BK-45-1Bala Kanda 45.1

विश्वामित्रवचश्श्रुत्वा राघव स्सहलक्ष्मण:। विस्मयं परमं गत्वा विश्वामित्रमथाब्रवीत्।।1.45.1।।

viśvāmitravacaśśrutvā rāghava ssahalakṣmaṇa:| vismayṃ paramṃ gatvā viśvāmitramathābravīt||1.45.1||

Translation

सहलक्ष्मण: together with Lakshmana, राघव: Rama, विश्वामित्रवच: words of Visvamitra, श्रुत्वा having listened, परमम् great, विस्मयम् astonishment, गत्वा having obtained, अथ thereafter, विश्वामित्रम् addressing Visvamitra, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

On hearing the words of Viswamitra, Rama along with Lakshmana, filled with astonishment said to him:

BK-45-2Bala Kanda 45.2

अत्यद्भुतमिदं ब्रह्मन् कथितं परमं त्वया। गङ्गावतरणं पुण्यं सागरस्यापि पूरणम्।।1.45.2।।

atyadbhutamidṃ brahman kathitṃ paramṃ tvayā| gaṅgāvataraṇṃ puṇyṃ sāgarasyāpi pūraṇam||1.45.2||

Translation

ब्रह्मन् O Knower of Brahma, त्वया by you, कथितम् is narrated, परमम् great, इदम् this, गङ्गावतरणम् descent of Ganga, पुण्यम् sacred, सागरस्य ocean's, पूरणम् replenishment, अत्यद्भुतम् exceedingly wonderful.

Meaning

"O Knower of the Brahman this story narrated by you relating to the descent of the sacred Ganga and the fullness of the ocean (due to Ganga's fall) is very wonderful".

BK-45-3Bala Kanda 45.3

तस्य सा शर्वरी सर्वा सह सौमित्रिणा तदा। जगाम चिन्तयानस्य विश्वामित्रकथां शुभाम् ।।1.45.3।।

tasya sā śarvarī sarvā saha saumitriṇā tadā| jagāma cintayānasya viśvāmitrakathāṃ śubhām ||1.45.3||

Translation

तदा then, तस्य Rama, सौमित्रिणा सह together with Lakshmana, शुभाम् holy, विश्वामित्रकथाम् the story narrated by Visvamitra, चिन्तयानस्य while thinking, सा that, सर्वा completely, शर्वरी night, जगाम passed away.

Meaning

Then Rama along with Lakshmana spent the whole night reflecting on the auspicious story narrated by Viswamitra.

BK-45-4Bala Kanda 45.4

तत: प्रभाते विमले विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम्। उवाच राघवो वाक्यं कृताह्निकमरिन्दम:।।1.45.4।।

tata: prabhāte vimale viśvāmitrṃ mahāmunim| uvāca rāghavo vākyṃ kṛtāhnikamarindama:||1.45.4||

Translation

तत: afterwards, अरिन्दम: the destroyer of enemies, राघव: Rama, विमले clear, प्रभाते early morning, कृताह्निकम् after completing daily religious and spiritual rites, महामुनिम् great ascetic, विश्वामित्रम् addressing Visvamitra, वाक्यम् words, उवाच said.

Meaning

Thereafter, the progeny of the Raghus, the destroyer of enemies (Rama) addressed Viswamitra in the clear early morning after Viswamitra had completed his routine rites:

BK-45-5Bala Kanda 45.5

गता भगवती रात्रिश्श्रोतव्यं परमं श्रुतम्। क्षणभूतेव नौ रात्रि स्सम्वृत्तेयं महातप:।।1.45.5।। इमां चिन्तयतस्सर्वां निखिलेन कथां तव।

gatā bhagavatī rātriśśrotavyṃ paramṃ śrutam| kṣaṇabhūteva nau rātri ssamvṛtteyṃ mahātapa:||1.45.5|| imāṃ cintayatassarvāṃ nikhilena kathāṃ tava|

Translation

महातप: O Great performer of austerities, परमम् supreme, श्रोतव्यम् fit to be listened, श्रुतम् has been heard, भगवती glorious, रात्रि: night, गता has passed, तव your, इमाम् this, सर्वाम् complete, कथाम् story, चिन्तयत: pondering over, नौ for both of us, इयम् this, रात्रि: night, क्षणभूतेव like a moment, सम्वृत्ता has turned out to be.

Meaning

"O Noble ascetic we have heard this great story worthy to be listened. As we both lay pondering over the entire story (narrated by you), the glorious night passed off just like a moment.

BK-45-6-7Bala Kanda 45.6–7 (युग्मम्)

तराम सरितां श्रेष्ठां पुण्यां त्रिपथगां नदीम्।।1.45.6।। नौरेषा हि सुखास्तीर्णा ऋषीणां पुण्यकर्मणाम्। भगवन्तमिह प्राप्तं ज्ञात्वा त्वरितमागता।।1.45.7।।

tarāma saritāṃ śreṣṭhāṃ puṇyāṃ tripathagāṃ nadīm||1.45.6|| naureṣā hi sukhāstīrṇā ṛṣīṇāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām| bhagavantamiha prāptṃ jñātvā tvaritamāgatā||1.45.7||

Translation

सरिताम् among rivers, श्रेष्ठाम् excellent, पुण्याम् holy, त्रिपथगाम् flowing in three directions, नदीम् river Ganga, तराम let us cross over, सुखास्तीर्णा spread comfortably, पुण्यकर्मणाम् of men of pious acts, ऋषीणाम् saints, एषा this, नौ: boat, भगवन्तम् you venerable, इह here, प्राप्तम् had arrived, ज्ञत्वा knowing, त्वरितम् speedily, आगता हि has come.

Meaning

We will cross over Ganga, the best of rivers, the sacred river that flows in three directions.This boat of pious saints which is well laidout has come here swiftly, having come to know that you, O Venerable one have arrived".

BK-45-8Bala Kanda 45.8

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राघवस्य महात्मन:। सन्तारं कारयामास सर्षिसङ्घ स्सराघव:।।1.45.8।।

tasya tadvacanṃ śrutvā rāghavasya mahātmana:| santārṃ kārayāmāsa sarṣisaṅgha ssarāghava:||1.45.8||

Translation

तस्य महात्मन: of that illustrious, राघवस्य Rama's, तत् वचनम् those words, श्रुत्वा having heard, सर्षिसङ्घ: accompanied by hosts of sages, सराघव: together with Rama and Lakshmana, सन्तारम् to cross over, कारयामास made (arrangements).

Meaning

Hearing the words of noble Rama, he (Viswamitra), accompanied by hosts of sages besides Rama and Lakshmana made arrangements to cross (the river).

BK-45-9Bala Kanda 45.9

उत्तरं तीरमासाद्य सम्पूज्यर्षिगणं तदा। गङ्गाकूले निविष्टास्ते विशालां ददृशु: पुरीम्।।1.45.9।।

uttarṃ tīramāsādya sampūjyarṣigaṇṃ tadā| gaṅgākūle niviṣṭāste viśālāṃ dadṛśu: purīm||1.45.9||

Translation

उत्तरं तीरम् northern bank, आसाद्य having reached, तदा then, ऋषिगणम् groups of sages, सम्पूज्य having paid homage, गङ्गाकूले on the bank of river Ganga, निविष्टा: encamped, ते they, विशालां पुरीम् city of Vishala, ददृशु: beheld.

Meaning

Having reached the northern bank, they paid homage to the sages encamped on the bank of Ganga and beheld the city of Vishala.

BK-45-10Bala Kanda 45.10

ततो मुनिवरस्तूर्णं जगाम सह राघव: । विशालां नगरीं रम्यां दिव्यां स्वर्गोपमां तदा।।1.45.10।।

tato munivarastūrṇṃ jagāma saha rāghava: | viśālāṃ nagarīṃ ramyāṃ divyāṃ svargopamāṃ tadā||1.45.10||

Translation

तत: subsequently, मुनिवर: best among ascetics, Visvamitra, सह राघव: together with Rama and Lakshmana, तदा then, रम्याम् enchanting, दिव्याम् splendid, स्वर्गोपमाम् like unto heaven, विशालाम् towards Vishala, नगरीम् city, तूर्णम् speedily, जगाम went.

Meaning

Thereupon Viswamitra, the best of ascetics, accompanied by Rama and Lakshmana soon proceeded towards the enchanting and splendid city of Vishala comparable to heaven.

BK-45-11Bala Kanda 45.11

अथ रामो महाप्राज्ञो विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम् । पप्रच्छ प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा विशालामुत्तमां पुरीम्।।1.45.11।।

atha rāmo mahāprājño viśvāmitrṃ mahāmunim | papraccha prāñjalirbhūtvā viśālāmuttamāṃ purīm||1.45.11||

Translation

अथ thereafter, महाप्राज्ञ: great intellectual, राम: Rama, प्राञ्जलि: भूत्वा with folded palms, महामुनिम् eminent ascetic, विश्वामित्रम् Visvamitra, उत्तमाम् excellent, विशालां पुरीम् about the city of Vishala, पप्रच्छ enquired.

Meaning

Thereafter great intellectual, Rama, with folded palms enquired of eminent ascetic Viswamitra, about the excellent city of Vishala.

BK-45-12Bala Kanda 45.12

कतरो राजवंशोऽयं विशालायां महामुने। श्रोतुमिच्छामि भद्रं ते परं कौतूहलं हि मे।।.1.45.12।।

kataro rājavṃśo'yṃ viśālāyāṃ mahāmune| śrotumicchāmi bhadrṃ te parṃ kautūhalṃ hi me||.1.45.12||

Translation

महामुने O Distinguished ascetic, विशालायाम् in this city of Vishala, अयम् this, राजवंश: royal lineage, कतर: whose, श्रोतुम् to listen, इच्छामि I am desirous, ते भद्रम् may you prosper, मे to me, परम् great, कौतूहलं हि is my curiosity.

Meaning

"O Distinguished ascetic, which royal dynasty is ruling this city of Vishala? Could you tell me? Great is my curiosity. May you prosper"

BK-45-13Bala Kanda 45.13

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा रामस्य मुनिपुङ्गव:। आख्यातुं तत्समारेभे विशालस्य पुरातनम्।।1.45.13।।

tasya tadvacanṃ śrutvā rāmasya munipuṅgava:| ākhyātuṃ tatsamārebhe viśālasya purātanam||1.45.13||

Translation

मुनिपुङ्गव: preeminent among ascetics, तस्य रामस्य Rama's, तत् वचनम् those words, श्रुत्वा having listened, विशालस्य city of Vishala's, पुरातनम् ancient, तत् that, आख्यातुम् to relate, समारेभे commenced.

Meaning

Viswamitra, preeminent among ascetics, hearing the words of Rama commenced to relate the history of the ancient city of Vishala.

BK-45-14Bala Kanda 45.14

श्रूयतां राम शक्रस्य कथां कथयतश्शुभाम्। अस्मिन् देशे तु यद्वृत्तं तदपि शृणु राघव।।1.45.14।।

śrūyatāṃ rāma śakrasya kathāṃ kathayataśśubhām| asmin deśe tu yadvṛttṃ tadapi śṛṇu rāghava||1.45.14||

Translation

राम O Rama, शक्रस्य Indra's, शुभाम् auspicious, कथाम् legendary story, कथयत: being related by me, श्रूयताम् may be heard, अस्मिन् देशे in this country, यत् what, वृत्तम् had happened, तदपि that also, शृणु you may listen.

Meaning

"O Rama hear the auspicious legend of Indra. Listen, too, what had happened to this country.

BK-45-15Bala Kanda 45.15

पूर्वं कृतयुगे राम दिते: पुत्रा महाबला:। अदितेश्च महाभाग वीर्यवन्तस्सुधार्मिका:।।1.45.15।।

pūrvṃ kṛtayuge rāma dite: putrā mahābalā:| aditeśca mahābhāga vīryavantassudhārmikā:||1.45.15||

Translation

महाभाग राम O Blessed Rama, पूर्वम् formerly, कृतयुगे in Krita yuga, दिते: पुत्रा: sons of Diti, अदितेश्च sons of Aditi, महाबला: highly powerful, वीर्यवन्त: possessed of valour, सुधार्मिका: highly virtuous (used to live).

Meaning

O Blessed Rama in kritayuga, the sons of Diti were very strong and those of Aditi were spirited and righteous.

BK-45-16Bala Kanda 45.16

ततस्तेषां नरश्रेष्ठ बुद्धिरासीन्महात्मनाम् । अमरा अजराश्चैव कथं स्याम निरामया:।।1.45.16।।

tatasteṣāṃ naraśreṣṭha buddhirāsīnmahātmanām | amarā ajarāścaiva kathṃ syāma nirāmayā:||1.45.16||

Translation

तत: then, नरश्रेष्ठ O Best among men, महात्मनाम् of the illustrious, तेषाम् for them, अजरा: free from old age, अमराश्चैव free from death, निरामया: free from disease, कथम् how, स्याम we will be, बुद्धि: आसीत् a thought came.

Meaning

O Best among men a thought came to those illustrious ones, 'how can we be free from old age, death and disease'?

BK-45-17Bala Kanda 45.17

तेषां चिन्तयतां राम बुद्धिरासीन्महात्मनाम्। क्षीरोदमथनं कृत्वा रसं प्राप्स्याम तत्र वै।।1.45.17।।

teṣāṃ cintayatāṃ rāma buddhirāsīnmahātmanām| kṣīrodamathanṃ kṛtvā rasṃ prāpsyāma tatra vai||1.45.17||

Translation

राम O Rama, चिन्तयताम् while they were reflecting over this matter, तेषाम् for them, महात्मनाम् noble ones, बुद्धि: a thought, आसीत् came, क्षीरोदमथनम् churning the ocean of milk, कृत्वा having made, तत्र from there, रसम् nectar of immortality, प्राप्स्याम we will obtain.

Meaning

"O Rama While the noble sons were reflecting over this matter an idea flashed across their minds to get nectar by churning the ocean of milk.

BK-45-18Bala Kanda 45.18

ततो निश्चित्य मथनं योक्त्रं कृत्वा च वासुकिम्। मन्थानं मन्दरं कृत्वा ममन्थुरमितौजस:।।1.45.18।।

tato niścitya mathanṃ yoktrṃ kṛtvā ca vāsukim| manthānṃ mandarṃ kṛtvā mamanthuramitaujasa:||1.45.18||

Translation

तत: there upon, अमितौजस: those men who were very powerful, मथनम् to churn, निश्चित्य having decided, वासुकिम् Vasuki, योक्त्रम् as rope of the churning rod, कृत्वा having made, मन्दरम् Mandara mountain, मन्थानम् as churning rod, कृत्वा having made, ममन्थु: churned.

Meaning

Thereupon, having decided to churn (the ocean mind) those very powerful ones, made Vasuki, (the great snake), as a rope and Mandara mountain as the churning rod.And started churning it.

BK-45-19Bala Kanda 45.19

अथ वर्षसहस्रेण योक्त्रसर्पशिरांसि च। वमन्त्यति विषं तत्र ददंशुर्दशनैश्शिला:।।1.45.19।।

atha varṣasahasreṇa yoktrasarpaśirāṃsi ca| vamantyati viṣṃ tatra dadṃśurdaśanaiśśilā:||1.45.19||

Translation

अथ thereafter, वर्षसहस्रेण in a thousand years, योक्त्रसर्पशिरांसि the hoods of the serpent made as rope, तत्र there, अतिविषम् virulent poison, वमन्ति vomitting, शिला: rocks, दशनै: with teeth, ददंशु: had bitten.

Meaning

After a thousand years, the hoods of the snake made as rope vomitted venom and started biting the rocks of the Mandara mountain with their teeth.

BK-45-20Bala Kanda 45.20

उत्पपाताग्निसङ्काशं हालाहलमहाविषम्। तेन दग्धं जगत्सर्वं सदेवासुरमानुषम्।।1.45.20।।

utpapātāgnisaṅkāśṃ hālāhalamahāviṣam| tena dagdhṃ jagatsarvṃ sadevāsuramānuṣam||1.45.20||

Translation

अग्निसङ्काशम् resembling fire, हालाहलमहाविषम् virulent venom known as HalaHala, उत्पपात was sprung up, तेन by that, सदेवासुरमानुषम् with devatas, asuras, mortals, सर्वम् entire, जगत् world, दग्धम् was burnt.

Meaning

Therefrom was produced halahala, virulent venom resembling fire.The entire universe consisting of devatas, asuras and mortals was burnt down.

BK-45-21Bala Kanda 45.21

अथ देवा महादेवं शङ्करं शरणार्थिन:। जग्मु: पशुपतिं रुद्रं त्राहि त्राहीति तुष्टुवु:।।1.45.21।।

atha devā mahādevṃ śaṅkarṃ śaraṇārthina:| jagmu: paśupatiṃ rudrṃ trāhi trāhīti tuṣṭuvu:||1.45.21||

Translation

अथ then, देवा: devatas, शरणार्थिन: seeking refuge, महादेवम् great god, शङ्करम् the god causing happiness, पशुपतिम् lord of all living beings, रुद्रम् to Rudra, जग्मु: had gone, त्राहि त्राहि इति save us, save us, तुष्टुवु: they extolled.

Meaning

The devatas sought refuge in the great god Rudra who causes happiness, the Lord of all living beings. 'Save us, Save us', the cried.

BK-45-22Bala Kanda 45.22

एवमुक्तस्ततो देवैर्देवदेवेश्वर: प्रभु:। प्रादुरासीत्ततोऽत्रैव शङ्खचक्रधरो हरि:।।1.45.22।।

evamuktastato devairdevadeveśvara: prabhu:| prādurāsīttato'traiva śaṅkhacakradharo hari:||1.45.22||

Translation

तत: thereupon, प्रभु: lord, देवदेवेश्वर: the overlord, who is god of gods, देवै: by devatas, एवम् in this way, उक्त: having been spoken, तत: thereafter, शङ्खचक्रधर: bearing the conch and discus, हरि: Hari, अत्रैव here itself, प्रादुरासीत् appeared.

Meaning

Thereupon, Hari the Lord of celestial beings extolled by the devatas appeared bearing the conch and discus.

BK-45-23-24Bala Kanda 45.23–24 (युग्मम्)

उवाचैनं स्मितं कृत्वा रुद्रं शूलभृतं हरि:। दैवतैर्मथ्यमाने तु यत्पूर्वं समुपस्थितम् ।।1.45.23।। त्वदीयंहि सुरश्रेष्ठ सुराणामग्रजोऽसि यत् । अग्रपूजामिमां मत्वा गृहाणेदं विषं प्रभो।।1.45.24।।

uvācainṃ smitṃ kṛtvā rudrṃ śūlabhṛtṃ hari:| daivatairmathyamāne tu yatpūrvṃ samupasthitam ||1.45.23|| tvadīyṃhi suraśreṣṭha surāṇāmagrajo'si yat | agrapūjāmimāṃ matvā gṛhāṇedṃ viṣṃ prabho||1.45.24||

Translation

हरि: Hari, स्मितं कृत्वा having smiled, शूलभृतम् god bearing the Trident, एनं रुद्रम् addressing Rudra, उवाच spoke, सुरश्रेष्ठ O Chief of celestials, दैवतै: by devatas, मथ्यमाने while churning, यत् whichever, पूर्वम् earlier, समुपस्थितम् is produced, त्वदीयं हि is yours, सुराणाम् among devatas, अग्रज: असि were born earliest, प्रभो O Capable one, इमाम् this one, अग्रपूजाम् the first offering to the most distinguished, मत्वा thinking, इदम् this, विषम् venom, गृहाण receive.

Meaning

Hari, smiling said to the tridentbearing Rudra "O Chief of celestial beings you were born the earliest among the devatas. Therefore, while churning the ocean whichever is produced first shall be offered to you. Considering it the first offering, O Lord accept this venom."

BK-45-25Bala Kanda 45.25

इत्युक्त्वा च सुरश्रेष्ठस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत। देवतानां भयं दृष्टवाश्रुत्वा वाक्यं तु शार्ङ्गिण:। हालाहलविषं घोरं स जग्राहामृतोपमम्।।1.45.25।।

ityuktvā ca suraśreṣṭhastatraivāntaradhīyata| devatānāṃ bhayṃ dṛṣṭavāśrutvā vākyṃ tu śārṅgiṇa:| hālāhalaviṣṃ ghorṃ sa jagrāhāmṛtopamam||1.45.25||

Translation

सुरश्रेष्ठ: excellent among devatas, इति in this manner, उक्त्वा having spoken, तत्रैव there alone, अन्तरधीयत vanished, स: Shiva, देवतानाम् devatas', भयम् fear, दृष्टवा having seen, शार्ङ्गिण: वाक्यम् Visnu's word, श्रुत्वा having heard, घोरम् dreadful, हालाहलविषम् HalaHala venom, अमृतोपमम् treating it as nectar, जग्राह received.

Meaning

Visnu, the highest among the devatas having the spoken, vanished. Siva who had heard Visnu's words and seen the fear of the gods received that dreadful halahala treating it as nectar.

BK-45-26Bala Kanda 45.26

देवान्विसृज्य देवेशो जगाम भगवान् हर:। ततो देवासुरास्सर्वे ममन्थू रघुनन्दन ।।1.45.26।।

devānvisṛjya deveśo jagāma bhagavān hara:| tato devāsurāssarve mamanthū raghunandana ||1.45.26||

Translation

देवेश: lord of devatas, भगवान् venerable, हर: Siva, देवान् devatas, विसृज्य leaving behind, जगाम had gone, रघुनन्दन O Descendent of Raghu, तत: then, सर्वे all, देवासुरा: devatas and asuras, ममन्थु: churned.

Meaning

Lord of the gods, venerable Siva went away to his abode leaving behind the devatas. O Descendant of Raghu then all the devatas and asuras resumed churning.

BK-45-27Bala Kanda 45.27

प्रविवेशाथ पातालं मन्थान: पर्वतोऽनघ। ततो देवास्सगन्धर्वास्तुष्टुवुर्मधुसूदनम्।।1.45.27।।

praviveśātha pātālṃ manthāna: parvato'nagha| tato devāssagandharvāstuṣṭuvurmadhusūdanam||1.45.27||

Translation

अनघ O Sinless one, अथ after that, मन्थान: पर्वत: mountain Mandara used as churning rod, पातालम् to Patala, प्रविवेश entered (sank down), तत: thereupon, सगन्धर्वा: along with gandharvas, देवा: devatas, मधुसूदनम् Vishnu, तुष्टुवु: extolled.

Meaning

'O Sinless one after the mountain (Mandara) used as churning rod sank down to nether world (patala) the devatas along with the gandharvas invoked Visnu'.

BK-45-28Bala Kanda 45.28

त्वं गति: सर्वभूतानां विशेषेण दिवौकसाम्। पालयास्मान्महाबाहो गिरिमुद्धर्तुमर्हसि।।1.45.28।।

tvṃ gati: sarvabhūtānāṃ viśeṣeṇa divaukasām| pālayāsmānmahābāho girimuddhartumarhasi||1.45.28||

Translation

महाबाहो O Strong armed one, त्वम् you, सर्वभूतानाम् for all living beings, गति: ultimate refuge, विशेषेण specially, दिवौकसाम् for devatas, अस्मान् us, पालय protect, गिरिम् mountain, उद्धर्तुम् अर्हसि fit to lift it.

Meaning

"O mightyarmed Visnu you are the ultimate refuge for all living beings, specially for the devatas. Protect us, you (alone) are fit to lift up the Mandara mountain".

BK-45-29Bala Kanda 45.29

इति श्रुत्वा हृषीकेश: कामठं रूपमास्थित:। पर्वतं पृष्ठत: कृत्वा शिश्ये तत्रोदधौ हरि:।।1.45.29।।

iti śrutvā hṛṣīkeśa: kāmaṭhṃ rūpamāsthita:| parvatṃ pṛṣṭhata: kṛtvā śiśye tatrodadhau hari:||1.45.29||

Translation

हृषीकेश: controller of sense organs, हरि: Visnu, इति these words, श्रुत्वा having heard, कामठम् रूपम् form of tortoise, आस्थित: assuming, पर्वतम् mountain, पृष्ठत: on its back, कृत्वा having made, तत्र there, उदधौ in the ocean, शिश्ये reclined.

Meaning

Having heard these words, the controller of the sense organs, Visnu, assumed the form of a tortoise reclined in the ocean supporting the mountain on its back.

BK-45-30Bala Kanda 45.30

पर्वताग्रे तु लोकात्मा हस्तेनाक्रम्य केशव:। देवानां मध्यत: स्थित्वा ममन्थ पुरुषोत्तम:।।1.45.30।।

parvatāgre tu lokātmā hastenākramya keśava:| devānāṃ madhyata: sthitvā mamantha puruṣottama:||1.45.30||

Translation

लोकात्मा omnipresent, पुरुषोत्तम: supreme Purusha, केशव: Visnu, देवानाम् devatas, मध्यत: amidst, स्थित्वा standing, पर्वताग्रे on the peak of mountain, हस्तेन with his hand, आक्रम्य occupying, ममन्थ churned.

Meaning

Visnu, the Supreme being, the soul of the universe standing amidst the devatas took hold of the peak of mountain with his hand and continued to churn the ocean.

BK-45-31Bala Kanda 45.31

अथ वर्षसहस्रेण सदण्डस्सकमण्डलु:। पूर्वं धन्वन्तरिर्नाम अप्सराश्च सुवर्चस:।।1.45.31।।

atha varṣasahasreṇa sadaṇḍassakamaṇḍalu:| pūrvṃ dhanvantarirnāma apsarāśca suvarcasa:||1.45.31||

Translation

अथ there after, वर्षसहस्रेण in thousand years, सदण्ड: holding staff, सकमण्डलु: with water pot (carried by ascetics), धन्वन्तरिर्नाम named Danvantari, सुवर्चस: of high lustre, अप्सराश्च apsaras, पूर्वम् in the begining (came out).

Meaning

In this way thousand years rolled by. In the beginining came out Dhanvantari holding a staff and a water pot (carried by ascetics) and apsaras of high lustre.

BK-45-32Bala Kanda 45.32

अप्सु निर्मथनादेव रसास्तस्माद्वरस्त्रिय:। उत्पेतुर्मनुजश्रेष्ठ तस्मादप्सरसोऽभवन्।।1.45.32।।

apsu nirmathanādeva rasāstasmādvarastriya:| utpeturmanujaśreṣṭha tasmādapsaraso'bhavan||1.45.32||

Translation

मनुजश्रेष्ठ O Best among men, अप्सु waters, निर्मथनात् churning, तस्मात् रसात् from that essence, वरस्त्रिय: excellent women, उत्पेतु: emerged, तस्मात् for that reason, अप्सरस: apsaras, अभवन् became.

Meaning

O Best among men excellent women emerged out of the essence produced by churning of waters. Therefore they are known as apsarasas.

BK-45-33Bala Kanda 45.33

षष्टि: कोट्योऽभवंस्तासाम् अप्सराणां सुवर्चसाम्। असङ्ख्येयास्तु काकुत्स्थ यास्तासां परिचारिका:।।1.45.33।।

ṣaṣṭi: koṭyo'bhavṃstāsām apsarāṇāṃ suvarcasām| asaṅkhyeyāstu kākutstha yāstāsāṃ paricārikā:||1.45.33||

Translation

काकुत्स्थ O Kakutstha, सुवर्चसाम् highly lustrous, तासाम् अप्सराणाम् those apsarasas, षष्टि: कोट्य: sixty crores, अभवन् produced, तासाम् their, या: परिचारिका: those attendants, असङ्ख्येया: countless in number.

Meaning

O Kakutstha there appeared sixty crore highly lustrous apsarasas. Their attendants were countless in number.

BK-45-34Bala Kanda 45.34

न तास्स्म परिगृह्णन्ति सर्वे ते देवदानवा:। अप्रतिग्रहणात्ताश्च सर्वास्साधारणास्स्मृता:।।1.45.34।।

na tāssma parigṛhṇanti sarve te devadānavā:| apratigrahaṇāttāśca sarvāssādhāraṇāssmṛtā:||1.45.34||

Translation

सर्वे all, ते देवदानवा: devas or danavas, ता: them, न परिगृह्णन्ति स्म did not accept in marriage, अप्रतिग्रहणात् unmarried as they were, ता: सर्वा: all of them, साधारणा: belonging to all, स्मृता: have been called.

Meaning

Neither devas nor danavas accept them in marriage. Unmarried, all of them have been regarded as belonging to all.

BK-45-35Bala Kanda 45.35

वरुणस्य तत: कन्या वारुणी रघुनन्दन । उत्पपात महाभागा मार्गमाणा परिग्रहम्।।1.45.35।।

varuṇasya tata: kanyā vāruṇī raghunandana | utpapāta mahābhāgā mārgamāṇā parigraham||1.45.35||

Translation

रघुनन्दन O Joys of Raghus, Rama, तत: thereafter, वरुणस्य Varuna's, कन्या daughter, वारुणी Vaaruni, परिग्रहम् seeking consort, मार्गमाणा searching, उत्पपात fell out.

Meaning

O Joy of the Raghus (Rama) thereafter Varuna's daughter Varuni (goddess of wine) came out searching for a consort.

BK-45-36Bala Kanda 45.36

दिते: पुत्रा न तां राम जगृहुर्वरुणात्मजाम्। अदितेस्तु सुता वीर जगृहुस्तामनिन्दिताम्।।1.45.36।।

dite: putrā na tāṃ rāma jagṛhurvaruṇātmajām| aditestu sutā vīra jagṛhustāmaninditām||1.45.36||

Translation

राम O Rama, तां वरुणात्मजाम् that Varuni, दिते: Diti's, पुत्रा: sons, न जगृहु: did not accept, वीर O heroic one, अनिन्दिताम् blemishless, ताम् her, अदिते: सुता: sons of Aditi, जगृहु: received.

Meaning

O Rama while Diti's sons did not accept the unblemished Varuni, O heroic one, the sons of Aditi did.

BK-45-37Bala Kanda 45.37

असुरास्तेन दैतेयास्सुरास्तेनादितेस्सुता:। हृष्टा: प्रमुदिताश्चासन् वारुणीग्रहणात्सुरा:।।1.45.37।।

asurāstena daiteyāssurāstenāditessutā:| hṛṣṭā: pramuditāścāsan vāruṇīgrahaṇātsurā:||1.45.37||

Translation

तेन for that reason, दैतेया: sons of Diti, असुरा: Asuras (without wine), अदिते: Aditi's, सुता: sons, सुरा: Suras, सुरा: devatas, वारुणीग्रहणात् for having accepted Vaaruni, हृष्टा: (प्रमुदिताः च) आसन् became glad.

Meaning

For that reason, sons of Diti were called asuras. Aditi's sons were known as suras. Devatas grew exceedingly glad for having Varuni.

BK-45-38Bala Kanda 45.38

उच्चैश्श्रवा हयश्रेष्ठो मणिरत्नं च कौस्तुभम्। उदतिष्ठन्नरश्रेष्ठ तथैवामृतमुत्तमम्।।1.45.38।।

uccaiśśravā hayaśreṣṭho maṇiratnṃ ca kaustubham| udatiṣṭhannaraśreṣṭha tathaivāmṛtamuttamam||1.45.38||

Translation

नरश्रेष्ठ O Foremost among men, उच्चैश्श्रवा: Ucchaishravas, the celestial horse, हयश्रेष्ठ: best of horses, कौस्तुभम् Kausthubham, मणिरत्नं च best among Jewels, तथैव and also, उत्तमम् excellent, अमृतम् nectar, उदतिष्ठन् arose (out of foam).

Meaning

O Foremost among men (Rama) ucchaishravas, the best of horses (the celestial horse), kausthubham, the best jewel and also nectar came (from churning).

BK-45-39Bala Kanda 45.39

अथ तस्य कृते राम महानासीत्कुलक्षय:। अदितेस्तु तत: पुत्रा दिते: पुत्रानसूदयन्।।1.45.39।।

atha tasya kṛte rāma mahānāsītkulakṣaya:| aditestu tata: putrā dite: putrānasūdayan||1.45.39||

Translation

राम O Rama, अथ thereafter, तस्य कृते for it's sake, महान् great, कुलक्षय: आसीत् destructin of race took place, तत: thereafter, अदिते: Aditi's, पुत्रा: sons, दिते: Diti's, पुत्रान् sons, असूदयन् killed.

Meaning

O Rama the race of devatas and daityas suffered great destruction because of (their fight for) that nectar. Thereafter Aditi's sons, the devatas killed Diti's sons, the daityas.

BK-45-40Bala Kanda 45.40

एकतोऽभ्यागमन् सर्वे ह्यसुरा राक्षसैस्सह। युद्धमासीन्महाघोरं वीर त्रैलोक्यमोहनम्।।1.45.40।।

ekato'bhyāgaman sarve hyasurā rākṣasaissaha| yuddhamāsīnmahāghorṃ vīra trailokyamohanam||1.45.40||

Translation

वीर O Heroic Rama, सर्वे all, असुरा: asuras, राक्षसै: सह along with rakshasas, एकत: on one side, अभ्यागमन् joined, त्रैलोक्यमोहनम् striking confusion (delusion) among the three worlds, महाघोरम् violently dreadful, युद्धम् battle, आसीत् took place.

Meaning

O Heroic Rama all the asuras along with the rakshasas joined on one side. A violent and a dreadful battle which threw the three worlds in to a great confusion, ensued.

BK-45-41Bala Kanda 45.41

यदा क्षयं गतं सर्वं तदा विष्णुर्महाबल:। अमृतं सोऽहरत्त्तूर्णं मायामास्थाय मोहिनीम्।।1.45.41।।

yadā kṣayṃ gatṃ sarvṃ tadā viṣṇurmahābala:| amṛtṃ so'haratttūrṇṃ māyāmāsthāya mohinīm||1.45.41||

Translation

यदा when, सर्वम् everything, क्षयं गतम् was perished, तदा then, महाबल: endowed with great power, स: विष्णु: Vishnu, मोहिनीम् Mohini form (elusivedelusive ), मायाम् illusion (maya), आस्थाय assuming, तूर्णम् speedily, अमृतम् nectar, आहरत् had stolen.

Meaning

When everything was destroyed completely, the exceedingly powerful Visnu assuming the form of Mohini a charming woman (elusive form) with the power of illusion quickly stole away the nectar.

BK-45-42Bala Kanda 45.42

ये गताऽभिमुखं विष्णुमक्षयं पुरुषोत्तमम्। सम्पिष्टास्ते तदा युद्धे विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना।।1.45.42।।

ye gatā'bhimukhṃ viṣṇumakṣayṃ puruṣottamam| sampiṣṭāste tadā yuddhe viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā||1.45.42||

Translation

अक्षयम् imperishable, पुरुषोत्तमम् supreme purusha, विष्णुम् Vishnu, ये those, युद्धे in the battle, अभिमुखम् in front of him, गता: had gone, ते they, प्रभविष्णुना by the capable, विष्णुना by Vishnu, सम्पिष्टा: were grounded.

Meaning

Those who opposed the imperishable, supreme purusha, Visnu, in the battle were crushed by all powerful Visnu.

BK-45-43Bala Kanda 45.43

अदितेरात्मजा वीरा दिते: पुत्रान्निजघ्निरे। तस्मिन् घोरे महायुद्धे दैतेयादित्ययोर्भृशम्।।1.45.43।।

aditerātmajā vīrā dite: putrānnijaghnire| tasmin ghore mahāyuddhe daiteyādityayorbhṛśam||1.45.43||

Translation

दैतेयादित्ययो: of the daityas and adityas, तस्मिन् in that, घोरे महायुद्धे great battle, वीरा: heroic, अदिते: Aditi's, आत्मजा: sons, दिते: Diti's, पुत्रान् sons, निजघ्निरे killed.

Meaning

In that great and terrible battle between daityas and devatas, Aditi's sons killed Diti's.

BK-45-44Bala Kanda 45.44

निहत्य दितिपुत्रांश्च राज्यं प्राप्य पुरन्दर:। शशास मुदितो लोकान् सर्षिसङ्घान् सचारणान्।।1.45.44।।

nihatya ditiputrāṃśca rājyṃ prāpya purandara:| śaśāsa mudito lokān sarṣisaṅghān sacāraṇān||1.45.44||

Translation

पुरन्दर: Indra, दितिपुत्रान् the sons of Diti, निहत्य having killed, राज्यम् kingdom, प्राप्य having gained, मुदित: pleased, सर्षिसङ्घान् in the company of rishis, सचारणान् celestial singers, लोकान् worlds, शशास ruled.

Meaning

Indra, having killed the sons of Diti was happy with the kingdom gained. He ruled the worlds in the company of rishis and celestial singers". इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे पञ्चचत्वारिंशस्सर्ग:।। Thus ends the fortyfifth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
