BK-47-1Bala Kanda 47.1

सप्तधातु कृते गर्भे दिति: परमदु:खिता। सहस्राक्षं दुराधर्षं वाक्यं सानुनयाऽब्रवीत्।।1.47.1।।

saptadhātu kṛte garbhe diti: paramadu:khitā| sahasrākṣṃ durādharṣṃ vākyṃ sānunayā'bravīt||1.47.1||

Translation

गर्भे when the embryo, सप्तधा into seven pieces, कृते having been cut, दिति: Diti, परमदु:खिता highly distressed, दुराधर्षम् unassailable, सहस्राक्षम् Indra, सानुनया affectionate, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Deeply distressed Diti, having come to know that the embryo had been severed into seven pieces, humbly spoke to the unassailable Indra.

BK-47-2Bala Kanda 47.2

ममापराधाद्गर्भोऽयं सप्तधा विफलीकृत:। नापराधोऽस्ति देवेश तवात्र बलसूदन।।1.47.2।।

mamāparādhādgarbho'yṃ saptadhā viphalīkṛta:| nāparādho'sti deveśa tavātra balasūdana||1.47.2||

Translation

बलसूदन O Slayer of Balasura, देवेश Devendra, मम my, अपराधात् by the fault, अयम् this, गर्भ: embryo, सप्तधा into seven pieces, विफलीकृत: rendered useless, अत्र in this matter, तव your, अपराध: fault, नास्ति was not there.

Meaning

"O Indra, Slayer of Balasura, because of my fault this embryo has been made into seven pieces and rendered useless. In this matter you have not committed any fault.

BK-47-3Bala Kanda 47.3

प्रियं तु कर्तुमिच्छामि मम गर्भविपर्यये। मरुतां सप्तसप्तानां स्थानपाला भवन्त्विमे।।1.47.3।।

priyṃ tu kartumicchāmi mama garbhaviparyaye| marutāṃ saptasaptānāṃ sthānapālā bhavantvime||1.47.3||

Translation

गर्भविपर्यये this misfortune to embryo, मम for me, प्रियम् favour, कर्तुम् to do, इच्छामि I am desiring, इमे this, सप्त seven pieces, सप्तानां seven, मरुताम् maruts, स्थानपाला guardians of regions, भवन्तु become.

Meaning

This disaster to the embryo has happened contrary to expectations. Hence, I seek a favour from you. Let these seven pieces become seven guardians of marut regions (regions of the wind).

BK-47-4Bala Kanda 47.4

वातस्कन्धा: इमे सप्त चरन्तु दिवि पुत्रक । मारुता इति विख्याता दिव्यरूपा ममात्मजा:।।1.47.4।।

vātaskandhā: ime sapta carantu divi putraka | mārutā iti vikhyātā divyarūpā mamātmajā:||1.47.4||

Translation

पुत्रक O Son, सप्त seven, इमे these, मम my, आत्मजा: sons, दिव्यरूपा: having celestial beauty, वातस्कन्धा: presiding deities for Vata Skandha (divisions of wind), मारुता: इति named Maruts, विख्याता: wellknown, दिवि in the sky (intermediate regions), चरन्तु let them wander.

Meaning

O Son, all these seven are my sons of celestial beauty.They will become pesiding deities for Vata Skandha (divisions of wind) and let them be wellknown as maruts wandering in the universe.

BK-47-5Bala Kanda 47.5

ब्रह्मलोकं चरत्वेक इन्द्रलोकं तथाऽपर:। दिवि वायुरिति ख्यातस्तृतीयोऽपि महायशा:।।1.47.5।।

brahmalokṃ caratveka indralokṃ tathā'para:| divi vāyuriti khyātastṛtīyo'pi mahāyaśā:||1.47.5||

Translation

एक: one, ब्रह्मलोकम् in Brahma loka, चरतु may move about, तथा similarly, अपर: another, इन्द्रलोकम् Indra loka, महायशा: highly renowned, तृतीयोऽपि third one, वायुरिति known as Vayu, ख्यात: wellknown, दिवि in this universe, move about.

Meaning

Among them, one will move about in Brahmaloka, another in Indraloka, and the third, well known as vayu will move around in the sky.

BK-47-6Bala Kanda 47.6

चत्वारस्तु सुरश्रेष्ठ दिशो वै तव शासनात्। सञ्चरिष्यन्तु भद्रं ते देवभूता ममात्मजा:।।1.47.6।।

catvārastu suraśreṣṭha diśo vai tava śāsanāt| sañcariṣyantu bhadrṃ te devabhūtā mamātmajā:||1.47.6||

Translation

सुरश्रेष्ठ O Best of devatas, चत्वार: four, मम आत्मजा: my sons, तव your, शासनात् by command, देवभूता: becoming celestial beings, दिश: directions, सञ्चरिष्यन्तु may range about.

Meaning

O best of devatas by your command the other four sons will remain celestial, and will range about in four directions.

BK-47-7Bala Kanda 47.7

तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सहस्राक्ष: पुरन्दर:। उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं दितिं बलनिषूदन:।।1.47.7।।

tasyāstadvacanṃ śrutvā sahasrākṣa: purandara:| uvāca prāñjalirvākyṃ ditiṃ balaniṣūdana:||1.47.7||

Translation

सहस्राक्ष: thousandeyed, बलनिषूदन: slayer of Bala, पुरन्दर: Indra, तस्या: her, तत् वचनम् those words, शृत्वा having heard, प्राञ्जलि: with folded palms, दितिम् addressing Diti, वाक्यम् these words, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

The thousandeyed Indra, slayer of Bala, on hearing Diti's words, addressed her with folded palms, saying:

BK-47-8Bala Kanda 47.8

सर्वमेतद्यथोक्तं ते भविष्यति न संशय:। विचरिष्यन्ति भद्रं ते देवभूतास्तवात्मजा:।।1.47.8।।

sarvametadyathoktṃ te bhaviṣyati na sṃśaya:| vicariṣyanti bhadrṃ te devabhūtāstavātmajā:||1.47.8||

Translation

ते to you, यथा as, उक्तम् said, एतत् सर्वम् all this, भविष्यति will take place, संशय: doubt, न not there, तव your, आत्मजा: sons, देवभूता: like celestial beings, विचरिष्यन्ति shall wander about, भद्रम् ते prosperity to you.

Meaning

"Everything will, no doubt, happen the way you said. Your sons will wander about as celestial beings. Prosperity to you."

BK-47-9Bala Kanda 47.9

एवं तौ निश्चयं कृत्वा मातापुत्रौ तपोवने। जग्मतुस्त्रिदिवं राम कृतार्थाविति नश्श्रुतम्।।1.47.9।।

evṃ tau niścayṃ kṛtvā mātāputrau tapovane| jagmatustridivṃ rāma kṛtārthāviti naśśrutam||1.47.9||

Translation

राम O Rama, तौ मातापुत्रौ those mother and sons, एवम् in this way, निश्चयम् conclusion, कृत्वा having arrived, कृतार्थौ having fulfilled their desire, त्रिदिवम् towords heaven, जग्मतु: had gone, इति श्रुतम् thus heard.

Meaning

"O Rama mother and sons having arrived at this conclusion in the tapovana ascended to heaven with their desire fulfilled. This is what we have heard."

BK-47-10Bala Kanda 47.10

एष देशस्स काकुत्स्थ महेन्द्राध्युषित: पुरा। दितिं यत्र तपस्सिद्धामेवं परिचचार स:।।1.47.10।।

eṣa deśassa kākutstha mahendrādhyuṣita: purā| ditiṃ yatra tapassiddhāmevṃ paricacāra sa:||1.47.10||

Translation

काकुत्स्थ O Rama, एष: this one, पुरा formerly, महेन्द्राध्युषित: inhabited by Indra, स: that, देश: country, यत्र where, स: he, तप: in austerities, सिद्धाम् succeded, दितिम् Diti, एवम् this way, परिचचार attended on.

Meaning

"O Descendant of Kakustha (Rama) this is that country which was formerly inhabited by Indra. Here Indra attended on Diti who achieved the fruit of her austerities.

BK-47-11-12Bala Kanda 47.11–12 (युग्मम्)

इक्ष्वाकोऽस्तु नरव्याघ्र पुत्र: परमधार्मिक:।।1.47.11।। अलम्बुषायामुत्पन्नो विशाल इति विश्रुत:। तेन चासीदिह स्थाने विशालेति पुरी कृता।।1.47.12।।

ikṣvāko'stu naravyāghra putra: paramadhārmika:||1.47.11|| alambuṣāyāmutpanno viśāla iti viśruta:| tena cāsīdiha sthāne viśāleti purī kṛtā||1.47.12||

Translation

नरव्याघ्र O Tiger among men, Rama, इक्ष्वाको: for Ikshvaku, अलम्बुषायाम् in Alambusa, परमधार्मिक: highly virtuous, विशाल इति named Vishala, विश्रुत: wellknown, पुत्र: son, उत्पन्न: was norn, तेन by him, इह here, स्थाने in this place, विशालेति named as Vishala, पुरी city, कृता आसीत् was built.

Meaning

"O Tiger among men (Rama) this highly virtuous and wellknown son named Vishala was born to Ikshvakus in Alambusa. Where, a city named Vishala was built.

BK-47-13Bala Kanda 47.13

विशालस्य सुतो राम हेमचन्द्रो महाबल:। सुचन्द्र इति विख्यात: हेमचन्द्रादनन्तर:।।1.47.13।।

viśālasya suto rāma hemacandro mahābala:| sucandra iti vikhyāta: hemacandrādanantara:||1.47.13||

Translation

राम O Rama, महाबल: mighty, हेमचन्द्र: Hemachandra, विशालस्य Vishala's, सुत: son, हेमचन्द्रात् from Hemachandra, अनन्तर: his successor, सुचन्द्र इति as Suchandra, विख्यात: celebrated one.

Meaning

O Rama mighty Hemachandra was Vishala's son. Hemachandra's successor was the celebrated Suchandra.

BK-47-14Bala Kanda 47.14

सुचन्द्रतनयो राम धूम्राश्व इति विश्रुत:। धूम्राश्वतनयश्चापि सञ्जयस्समपद्यत।।1.47.14।।

sucandratanayo rāma dhūmrāśva iti viśruta:| dhūmrāśvatanayaścāpi sañjayassamapadyata||1.47.14||

Translation

राम O Rama, सुचन्द्रतनय: son of Suchandra, धूम्राश्व इति as Dhumraswa, विश्रुत: wellknown, सञ्जय: Sanjaya, धूम्राश्वतनय: son of Dhumraswa, समपद्यत was born.

Meaning

O Rama son of Suchandra was Dhumraswa, wellknown Sanjaya was the son of Dhumraswa.

BK-47-15Bala Kanda 47.15

सञ्जयस्य सुतश्श्रीमान् सहदेव: प्रतापवान्। कुशाश्वस्सहदेवस्य पुत्र: परमधार्मिक:।।1.47.15।।

sañjayasya sutaśśrīmān sahadeva: pratāpavān| kuśāśvassahadevasya putra: paramadhārmika:||1.47.15||

Translation

श्रीमान् prosperous, प्रतापवान् powerful, सहदेव: Sahadeva, सञ्जयस्य Sanjaya's, सुत: son, परमधार्मिक: highly virtuous, कुशाश्व: Kusaswa, सहदेवस्य Sahadeva's, पुत्र: son.

Meaning

Prosperous and powerful Sahadeva was Sanjaya's son. Highly virtuous Kusaswa was Sahadeva's son.

BK-47-16Bala Kanda 47.16

कुशाश्वस्य महातेजा सोमदत्त: प्रतापवान्। सोमदत्तस्य पुत्रस्तु काकुत्स्थ इति विश्रुत:।।1.47.16।।

kuśāśvasya mahātejā somadatta: pratāpavān| somadattasya putrastu kākutstha iti viśruta:||1.47.16||

Translation

महातेजा: highly lustrous, प्रतापवान् powerful, सोमदत्त: Somadatta, कुशाश्वस्य Kusaswa's (son), सोमदत्तस्य Somadatta's, पुत्र: son, काकुत्स्थ: Kakutstha, इति विश्रुत: is wellknown.

Meaning

Brilliant and powerful Somadatta was Kusaswa's son. That Somadatta's son was Kakutstha is wellknown.

BK-47-17Bala Kanda 47.17

तस्य पुत्रो महातेजा: सम्प्रत्येष पुरीमिमाम्। आवसत्यमरप्रख्यस्सुमतिर्नाम दुर्जय:।।1.47.17।।

tasya putro mahātejā: sampratyeṣa purīmimām| āvasatyamaraprakhyassumatirnāma durjaya:||1.47.17||

Translation

सम्प्रति now, इमां पुरीम् in this city, तस्य पुत्र: son of Ikshvaku, महातेजा: heroic, अमरप्रख्य: equal to devatas, दुर्जय: invincible, सुमतिर्नाम named Sumati, आवसति is living.

Meaning

Son of Ikshvakus, Sumati comparable to devatas, invincible and exceedingly energetic is still ruling this city.

BK-47-18Bala Kanda 47.18

इक्ष्वाकोस्तु प्रसादेन सर्वे वैशालिका नृपा:। दीर्घायुषो महात्मानो वीर्यवन्तस्सुधार्मिका:।।1.47.18।।

ikṣvākostu prasādena sarve vaiśālikā nṛpā:| dīrghāyuṣo mahātmāno vīryavantassudhārmikā:||1.47.18||

Translation

इक्ष्वाको: Ikshwaku's, प्रसादेन by his graciousness, वैशालिका: relating to Vishala, नृपा: kings, सर्वे all, दीर्घायुष: possessing longlife, महात्मान: exalted, वीर्यवन्त: valourous, सुधार्मिका: are virtuous.

Meaning

By the grace of the Ikshvakus, all the kings of Vishala have been long lived and exalted, valiant and deeply religious.

BK-47-19Bala Kanda 47.19

इहाद्य रजनीं राम सुखं वत्स्यामहे वयम्। श्व: प्रभाते नरश्रेष्ठ जनकं द्रष्टुमर्हसि।।1.47.19।।

ihādya rajanīṃ rāma sukhṃ vatsyāmahe vayam| śva: prabhāte naraśreṣṭha janakṃ draṣṭumarhasi||1.47.19||

Translation

राम O Rama, अद्य today, रजनीम् night, वयम् we, इह here, सुखम् happily, वत्स्यामहे will stay on, नरश्रेष्ठ O Best among men, श्व: tomorrow, प्रभाते early morning, जनकम् Janaka, द्रष्टुम् to see, अर्हसि fit and proper.

Meaning

O Rama we shall spend the right happily here. O Best among men On the tomorrow we see Janaka".

BK-47-20Bala Kanda 47.20

सुमतिस्तु महातेजा विश्वामित्रमुपागतम्। श्रुत्वा नरवरश्रेष्ठ: प्रत्युद्गच्छन्महायशा:।।1.47.20।।

sumatistu mahātejā viśvāmitramupāgatam| śrutvā naravaraśreṣṭha: pratyudgacchanmahāyaśā:||1.47.20||

Translation

महातेजा: most brilliant, महायशा: man of immense renown, नरवरश्रेष्ठ: chief of men, सुमतिस्तु king Sumati, विश्वामित्रम् Visvamitra, उपागतम् arrived, श्रुत्वा having heard, प्रत्युद्गच्छत् went forward (to receive him).

Meaning

Having heard of the arrival of Viswamitra the celebrated Sumati, most brilliant chief of kings proceeded (to receive him).

BK-47-21Bala Kanda 47.21

पूजां च परमां कृत्वा सोपाध्यायस्सबान्धव:। प्राञ्जलि: कुशलं पृष्ट्वा विश्वामित्रमथाब्रवीत्।।1.47.21।।

pūjāṃ ca paramāṃ kṛtvā sopādhyāyassabāndhava:| prāñjali: kuśalṃ pṛṣṭvā viśvāmitramathābravīt||1.47.21||

Translation

सोपाध्याय: with spiritual preceptors, सबान्धव: together with his relatives, परमाम् supreme, पूजाम् honours, कृत्वा having performed, प्राञ्जलि: with folded palms, कुशलम् welfare, पृष्ट्वा having enquired, अथ thereafter, विश्वामित्रम् addressing Visvamitra, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Along with his spiritual preceptors and relatives he paid Viswamitra great respect, enquired his wellbeing and said:

BK-47-22Bala Kanda 47.22

धन्योऽस्म्यनुगृहीतोऽस्मि यस्य मे विषयं मुनि:। सम्प्राप्तो दर्शनं चैव नास्ति धन्यतरो मम।।1.47.22।।

dhanyo'smyanugṛhīto'smi yasya me viṣayṃ muni:| samprāpto darśanṃ caiva nāsti dhanyataro mama||1.47.22||

Translation

यस्य मे my, विषयम् country, मुनि: Muni (you), सम्प्राप्त: has visited, दर्शनम् चैव having graced all of us, धन्य: अस्मि blessed am I, अनुगृहीत: अस्मि I am ( highly )favoured, मम for me, न अस्ति धन्यतर: there is none more blessed than me.

Meaning

"O Sage no one is more blessed than me since you have favoured me with your arrival in my country." इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे सप्तचत्वारिंशस्सर्ग:।। Thus ends the fortyseventh sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
