KK-21-1Kishkindha Kanda 21.1

ततो निपतितां तारां च्युतां तारामिवाम्बरात्। शनैराश्वासयामास हनुमान्हरियूथपः4.21.1।।

tato nipatitāṃ tārāṃ cyutāṃ tārāmivāmbarāt| śanairāśvāsayāmāsa hanumānhariyūthapḥ4.21.1||

Translation

ततः then, अम्बरात् from the sky, च्युताम् fallen down, तारामिव like a star, निपतिताम् fallen on the ground, ताराम् Tara, हरियूथपः leader of the monkey clan, हनुमान् Hanuman, शनैः slowly, आश्वासयामास consoled.

Meaning

Thereafter Hanuman, leader of the monkey clan, slowly consoled Tara who was (standing before her husband) like a star fallen from the sky.

KK-21-2Kishkindha Kanda 21.2

गुणदोषकृतं जन्तुस्स्वकर्म फलहेतुकम्। अव्यग्रस्तदवाप्नोति सर्वं प्रेत्य शुभाशुभम्4.21.2।।

guṇadoṣakṛtṃ jantussvakarma phalahetukam| avyagrastadavāpnoti sarvṃ pretya śubhāśubham4.21.2||

Translation

जन्तुः an embodied soul, गुणदोषकृतम् by virtue of their good and bad deeds, फलहेतुकम् the fruits of actions, सर्वम् all, तत् that, शुभाशुभम् whether good and bad, कर्म deed, प्रेत्य after death, अव्यग्रः gradually, आप्नोति attains.

Meaning

'On departing from this mortal world an embodied soul reaps gradually the good and evil fruits of action performed under the notion of virtue or vice with an eye to their good or evil consequences.

KK-21-3Kishkindha Kanda 21.3

शोच्या शोचसि कं शोच्यं दीनं दीनाऽनुकम्पसे। कस्य कोवाऽनुशोच्योऽस्ति देहेऽस्मिन् बुद्बुदोपमे4.21.3।।

śocyā śocasi kṃ śocyṃ dīnṃ dīnā'nukampase| kasya kovā'nuśocyo'sti dehe'smin budbudopame4.21.3||

Translation

शोच्या worry, शोच्यम् a matter to grieve, कम् whom, शोचसि you are grieving, दीना in a miserable manner, अनुकम्पसे you show sympathy, अस्मिन् in this, देहे body, बुद्बुदोपमे like a bubble, कः who, कस्य for whom, अनुशोच्यः worthy of worrying, अस्ति now.

Meaning

'For whom do you grieve except for yourself? You are miserable. Who are you sympathising with? Who are you grieving for? When this body itself is like a bubble, who is worth grieving for?

KK-21-4Kishkindha Kanda 21.4

अङ्गदस्तु कुमारोऽयं द्रष्टव्यो जीवपुत्रया। अयत्यां च विधेयानि समर्थान्यस्य चिन्तय4.21.4।।

aṅgadastu kumāro'yṃ draṣṭavyo jīvaputrayā| ayatyāṃ ca vidheyāni samarthānyasya cintaya4.21.4||

Translation

जीवपुत्रया who has a son surviving, कुमारः prince, अयम् this, अङ्गदः Angada, द्रष्टव्यः should be looked after, आयत्याम् in future, अस्य his, विधेयानि duties, समर्थानि properly, चिन्तय you may think of.

Meaning

'You are mother of a surviving son, Angada. You have to look after him in times to come. Think of the duties to be performed now.

KK-21-5Kishkindha Kanda 21.5

जानास्यनियतामेवं भूतानामागतिं गतिम्। तस्माच्छुभं हि कर्तव्यं पण्डितेनैह लौकिकम्।।4.21.5।।

jānāsyaniyatāmevṃ bhūtānāmāgatiṃ gatim| tasmācchubhṃ hi kartavyṃ paṇḍitenaiha laukikam||4.21.5||

Translation

भूतानाम् for all beings, आगतिम् transient happenings, अनियताम् एव as it is unstable, जानासि you know, तस्मात् therefore, पण्डितेन by the wise, इह here, लौकिकम् worldly, शुभम् auspicious, कर्तव्यं हि is to be done.

Meaning

'You are aware of the uncertain and transient happenings in the lives of living beings. Therefore, a wise lady should do auspicious work in this world.

KK-21-6Kishkindha Kanda 21.6

यस्मिन्हरिसहस्राणि प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च। वर्तयन्ति कृतांशानि सोऽयं दिष्टान्तमागतः4.21.6।।

yasminharisahasrāṇi prayutānyarbudāni ca| vartayanti kṛtāṃśāni so'yṃ diṣṭāntamāgatḥ4.21.6||

Translation

यस्मिन् in whom, कृतांशानि pinning their hopes, हरिसहस्राणि thousands of monkeys, प्रयुतानि in millions, अर्बुदानि च and tens of millions, वर्तयन्ति sustain, सः he, अयम् this, दिष्टान्तम् to enjoy the fruits of his good deeds, आगतः reached.

Meaning

'Tens of millions of monkeys depended on this hero with their hopes on him. He has reached his ultimate destiny now to enjoy the fruits of his good deeds.

KK-21-7Kishkindha Kanda 21.7

यदयं न्यायदृष्टार्थस्सामदानक्षमापरः। गतो धर्मजितां भूमिं नैनं शोचितुमर्हसि4.21.7।।

yadayṃ nyāyadṛṣṭārthassāmadānakṣamāparḥ| gato dharmajitāṃ bhūmiṃ nainṃ śocitumarhasi4.21.7||

Translation

न्यायदृष्टार्थः who has right vision, सामदानक्षमापरः adopts the sama(conciliation) dana (charity) and forgiveness (as means of administration), अयम् this hero, यत् such, धर्मजिताम् of those who win righteously, भूमिम् earth, गतः reached, एवम् in that way, शोचितुम् to mourn, नार्हसि not proper.

Meaning

'This hero with a right vision, adopted the means of conciliation, charity and forgiveness (in his administration) and has finally reached a position through righteousness in his death. It is not proper to mourn for him.

KK-21-8Kishkindha Kanda 21.8

सर्वे हि हरिशार्दूलाः पुत्रश्चायं तवाङ्गदः। इदं हर्यृक्षपतिराज्यं च त्वत्सनाथमनिन्दिते4.21.8।।

sarve hi hariśārdūlāḥ putraścāyṃ tavāṅgadḥ| idṃ haryṛkṣapatirājyṃ ca tvatsanāthamanindite4.21.8||

Translation

अनिन्दिते O blemishless lady, सर्वे all, हरिशार्दूलाः tigers among monkeys, तव your, पुत्रः son, अयम् this, अङ्गदश्च Angada's, हर्यृक्षपतिराज्यं च and the kingdom of monkeys and bears, त्वत्सनाथम् under your protection.

Meaning

'O blemishless lady these great monkeys including your son Angada and the entire kingdom of monkeys and bears are under your protection.

KK-21-9Kishkindha Kanda 21.9

ताविमौ शोकसन्तप्तौ शनैः प्रेरय भामिनि। त्वया परिगृहीतोऽयमङ्गदश्शास्तु मेदिनीम्4.21.9।।

tāvimau śokasantaptau śanaiḥ preraya bhāmini| tvayā parigṛhīto'yamaṅgadaśśāstu medinīm4.21.9||

Translation

भामिनि O fair sex, शोकसन्तप्तौ immersed in grief, तौ इमौ they both, शनैः slowly, प्रेरय you may encourage, त्वया by you, परिगृहीतः protected, अयम् this, अङ्गदः Angada, मेदिनीम् earth, शास्तु he may command.

Meaning

'O fair sex Encourage these two griefstricken heroes (Angada and Sugriva) gently. Let Angada rule this earth under your protection.

KK-21-10Kishkindha Kanda 21.10

सन्ततिश्च यथा दृष्टा कृत्यं यच्चापि साम्प्रतम्। राज्ञस्तत्क्रियतां सर्वमेष कालस्य निश्चयः4.21.10।।

santatiśca yathā dṛṣṭā kṛtyṃ yaccāpi sāmpratam| rājñastatkriyatāṃ sarvameṣa kālasya niścayḥ4.21.10||

Translation

सन्ततिः a son, यथा that way, दृष्टा after seeing, साम्प्रतम् presently, राज्ञः to king Vali, यत् all such thing, कृत्यं चापि and done, तत् that, सर्वम् all, क्रियताम् may be carried out, एषः this, कालस्य at this time, निश्चयः is the decision.

KK-21-11Kishkindha Kanda 21.11

संस्कार्यो हरिराजश्च अङ्गदश्चाभिषिच्यताम्। सिंहासनगतं पुत्रं पश्यन्ती शान्तिमेष्यसि4.21.11।।

sṃskāryo harirājaśca aṅgadaścābhiṣicyatām| siṃhāsanagatṃ putrṃ paśyantī śāntimeṣyasi4.21.11||

Translation

हरिराजः king of monkeys, संस्कार्यः all rituals should be performed, अङ्गदश्च by Angada, अभिषिच्यताम् may be consecrated, सिंहासनगतम् seated on the throne, पुत्रम् son, पश्यन्ती while you are looking at him, शान्तिम् peace, एष्यसि you will attain.

Meaning

'Let all the rituals of the king of vanaras be performed. Let Angada be consecrated. You will attain peace of mind to see your son seated on the throne.'

KK-21-12Kishkindha Kanda 21.12

सा तस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा भर्तृव्यसनपीडिता। अब्रवीदुत्तरं तारा हनूमन्तमवस्थितम्4.21.12।।

sā tasya vacanṃ śrutvā bhartṛvyasanapīḍitā| abravīduttarṃ tārā hanūmantamavasthitam4.21.12||

Translation

भर्तृव्यसनपीडिता tormented by the husband's death, सा तारा that Tara, तस्य his, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, अवस्थितम् waiting, हनूमन्तम् to Hanumanta, अवस्थितम् who was waiting, उत्तरम् reply, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

On hearing Hanuman's words, Tara, tormented by the death of her husband said to Hanuman who was waiting for her reply:

KK-21-13Kishkindha Kanda 21.13

अङ्गदप्रतिरूपाणां पुत्राणामेकतश्शतम्। हतस्याप्यस्य वीरस्य गात्रसंश्लेषणं वरम्4.21.13।।

aṅgadapratirūpāṇāṃ putrāṇāmekataśśatam| hatasyāpyasya vīrasya gātrasṃśleṣaṇṃ varam4.21.13||

Translation

अङ्गदप्रतिरूपाणाम् of those who may be prototypes of Angada, पुत्राणाम् of sons, शतम् one hundred, एकतः on one side, हतस्यापि even if he is slayed, अस्य his, वीरस्य warrior's, गात्रसंश्लेषणम् embracing the body, वरम् is better.

Meaning

'To embrace even the deadbody of this hero is better than (to embrace) a hundred prototypes of Angada.

KK-21-14Kishkindha Kanda 21.14

न चाहं हरिराजस्य प्रभवाम्यङ्गदस्य वा। पितृव्यस्तस्य सुग्रीवस्सर्वकार्येष्वनन्तरः4.21.14।।

na cāhṃ harirājasya prabhavāmyaṅgadasya vā| pitṛvyastasya sugrīvassarvakāryeṣvanantarḥ4.21.14||

Translation

अहम् I am, हरिराजस्य of the king of monkeys, अङ्गदस्य वा or about Angada, न प्रभवामि not the right, तस्य his, पितृव्यः father's brother, सर्वकार्येषु in all tasks, अनन्तरः herafter.

KK-21-15Kishkindha Kanda 21.15

न ह्येषाबुद्धिरास्थेया हनूमन्नङ्गदं प्रति। पिता हि बन्धुः पुत्रस्य न माता हरिसत्तम4.21.15।।

na hyeṣābuddhirāstheyā hanūmannaṅgadṃ prati| pitā hi bandhuḥ putrasya na mātā harisattama4.21.15||

Translation

हनुमान् O Hanuman, अङ्गदं प्रति for Angada, एषा that way, बुद्धि: thought, न आस्थेयाः not to be entertained, हरिसत्तम best of monkeys, पुत्रस्य son's, पिता father, बन्धुः relation, माता mother, न none else.

Meaning

'O Hanuman the best of monkeys, you need not think about (the future of) Angada. A father plans for a son and not (even) the mother.

KK-21-16Kishkindha Kanda 21.16

न हि मम हरिराजसंश्रयात् क्षमतरमस्ति परत्र चेह वा। अभिमुखहतवीरसेवितं शयनमिदं मम सेवितुं क्षमम्4.21.16।।

na hi mama harirājasṃśrayāt kṣamataramasti paratra ceha vā| abhimukhahatavīrasevitṃ śayanamidṃ mama sevituṃ kṣamam4.21.16||

Translation

मम my, इह वा in this world or, परत्र वा or in the next world, हरिराजसंश्रयात् other than joining king of monkeys, क्षमतरम् a safer course, न अस्ति हि is not found, अभिमुखहतवीरसेवितम् used by this slain warrior in front of me, इदं this, शयनम् resting place, सेवितुम् to rest, मम for me, क्षमम् is fitting.

Meaning

There is nothing more befitting for me than joining the king of monkeys either here or in the next world. It is proper for me to resort to this resting place (pyre) used by this slain hero in front of me. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे एकविंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the twentyfirst sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
