BK-64-1Bala Kanda 64.1

सुरकार्यमिदं रम्भे कर्तव्यं सुमहत्त्वया। लोभनं कौशिकस्येह काममोहसमन्वितम्।।1.64.1।।

surakāryamidṃ rambhe kartavyṃ sumahattvayā| lobhanṃ kauśikasyeha kāmamohasamanvitam||1.64.1||

Translation

रम्भे O Rambha, इह now, कौशिकस्य Kausika's, काममोहसमन्वितम् possessed by lust and passions, लोभनम् enticing, सुमहत् highly great, इदम् this, सुरकार्यम् work of devatas, त्वया by you, कर्तव्यम् fit to be done.

Meaning

"O Rambha you must entice Viswamitra by lust and passion. This important work must be done by you in the interest of the gods".

BK-64-2Bala Kanda 64.2

तथोक्ता साऽप्सरा राम सहस्राक्षेण धीमता। व्रीडिता प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं प्रत्युवाच सुरेश्वरम्।।1.64.2।।

tathoktā sā'psarā rāma sahasrākṣeṇa dhīmatā| vrīḍitā prāñjalirvākyṃ pratyuvāca sureśvaram||1.64.2||

Translation

राम O Rama, धीमता by the sagacious, सहस्राक्षेण by Indra, तथा thus, उक्ता having been spoken, सा अप्सरा: that apsara, व्रीडिता bashfully, प्रञ्जलि: with folded palms in supplication, सुरेश्वरम् leader of gods Indra, वाक्यम् words, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Meaning

O Rama, to these words of the sagacious, thousandeyed Lord of the gods (Indra) that apsara with folded hands bashfully replied:

BK-64-3Bala Kanda 64.3

अयं सुरपते घोरो विश्वामित्रो महामुनि:। घोरमुत्सृजते क्रोधं मयि देव न संशय:।।1.64.3।। ततो हि मे भयं देव प्रासादं कर्तुमर्हसि।

ayṃ surapate ghoro viśvāmitro mahāmuni:| ghoramutsṛjate krodhṃ mayi deva na sṃśaya:||1.64.3|| tato hi me bhayṃ deva prāsādṃ kartumarhasi|

Translation

सुरपते O Lord of devatas, अयम् महामुनि: this mighty ascetic, विश्वामित्र: Visvamitra, घोर: is a frightful person, देव O Lord, मयि in me, घोरम् fearful, क्रोधम् wrath, उत्सृजते will release, संशय: न no doubt, तत: for that reason, मे my, भयम् fear, देव O lord, प्रसादम् favour, कर्तुम् to do, अर्हसि behoves of you.

Meaning

'Lord of the devatas this mighty ascetic Viswamitra is a terrible person. He will ceratinly release on his dreadful anger (curse me). O Lord this is my apprehension. You should excuse me'.

BK-64-4Bala Kanda 64.4

एवमुक्तस्तया राम रम्भया भीतया तदा।।1.64.4।। तामुवाच सहस्राक्षो वेपमानां कृताञ्जलिम्।

evamuktastayā rāma rambhayā bhītayā tadā||1.64.4|| tāmuvāca sahasrākṣo vepamānāṃ kṛtāñjalim|

Translation

राम O Rama, भीतया with fear, तया रम्भया by that Rambha, तदा then, एवम् thus, उक्त: spoken, सहस्राक्ष: Indra, वेपमानाम् trembling, कृताञ्जलिम् standing with folded palms, ताम् addressing her, उवाच said.

Meaning

O Rama having heard Rambha trembling in fear and standing with folded palms, Indra spoke:

BK-64-5-6Bala Kanda 64.5–6 (युग्मम्)

माभैषी रम्भे भद्रं ते कुरुष्व मम शासनम्।।1.64.5।। कोकिलो हृदयग्राही माधवे रुचिरद्रुमे। अहं कन्दर्पसहित स्स्थास्यामि तव पार्श्वत:।।1.64.6।।

mābhaiṣī rambhe bhadrṃ te kuruṣva mama śāsanam||1.64.5|| kokilo hṛdayagrāhī mādhave ruciradrume| ahṃ kandarpasahita ssthāsyāmi tava pārśvata:||1.64.6||

Translation

रम्भे O Rambha, मा भैषी: have no fear, ते भद्रम् safety to you, मम my, शासनम् order, कुरुष्व carry out, अहम् I, रुचिरद्रुमे with booming trees, माधवे in the season of Spring, हृदयग्राही captivating the heart, कोकिल: cuckoo, कन्दर्पसहित: in the company of Kandarpa, Cupid, तव your, पार्श्वत: side, स्थास्यामि will stay.

Meaning

'O Rambha have no fear. Feel safe. Carry out my order. When the trees look so beautiful in spring I shall in captivating the form of a cuckoo, stay by your side in the company of Kamadeva (Cupid).

BK-64-7Bala Kanda 64.7

त्वं हि रूपं बहुगुणं कृत्वा परमभास्वरम्। तमृषिं कौशिकं रम्भे भेदयस्व तपस्विनम्।।1.64.7।।

tvṃ hi rūpṃ bahuguṇṃ kṛtvā paramabhāsvaram| tamṛṣiṃ kauśikṃ rambhe bhedayasva tapasvinam||1.64.7||

Translation

रम्भे O Rambha, त्वम् you, बहुगुणम् displaying many romantic gestures, परमभास्वरम् highly shining, रूपम् form, कृत्वा having assumed, तपस्विनम् mighty ascestic, तम् ऋषिम् that rishi, कौशिकम् Visvamitra, भेदयस्व break him (from penance).

Meaning

O Rambha displaying many (romantic) gestures and assuming a fascinating form, distract the mighty ascetic, Kausika (Viswamitra)'.

BK-64-8Bala Kanda 64.8

सा श्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य कृत्वा रूपमनुत्तमम्। लोभयामास ललिता विश्वामित्रं शुचिस्मिता।।1.64.8।।

sā śrutvā vacanṃ tasya kṛtvā rūpamanuttamam| lobhayāmāsa lalitā viśvāmitrṃ śucismitā||1.64.8||

Translation

सा she, तस्य his, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा having listened, अनुत्तमम् highly excellent, रूपम् form, कृत्वा having asumed, ललिता beautiful, शुचिस्मिता with bright smile, विश्वामित्रम् Visvamitra, लोभयामास allured.

Meaning

At these words (of Indra), Rambha, assumed any form of excellent beauty and with a bright smile set out to allure Viswamitra.

BK-64-9Bala Kanda 64.9

कोकिलस्य च शुश्राव वल्गु व्याहरत: स्वनम्। सम्प्रहृष्टेन मनसा तत एनामुदैक्षत।।1.64.9।।

kokilasya ca śuśrāva valgu vyāharata: svanam| samprahṛṣṭena manasā tata enāmudaikṣata||1.64.9||

Translation

वल्गु sweet, charming, व्याहरत: making notes, कोकिलस्य cuckoo's, स्वनम् voice of, शुश्राव heard, तत: afterwards, सम्प्रहृष्टेन with a delighted, मनसा mind, एनाम् her, उदैक्षत beheld.

Meaning

Excited by the charming warble of the cuckoo, Viswamitra opened his eyes.

BK-64-10Bala Kanda 64.10

अथ तस्य च शब्देन गीतेनाप्रतिमेन च। दर्शनेन च रम्भाया मुनिस्सन्देहमागत:।।1.64.10।।

atha tasya ca śabdena gītenāpratimena ca| darśanena ca rambhāyā munissandehamāgata:||1.64.10||

Translation

अथ afterwards, तस्य that cuckoo's, शब्देन sounds, अप्रतिमेन incomparable, गीतेन song, रम्भाया: with the Rambha's, दर्शनेन च presence also, मुनि: the ascetic, सन्देहम् doubt, आगत: arose.

Meaning

On hearing the sound of the incomparable song of the cuckoo along with the sight of Rambha, a doubt arose in the mind of the ascetic.

BK-64-11Bala Kanda 64.11

सहस्राक्षस्य तत्कर्म विज्ञाय मुनिपुङ्गव:। रम्भां क्रोधसमाविष्ट श्शशाप कुशिकात्मज:।।1.64.11।।

sahasrākṣasya tatkarma vijñāya munipuṅgava:| rambhāṃ krodhasamāviṣṭa śśaśāpa kuśikātmaja:||1.64.11||

Translation

मुनिपुङ्गव: eminent ascetic, कुशिकात्मज: son of Kusika, सहस्राक्षस्य Indra's, तत् that one, कर्म work, विज्ञाय having recognised, क्रोधसमाविष्ट: seized of anger, रम्भाम् Rambha, शशाप cursed.

Meaning

Son of Kushika, the eminent ascetic knew it was the work of Indra. Seized with anger, he cursed Rambha:

BK-64-12Bala Kanda 64.12

यन्मां लोभयसे रम्भे कामक्रोधजयैषिणम्। दशवर्षसहस्राणि शैली स्थास्यसि दुर्भगे ।।1.64.12।।

yanmāṃ lobhayase rambhe kāmakrodhajayaiṣiṇam| daśavarṣasahasrāṇi śailī sthāsyasi durbhage ||1.64.12||

Translation

दुर्भगे O Unfortunate one, रम्भे Rambha, कामक्रोधजयैषिणम् with a desire to conquer wrath and passion, माम् me, यत् since, लोभयसे seduce me (for that reason), दश वर्षसहस्राणि ten thousand years, शैली as rock, स्थास्यसि shall become.

Meaning

'O luckless Rambha, since you have endeavoured to distract me from my desire to conquer wrath and passion, you shall turn into a rock and remain so for ten thousand years'.

BK-64-13Bala Kanda 64.13

ब्राह्मण स्सुमहातेजा स्तपोबलसमन्वित:। उद्धरिष्यति रम्भे त्वां मत्क्रोधकलुषीकृताम्।।1.64.13।।

brāhmaṇa ssumahātejā stapobalasamanvita:| uddhariṣyati rambhe tvāṃ matkrodhakaluṣīkṛtām||1.64.13||

Translation

रम्भे O Rambha, सुमहातेजा: highly splendrous, तपोबलसमन्वित: endowed with the power of asceticism, ब्राह्मण: Brahmana, मत्क्रोधकलुषीकृताम् fouled on account of my anger, त्वाम् you, उद्धरिष्यति will liberate.

Meaning

'O Rambha an effulgent brahmin, endowed with the power of asceticism, will liberate you from this state into which you have fallen on account of my anger'.

BK-64-14Bala Kanda 64.14

एवमुक्त्वा महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनि:। अशक्नुवन् धारयितुं क्रोधं सन्तापमागत:।।1.64.14।।

evamuktvā mahātejā viśvāmitro mahāmuni:| aśaknuvan dhārayituṃ krodhṃ santāpamāgata:||1.64.14||

Translation

महातेजा: exceedingly lustrous, महामुनि: great sage, विश्वामित्र: Visvamitra, क्रोधम् anger, धारयितुम् to contain, अशक्नुवन् unable, एवम् thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, सन्तापम् distress, आगत: experienced.

Meaning

The brilliant Viswamitra, the great ascetic, now experienced remorse for his inability to contain anger.

BK-64-15Bala Kanda 64.15

तस्य शापेन महता रम्भा शैली तदाऽभवत्। वचश्शृत्वा च कन्दर्पो महर्षेस्स च निर्गत:।।1.64.15।।

tasya śāpena mahatā rambhā śailī tadā'bhavat| vacaśśṛtvā ca kandarpo maharṣessa ca nirgata:||1.64.15||

Translation

तदा then, तस्य his महता by great, शापेन (because of )curse, रम्भा Rambha, शैली अभवत् became a rock, महर्षे: maharshi's, वच: words, श्रुत्वा having listened, कन्दर्प: Kandarapa, स: च devendra, निर्गत: fled away.

Meaning

This mighty curse, of the great saint transformed Rambha into a rock and sent Kamadeva and Indra to their heels.

BK-64-16Bala Kanda 64.16

कोपेन स महातेजास्तपोऽपहरणे कृते। इन्द्रियैरजितै राम न लेभे शान्तिमात्मन:।।1.64.16।।

kopena sa mahātejāstapo'paharaṇe kṛte| indriyairajitai rāma na lebhe śāntimātmana:||1.64.16||

Translation

राम O Rama, महातेजा: highly powerful, स: Visvamitra, कोपेन with anger, तपोपहरणे in deprivation of his ascetic merit, कृते having been made, अजितै: with unconquered, इन्द्रियै: senses, आत्मन: his own, शान्तिम् peace, न लेभे did not get.

Meaning

"O Rama highly powerful Viswamitra was deprived of his ascetic merit due to his anger. He had no peace of mind for his inability to control his senses.

BK-64-17Bala Kanda 64.17

बभूवास्य मनश्चिन्ता तपोऽपहरणे कृते । नैव क्रोधं गमिष्यामि न च वक्ष्ये कथञ्चन।।1.64.17।।

babhūvāsya manaścintā tapo'paharaṇe kṛte | naiva krodhṃ gamiṣyāmi na ca vakṣye kathañcana||1.64.17||

Translation

तपोपहरणे कृते having been deprived of his ascetic merit, अस्य for him, मनश्चिन्ता बभूव thought arose in his mind, क्रोधम् anger, नैव गमिष्यामि never shall I obtain, कथञ्चन in what so ever manner, न च वक्ष्ये I shall not speak also.

Meaning

Having been deprived of his ascetic merit, he resolved not to lose his temper nor ever breathe a word".

BK-64-18Bala Kanda 64.18

अथवा नोच्छवसिष्यामि संवत्सरशतान्यपि। अहं विशोषयिष्यामि ह्यात्मानं विजितेन्द्रिय:।।1.64.18।।

athavā nocchavasiṣyāmi sṃvatsaraśatānyapi| ahṃ viśoṣayiṣyāmi hyātmānṃ vijitendriya:||1.64.18||

Translation

अथवा further, संवत्सरशतान्यपि even for hundreds of years, नोच्छवसिष्यामि I shall not breathe, अहम् I, विजितेन्द्रिय: having conquered my senses, आत्मानम् this body, विशोषयिष्यामि will emaciate.

Meaning

"Further, I shall not even inhale for hundreds of years. I shall conquer my senses and dry up this body.

BK-64-19Bala Kanda 64.19

तावद्यावद्धि मे प्राप्तं ब्राह्मण्यं तपसाऽऽर्जितम्। अनुच्छवसन्नभुञ्जान स्तिष्ठेयं शाश्वतीस्समा:।।1.64.19।। न हि मे तप्यमानस्य क्षयं यास्यन्ति मूर्तय:।

tāvadyāvaddhi me prāptṃ brāhmaṇyṃ tapasā''rjitam| anucchavasannabhuñjāna stiṣṭheyṃ śāśvatīssamā:||1.64.19|| na hi me tapyamānasya kṣayṃ yāsyanti mūrtaya:|

Translation

मे for me, तपसा by austerities, आर्जितम् earned, ब्राह्मण्यम् brahminhood, यावत् until, प्रप्तम् is obtained, तावत् till then, अनुच्छवसन् suspending my breath, अभुञ्जान: abstaining from food, शाश्वती: समा: for innumerable years, तिष्ठेयम् I shall stay, तप्यमानसय while performing austerities, मे my, मूर्तय: limbs, क्षयम् deterioration, न यास्यन्ति will not get.

Meaning

Until brahminhood is obtained by my austerities, I shall stay without breathing or eating for innumerable years. While performing penance, my limbs shall not undergo deterioration".

BK-64-20Bala Kanda 64.20

एवं वर्षसहस्रस्य दीक्षां स मुनिपुङ्गव:।।1.64.20।। चकाराप्रतिमां लोके प्रतिज्ञां रघुनन्दन।

evṃ varṣasahasrasya dīkṣāṃ sa munipuṅgava:||1.64.20|| cakārāpratimāṃ loke pratijñāṃ raghunandana|

Translation

रघुनन्दन O Rama, स: मुनिपुङ्गव: that eminent ascetic, एवम् in this way, लोके in this world, अप्रतिमाम् unparalleled, वर्षसहस्रस्य दीक्षाम् religious practices for a thousand years, प्रतिज्ञां vow, चकार made.

Meaning

"O Descendant of Raghu in this way that eminent ascetic took an unprecedented vow to practise penance for a thousand years". इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे चतुष्षष्टितमस्सर्ग:।। Thus ends the sixtyfourth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
