BK-37-1Bala Kanda 37.1

तप्यमाने तपो देवे देवा: सर्षिगणा: पुरा। सेनापतिमभीप्सन्त: पितामहमुपागमन्।।1.37.1।।

tapyamāne tapo deve devā: sarṣigaṇā: purā| senāpatimabhīpsanta: pitāmahamupāgaman||1.37.1||

Translation

पुरा in the olden days, देवे when Iswara, तप: तप्यमाने engaged in austerities, सर्षिगणा: together with ascetics, देवा: devatas, सेनापतिम् army general, अभीप्सन्त: desirous of obtaining, पितामहम् lord Brahma, उपागमन् approached.

Meaning

In olden days when Iswara was engaged in austerities, the devatas together with the ascetics, approached Lord Brahma for an army general.

BK-37-2Bala Kanda 37.2

ततोऽब्रुवन् सुरास्सर्वे भगवन्तं पितामहम्। प्रणिपत्य सुरास्सर्वे सेन्द्रास्साग्निपुरोगमा:।।1.37.2।।

tato'bruvan surāssarve bhagavantṃ pitāmaham| praṇipatya surāssarve sendrāssāgnipurogamā:||1.37.2||

Translation

तत: then, सेन्द्रा: along with Indra, अग्निपुरोगमा: fire god in their forefront, सुरा: devatas, सर्वे all, भगवन्तम् revered, पितामहम् lord Brahma, प्रणिपत्य saluting with folded hands, अब्रुवन् spoke.

Meaning

Then led by Indra and the Firegod all devatas approached Lord Brahma, the grandsire saluted him (with folded hands) and spoke.

BK-37-3Bala Kanda 37.3

यो न स्सेनापतिर्देव दत्तो भगवता पुरा। तप: परममास्थाय तप्यते स्म सहोमया।।1.37.3।।

yo na ssenāpatirdeva datto bhagavatā purā| tapa: paramamāsthāya tapyate sma sahomayā||1.37.3||

Translation

देव O lord, भगवता by the venerable one (you), पुरा formerly (at the time of creation), न: for us, य: सेनापति: that army general, दत्त: was given, उमया सह with Uma, परमम् great, तप: religious observance, आस्थाय having adopted, तप्यते is practising austerities.

Meaning

"O Lord in ancient times your lordship gave us an army general (at the time of creation). He is engrossed in great penance along with Uma .

BK-37-4Bala Kanda 37.4

यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं लोकानां हितकाम्यया। संविधत्स्व विधानज्ञ त्वं हि न: परमा गति:।।1.37.4।।

yadatrānantarṃ kāryṃ lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā| sṃvidhatsva vidhānajña tvṃ hi na: paramā gati:||1.37.4||

Translation

विधानज्ञ knower of the law and order, O Grandsire, लोकानाम् for the worlds, हितकाम्यया desiring welfare, अत्र in this matter, अनन्तरम् after this, यत् कार्यम् whichever act, संविधत्स्व you prescribe, त्वम् you, न: for us, परमा supreme, गति: हि verily our refuge.

Meaning

"O Knower of law and order O Grandsire verily you are our supreme refuge committed to the welfare of the worlds. Tell us what we should do in this matter (now that we cannot procreate a general on account of Uma's curse)".

BK-37-5Bala Kanda 37.5

देवतानां वचश्श्रुत्वा सर्वलोकपितामह:। सान्त्वयन्मधुरैर्वाक्यैस्त्रिदशानिदमब्रवीत्।।1.37.5।।

devatānāṃ vacaśśrutvā sarvalokapitāmaha:| sāntvayanmadhurairvākyaistridaśānidamabravīt||1.37.5||

Translation

सर्वलोकपितामह: grandsire of all the worlds, देवतानाम् devatas, वच: words, श्रुत्वा having heard, मधुरै: with sweet, वाक्यै: words, त्रिदशान् devatas, सान्त्वयन् consoling, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Hearing the words of the devatas, Brahma, the Grandsire of all the worlds consoled the devatas with sweet words, saying:

BK-37-6Bala Kanda 37.6

शैल पुत्र्या यदुक्तं तन्न प्रजास्यथ पत्निषु । तस्या वचनमक्लिष्टं सत्यमेतन्न संशय:।।1.37.6।।

śaila putryā yaduktṃ tanna prajāsyatha patniṣu | tasyā vacanamakliṣṭṃ satyametanna sṃśaya:||1.37.6||

Translation

यत् whatever, शैलपुत्र्या by Uma devi, उक्तम् has been said, तत् that, पत्निषु among your wives, प्रजास्यथ you will not bear progeny, तस्या: her, वचनम् words, अक्लिष्टम् infalliable, एतत् this one, सत्यम् certain,संशय: न no doubt.

BK-37-7Bala Kanda 37.7

इयमाकाशगा गङ्गा यस्यां पुत्रं हुताशन:। जनयिष्यति देवानां सेनापतिमरिन्दमम्।।1.37.7।।

iyamākāśagā gaṅgā yasyāṃ putrṃ hutāśana:| janayiṣyati devānāṃ senāpatimarindamam||1.37.7||

Translation

यस्याम् in this, हुताशन: fire god, अरिन्दमम् destroyer of enemies,, देवानाम् for devatas, सेनापतिम् army general, पुत्रम् son, जनयिष्यति will beget, इयम् such, आकाशगा flowing in the celestial regions, गङ्गा Ganga (exists).

Meaning

"Ganga keeps flowing in the celestial regions. Through Ganga the Firegod will beget a son who will be capable of destroying enemies. He will become the army general of the gods".

BK-37-8Bala Kanda 37.8

ज्येष्ठा शैलेन्द्रदुहिता मानयिष्यति तत्सुतम्। उमायास्तद्बहुमतं भविष्यति न संशय:।।1.37.8।।

jyeṣṭhā śailendraduhitā mānayiṣyati tatsutam| umāyāstadbahumatṃ bhaviṣyati na sṃśaya:||1.37.8||

Translation

ज्येष्ठा eldest, शैलेन्द्रदुहिता daughter of king of mountains, तत्सुतम् that son of Agni, मानयिष्यति will accept, तत् that one, उमाया: for Uma devi, बहुमतं भविष्यति will be acceptable, संशय: न no doubt.

Meaning

"Ganga, the eldest daughter of the king of the mountains, will tend that son of Agni. This will be totally acceptable to Uma. No doubt".

BK-37-9Bala Kanda 37.9

तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य कृतार्था रघुनन्दन। प्रणिपत्य सुरास्सर्वे पितामहमपूजयन्।।1.37.9।।

tacchrutvā vacanṃ tasya kṛtārthā raghunandana| praṇipatya surāssarve pitāmahamapūjayan||1.37.9||

Translation

रघुनन्दन O Rama, सुरा: सर्वे all devatas, तस्य Brahma's, तत् that, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा having heard, कृतार्था: successful in their mission, पितामहम् grandsire, प्रणिपत्य saluting with folded hands, अपूजयन् worshipped.

Meaning

"O son of the Raghus having heard Brahma's words all the devatas considered themselves successful in their mission. They saluted him with folded hands and offered their worship.

BK-37-10Bala Kanda 37.10

ते गत्वा पर्वतं राम कैलासं धातुमण्डितम्। अग्निं नियोजयामासु: पुत्रार्थं सर्वदेवता:।।1.37.10।।

te gatvā parvatṃ rāma kailāsṃ dhātumaṇḍitam| agniṃ niyojayāmāsu: putrārthṃ sarvadevatā:||1.37.10||

Translation

ते सर्वदेवता: all those devatas, धातुमण्डितम् adorned with minerals, कैलासं पर्वतम् mount Kailasa, गत्वा having gone, पुत्रार्थम् for begetting a son, अग्निम् firegod, नियोजयामासु: appointed.

Meaning

All the devatas, went to mount Kailasa, adorned with minerals, and urged the Firegod for a son.

BK-37-11Bala Kanda 37.11

देवकार्यमिदं देव संविधत्स्व हुताशन। शैलपुत्र्यां महातेजो गङ्गायां तेज उत्सृज।।1.37.11।।

devakāryamidṃ deva sṃvidhatsva hutāśana| śailaputryāṃ mahātejo gaṅgāyāṃ teja utsṛja||1.37.11||

Translation

देव O Lustrous, हुतशन O fire deity, इदम् this, देवकार्यम् divine wish, संविधत्स्व accomplish, महातेज: O god of mighty energy, तेज: vital fluid of Ishwara, शैलपुत्र्याम् in that mountain king's daughter, गङ्गायाम् Ganga, उत्सृज release.

Meaning

'O lustrous Firegod, accomplish this divine work. O god, possessed of mighty energy, release the vital fluid of Iswara in Ganga, daughter of the king of mountains.

BK-37-12Bala Kanda 37.12

देवतानां प्रतिज्ञाय गङ्गामभ्येत्य पावक:। गर्भं धारय वै देवि देवतानामिदं प्रियम्।।1.37.12।।

devatānāṃ pratijñāya gaṅgāmabhyetya pāvaka:| garbhṃ dhāraya vai devi devatānāmidṃ priyam||1.37.12||

Translation

पावक: fire deity, देवतानाम् for devatas, प्रतिज्ञाय promised, गङ्गाम् Ganga, अभ्येत्य having approached, देवि O devi, गर्भम् pregnancy, धारय वै bear, इदम् this, देवतानाम् devatas', प्रियम् desire.

Meaning

"The Firegod gave his consent. The devatas approached Ganga and said, 'O goddess bear the energy of Siva (inyour world) since this cause is dear to the gods'.

BK-37-13Bala Kanda 37.13

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दिव्यं रूपमधारयत्। दृष्ट्वा तन्महिमानं स समन्तादवकीर्यत।।1.37.13।।

tasya tadvacanṃ śrutvā divyṃ rūpamadhārayat| dṛṣṭvā tanmahimānṃ sa samantādavakīryata||1.37.13||

Translation

तस्य that firegod's, तद्वचनम् those words, श्रुत्वा having heard, दिव्यम् divine, रूपम् form, अधारयत् assumed, स: that firedeity, तन्महिमानम् her greatness, दृष्ट्वा beholding, समन्तात् on all sides, अवकीर्यत split over.

Meaning

"Hearing the words of the Firegod, Ganga assumed a divine form. Beholding her glory, the god of fire pervaded her from all sides.

BK-37-14Bala Kanda 37.14

समन्ततस्तदा देवीमभ्यषिञ्चत पावक:। सर्वस्रोतांसि पूर्णानि गङ्गाया रघुनन्दन।।1.37.14।।

samantatastadā devīmabhyaṣiñcata pāvaka:| sarvasrotāṃsi pūrṇāni gaṅgāyā raghunandana||1.37.14||

Translation

रघुनन्दन O Rama, तदा then, पावक: firegod, देवीम् Ganga devi, समन्तत: on all sides, अभ्यषिञ्चत discharged (sprinkled) the vital fluid of Ishwara preserved in his body, गङ्गाया: Ganga's, सर्वस्रोतांसि all her streams, पूर्णानि were filled.

Meaning

O Rama then, the Firegod discharged the vital fluid of Iswara, preserved in his body, which pervaded all sides of Ganga and all her streams were filled with (the fluid).

BK-37-15Bala Kanda 37.15

तमुवाच ततो गङ्गा सर्वदेवपुरोहितम्। अशक्ता धारणे देव तव तेज स्समुद्धतम्। दह्यमानाग्निना तेन सम्प्रव्यथितचेतना।।1.37.15।।

tamuvāca tato gaṅgā sarvadevapurohitam| aśaktā dhāraṇe deva tava teja ssamuddhatam| dahyamānāgninā tena sampravyathitacetanā||1.37.15||

Translation

तत: then, गङ्गा Ganga, सर्वदेवपुरोहितम् (Fire) who was standing ahead of all devatas, तम् addressing the firedeity, उवाच spoke, देव O God of fire, समुद्धतम् everincreasing, तव your, तेज: splendour, धारणे to hold, अशक्ता incapable, तेन अग्निना by firedeity (by that vital fluid), दह्यमाना being burnt, सम्प्रव्यथितचेतना I have greatly distressed consciousness.

Meaning

Ganga addressing the Firegod standing ahead of all the devatas said 'O god of fire, I am incapable of holding your everincreasing splendour. The fiery fluid is burning me. My consciousness is overwhelmed'.

BK-37-16Bala Kanda 37.16

अथाब्रवीदिदं गङ्गां सर्वदेवहुताशन:। इह हैमवती पादे गर्भोऽयं सन्निवेश्यताम्।।1.37.16।।

athābravīdidṃ gaṅgāṃ sarvadevahutāśana:| iha haimavatī pāde garbho'yṃ sanniveśyatām||1.37.16||

Translation

अथ thereafter, सर्वदेवहुताशन: partaker of oblations offered to all gods, गङ्गाम् Ganga, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke, अयम् this, गर्भ: embryo, इह here, हैमवती mountain Himavat, पादे slopes, सन्निवेश्यताम् may be placed.

Meaning

Thereafter the Firegod who is the partaker of oblations offered to all deities said to Ganga 'Place this embryo on this slope of Mountain Himavan'.

BK-37-17Bala Kanda 37.17

श्रुत्वा त्वग्निवचो गङगा तं गर्भमतिभास्वरम्। उत्ससर्ज महातेज स्स्रोतोभ्यो हि तदानघ ।।1.37.17।।

śrutvā tvagnivaco gaṅagā tṃ garbhamatibhāsvaram| utsasarja mahāteja ssrotobhyo hi tadānagha ||1.37.17||

Translation

महातेज: O Highly glorious, अनघ O Sinless one, अग्निवच: words of firegod, श्रुत्वा having heard, गङ्गा Ganga, तदा then, अतिभास्वरम् highly resplendent, तम् गर्भम् that embryo, स्रोतोभ्य: towards streams of the river, उत्ससर्ज released.

Meaning

"O glorious, sinless one, (Rama) hearing the words of the Firegod, Ganga then expelled that resplendent embryo from her streams.

BK-37-18Bala Kanda 37.18

यदस्या निर्गतं तस्मात्तप्तजाम्बूनदप्रभम् । काञ्चनं धरणीं प्राप्तं हिरण्यममलं शुभम्।।1.37.18।।

yadasyā nirgatṃ tasmāttaptajāmbūnadaprabham | kāñcanṃ dharaṇīṃ prāptṃ hiraṇyamamalṃ śubham||1.37.18||

Translation

अस्या: from this river Ganaga, तप्तजाम्बूनदप्रभम् resembling the lustre of the molten gold, यत् that embryo, निर्गतम् emerging out of her, धरणीम् earth, प्राप्तम् having reached, तस्मात् from it, शुभम् auspicious, काञ्चनम् bright, अमलम् pure, हिरण्यम् gold (was produced).

Meaning

The embryo that emerged from Ganga reached the earth. It resembled the lustre of molten gold. It furned into gold auspicious, bright and pure.

BK-37-19-20Bala Kanda 37.19–20 (युग्मम्)

ताम्रं कार्ष्णायसं चैव तैक्ष्ण्यादेवाभ्यजायत।।1.37.19।। मलं तस्याभवत्तत्र त्रपु सीसकमेव च। तदेतद्धरणीं प्राप्य नानाधातुरवर्धत।।1.37.20।।

tāmrṃ kārṣṇāyasṃ caiva taikṣṇyādevābhyajāyata||1.37.19|| malṃ tasyābhavattatra trapu sīsakameva ca| tadetaddharaṇīṃ prāpya nānādhāturavardhata||1.37.20||

Translation

तत्र there, तैक्ष्ण्यात् from its severity, ताम्रम् copper, कार्ष्णायसम् चैव iron also, अभ्यजायत were produced, तस्य from that embryo, मलम् dirt, त्रपु zinc, सीसकमेव lead, अभवत् born, तत् एतत् that vital fluid, धरणीम् earth, प्राप्य having reached, नानाधातु: various minerals, अवर्धत developed.

Meaning

There copper and iron were produced from its acidity, zinc and lead from its residue. Various minerals were formed when that embryo reached the earth.

BK-37-21Bala Kanda 37.21

निक्षिप्तमात्रे गर्भे तु तेजोभिरभिरञ्जितम्। सर्वं पर्वतसन्नद्धं सौवर्णमभवद्वनम्।।1.37.21।।

nikṣiptamātre garbhe tu tejobhirabhirañjitam| sarvṃ parvatasannaddhṃ sauvarṇamabhavadvanam||1.37.21||

Translation

गर्भे when that embryo, निक्षिप्तमात्रे had been just placed, सर्वम् all, पर्वतसन्नद्धम् sprouted on the mountain, वनम् forest, तेजोभि: with lustre, अभिरञ्जितम् reddened, सौवर्णम् अभवत् rendered golden.

Meaning

When the embryo was placed (in Ganga) it spread on all sides of the forest on the mountain. Irradiated with lustre the forest appeared golden.

BK-37-22Bala Kanda 37.22

जातरूपमिति ख्यातं तदा प्रभृति राघव। सुवर्णं पुरुषव्याघ्र हुताशनसमप्रभम्।।1.37.22।। तृणवृक्षलतागुल्मं सर्वं भवति काञ्चनम्।

jātarūpamiti khyātṃ tadā prabhṛti rāghava| suvarṇṃ puruṣavyāghra hutāśanasamaprabham||1.37.22|| tṛṇavṛkṣalatāgulmṃ sarvṃ bhavati kāñcanam|

Translation

पुरुषव्याघ्र O Best among men, राघव Rama, तदा प्रभृति then onwards, हुताशनसमप्रभम् effulgent like fire, सुवर्णम् gold, जातरूपम् Jatarupa (born with a form), (इति) ख्यातम् wellknown as, सर्वम् all, तृणवृक्षलतागुल्मम् with grass, shrubs, creepers and trees, काञ्चनं भवति became gold.

Meaning

O tiger among men, O scion of the Raghus Then onwards gold which is effulgent like fire, became wellknown as Jatarupa (pure form). The grass, shrubs, creepers and trees of that forest looked golden.

BK-37-23Bala Kanda 37.23

तं कुमारं ततो जातं सेन्द्रास्सह मरुद्गणा:।।1.37.23।। क्षीरसंभावनार्थाय कृत्तिकास्समयोजन्।

tṃ kumārṃ tato jātṃ sendrāssaha marudgaṇā:||1.37.23|| kṣīrasṃbhāvanārthāya kṛttikāssamayojan|

Translation

तत: thereafter, जातम् born, तं कुमारम् that Kumara, सेन्द्रा: together with Indra, मरुद्गणा: groups of deities, सह together, क्षीरसंभावनार्थाय with a view to suckle him as their own offspring, कृत्तिका: six nymphs (stars) to act as nurses, समयोजन् arranged.

Meaning

Thereafter Kumara was born (out of Ganga's womb). The gods together with Indra arranged six nymphs (stars) to act as nurses to suckle Kumara as their own offspring.

BK-37-24Bala Kanda 37.24

ता: क्षीरं जातमात्रस्य कृत्वा समयमुत्तमम्।।1.37.24।। ददु: पुत्रोऽयमस्माकं सर्वासामिति निश्चिता:।

tā: kṣīrṃ jātamātrasya kṛtvā samayamuttamam||1.37.24|| dadu: putro'yamasmākṃ sarvāsāmiti niścitā:|

Translation

ता: those Krittikas, निश्चिता: regarded within themselves, अयम् this boy, अस्माकम् सर्वासाम् for all of us, पुत्र: son, उत्तमम् great, समयम् an agreement, कृत्वा having made, जातमात्रस्य just then born boy, क्षीरम् breast milk, ददु: gave.

Meaning

Those krittikas, having decided among themselves and having made an agreement with the gods saying 'This boy shall become a son to all of us' fed the newborn with their milk (breast milk).

BK-37-25Bala Kanda 37.25

ततस्तु देवता स्सर्वा: कार्तिकेय इति ब्रुवन्।।1.37.25।। पुत्रस्त्रैलोक्यविख्यातो भविष्यति न संशय:।4

tatastu devatā ssarvā: kārtikeya iti bruvan||1.37.25|| putrastrailokyavikhyāto bhaviṣyati na sṃśaya:|4

Translation

तत: thereafter, सर्वा: all, देवता: devatas, पुत्र: son, कार्तिकेय: इति as Karthikeya, son of Krittikas, त्रैलोक्यविख्यात: renowned in three worlds, भविष्यति shall become, संशय: न no doubt, इति ब्रुवन् thus spoke.

Meaning

Thereafter, all the gods said, 'This son shall become renowned in the three worlds as Karttikeya, (son of krittikas). There is no doubt '.

BK-37-26Bala Kanda 37.26

तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स्कन्नं गर्भपरिस्रवे।।1.37.26।। स्नापयन् परया लक्ष्म्या दीप्यमानं यथानलम्।

teṣāṃ tadvacanṃ śrutvā skannṃ garbhaparisrave||1.37.26|| snāpayan parayā lakṣmyā dīpyamānṃ yathānalam|

Translation

तेषाम् of those devatas', तत् वचनम् those words, श्रुत्वा having heard, गर्भपरिस्रवे when the embryo was flowing from womb, स्कन्नम् descended, अनलम् यथा like fire, परया with great, लक्ष्म्या beauty, दीप्यमानम् shining, स्नापयन् bathed.

Meaning

Hearing the words of the gods, the krittikas bathed the baby that descended from the womb of Ganga resembling flaming fire and shining with great beauty.

BK-37-27Bala Kanda 37.27

स्कन्द इत्यब्रुवन् देवा: स्कन्नं गर्भपरिस्रवात्।।1.37.27।। कार्तिकेयं महाभागं काकुत्स्थ ज्वलनोपमम्।

skanda ityabruvan devā: skannṃ garbhaparisravāt||1.37.27|| kārtikeyṃ mahābhāgṃ kākutstha jvalanopamam|

Translation

काकुत्स्थ O Rama, ज्वलनोपमम् equal to flaming fire, महाभागम् very fortunate, गर्भपरिस्रवात् embryo from womb, स्कन्नम् descended, कार्तिकेयम् Karthikeya, स्कन्द: इति will be known as Skanda, देवा: devatas, अब्रुवन् spoke.

Meaning

O scion of the Kakusthas, Karttikeya lustrous like flaming fire, was very fortunate Descended from the womb of the Ganga, he is named Skanda by the gods.

BK-37-28Bala Kanda 37.28

प्रादुर्भूतं तत: क्षीरं कृत्तिकानामनुत्तमम् ।।1.37.28।। षण्णां षडाननो भूत्वा जग्राह स्तनजं पय:।

prādurbhūtṃ tata: kṣīrṃ kṛttikānāmanuttamam ||1.37.28|| ṣaṇṇāṃ ṣaḍānano bhūtvā jagrāha stanajṃ paya:|

Translation

तत: then, कृत्तिकानाम् of Krittikas, अनुत्तमम् very best, क्षीरम् milk, प्रादुर्भूतम् formed, षण्णाम् of six of them, स्तनजम् coming from their breasts, पय: milk, षडानन: six faces Skanda, भूत्वा having assumed, जग्राह received.

Meaning

Then excellent milk surged in the breasts of krittikas. Assuming six mouths, he sucked the milk.

BK-37-29Bala Kanda 37.29

गृहीत्वा क्षीरमेकाह्ना सुकुमारवपुस्तदा।।1.37.29।। अजयत्स्वेन वीर्येण दैत्यसेनागणान् विभु:।

gṛhītvā kṣīramekāhnā sukumāravapustadā||1.37.29|| ajayatsvena vīryeṇa daityasenāgaṇān vibhu:|

Translation

विभु: the capable boy, एकाह्ना for one day only, क्षीरम् milk, गृहीत्वा having received, तदा then, सुकुमारवपु: with tender body, स्वेन वीर्येण by his inborn prowess, दैत्यसेनागणान् hosts of demons, अजयत् vanquished.

Meaning

Drinking milk just for a day and with a body still tender he could vanquish hosts of demons by his inborn prowess so capable be was

BK-37-30Bala Kanda 37.30

सुरसेनागणपतिं ततस्तमतुलद्युतिम्।।1.37.30।। अभ्यषिञ्चन् सुरगणा स्समेत्याग्निपुरोगमा:।

surasenāgaṇapatiṃ tatastamatuladyutim||1.37.30|| abhyaṣiñcan suragaṇā ssametyāgnipurogamā:|

Translation

तत: then, अग्निपुरोगमा: with firegod in the forefront, सुरगणा: devatas, समेत्य having assembled, अतुलद्युतिम् a hero of unsurpassed effulgence, तम् him, सुरसेनागणपतिम् commander of devata forces, अभ्यषिञ्चन् installed.

Meaning

With the Firegod in the forefront, all the gods assembled and installed Karttikeya, shining on unsurpassed brilliant, as commander of the gods forces.

BK-37-31Bala Kanda 37.31

एष ते राम गङ्गाया विस्तरोऽभिहितो मया।।1.37.31।। कुमारसम्भवश्चैव धन्य: पुण्यस्तथैव च।

eṣa te rāma gaṅgāyā vistaro'bhihito mayā||1.37.31|| kumārasambhavaścaiva dhanya: puṇyastathaiva ca|

Translation

राम O Rama, मया by me, ते to you,गङ्गाया: Ganga's, एष: this story, विस्तर: in detail, तथैव and, धन्य: a fortunate being, पुण्य: auspiciousness, कुमारसम्भवश्चैव birth of Kumara, अभिहित: has been told.

Meaning

"O Rama this story of Ganga and that of the birth of Kumara, who was fortunate and auspicious, has been related to you in detail.

BK-37-32Bala Kanda 37.32

भक्तश्च य: कार्तिकेये काकुत्स्थ भुवि मानवः। आयुष्मान् पुत्रपौत्रैश्च स्कन्दसालोक्यतां व्रजेत्।।1.37.32।।

bhaktaśca ya: kārtikeye kākutstha bhuvi mānavḥ| āyuṣmān putrapautraiśca skandasālokyatāṃ vrajet||1.37.32||

Translation

काकुत्स्थ O Raghava, भुवि on this earth, य: मानवः who so ever, कार्तिकेये in Kartikeya, भक्त: च is a devotee, आयुष्मान् with long life, पुत्रपौत्रै: with sons and grand sons, स्कन्दसालोक्यताम् being in the same world of Skanda, व्रजेत् obtain.

Meaning

O son of the Kakusthas whosoever reveres Kartikeya on this earth with devotion and faith, shall have a long life, sons and grandsons and after death will reach the world of Skanda". इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डेण्डे सप्तत्रिंशस्सर्ग:।। Thus ends the thirtyseventh sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
