KK-11-1Kishkindha Kanda 11.1

रामस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा हर्षपौरुषवर्धनम्। सुग्रीवः पूजयाञ्चक्रे राघवं प्रशशंस च4.11.1।।

rāmasya vacanṃ śrutvā harṣapauruṣavardhanam| sugrīvḥ pūjayāñcakre rāghavṃ praśaśṃsa ca4.11.1||

Translation

सुग्रीवः Sugriva, रामस्य Rama's, हर्षपौरुषवर्धनम् joy and manliness increased, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा heard, राघवम् to Rama, पूजयाञ्चक्रे offered prayers, प्रशशंस च and praised.

Meaning

The words of Rama boosted Sugriva's joy and manliness. He offered him prayers and praise:

KK-11-2Kishkindha Kanda 11.2

असंशयं प्रज्वलितैस्तीक्ष्णैर्मर्मातिगैश्शरैः। त्वं दहेः कुपितो लोकान्युगान्त इव भास्करः4.11.2।।

asṃśayṃ prajvalitaistīkṣṇairmarmātigaiśśaraiḥ| tvṃ daheḥ kupito lokānyugānta iva bhāskarḥ4.11.2||

Translation

प्रज्वलितैः by blazing, तीक्ष्णैः by the sharp, मर्मातिगैः go through vital parts, शरैः with arrows, कुपितः outraged one, त्वम् you, युगान्ते at the end of the Yuga, भास्करः इव like the Sun, लोकान् worlds, दहेः you many burn, असंशयम् no doubt.

Meaning

'There is no doubt that your sharp, blazing arrows will pierce through the vital parts of the body once you are angry, just as the Sungod burns all worlds at the end of the Yuga.

KK-11-3Kishkindha Kanda 11.3

वालिनः पौरुषं यत्तद्यच्च वीर्यं धृतिश्च या। तन्ममैकमनाश्श्रुत्वा विधत्स्व यदनन्तरम्4.11.3।।

vālinḥ pauruṣṃ yattadyacca vīryṃ dhṛtiśca yā| tanmamaikamanāśśrutvā vidhatsva yadanantaram4.11.3||

Translation

वालिनः Vali's, यत् such, पौरुषम् manliness, तत् that, यत् वीर्यम् such valour, तत् that, या धृतिश्च courage, मम my, एकमनाः concentrate, श्रुत्वा on hearing, यत् which, अनन्तरम् after that, विधत्स्व do what is to be done.

KK-11-4Kishkindha Kanda 11.4

समुद्रात्पश्चिमात्पूर्वं दक्षिणादपि चोत्तरम्। क्रामत्यनुदिते सूर्ये वाली व्यपगतक्लमः4.11.4।।

samudrātpaścimātpūrvṃ dakṣiṇādapi cottaram| krāmatyanudite sūrye vālī vyapagataklamḥ4.11.4||

Translation

वाली Vali, व्यपगतक्लमः without getting tired, सूर्ये when the Sun, अनुदिते has not yet risen, पश्चिमात् from the west, समुद्रात् from the ocean, पूर्वम् east, दक्षिणात् from the south, उत्तरम् north, क्रामति crosses over.

Meaning

'In the early hours before Sunrise Vali crosses over the oceans from the west to the east and moving from south to north (performing sandhya) without getting fatigued.

KK-11-5Kishkindha Kanda 11.5

अग्राण्यारुह्य शैलानां शिखराणि महान्त्यपि। ऊर्ध्वमुत्क्षिप्य तरसा प्रतिगृह्णाति वीर्यवान्4.11.5।।

agrāṇyāruhya śailānāṃ śikharāṇi mahāntyapi| ūrdhvamutkṣipya tarasā pratigṛhṇāti vīryavān4.11.5||

Translation

वीर्यवान् valiant , शैलानाम् of the mountains, आग्राणि tops, आरुह्य ascending, महान्ति huge, शिखराणि peaks, तरसा speedily, ऊर्ध्वम् upward, उत्क्षिप्य climbing, प्रतिगृह्णाति catches.

Meaning

'Climbing up speedily, valiant Vali would catch the huge mountain peaks.

KK-11-6Kishkindha Kanda 11.6

बहवस्सारवन्तश्च वनेषु विविधा द्रुमाः। वालिना तरसा भग्ना बलं प्रथयताऽत्मनः4.11.6।।

bahavassāravantaśca vaneṣu vividhā drumāḥ| vālinā tarasā bhagnā balṃ prathayatā'tmanḥ4.11.6||

Translation

आत्मनः his, बलम् strength, प्रथयता exihibiting, वालिना by Vali, वनेषु in the forests, सारवन्तः sturdy, विविधाः several, बहवः many, द्रुमाः trees, तरसा with vigour, भग्नाः break

Meaning

'Vali would break several sturdy trees in the forest with his vigour and speed, exhibiting his strength.

KK-11-7Kishkindha Kanda 11.7

महिषो दुन्दुभिर्नाम कैलासशिखरप्रभः। बलं नागसहस्रस्य धारयामास वीर्यवान्4.11.7।।

mahiṣo dundubhirnāma kailāsaśikharaprabhḥ| balṃ nāgasahasrasya dhārayāmāsa vīryavān4.11.7||

Translation

कैलासशिखरप्रभः shining like the peak of mount Kailas, वीर्यवान् valiant one, महिषः mighty buffalo, दुन्दुभिः नाम by name Dundubhi, नागसहस्रस्य of a thousand elephants, बलम् strength, धारयामास possessed.

Meaning

'Massive like the shining peak of mount Kailas and valiant like the mightybuffalo in form, Dundubhi possessed the strength of a thousand elephants.

KK-11-8Kishkindha Kanda 11.8

वीर्योत्सेकेन दुष्टात्मा वरदानाच्च मोहितः। जगाम सुमहाकाय स्समुद्रं सरितां पतिम्।।4.11.8।।

vīryotsekena duṣṭātmā varadānācca mohitḥ| jagāma sumahākāya ssamudrṃ saritāṃ patim||4.11.8||

Translation

वीर्योत्सेकेन proud of valour, वरदानात् by virtue of boons, मोहितः deluded, दुष्टात्मा wickedself, महाकायः of huge body, सः he (Dundubhi), सरितां पतिम् lord of rivers, समुद्रम् to ocean, जगाम went.

Meaning

'Wicked Dundubhi of huge body was proud of his valour and deluded by virtue of the boons, went to the ocean, the lord of rivers.

KK-11-9Kishkindha Kanda 11.9

ऊर्मिमन्तमभिक्रम्य सागरं रत्नसञ्चयम्। मह्यं युद्धं प्रयच्छेति तमुवाच महार्णवम्4.11.9।।

ūrmimantamabhikramya sāgarṃ ratnasañcayam| mahyṃ yuddhṃ prayaccheti tamuvāca mahārṇavam4.11.9||

Translation

ऊर्मिमन्तम् with waves, रत्नसञ्चयम् a hoarder of gems, सागरम् ocean, अभिक्रम्य after reaching, मह्यं to me, युद्धम् war, प्रयच्छ give, इति thus, तम् him, महार्णवम् mighty ocean, उवाच said.

Meaning

'Reaching the mighty ocean, he implored the sea with (high) waves and hoards of gems for a fight.

KK-11-10Kishkindha Kanda 11.10

ततस्समुद्रो धर्मात्मा समुत्थाय महाबलः। अब्रवीद्वचनं राजन्नसुरं कालचोदितम्4.11.10।।

tatassamudro dharmātmā samutthāya mahābalḥ| abravīdvacanṃ rājannasurṃ kālacoditam4.11.10||

Translation

राजन् O king, ततः then, धर्मात्मा righteous self, महाबलः powerful समुद्रः ocean, समुत्थाय rising, कालचोदितम् driven to death by fate, असुरम् demon, वचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

'O king, then the powerful and righteous king of the ocean came out and spoke to the demon (Dundubhi) who was driven to death by fate.'

KK-11-11Kishkindha Kanda 11.11

समर्थो नास्मि ते दातुं युद्धं युद्धविशारद। श्रूयतां चाभिधास्यामि यस्ते युद्धं प्रदास्यति4.11.11।।

samartho nāsmi te dātuṃ yuddhṃ yuddhaviśārada| śrūyatāṃ cābhidhāsyāmi yaste yuddhṃ pradāsyati4.11.11||

Translation

युद्धविशारद O warrior proficient in war, ते to you, युद्धम् war, दातुम् to offer (challenge), समर्थः not capable, नास्मि I am not, यः he who, ते to you, युद्धम् war, प्रदास्यति will give, अभिधास्यामि I can name him, श्रूयताम् listen.

Meaning

'You are proficient in warfare. I am not competent enough to challenge you to a duel. But I will name the one who can.

KK-11-12-13Kishkindha Kanda 11.12–13 (युग्मम्)

शैलराजो महारण्ये तपस्विशरणं परम्। शङ्करश्वशुरो नाम्ना हिमवानिति विश्रुतः4.11.12।। गुहाप्रस्रवणोपेतो बहुकन्दरनिर्दरः। स समर्थस्तव प्रीतिमतुलां कर्तुमाहवे4.11.13।।

śailarājo mahāraṇye tapasviśaraṇṃ param| śaṅkaraśvaśuro nāmnā himavāniti viśrutḥ4.11.12|| guhāprasravaṇopeto bahukandaranirdarḥ| sa samarthastava prītimatulāṃ kartumāhave4.11.13||

Translation

परम् supreme, तपस्विशरणम् abode of ascetics, शङ्करश्वशुरः fatherinlaw of lord Siva, हिमवानिति Himavan, नाम्ना by name, विश्रुतः wellknown, महाप्रस्रवणोपेतः great waterfalls, बहुकन्दरनिर्दरः many caves and caverns, शैलराजः king of mountains, महारण्ये in the great forest, सः he, समर्थः is competent, तव to you, अतुलाम् incomparable, प्रीतिम् love, कर्तुम् to do, आहवे in the war.

Meaning

'Himavan, the supreme abode of ascetics is the fatherinlaw of Lord Siva. He is wellknown as king of mountains, who has, waterfalls, caves, caverns and great forests.He is competent to match your incomparable love for war.

KK-11-14-15Kishkindha Kanda 11.14–15 (युग्मम्)

तं भीत इति विज्ञाय समुद्रमसुरोत्तमः। हिमवद्वनमागच्छच्छरश्चापादिव च्युतः4.11.14।। ततस्तस्य गिरेश्श्वेता गजेन्द्रविप्रलाश्शिलाः। चिक्षेप बहुधा भूमौ दुन्दुभिर्विननाद च4.11.15।।

tṃ bhīta iti vijñāya samudramasurottamḥ| himavadvanamāgacchaccharaścāpādiva cyutḥ4.11.14|| tatastasya gireśśvetā gajendravipralāśśilāḥ| cikṣepa bahudhā bhūmau dundubhirvinanāda ca4.11.15||

Translation

असुरोत्तमः best of demons, दुन्दुभिः Dundubhi, तम् him, समुद्रम् ocean, भीतः frightened, इति thus, विज्ञाय knowing, चापात् from the bow, च्युतः released, शर इव arrowlike, हिमवद्वनम् forest of Himavan, आगम्य reached, ततः then, तस्य गिरेः of that mountain, श्वेताः white, गजेन्द्र (like) elephants, विप्रला huge, शिलाः rocks, बहुधा several, भूमौ on the earth, चिक्षेप threw, विननाद roared, च also.

Meaning

'Dundubhi, the most powerful of demons, aware that the ocean is frightened of him went swiftly to Himavan like an arrow released from a bow. He raised many huge white cliffs of the size of great elephants to the ground and roared.

KK-11-16Kishkindha Kanda 11.16

ततश्श्वेताम्बुदाकारः सौम्यः प्रीतिकराकृतिः। हिमवानब्रवीद्वाक्यं स्वे एव शिखरे स्थितः4.11.16।।

tataśśvetāmbudākārḥ saumyḥ prītikarākṛtiḥ| himavānabravīdvākyṃ sve eva śikhare sthitḥ4.11.16||

Translation

ततः then, श्वेताम्बुदाकारः in a white cloudlike form, सौम्यः a gentle one, प्रीतिकराकृतिः one who has a pleasing appearance, हिमवान् Himavan, स्वे on his own, शिखरे एव on the peak, स्थितः he stood, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

'Then the gentle Himavan of pleasing appearance stood in the form of a white cloud on the peak and spoke:

KK-11-17Kishkindha Kanda 11.17

क्लेष्टुमर्हसि मां न त्वं दुन्दुभे धर्मवत्सल। रणकर्मस्वकुशलस्तपस्विशरणं ह्यहम्4.11.17।।

kleṣṭumarhasi māṃ na tvṃ dundubhe dharmavatsala| raṇakarmasvakuśalastapasviśaraṇṃ hyaham4.11.17||

Translation

धर्मवत्सल devoted to dharma, दुन्दुभे Dundubhi, त्वम् you, माम् me, क्लेष्टुम् to trouble, नार्हसि it is not proper, तपस्विशरणम् the resort of ascetics, अहम् I am, रणकर्मसु to wage war, अकुशलः हि not adept

Meaning

'Dundubhi, it is not proper for you to trouble me, for I am devoted to righteousness. I am the resort of ascetics and not adept in warfare'.

KK-11-18Kishkindha Kanda 11.18

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा गिरिराजस्य धीमतः। उवाच दुन्दुभिर्वाक्यं क्रोधात्संरक्तलोचनः4.11.18।।

tasya tadvacanṃ śrutvā girirājasya dhīmatḥ| uvāca dundubhirvākyṃ krodhātsṃraktalocanḥ4.11.18||

Translation

दुन्दुभिः Dundubhi, धीमतः of the wise one, तस्य गिरिराजस्य of that king of mountains, तत् that, वचनम् word, श्रुत्वा after hearing, क्रोधात् angrily, संरक्तलोचनः with eyes turned red, वाक्यम् these words, उवाच said.

Meaning

"At these words of Himavan, the wise king of mountains, Dundubhi whose eyes turned red in anger replied:

KK-11-19Kishkindha Kanda 11.19

यदि युद्धेऽसमर्थस्त्वं मद्भयाद्वा निरुद्यमः। समाचक्ष्व प्रदद्यान्मे योऽद्य युद्धं युयुत्सतः4.11.19।।

yadi yuddhe'samarthastvṃ madbhayādvā nirudyamḥ| samācakṣva pradadyānme yo'dya yuddhṃ yuyutsatḥ4.11.19||

Translation

त्वम् you, युद्धे in a duel, असमर्थः यदि if in capable, वा or else, मद्भयात् due to fear of me, निरुद्यमः unwilling, यः whosoever, युयुत्सतः wants to fight, मे with me, युद्धम् duel, प्रदद्यात् give me a challenge, समाचक्ष्व tell me.

Meaning

'If you are unable or unwilling to fight me out of fear, tell me who wants to challenge me to a duel.

KK-11-20Kishkindha Kanda 11.20

हिमवानब्रवीद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा वाक्यविशारदः। अनुक्तपूर्वं धर्मात्मा क्रोधात्तमसुरोत्तमम्4.11.20।।

himavānabravīdvākyṃ śrutvā vākyaviśāradḥ| anuktapūrvṃ dharmātmā krodhāttamasurottamam4.11.20||

Translation

वाक्यविशारदः skilful in conversation, धर्मात्मा righteous, हिमवान् Himavan, श्रुत्वा on hearing, तम् him, असुरोत्तमम् best of demon, क्रोधात् in anger, अनुक्तपूर्वम् had not spoken earlier, वाक्यम् such words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

'On hearing such words, which no one had spoken earlier, righteous Himavan, skilful in conversation, flew into a rage and said to Dundubhi,the best of demons:

KK-11-21Kishkindha Kanda 11.21

वाली नाम महाप्राज्ञश्शक्रतुल्य पराक्रमः। अध्यास्ते वानरश्श्रीमान् किष्किन्धामतुलप्रभाम्4.11.21।।

vālī nāma mahāprājñaśśakratulya parākramḥ| adhyāste vānaraśśrīmān kiṣkindhāmatulaprabhām4.11.21||

Translation

महाप्राज्ञः wise one, शक्रपुत्रः son of Indra, प्रतापवान् powerful, श्रीमान् prosperous one, वाली नाम Vali by name, वानरः monkey, अतुलप्रभाम् of incomparable glory, किष्किन्धाम् Kishkindha, अध्यास्ते residing.

Meaning

'Vali, son of Indra, is a wise, powerful and prosperous monkey. He resides at Kishkinda, a city of incomparable glory.

KK-11-22Kishkindha Kanda 11.22

स समर्थो महाप्राज्ञस्तव युद्धविशारदः। द्वन्द्वयुद्धं महद्दातुं नमुचेरिव वासवः4.11.22।।

sa samartho mahāprājñastava yuddhaviśāradḥ| dvandvayuddhṃ mahaddātuṃ namuceriva vāsavḥ4.11.22||

Translation

महाप्राज्ञः wise, युद्धविशारदः expert in warfare, सः he, वासवः Indra, नमुचेरिव like Namuchi, तव to you, महत् great, द्वन्द्वयुद्धम् duel, दातुम् to give (challenge), समर्थः competent.

Meaning

'Vali is profoundly wise, an expert in warfare. He is capable of challenging you to a duel like Indra to Namuchi.

KK-11-23Kishkindha Kanda 11.23

तं शीघ्रमभिगच्छ त्वं यदि युद्धमिहेच्छसि। स हि दुर्धर्षणो नित्यं शूरस्समरकर्मणि4.11.23।।

tṃ śīghramabhigaccha tvṃ yadi yuddhamihecchasi| sa hi durdharṣaṇo nityṃ śūrassamarakarmaṇi4.11.23||

Translation

इह now, युद्धम् fight, इच्छसि यदि if you want to fight, त्वम् you, शीघ्रम् quickly, तम् him, अभिगच्छ go now, शूरः heroic, सः he, नित्यम् ever, समरकर्मणि in warfare, दुर्धर्षणः हि difficult to combat.

Meaning

'If you wish to fight, go to him quickly.He is ever heroic and difficult to combat.

KK-11-24Kishkindha Kanda 11.24

श्रुत्वा हिमवतो वाक्यं कोधाविष्टस्स दुन्दुभिः। जगाम तां पुरीं तस्य किष्किन्धां वालिनस्तदा4.11.24।।

śrutvā himavato vākyṃ kodhāviṣṭassa dundubhiḥ| jagāma tāṃ purīṃ tasya kiṣkindhāṃ vālinastadā4.11.24||

Translation

तदा then, सः दुन्दुभिः that Dundubhi, हिमवतः Himavan's, वाक्यम् words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, कोपाविष्टः seized with anger, तस्य his वालिनः Vali's, पुरीम् city, किष्किन्धाम् Kishkinda, जगाम went.

Meaning

'Having heard Himavan, Dundubhi, seized with anger, went to Kishkindha, the city of Vali.

KK-11-25-26Kishkindha Kanda 11.25–26 (युग्मम्)

धारयन्माहिषं रूपं तीक्ष्णशृङ्गो भयावहः। प्रावृषीव महामेघस्तोयपूर्णो नभस्स्थले4.11.25।। ततस्तु द्वारमागम्य किष्किन्धाया महाबलः। ननर्द कम्पयन्भूमिं दुन्दुभिर्दुन्दुभिर्यथा4.11.26।।

dhārayanmāhiṣṃ rūpṃ tīkṣṇaśṛṅgo bhayāvahḥ| prāvṛṣīva mahāmeghastoyapūrṇo nabhassthale4.11.25|| tatastu dvāramāgamya kiṣkindhāyā mahābalḥ| nanarda kampayanbhūmiṃ dundubhirdundubhiryathā4.11.26||

Translation

महाबलः mighty, दुन्दुभिः Dundubhi, माहिषम् buffalo, रूपम् form, धारयन् assuming, तीक्ष्णशृङ्गः pointed horns, भयावहः frightening, प्रावृषि in rainy season, नभस्तले in the sky, तोयपूर्णः laden with water, महामेघ इव like a huge cloud, किष्किन्धायाः Kishkinda's, द्वारम् entrance, आगम्य reached, भूमिम् earth, कम्पयन् shaking, दुन्दुभिर्यथा like Dundubhi a wardrum, ननर्द roared.

Meaning

'Mighty Dundubhi assuming the form of a frightening buffalo with pointed horns looking like a huge, dark raincloud in the sky in monsoon marched to the entrance of Kishkinda and roared like a wardrum as if shaking the earth.

KK-11-27Kishkindha Kanda 11.27

समीपस्थान्द्रुमान्भञ्जन्वसुधां दारयन्खुरैः। विषाणेनोल्लिखन् दर्पात्तद्द्वारं द्विरदो यथा4.11.27।।

samīpasthāndrumānbhañjanvasudhāṃ dārayankhuraiḥ| viṣāṇenollikhan darpāttaddvārṃ dvirado yathā4.11.27||

Translation

समीपस्थान् nearby, द्रुमान् trees, भञ्जन् felling, वसुधाम् earth, खुरैः with hoofs, दारयन् breaking, दर्पात् arrogantly, विषाणेन by the horn, तद्वारम् that entrance, द्विरदो यथा like an elephant, उल्लिखन् digging.

Meaning

'Dundubhi felled the trees nearby, rent the earth with its hoofs, scratched the entrance gate of the city as an elephant would do with its horns in arrogance.

KK-11-28Kishkindha Kanda 11.28

अन्तःपुरगतो वाली श्रुत्वा शब्दममर्षणः। निष्पपात सह स्त्रीभिस्ताराभिरिव चन्द्रमाः4.11.28।।

antḥpuragato vālī śrutvā śabdamamarṣaṇḥ| niṣpapāta saha strībhistārābhiriva candramāḥ4.11.28||

Translation

अन्तःपुरगतः in the harem, वाली Vali, शब्दम् sound, श्रुत्वा hearing, अमर्षणः intolereable, ताराभिः stars also, चन्द्रमाः Moon, स्त्रीभिः with women, निष्पपात jumped out.

Meaning

'Unable to tolerate the sound, Vali jumped out of the harem along with the women like the Moon with stars.

KK-11-29Kishkindha Kanda 11.29

मितं व्यक्ताक्षरपदं तमुवाचाथ दुन्दुभिम्। हरीणामीश्वरो वाली सर्वेषां वनचारिणाम्4.11.29।।

mitṃ vyaktākṣarapadṃ tamuvācātha dundubhim| harīṇāmīśvaro vālī sarveṣāṃ vanacāriṇām4.11.29||

Translation

वनचारिणाम् forestrangers, सर्वेषाम् for all, हरीणाम् of monkeys, ईश्वरः king, (सः वाली that Vali), दुन्दुभिम् to Dundubhi, व्यक्ताक्षरपदम् a brief statement, मितम् in limited words, उवाच said.

Meaning

'Vali, king of the monkeys who roam the forest, saw Dundubhi and addressed, but briefly:

KK-11-30Kishkindha Kanda 11.30

किमर्थं नगरद्वारमिदं रुध्द्वा विनर्दसि। दुन्दुभे विदितो मेऽसि रक्षप्राणान्महाबल4.11.30।।

kimarthṃ nagaradvāramidṃ rudhdvā vinardasi| dundubhe vidito me'si rakṣaprāṇānmahābala4.11.30||

Translation

दुन्दुभे O Dundubhi, इदम् this, नगरद्वारम् entrance of the city, रुध्द्वा blocking, किमर्थम् for what reason, विनर्दसि are you roaring, मे to me, विदितः known, असि you are,महाबल O powerful one, प्राणान् life, रक्ष you may protect.

Meaning

'O Dundubhi why are you roaring, blocking the entrance of the city? I know you are powerful. Go and save your life.'

KK-11-31Kishkindha Kanda 11.31

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वानरेन्द्रस्य धीमतः। उवाच दुन्दुभिर्वाक्यं रोषात्संरक्तलोचनः4.11.31।।

tasya tadvacanṃ śrutvā vānarendrasya dhīmatḥ| uvāca dundubhirvākyṃ roṣātsṃraktalocanḥ4.11.31||

Translation

धीमतः wise, तस्य his, वानरेन्द्रस्य of the king of monkeys, तत् that, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा hearing, दुन्दुभिः Dundubhi, रोषात् angrily, संरक्तलोचनः eyes turned red, वाक्यम् words, उवाच said

Meaning

'Dundubhi whose eyes turned red in anger when he heard the words of Vali ,the wise king of the monkeys, said:

KK-11-32Kishkindha Kanda 11.32

न त्वं स्त्रीसन्निधौ वीर वचनं वक्तुमर्हसि। मम युद्धं प्रयच्छाद्य ततो ज्ञास्यामि ते बलम्4.11.32।।

na tvṃ strīsannidhau vīra vacanṃ vaktumarhasi| mama yuddhṃ prayacchādya tato jñāsyāmi te balam4.11.32||

Translation

वीर hero, त्वम् you, स्त्रीसन्निधौ in the presence of women, वचनम् words, वक्तुम् to speak, नार्हसि not proper for you, अद्य to day, मम to me, युद्धम् war, प्रयच्छ you may give, ततः then, ते your, बलम् strength, ज्ञास्यामि I will let you know.

Meaning

'O hero speaking such words in the presence of women is not proper. Come to me for a combat and I will let you know your strength.

KK-11-33Kishkindha Kanda 11.33

अथवा धारयिष्यामि क्रोधमद्य निशामिमाम्। गृह्यतामुदयस्स्वैरं कामभोगेषु वानर4.11.33।।

athavā dhārayiṣyāmi krodhamadya niśāmimām| gṛhyatāmudayassvairṃ kāmabhogeṣu vānara4.11.33||

Translation

वानर O monkey, अथवा or else, अद्य now, इमाम् this, निशाम् night, क्रोधम् anger, धारयिष्यामि I will control, स्वैरम् freedom, कामभोगेषु for your sensual pleasures, उदयः morning, गृह्यताम् I will give you time.

Meaning

'O monkey I will restrain my anger tonight and give you time for your indulgence in sensual pleasures till morning.

KK-11-34Kishkindha Kanda 11.34

दीयतां सम्प्रदानं च परिष्वज्य च वानरान्। सर्वशाखामृगेन्द्र स्त्वं संसादय सुहृज्जनान्4.11.34।।

dīyatāṃ sampradānṃ ca pariṣvajya ca vānarān| sarvaśākhāmṛgendra stvṃ sṃsādaya suhṛjjanān4.11.34||

Translation

वानरान् of monkeys, परिष्वज्य embracing, सम्प्रदानम् a gift, दीयताम् may give, सर्वशाखामृगेन्द्रः king of all monkeys, त्वम् you, सुहृज्जनम् with dear friends, संसादय spend

Meaning

'O king of monkeys, hug them and give them any gift you want. Spend the night with your dear ones.

KK-11-35Kishkindha Kanda 11.35

सुदृष्टां कुरु किष्किन्धां कुरुष्वात्मसमं पुरे। क्रीडस्व च सह स्त्रीभिरहं ते दर्पनाशनः4.11.35।।

sudṛṣṭāṃ kuru kiṣkindhāṃ kuruṣvātmasamṃ pure| krīḍasva ca saha strībhirahṃ te darpanāśanḥ4.11.35||

Translation

किष्किन्धाम् Kishkindha, सुदृष्टाम् give a good look, पुरे the city, आत्मसमम् some one equal to you, कुरुष्व assign kingship, स्त्रीभिः with women, सह along with, क्रीडस्व च and sport, अहम् am, ते to you, दर्पनाशनः a destroyer of arrogance.

Meaning

'Have a good look a Kishkinda. Assign some one like you kingship. Sport freely with women and come, I shall destroy your arrogance.

KK-11-36Kishkindha Kanda 11.36

यो हि मत्तं प्रमत्तं वा सुप्तं वा रहितं भृशम्। हन्यात्स भ्रूणहा लोके त्वद्विधं मदमोहितम्4.11.36।।

yo hi mattṃ pramattṃ vā suptṃ vā rahitṃ bhṛśam| hanyātsa bhrūṇahā loke tvadvidhṃ madamohitam4.11.36||

Translation

यः whoever, मत्तम् drunk, प्रमत्तं वा or heedless, सुप्तं वा or sleeping, रहितम् or without weapons, भृशम् greatly, मदमोहितम् stupified by lust, हन्यात् if killed, सः he, लोके in the world, भ्रूणहा हि is a killer of foetus in the womb.

Meaning

'Whoever kills a person, who is drunk or is heedless or is asleep or without weapons or stupified by lust in this world, is equal to a killer of a foetus in the womb.'

KK-11-37Kishkindha Kanda 11.37

स प्रहस्याब्रवीन्मन्दं क्रोधात्तमसुरोत्तमम्। विसृज्य ताः स्त्रियस्सर्वास्ताराप्रभृतिकास्तदा4.11.37।।

sa prahasyābravīnmandṃ krodhāttamasurottamam| visṛjya tāḥ striyassarvāstārāprabhṛtikāstadā4.11.37||

Translation

तदा then, सः he, प्रहस्य laughing, ताराप्रभृतिकाः Tara and others, ताः those, सर्वाः all, स्त्रियः women, विसृज्य having sent away, मन्दम् slowly, तम् him, असुरोत्तमम् best of demons, क्रोधात् angrily, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

'Then, Vali sent away Tara and all other women slowly and replied angrily to the foolish demon with a mischievous smile:

KK-11-38Kishkindha Kanda 11.38

मत्तोऽयमिति मा मंस्था यद्यभीतोऽसि संयुगे। मदोऽयं सम्प्रहारेऽस्मिन्वीरपानं समर्थ्यताम्4.11.38।।

matto'yamiti mā mṃsthā yadyabhīto'si sṃyuge| mado'yṃ samprahāre'sminvīrapānṃ samarthyatām4.11.38||

Translation

अयम् this, मत्तः a drunken person, इति thus, मा मंस्थाः do not think, संयुगे in the combat, अभीतः not afraid, असि यदि if you are, अयम् this, मदः drunkeness, अस्मिन् सम्प्रहारे in striking you, वीरपानम् warrior's drink (sharpening a warrior's skill), समर्थ्यताम् consider.

Meaning

'Do not consider me drunken. This drink will serve as a warrior's drink in the combat. Be ready, if you are not afraid of a combat.'

KK-11-39Kishkindha Kanda 11.39

तमेवमुक्त्वा सङ्कृद्धो मालामुत्क्षिप्य काञ्चनीम्। पित्रा दत्तां महेन्द्रेण युद्धाय व्यवतिष्ठत4.11.39।।

tamevamuktvā saṅkṛddho mālāmutkṣipya kāñcanīm| pitrā dattāṃ mahendreṇa yuddhāya vyavatiṣṭhata4.11.39||

Translation

तम् him, एवम् that way, उक्त्वा having spoken, सङ्कृद्धः angry, पित्रा by his father, महेन्द्रेण by Indra, दत्ताम् gifted, काञ्चनीम् golden, मालाम् garland, उत्क्षिप्य removed, युद्धाय for the combat, व्यवतिष्ठत stood ready

Meaning

'Having addressed thus in a rage, Vali removed the golden garland gifted by Indra, his father, and stood ready for the combat.

KK-11-40Kishkindha Kanda 11.40

विषाणयोर्गृहीत्वा तं दुन्दुभिं गिरिसन्निभम्। आविध्यत तदा वाली विनदन्कपिकुञ्जरः4.11.40।।

viṣāṇayorgṛhītvā tṃ dundubhiṃ girisannibham| āvidhyata tadā vālī vinadankapikuñjarḥ4.11.40||

Translation

तदा then, कपिकुञ्जरः elephantlike monkey, वाली Vali, गिरिसन्निभम् resembling a mountain, तम् him, दुन्दुभिम् Dundubhi, विषाणयोः by horns, गृहीत्वा held, विनदन् roaring loudly, आविध्यत struck down.

Meaning

'Vali, the elephantlike monkey then held the mountainlike Dundubhi by the horns and struck him down, roaring loudly.

KK-11-41Kishkindha Kanda 11.41

वाली व्यापातयाञ्चक्रे ननर्द च महास्वनम्। श्रोत्राभ्यामथ रक्तं तु तस्य सुस्राव पात्यतः4.11.41।।

vālī vyāpātayāñcakre nanarda ca mahāsvanam| śrotrābhyāmatha raktṃ tu tasya susrāva pātyatḥ4.11.41||

Translation

वाली Vali, व्यापादयाञ्चक्रे whirled round, महास्वनम् great sound, ननर्द च roared, अथ then, पात्यतः down, तस्य his, श्रोत्राभ्याम् from the ears, रक्तम् blood, सुस्राव flowed.

Meaning

'Vali whirled him round and round and threw him downroaring. Blood flowed from Dundubhi's ears.

KK-11-42Kishkindha Kanda 11.42

तयोस्तु क्रोधसंरम्भात्परस्परजयैषिणोः। युद्धं समभवद्घोरं दुन्दुभेर्वानरस्यच4.11.42।।

tayostu krodhasṃrambhātparasparajayaiṣiṇoḥ| yuddhṃ samabhavadghorṃ dundubhervānarasyaca4.11.42||

Translation

क्रोधसंरम्भात् highly agitated in anger, परस्परजयैषिणोः of both trying to win over the other, तयोः of both, दुन्दुभेः for Dundubhi, वानरस्य च and of the monkey, घोरम् terrific, युद्धम् combat, समभवत् took place.

Meaning

'Each one of them was highly agitated and angry trying to win over the other. A terrific fight took place between Dundubhi and Vali.

KK-11-43Kishkindha Kanda 11.43

अयुद्ध्यत तदा वाली शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः। मुष्टिभिर्जानुभिश्चैव शिलाभिः पादपैस्तथा4.11.43।।

ayuddhyata tadā vālī śakratulyaparākramḥ| muṣṭibhirjānubhiścaiva śilābhiḥ pādapaistathā4.11.43||

Translation

तदा then, शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः equal to Indra in prowess, वाली Vali, मुष्टिभिः with fists, जानुभिः with knees, च एव also, शिलाभिः with rocks, तथा so also, पादपैः with trees, अयुध्यत fought.

Meaning

'Then Vali who was equal to Indra in prowess fought, hitting him with fists, knees, rocks and trees.

KK-11-44Kishkindha Kanda 11.44

परस्परं घ्नतो स्तत्र वानरासुरयोस्तदा। आसीदसुरो युद्धे शक्रसूनुर्व्यवर्धत4.11.44।।

parasparṃ ghnato statra vānarāsurayostadā| āsīdasuro yuddhe śakrasūnurvyavardhata4.11.44||

Translation

तदा then, तत्र there, वानरासुरयोः of monkey and demon, परस्परम् one to one, घ्नतोः pouncing on the other, युद्धे in fight, असुरः demon, हीनः reduced, आसीद become, शक्रसूनुः son of Indra, व्यवर्धत grew (in strength and spirit).

Meaning

'Then as the monkey and demon fought pouncing on each other, the prowess of Dundubhi got diminished and that of Vali, the son of Indra, increased.

KK-11-45-46Kishkindha Kanda 11.45–46 (युग्मम्)

व्यापारवीर्यधैर्यैश्च परिक्षीणं पराक्रमैः। तं तु दुन्दुभिमुद्यम्य धरण्यामभ्यपातयत्।।4.11.45।। युद्धे प्राणहरे तस्मिन्निष्पिष्टो दुन्दुभिस्तदा। पपात च महाकायः क्षितौ पञ्चत्वमागतः4.11.46।।

vyāpāravīryadhairyaiśca parikṣīṇṃ parākramaiḥ| tṃ tu dundubhimudyamya dharaṇyāmabhyapātayat||4.11.45|| yuddhe prāṇahare tasminniṣpiṣṭo dundubhistadā| papāta ca mahākāyḥ kṣitau pañcatvamāgatḥ4.11.46||

Translation

व्यापारवीर्यधैर्यै in effort, strength and courage, पराक्रमैः in prowess as well, परिक्षीणं deterioration, तम् Vali, दुन्दुभिम् Dundubhi, उद्यम्य having lifted, धरण्याम् on the ground, अभ्यपातयत् hit down, तदा then, प्राणहरे in the deadly, तस्मिन् in that, युद्धे fight, दुन्दुभिः Dundubhi, निष्पिष्ट: crushed, पातयतः thrown down, तस्य his, महाकायः of huge body, पञ्चत्वम् resolved into the five elements (dead), आगतः go, क्षितौ on the ground, पपात fell down.

Meaning

In the fight, Dundubhi fell down, with his strength, courage and prowess dwindled. Vali lifted his huge body and dashed it down on the ground. The body of Dundubhi dissolved into the five elements.

KK-11-47Kishkindha Kanda 11.47

तं तोलयित्वा बाहुभ्यां गतसत्त्वमचेतनम्। चिक्षेप बलवान्वाली वेगेनैकेन योजनम्4.11.47।।

tṃ tolayitvā bāhubhyāṃ gatasattvamacetanam| cikṣepa balavānvālī vegenaikena yojanam4.11.47||

Translation

बलवान् powerful, वाली Vali, गतसत्त्वम् life drained, अचेतनम् lost consciousness, तम् him, बाहुभ्याम् with both shoulders, तोलयित्वा after lifting, एकेन in one piece, वेगेन with speed, योजनम् distance of a yojana (eight miles), चिक्षेप hurled.

Meaning

'Mighty Vali lifted on both shoulders the insensate body drained of life and hurled it speedily to a distance of a yojana.

KK-11-48Kishkindha Kanda 11.48

तस्य वेगप्रविद्धस्य वक्त्रात्क्षतजबिन्दवः। प्रपेतुर्मारुतोत्क्षिप्ता मतङ्गप्याश्रमं प्रति4.11.48।।

tasya vegapraviddhasya vaktrātkṣatajabindavḥ| prapeturmārutotkṣiptā mataṅgapyāśramṃ prati4.11.48||

Translation

वेगप्रविद्धस्य flung, तस्य his, वक्त्रात् from the mouth, क्षतजबिन्दवः drops of blood, मारुतोत्क्षिप्ताः scattered by the wind, मतङ्गस्य Matanga's, आश्रमं प्रति at the hermitage of, प्रपेतुः fell.

Meaning

'Scattered by the wind, drops of blood fell at the hermitage of Matanga from the mouth of the deadbody flung.

KK-11-49Kishkindha Kanda 11.49

तान्दृष्ट्वा पतितांस्तस्य मुनिश्शोणितविप्रुषः। क्रुद्धस्तत्र महाभागश्चिन्तयामास कोन्वयम्4.11.49।।

tāndṛṣṭvā patitāṃstasya muniśśoṇitavipruṣḥ| kruddhastatra mahābhāgaścintayāmāsa konvayam4.11.49||

Translation

महाभागः venerable one, मुनिः sage, तत्र there, पतितान् fallen, शोणितविप्रुषः drops of blood, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, तस्य his, क्रुद्धः became angry, अयम् this, को नु who can he be, चिन्तयामास started thinking.

Meaning

'The venerable sage became furious to see drops of blood fallen there. He started thinking who could he be?

KK-11-50Kishkindha Kanda 11.50

येनाहं सहसा स्पृष्टश्शोणितेन दुरात्मना। कोऽयं दुरात्मा दुर्भुदि्घरकृतात्मा च बालिशः4.11.50।।

yenāhṃ sahasā spṛṣṭaśśoṇitena durātmanā| ko'yṃ durātmā durbhudigharakṛtātmā ca bāliśḥ4.11.50||

Translation

दुरात्मना wicked self, येन by whom, अहम् I, सहसा instantly, शोणितेन with blood, स्पृष्टः touched, दुरात्मा a villain, दुर्भुद्धि: evilminded, अयम् he, बालिशः a petty man, कः who?

Meaning

'Who is that petty, wicked, evil minded one who caused the drops of blood to touch (fall on) me suddenly?

KK-11-51Kishkindha Kanda 11.51

इत्युक्त्वाऽथ विनिष्क्रम्य ददर्श मुनिसत्तमः। महिषं पर्वताकारं गतासुं पतितं भुवि4.11.51।।

ityuktvā'tha viniṣkramya dadarśa munisattamḥ| mahiṣṃ parvatākārṃ gatāsuṃ patitṃ bhuvi4.11.51||

Translation

सः he, मुनिसत्तमः venerable sage, इति thus, उक्त्वा having said, विनिष्क्रम्य having come out, गतासुम् a dead one, भुवि on the floor, पतितम् fallen, पर्वताकारम् with a mountaneous form, महिषम् buffalo, ददृशे saw.

Meaning

'The venerable sage came out of the hermitage and saw a mountaneous buffalo fallen dead on the floor.

KK-11-52Kishkindha Kanda 11.52

स तु विज्ञाय तपसा वानरेण कृतं हि तत्। उत्ससर्ज महाशापं क्षेप्तारं वालिनं प्रति4.11.52।।

sa tu vijñāya tapasā vānareṇa kṛtṃ hi tat| utsasarja mahāśāpṃ kṣeptārṃ vālinṃ prati4.11.52||

Translation

सः he, तत् that, वानरेण by the monkey, कृतम् done, तपसा by ascetic vision, विज्ञाय having known, क्षेप्तारम् who hurled, वालिनं प्रति at that Vali, महाशापम् great curse, उत्ससर्ज pronounced.

Meaning

'Having known through his ascetic vision that it was the act of a monkey, he pronounced a curse on Vali who had hurled (the body):

KK-11-53Kishkindha Kanda 11.53

इह तेनाप्रवेष्टव्यं प्रविष्टस्य वधो भवेत्। वनं मत्संश्रयं येन दूषितं रुधिरस्रवैः4.11.53।।

iha tenāpraveṣṭavyṃ praviṣṭasya vadho bhavet| vanṃ matsṃśrayṃ yena dūṣitṃ rudhirasravaiḥ4.11.53||

Translation

मत्संश्रयम् under my protection, वनम् forest, येन by whom, रुधिरस्रवैः with drops of blood, दूषितम् is violated, तेन by him, इह here, न प्रवेष्टव्यम् should not enter, प्रविष्टस्य of him who enters, वधः death, भवेत् will take place.

Meaning

'Whoever has desecrated this forest, protected by me, with drops of blood is forbidden to enter this place. Once he does it, he will die.

KK-11-54Kishkindha Kanda 11.54

सम्भग्नाः पादपाश्चैमेक्षिपतेहासुरीं तनुम्। समन्तादाद्योजनं पूर्णमाश्रमं मामकं यदि4.11.54।। आगमिष्यति दुर्बुद्धिर्व्यक्तं स न भविष्यति।

sambhagnāḥ pādapāścaimekṣipatehāsurīṃ tanum| samantādādyojanṃ pūrṇamāśramṃ māmakṃ yadi4.11.54|| āgamiṣyati durbuddhirvyaktṃ sa na bhaviṣyati|

Translation

आसुरीम् demon's, तनुम् body, क्षिपता hurled, इमे those, पादपाश्च trees also, सम्भग्नाः are broken, समन्तात् all over, पूर्णम् entire, योजनम् yojana, मामकम् mine, आश्रमम् hermitage, आगमिष्यति if he comes, दुर्बुद्धिः wicked one, सः he, न भविष्यति will not survive.

Meaning

'Whoever has broken the trees all over this forest and has thrown the demon's body will not survive if he enters within a radius of one yojana of my hermitage.

KK-11-55Kishkindha Kanda 11.55

ये चापि सचिवाः स्तस्य संश्रिता मामकं वनम्4.11.55।। न च तैरिह वस्तव्यं श्रुत्वा यान्तु यथासुखम्।

ye cāpi sacivāḥ stasya sṃśritā māmakṃ vanam4.11.55|| na ca tairiha vastavyṃ śrutvā yāntu yathāsukham|

Translation

मामकम् my, वनम् forest, संश्रिताः taking refuge, ये (केचित्) indeed, अस्य सचिवाः his counsellors, तैः च by them also, इह here, न वस्तव्यम् should not stay, श्रुत्वा on hearing, यथासुखम् safely, यान्तु depart.

Meaning

'Indeed his counsellors who are here must leave this forest. Let them depart safely.

KK-11-56-57Kishkindha Kanda 11.56–57 (युग्मम्)

यदि तेऽपी ह तिष्ठन्ति शपिष्ये तानपि ध्रुवम्4.11.56।। वनेऽस्मिन्मामके नित्यं पुत्रवत्परिरक्षिते। पत्राङ्कुरविनाशाय फलमूलाभवाय च4.11.57।।

yadi te'pī ha tiṣṭhanti śapiṣye tānapi dhruvam4.11.56|| vane'sminmāmake nityṃ putravatparirakṣite| patrāṅkuravināśāya phalamūlābhavāya ca4.11.57||

Translation

नित्यम् always, पुत्रवत् like a son, परिरक्षिते protected, मामके my, अस्मिन् वने in this forest, तेऽपि they also, पत्राङ्कुरविनाशाय for destroying shoots, फलमूलाभवाय च and for the loss of fruits and roots etc, तिष्ठन्ति यदि if they stay back, तानपि them also, ध्रुवम् certainly, शपिष्ये I will curse.

Meaning

'If the monkeys stay back to destroy the leaves and shoots and plunder the fruits and roots of this forest which I have protected just like my son will also certainly invite my curse.

KK-11-58Kishkindha Kanda 11.58

दिवसश्चास्य मर्यादा यं द्रष्टा श्वोऽस्मि वानरम्। बहुवर्षसहस्राणि स वै शैलो भविष्यति4.11.58।।

divasaścāsya maryādā yṃ draṣṭā śvo'smi vānaram| bahuvarṣasahasrāṇi sa vai śailo bhaviṣyati4.11.58||

Translation

अस्य for him, दिवसः one day, मर्यादा time limit, श्वः tomorrow, यम् whosoever, वानरम् monkey, द्रष्टास्मि I will see, सः he, बहुवर्षसहस्राणि for many thousands of years, शैलः mountain, भविष्यति will become.

Meaning

'I give one day's time for the monkeys (to leave). Whomsoever, I see tomorrow will get transformed into a mountain for many thousands of years'

KK-11-59Kishkindha Kanda 11.59

ततस्ते वानराश्श्रुत्वा गिरं मुनिसमीरिताम्। निश्चक्रमुर्वनात्तस्मात्तान्दृष्ट्वा वालिरब्रवीत्4.11.59।।

tataste vānarāśśrutvā girṃ munisamīritām| niścakramurvanāttasmāttāndṛṣṭvā vālirabravīt4.11.59||

Translation

ततः then, ते those, वानराः monkeys, मुनिसमीरिताम् spoken by the sage, गिरम् word, श्रुत्वा after hearing, तस्मात् वनात् from that forest, निश्चक्रमुः went away, तान् the, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, वालिः Vali, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

'The monkeys fled on hearing the words spoken by the sage. Said Vali:

KK-11-60Kishkindha Kanda 11.60

किं भवन्तस्समस्ताश्च मतङ्गवनवासिनः। मत्समीपमनुप्राप्ता अपि स्वस्ति वनौकसाम्4.11.60।।

kiṃ bhavantassamastāśca mataṅgavanavāsinḥ| matsamīpamanuprāptā api svasti vanaukasām4.11.60||

Translation

मतङ्गवनवासिनः residents of the groves of Matanga, भवन्तः you, समस्ताः all, किम् why, मत्समीपम् to me, अनुप्राप्ताः came here, वनौकसाम् for all the monkeys, अपि स्वस्ति hope all are safe.

Meaning

'Why have you, residents of the groves of Matanga, come to me? Hope all are safe'

KK-11-61Kishkindha Kanda 11.61

ततस्ते कारणं सर्वं तदा शापं च वालिनः। शशंसुर्वानरास्सर्वे वालिने हेममालिने4.11.61।।

tataste kāraṇṃ sarvṃ tadā śāpṃ ca vālinḥ| śaśṃsurvānarāssarve vāline hemamāline4.11.61||

Translation

ततः then, सर्वे all, ते वानराः those monkeys, सर्वम् everything, कारणम् reason, तदा then, वालिनः of Vali, शापं च curse also, हेममालिने to him wearing golden necklace, वालिने to Vali, शशंसुः narrated.

Meaning

'Then all the monkeys collected together and narrated everything about the curse given to Vali , adorned with a golden chain(on his neck).

KK-11-62Kishkindha Kanda 11.62

एतच्छ्रुत्वा तदा वाली वचनं वानरेरितम्। स महर्षिंतदाऽसाद्य याचते स्म कृताञ्जलिः4.11.62।।

etacchrutvā tadā vālī vacanṃ vānareritam| sa maharṣiṃtadā'sādya yācate sma kṛtāñjaliḥ4.11.62||

Translation

तदा then, सः वाली that Vali, वानरेरितम् spoken by monkeys, एतत् all that, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, कृताञ्जलिः with folded hands, महर्षिम् to the sage, (सम्) आसाद्य having approached, याचते स्म begged.

Meaning

'On hearing the monkeys, Vali went to the sage and begged forgiveness with folded hands.

KK-11-63Kishkindha Kanda 11.63

महर्षिस्तमनादृत्य प्रविवेशाश्रमं तदा। शापधारणभीतस्तु वाली विह्वलतां गतः4.11.63।।

maharṣistamanādṛtya praviveśāśramṃ tadā| śāpadhāraṇabhītastu vālī vihvalatāṃ gatḥ4.11.63||

Translation

महर्षिः great sage, तम् him, अनादृत्य without obliging, आश्रमं to the hermitage, तदा then, प्रविवेश entered, वाली Vali, शापधारणभीतः with the fear of hearing the curse, विह्वलताम् agrieved, गतः became.

Meaning

'The sage went into the hermitage without obliging Vali who became apprehensive of the curse of the sage.

KK-11-64Kishkindha Kanda 11.64

ततश्शापभयाद्भीत ऋश्यमूकं महागिरिम्। प्रवेष्टुं नेच्छति हरिर्द्रष्टुं वापि नरेश्वर4.11.64।।

tataśśāpabhayādbhīta ṛśyamūkṃ mahāgirim| praveṣṭuṃ necchati harirdraṣṭuṃ vāpi nareśvara4.11.64||

Translation

नरेश्वर O Lord Rama, ततः then onwards, हरिः monkeys, शापभयात् for fear of the curse, भीतः frightened, महागिरिम् great mountain, ऋष्यमूकम् Rishyamuka, प्रवेष्टुम् to enter, द्रष्टुं वापि even to see, नेच्छति does not like.

Meaning

'O Lord Rama because of the fear of the curse, Vali will not enter the great Rishyamuka mountain nor will he like to see it.

KK-11-65Kishkindha Kanda 11.65

तस्याप्रवेशं ज्ञात्वाऽहमिदं राम महावनम्। विचरामि सहामात्यो विषादेन विवर्जितः4.11.65।।

tasyāpraveśṃ jñātvā'hamidṃ rāma mahāvanam| vicarāmi sahāmātyo viṣādena vivarjitḥ4.11.65||

Translation

राम O Rama, अहम् I, तस्य his, अप्रवेशम् entry prohibited, ज्ञात्वा after knowing, विषादेन apprehension, विवर्जितः without, सहामात्यः accompanied by ministers, इदम् this, महावनम् great forest, विचरामि I am roaming about.

Meaning

'O Rama aware of the prohibition of Vali from entering the place, I roam about this great forest accompanied by my ministers without any apprehension.

KK-11-66Kishkindha Kanda 11.66

एषोऽस्थिनिचयस्तस्य दुन्दुभेस्सम्प्रकाशते। वीर्योत्सेकान्निरस्तस्य गिरिकूटोपमो महान्4.11.66।।

eṣo'sthinicayastasya dundubhessamprakāśate| vīryotsekānnirastasya girikūṭopamo mahān4.11.66||

Translation

वीर्योत्सेकात् with pride of prowess, निरस्तस्य thrown away, तस्य दुन्दुभेः Dundubhi's, गिरिकूटोपमो as the mountain peak, महान् huge, एषः this, अस्थिनिचयः heap of bones, सम्प्रकाशते is shining

Meaning

'Hurled with the pride of his(Vali's) prowess is this heap of bones of Dundubhi here, which shines like a huge mountain peak.

KK-11-67Kishkindha Kanda 11.67

इमे च विपुलास्सालास्सप्त शाखावलम्बिनः। यत्रैकं घटते वाली निष्पत्रयितुमोजसा4.11.67।।

ime ca vipulāssālāssapta śākhāvalambinḥ| yatraikṃ ghaṭate vālī niṣpatrayitumojasā4.11.67||

Translation

शाखावलम्बिनः branches overlapping one another, इमे these, सप्त seven, विपुलाः sturdy, सालाः Sala trees, यत्र there, एकम् one, वाली Vali, ओजसा his own, निष्पत्रयितुम् to remove its leaves, घटते he is competent.

Meaning

'Look at these seven sturdy Sala trees with branches of one overlapping the other. Vali was able to remove all the leaves of one Sala tree with just one arrow.

KK-11-68Kishkindha Kanda 11.68

एतदस्यासमं वीर्यं मया राम प्रकीर्तितम्। कथं तं वालिनं हन्तुं समरे शक्ष्यसे नृप4.11.68।।

etadasyāsamṃ vīryṃ mayā rāma prakīrtitam| kathṃ tṃ vālinṃ hantuṃ samare śakṣyase nṛpa4.11.68||

Translation

राम O Rama, अस्य his, असमम् unequalled, एतत् this, वीर्यम् strength, प्रकीर्तितम् is narrated, नृप king, समरे in a combat, तं वालिनम् that Vali's, हन्तुम् to kill, कथम् how is it, शक्ष्यसे it is possible for you?

Meaning

'O Rama Vali's strength and fame related by me is unequalled. O king how is it possible for you to kill him in a combat?'

KK-11-69Kishkindha Kanda 11.69

तथा ब्रुवाणं सुग्रीवं प्रहसन् लक्ष्मणोऽब्रवीत्। कस्मिन्कर्मणि निर्वृत्ते श्रद्दध्या वालिनो वधम्4.11.69।।

tathā bruvāṇṃ sugrīvṃ prahasan lakṣmaṇo'bravīt| kasminkarmaṇi nirvṛtte śraddadhyā vālino vadham4.11.69||

Translation

लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, तथा that way, ब्रुवाणम् while he spoke, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, प्रहसन् with a smile, अब्रवीत् said, कस्मिन् in which, कर्मणि in action, निवृत्ते when carried out, वालिनः Vali's, वधम् killing, श्रद्दध्याः trust

Meaning

Smiling, Lakshmana asked Sugriva, 'By what action will you trust?. By the fulfilment of which task (by Rama) will you have faith?'

KK-11-70Kishkindha Kanda 11.70

तमुवाचाथ सुग्रीवस्सप्त सालानिमान्पुरा। एवमेकैकशो वाली विव्याथाथ स चासकृत्। 4.11.70।।

tamuvācātha sugrīvassapta sālānimānpurā| evamekaikaśo vālī vivyāthātha sa cāsakṛt| 4.11.70||

Translation

अथ then, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, तम् him, उवाच said, पुरा earlier, सः वाली that Vali, इमान् these, सप्तसालान् seven sala trees, एवम् in this way, एकैकशः one after the other, अथ then, असकृत् several times, विव्याध struck.

Meaning

Then Sugriva told Lakshmana that earlier Vali had split through these seven Sala trees one after the other, several times.

KK-11-71Kishkindha Kanda 11.71

रामोऽपिदारयेदेषां बाणेनैकेन च द्रुमम्। वालिनं निहतं मन्ये दृष्ट्वा रामस्य विक्रमम्4.11.71।।

rāmo'pidārayedeṣāṃ bāṇenaikena ca drumam| vālinṃ nihatṃ manye dṛṣṭvā rāmasya vikramam4.11.71||

Translation

रामः Rama, अपि also, एषाम् these, द्रुमम् trees, एकेन with one, बाणेन with arrow, दारयेत् pierce through(split), रामस्य Rama's, विक्रमम् prowess, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, वालिनम् Vali, निहतम् killing, मन्ये I think, अपि also.

Meaning

'If I see Rama splitting these trees with one arrow, I will believe he can kill Vali with his prowess.

KK-11-72Kishkindha Kanda 11.72

हतस्य महिषस्यास्थि पादेनैकेन लक्ष्मण। उद्यम्याथ प्रक्षिपेच्चेत्तरसा द्वे धनुश्शते4.11.72।।

hatasya mahiṣasyāsthi pādenaikena lakṣmaṇa| udyamyātha prakṣipeccettarasā dve dhanuśśate4.11.72||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, हतस्य of the dead, महिषस्य buffalo's, अस्थि skeleton, एकेन by one, पादेन by the foot, उद्यम्य lifted, तरसा with his strength, द्वेधनुः शते a distance of eight hundred hands (distance of two hundred bows), प्रक्षिपेच्चापि if he can also hurl.

Meaning

'O Lakshmana and if Rama can also lift the dead buffalo's (Dundubhi's) skeleton and hurl it to a distance of two hundred bows with one of his feet.

KK-11-73Kishkindha Kanda 11.73

एवमुक्त्वा तु सुग्रीवो रामं रक्तान्तलोचनम्। ध्यात्वा मुहूर्तं काकुत्स्थं पुनरेव वचोऽब्रवीत्4.11.73।।

evamuktvā tu sugrīvo rāmṃ raktāntalocanam| dhyātvā muhūrtṃ kākutsthṃ punareva vaco'bravīt4.11.73||

Translation

सुग्रीवः Sugriva, रक्तान्तलोचनम् with reddened eyes, रामम् Rama, एवम् thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, मुहूर्तम् for a moment after, ध्यात्वा thinking, काकुत्स्थम् Rama, पुनरेव again, वचः these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Having said this and thinking for a moment, Sugriva again said to the heroic Rama whose eyes had turned red.

KK-11-74Kishkindha Kanda 11.74

शूरश्च शूरघाती च प्रख्यातबलपौरुषः। बलवान्वानरो वाली संयुगेष्वपराजितः4.11.74।।

śūraśca śūraghātī ca prakhyātabalapauruṣḥ| balavānvānaro vālī sṃyugeṣvaparājitḥ4.11.74||

Translation

शूरश्च hero, शूरघाती च killer of heroes, प्रख्यातबलपौरुषः wellknown for prowess and valour, बलवान् powerful, वानरः वाली monkey Vali, संयुगेषु in combat, अपराजितः unconquered.

Meaning

'Powerful Vali is valiant and has killed brave fighters. He is wellknown for his prowess and valour. He has not faced defeat in war.

KK-11-75Kishkindha Kanda 11.75

दृश्यन्ते चास्य कर्माणि दुष्कराणि सुरैरपि। यानि सञ्चिन्त्य भीतोऽहमृश्यमूकं समाश्रितः4.11.75।।

dṛśyante cāsya karmāṇi duṣkarāṇi surairapi| yāni sañcintya bhīto'hamṛśyamūkṃ samāśritḥ4.11.75||

Translation

सुरैरपि even by gods, दुष्कराणि difficult, तस्य his, कर्माणि tasks, दृश्यन्ते are seen(all over), यानि all those, सञ्चिन्त्य thinking of, भीतः fear, अहम् I, ऋष्यमूकम् at Rishyamuka, उपाश्रितः I have taken refuge.

Meaning

'Even gods cannot do what he has done. Thinking of all this and being afraid of him, I have taken refuge at Rishyamuka.

KK-11-76Kishkindha Kanda 11.76

तमजय्यमधृष्यं च वानरेन्द्रममर्षणम्। विचिन्तयन्न मुञ्चामि ऋश्यमूकमहन्विमम्4.11.76।।

tamajayyamadhṛṣyṃ ca vānarendramamarṣaṇam| vicintayanna muñcāmi ṛśyamūkamahanvimam4.11.76||

Translation

तम् him, वानरेन्द्रम् lord of monkeys, अजय्यम् invincible, अधृष्यम् one who can not be overpowered, अमर्षणम् indignant, विचिन्तयन् while thinking over, अहम् I, ऋष्यमूकम् Rishyamuka, न मुञ्चामि I have not left, इयम this.

Meaning

'Thinking that this indignant, invincible lord of the monkeys, cannot be overpowered, I have not stepped out of Rishyamuka.

KK-11-77Kishkindha Kanda 11.77

उद्विग्नश्शङ्कितश्चापि विचरामि महावने। अनुरक्तैः सहामात्यैर्हनुमत्प्रमुखैर्वरैः4.11.77।।

udvignaśśaṅkitaścāpi vicarāmi mahāvane| anuraktaiḥ sahāmātyairhanumatpramukhairvaraiḥ4.11.77||

Translation

(अहम् I), उद्विग्नः agitated, शङ्कितः frightened, अनुरक्तैः who are devoted to me, वरैः excellent, हनुमत्प्रमुखैः by Hanuman and others, अमात्यैः with ministers, सह along with, महावने in this great forest, विचरामि I am roaming.

KK-11-78Kishkindha Kanda 11.78

उपलब्धं च मे श्लाघ्यं सन्मित्रं मित्रवत्सल। त्वामहं पुरुषव्याघ्र हिमवन्तमिवाश्रितः4.11.78।।

upalabdhṃ ca me ślāghyṃ sanmitrṃ mitravatsala| tvāmahṃ puruṣavyāghra himavantamivāśritḥ4.11.78||

Translation

श्लाघ्यम् praiseworthy, सन्मित्रम् a good friend, मे to me, उपलब्धम् Is obtained, मित्रवत्सल O loyal to friends, पुरुषव्याघ्र tiger among men, अहम् I am, हिमवन्तमिव like the Himalaya, त्वाम् you, आश्रितः seek your protection.

Meaning

'I have discovered in you a faithful friend. O tiger among men, O venerable one, you are to me like the Himalayas.

KK-11-79Kishkindha Kanda 11.79

किं तु तस्य बलज्ञोऽहं दुर्भ्रातुर्बलशालिनः। अप्रत्यक्षं तु मे वीर्यं समरे तव राघव4.11.79।।

kiṃ tu tasya balajño'hṃ durbhrāturbalaśālinḥ| apratyakṣṃ tu me vīryṃ samare tava rāghava4.11.79||

Translation

किं तु but, अहम् I, बलशालिनः mighty, दुर्भ्रातुः bad brother's, तस्य his, बलज्ञः know his strength, राघव Rama, समरे in war, तव your, वीर्यं तु power also, मे I, अप्रत्यक्षम् not see.

Meaning

'What to do? I know the strength of my mighty bad brother. But so far I have not seen your power in a battle.

KK-11-80Kishkindha Kanda 11.80

न खल्वहं त्वां तुलये नावमन्ये न भीषये। कर्मभिस्तस्य भीमैस्तु कातर्यं जनितं मम4.11.80।।

na khalvahṃ tvāṃ tulaye nāvamanye na bhīṣaye| karmabhistasya bhīmaistu kātaryṃ janitṃ mama4.11.80||

Translation

अहम् I am, त्वाम् your, न खलु तुलये indeed do not compare, नावमन्ये I do not insult you, न भीषये not to scare , तस्य his, भीमैः by dreadful, कर्मभिः by his actions, मम in me, कातर्यम् cowardice, जनितम् is created.

Meaning

'The dreadful acts of Vali have made me feel timid. This is not to compare you with him or your strength with his or insult you and scare you.

KK-11-81Kishkindha Kanda 11.81

कामं राघव ते वाणी प्रमाणं धैर्यमाकृतिः। सूचयन्ति परं तेजो भस्मच्छन्नमिवानलम्4.11.81।।

kāmṃ rāghava te vāṇī pramāṇṃ dhairyamākṛtiḥ| sūcayanti parṃ tejo bhasmacchannamivānalam4.11.81||

Translation

राघव Rama, ते you, वाणी word, प्रमाणम् evidence, धैर्यम् courage, आकृतिः appearance, भस्मच्छन्नम् covered with ashes, आनलम् इव like fire, परम् supreme, तेजः strength, सूचयन्ति indicate, कामम् no doubt.

Meaning

'Rama your word and your courage indicate your supreme strength which is like fire covered with ashes.'

KK-11-82Kishkindha Kanda 11.82

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः। स्मितपूर्वमथो रामः प्रत्युवाच हरिं प्रभुः4.11.82।।

tasya tadvacanṃ śrutvā sugrīvasya mahātmanḥ| smitapūrvamatho rāmḥ pratyuvāca hariṃ prabhuḥ4.11.82||

Translation

रामः Rama, महात्मनः great soul, तस्य सुग्रीवस्य that Sugriva's, तत् वचनम् those words, श्रुत्वा having heard, अथ then, हरिं प्रति seeing Sugriva, स्मितपूर्वम् smiling gently, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Meaning

Having heard the great Sugriva, Rama replied with a gentle smile:

KK-11-83Kishkindha Kanda 11.83

यदि न प्रत्ययोऽस्मासु विक्रमे तव वानर। प्रत्ययं समरे श्लाघ्यमहमुत्पादयामि ते4.11.83।।

yadi na pratyayo'smāsu vikrame tava vānara| pratyayṃ samare ślāghyamahamutpādayāmi te4.11.83||

Translation

वानर monkey, विक्रमे in valour, अस्मासु in us, तव to you, प्रत्ययः faith, न यदि if not, अहम् I, समरे in combat, श्लाघ्यम् praiseworthy, प्रत्ययम् confidence, ते to you, उत्पादयामि create.

Meaning

'If you have no confidence in my strength in fight, O monkey, I will create it in you so much so that you will admire it.'

KK-11-84-85Kishkindha Kanda 11.84–85 (युग्मम्)

एवमुक्त्वा तु सुग्रीवं सान्त्वं लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः। राघवो दुन्दुभेः कायं पादाङ्गुष्ठेन लीलया4.11.84।। तोलयित्वा महाबाहुश्चिक्षेप दशयोजनम्। असुरस्य तनुं शुष्कं पादाङ्गुष्ठेन वीर्यवान्4.11.85।।

evamuktvā tu sugrīvṃ sāntvṃ lakṣmaṇapūrvajḥ| rāghavo dundubheḥ kāyṃ pādāṅguṣṭhena līlayā4.11.84|| tolayitvā mahābāhuścikṣepa daśayojanam| asurasya tanuṃ śuṣkṃ pādāṅguṣṭhena vīryavān4.11.85||

Translation

लक्ष्मणाग्रजः Lakshmana's elder brother, महाबाहुः longarmed one, वीर्यवान् mighty, राघवः Rama, एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having said, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, सान्त्वं In a pleasing way, दुन्दुभेः Dundubhi's, कायम् body, लीलया easily, पादाङ्गुष्ठेन with the toe, तोलयित्वा lifting, असुरस्य demon's, शुष्काम् dried, तनुम् body, दशयोजनम् ten yojanas, चिक्षेप flung

Meaning

Rama,the mighty elder brother of Lakshmana, having said so to Sugriva in a pleasing manner, lifted the dried body of Dundubhi easily with his toe, shook it and flung it with ease to a distance of ten yojanas.

KK-11-86Kishkindha Kanda 11.86

क्षिप्तं दृष्ट्वा ततः कायं सुग्रीवः पुनरब्रवीत्। लक्ष्मणस्याग्रतो राममिदं वचनमर्थवत्4.11.86।।

kṣiptṃ dṛṣṭvā tatḥ kāyṃ sugrīvḥ punarabravīt| lakṣmaṇasyāgrato rāmamidṃ vacanamarthavat4.11.86||

Translation

सुग्रीवः Sugriva, क्षिप्तम् the thrown, कायम् body, दृष्ट्वा seeing, ततः then, पुनः again, अब्रवीत् said, अर्थवत् meaningful, इदम् these, वचनम् words, अब्रवीत् said, लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, अग्रतः In the presence.

Meaning

Having seen Rama flinging the body, Sugriva said to him again in the presence of Lakshmanameaningfully:

KK-11-87-88Kishkindha Kanda 11.87–88 (युग्मम्)

आर्द्रस्समांसः प्रत्यग्रः क्षिप्तः कायः पुरा सखे4.11.87।। लघुस्सम्प्रति निर्मांस स्तृणभूतश्च राघव। परिश्रान्तेन मत्तेन भ्रात्रा मे वालिना तदा4.11.88।। क्षिप्तमेवं प्रहर्षेण भवता रघुनन्दन।

ārdrassamāṃsḥ pratyagrḥ kṣiptḥ kāyḥ purā sakhe4.11.87|| laghussamprati nirmāṃsa stṛṇabhūtaśca rāghava| pariśrāntena mattena bhrātrā me vālinā tadā4.11.88|| kṣiptamevṃ praharṣeṇa bhavatā raghunandana|

Translation

सखे friend, तदा that time, परिश्रान्तेन by the tired, मत्तेन by the intoxicated, मे भ्रात्रा by my brother, वालिना by Vali, पुरा earlier, आर्द्रः wet, समांसः with flesh, प्रत्यग्रः fresh, कायः body, क्षिप्तः flung, रघुनन्दन O delight of the Raghu race, राघव Raghava, सम्प्रति now, लघुः light, निर्मांसः without flesh, तृणभूतश्च like a bunch of grass, प्रहर्षेण playfully, भवता by you, एवम् this, क्षिप्तम् flung.

Meaning

'O friend, when Vali my brother flung the body, he was tired and intoxicated and the body was fresh with flesh (meaning heavy), but now, O Delight of the Raghu race, it is fleshless and light like a bunch of (dry) grass (for) which you could throw it playfully.

KK-11-89Kishkindha Kanda 11.89

नात्र शक्यं बलं ज्ञातुं तव वा तस्य वाऽधिकम्। आर्द्रं शुष्कमिति ह्येतत्सुमहद्राघवान्तरम्4.11.89।।

nātra śakyṃ balṃ jñātuṃ tava vā tasya vā'dhikam| ārdrṃ śuṣkamiti hyetatsumahadrāghavāntaram4.11.89||

Translation

अत्र here (in this case), तव your, बलम् strength, अधिकं वा is more or, तस्य वा or his, ज्ञातुम् to know, न शक्यम् not able, राघव Rama, आर्द्रम् wet, शुष्कमिति dried, एतत् this, सुमहत् great, अन्तरं हि difference.

Meaning

'I was unable to gauge whether your strength is more than his (Vali's) since there is a great difference between a dry body and a wet one.

KK-11-90Kishkindha Kanda 11.90

स एव संशयस्तात तव तस्य च यद्बले4.11.90।। सालमेकं तु निर्भिद्या भवेद्व्यक्तिर्बलाबले।

sa eva sṃśayastāta tava tasya ca yadbale4.11.90|| sālamekṃ tu nirbhidyā bhavedvyaktirbalābale|

Translation

तात O dear, तव your, तस्य च and his, यत् such, बले strength, स एव that alone, संशयः doubt, एकम् one, सालम् Sala tree, निर्भिद्य after splitling through, व्यक्तिः demonstrated, भवेत् will be known, बलाबले strength or otherwise.

Meaning

'O Dear, therefore, I have my doubt about your relative strength. If you can split a sala tree with a single arrow then can your strength or weakness be demonstrated.

KK-11-91Kishkindha Kanda 11.91

कृत्वेदं कार्मुकं सज्यं हस्तिहस्त मिवाततम्4.11.91।। आकर्णपूर्णमायम्य विसृजस्व महाशरम्।

kṛtvedṃ kārmukṃ sajyṃ hastihasta mivātatam4.11.91|| ākarṇapūrṇamāyamya visṛjasva mahāśaram|

Translation

आततम् stretched, हस्तिहस्तमिव like the elephant's trunk, एतत् that, कार्मुकम् bow, सज्यम् strung(tie it with string), कृत्वा after doing, आकर्णपूर्णम् drawing it (the string) to the ear, आयम्य after stretching, महाशरम् great arrow, विसृजस्व release.

Meaning

'Now string your bow, draw it like the trunk of an elephant up to your ear and release the great arrow.

KK-11-92Kishkindha Kanda 11.92

इमं हि सालं सहित स्त्वया शरो न संशयोऽत्रास्ति विदारयिष्यति। अलं विमर्शेन मम प्रियं ध्रुवं कुरुष्व राजात्मज शापितो मया4.11.92।।

imṃ hi sālṃ sahita stvayā śaro na sṃśayo'trāsti vidārayiṣyati| alṃ vimarśena mama priyṃ dhruvṃ kuruṣva rājātmaja śāpito mayā4.11.92||

Translation

राजन् king, त्वया your, प्रहितः good, शरः arrow, इमं सालम् this sala tree, विदारयिष्यति will pierce through, अत्र then, संशयः doubt, नास्ति will not be there, विमर्शेन clear, अलम् enough, ध्रुवम् certainly, मम to me, प्रियम् gladden, कुरुष्व do, मया my, प्रतिशापितः not to test you.

Meaning

'It will be enough and my doubt will be cleared. If you can pierce the sala tree with your arrow it will be my pleasure and not a test of your strength.

KK-11-93Kishkindha Kanda 11.93

यथा हि तेजस्सु वरस्सदा रवि र्यथा हि शैलो हिमवान्महाद्रिषु। यथा चतुष्पात्सु च केसरी वर स्तथा नरणामसि विक्रमे वरः4.11.93।।

yathā hi tejassu varassadā ravi ryathā hi śailo himavānmahādriṣu| yathā catuṣpātsu ca kesarī vara stathā naraṇāmasi vikrame varḥ4.11.93||

Translation

तेजस्सु among the brilliant, रविः Sun, यथा as, वरः best, महाद्रिषु among the great mountains, हिमवान् शैलः Himalaya mountain, यथा as, चतुष्पात्सु among the quadrupeds, केसरी lion, यथा as, वरः best, तथा similarly, नराणाम् among men, विक्रमे in valour, वरः best, असि you are.

Meaning

'Just as the Sun is the best among the brilliant, the Himalayas among the great mountains, the lion among the quadrupeds, so also you are the best among men of valour.' इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे एकादशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the eleventh sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
