामैता भार्याश्चन्द्रनिभाननाः। इदानीं नेक्षसे कस्तात्सुग्रीवं प्लवगेश्वरम्4.25.44।।

taveṣṭā nanu nāmaitā bhāryāścandranibhānanāḥ| idānīṃ nekṣase kastātsugrīvṃ plavageśvaram4.25.44||

Translation

प्लवगेश्वरम् lord of monkeys, इमाः these, चन्द्रनिभाननाः moonfaced women, भार्याः wives, तव you, इष्टाः ननु your favourite ones indeed, इदानीम् now, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, कस्मात् why, न वेक्षसे not seeing.

Meaning

'O lord of monkeys these moonfaced wives were indeed once your favourites. Why don't you look at them? Why don't you look Sugriva?

KK-25-45Kishkindha Kanda 25.45

एते हि सचिवा राजं स्तारप्रभृतयस्तव। पुरवासी जनश्चायं परिवार्यासतेऽनघ4.25.45।।

ete hi sacivā rājṃ stāraprabhṛtayastava| puravāsī janaścāyṃ parivāryāsate'nagha4.25.45||

Translation

राजन् O king, तारप्रभृतयः Tara and others, एते these, तव सचिवाः your ministers, अयम् this, पुरवासिजनः inhabitants of the capital, परिवार्य by surrounding you, आसते they are sitting, अनघ O sinless hero.

Meaning

'O king O sinless hero Tara and others, your ministers as well as the inhabitants of the capital are here sitting around you.

KK-25-46Kishkindha Kanda 25.46

विसर्जयैतान् प्लवगान्यथोचितमरिन्दम। ततः क्रीडामहे सर्वा वनेषु मदनोत्कटाः4.25.46।।

visarjayaitān plavagānyathocitamarindama| tatḥ krīḍāmahe sarvā vaneṣu madanotkaṭāḥ4.25.46||

Translation

अरिन्दम O conqueror of enemies, एतान् all of them, प्लवगान् monkeys, यथोचितं in accordance with their position, विसर्जय send them, ततः then, मदनोत्कटाः in a passionate way, सर्वाः all of us, वनेषु in the forest, क्रीडामहे will be sporting.

Meaning

'O conqueror of enemies give these monkeys their due in accordance with their status and send them back as you used to do when they were passionately sporting in your company here in this forest.

KK-25-47Kishkindha Kanda 25.47

एवं विलपतीं तारां पतिशोकपरिप्लुताम्। उत्थापयन्ति स्म तदा वानर्यश्शोककर्शिताः4.25.47।।

evṃ vilapatīṃ tārāṃ patiśokapariplutām| utthāpayanti sma tadā vānaryaśśokakarśitāḥ4.25.47||

Translation

एवम् in that way, विलपतीम् mourning, पतिशोकपरिप्लुताम् overwhelmed with sorrow due to the death of the husband, ताराम् Tara, तदा then, शोककर्शिताः those overtaken by grief, वानर्यः female monkeys, उत्थापयन्ति स्म helped her to stand up.

Meaning

The griefstricken female monkeys helped Tara, overwhelmed with sorrow due to her husband's death, rise from the ground.

KK-25-48Kishkindha Kanda 25.48

सुग्रीवेण ततस्सार्धंमङ्गदः पितरं रुदन्। चितामारोपयामास शोकेनाभिहतेन्द्रियः4.25.48।।

sugrīveṇa tatassārdhṃmaṅgadḥ pitarṃ rudan| citāmāropayāmāsa śokenābhihatendriyḥ4.25.48||

Translation

ततः then, सः अङ्गदः that Angada, सुग्रीवेण सार्धम् along with Sugriva, रुदन् crying, शोकेन in sorrow, अभिहतेन्द्रियः with his senses numbed, पितरम् father, चिताम् on the pyre, आरोपयामास placed.

Meaning

Then Angada, helped by Sugriva, placed his father's body on the pyre, with his senses numbed in deep sorrow.

KK-25-49Kishkindha Kanda 25.49

ततोऽग्निं विधिवद्दत्त्वा सोऽपसव्यं चकार ह। पितरं दीर्घमध्वानं प्रस्थितं व्याकुलेन्द्रियः4.25.49।।

tato'gniṃ vidhivaddattvā so'pasavyṃ cakāra ha| pitarṃ dīrghamadhvānṃ prasthitṃ vyākulendriyḥ4.25.49||

Translation

ततः then, सः he, व्याकुलेन्द्रियः with disturbed senses, विधिवत् as per tradition, अग्निम् fire, दत्वा offering, दीर्घम् long distance, अध्वानम् way, प्रस्थितम् departing, पितरम् to father, अपसव्यं चकार went round once in an anteclock manner.

Meaning

Overwhelmed with sorrow, he offered fire to the father who had set out on a long journey (to heaven). As per tradition he went round the pyre anteclock wise.

KK-25-50Kishkindha Kanda 25.50

संस्कृत्य वालिनं ते तु विधिपूर्वं प्लवङ्गमाः। आजग्मुरुदकं कर्तुं नदीं शुभजलां शिवाम्4.25.50।।

sṃskṛtya vālinṃ te tu vidhipūrvṃ plavaṅgamāḥ| ājagmurudakṃ kartuṃ nadīṃ śubhajalāṃ śivām4.25.50||

Translation

प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, तं वालिनम् that Vali, विधिवत् as per tradition, संस्कृत्य after allowing it to be consumed by fire, उदकं कर्तुम् made waterofferings, शुभजलाम् a place of pure water, शिवाम् auspicious, नदीम् river, आजग्मुः reached.

Meaning

The monkeys set Vali's body to be consumed by fire as per tradition and proceeded to an auspicious river of pure water in order to offer oblation (to the departed soul).

KK-25-51Kishkindha Kanda 25.51

ततस्ते सहितास्तत्र ह्यङ्गदं स्थाप्य चाग्रतः। सुग्रीवतारासहितास्सिषिचुर्वालिने जलम्4.25.51।।

tataste sahitāstatra hyaṅgadṃ sthāpya cāgratḥ| sugrīvatārāsahitāssiṣicurvāline jalam4.25.51||

Translation

ततः then, सुग्रीवतारासहिताः along with Sugriva and Tara, ते वानराः those monkeys, तत्र there, सहिताः collectively, अङ्गदम् Angada, अग्रतः in front, स्थाप्य by placing, जलम् water, सिषिचुः they offered.

Meaning

Then the monkeys along with Sugriva and Tara positioning Angada in the forefront made waterofferings (to Vali) collectively.

KK-25-52Kishkindha Kanda 25.52

सुग्रीवेणेव दीनेन दीनो भूत्वा महाबलः। समानशोकः काकुत्स्थ: प्रेतकार्याण्यकारयत्4.25.52।।

sugrīveṇeva dīnena dīno bhūtvā mahābalḥ| samānaśokḥ kākutstha: pretakāryāṇyakārayat4.25.52||

Translation

महाबलः mighty, काकुत्स्थ: Kakutstha, दीनेन by the piteous, सुग्रीवेण with Sugriva, इव as though, समानशोकः equally sad, दीनः pitiable one, भूत्वा was equally, प्रेतकार्याणि funeral rites, अकारयत् directed.

Meaning

Mighty Rama, who was equally sorrowful and pitiable as Sugriva, directed the performance of funeral rites.
