BK-36-1Bala Kanda 36.1

उक्तवाक्ये मुनौ तस्मिन्नुभौ राघवलक्ष्मणौ। प्रतिनन्द्य कथां वीरावूचतुर्मुनिपुङ्गवम्।।1.36.1।।

uktavākye munau tasminnubhau rāghavalakṣmaṇau| pratinandya kathāṃ vīrāvūcaturmunipuṅgavam||1.36.1||

Translation

तस्मिन् मुनौ when that ascetic, उक्तवाक्ये had spoken the words, वीरौ two heroes, राघवलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, उभौ both, कथाम् story, प्रतिनन्द्य enjoying, मुनिपुङ्गवम् preeminent ascetic, ऊचतु: uttered.

Meaning

While Viswamitra preeminent ascetic among the sages was telling the story (of Ganga) to the heroic Rama and Lakshmana, they extolled it and enquired:

BK-36-2Bala Kanda 36.2

धर्मयुक्तमिदं ब्रह्मन् कथितं परमं त्वया । दुहितुश्शैलराजस्य ज्येष्ठाया वक्तुमर्हसि।।1.36.2।। विस्तरं विस्तरज्ञोऽसि दिव्यमानुषसम्भवम्।

dharmayuktamidṃ brahman kathitṃ paramṃ tvayā | duhituśśailarājasya jyeṣṭhāyā vaktumarhasi||1.36.2|| vistarṃ vistarajño'si divyamānuṣasambhavam|

Translation

ब्रह्मन् O Divine sage, धर्मयुक्तम् endowed with righteousness, परमम् supreme, इदम् this story, त्वया by you, कथितम् has been narrated, शैलराजस्य king of mountains Himavan's, ज्येष्ठाया: of the eldest, दुहितु: daughter's, दिव्यमानुषसम्भवम् happened in the celestial and mortal world, विस्तरम् detailed story, वक्तुम् to tell, अर्हसि it is worthy of you, विस्तरज्ञ: असि you are conversant with the details.

Meaning

"O Brahman sage, this excellent story set in righteousness has been narrated by you. Since you are conversant with the details, you can befittingly tell the story in detail, pertaining to the eldest daughter of king of the mountains and the events that happened in the celestial and mortal worlds

BK-36-3-4Bala Kanda 36.3–4 (युग्मम्)

त्रीन् पथो हेतुना केन प्लावयेल्लोकपावनी।।1.36.3।। कथं गङ्गा त्रिपथगा विश्रुता सरिदुत्तमा। त्रिषु लोकेषु धर्मज्ञ कर्मभि: कैस्समन्विता।।1.36.4।।

trīn patho hetunā kena plāvayellokapāvanī||1.36.3|| kathṃ gaṅgā tripathagā viśrutā sariduttamā| triṣu lokeṣu dharmajña karmabhi: kaissamanvitā||1.36.4||

Translation

लोकपावनी purifying the worlds, केन हेतुना for what reason, त्रीन् three, पथ: paths, प्लावयेत् should be overflowing with waters? धर्मज्ञ O Knower of righteousness, त्रिपथगा Tripathaga (threeway flowing), गङ्गा Ganga, कै: by which, कर्मभि: actions, अन्विता endowed with, त्रिषु लोकेषु in three worlds, सरिदुत्तमा excellent among rivers, विश्रुता well known.

Meaning

Why does Ganga, the purifier of the worlds overflow the three paths (worlds)? O knower of dharma what deed made, Tripathaga (flowing in three directions) Ganga wellknown in the three worlds as the best (holiest) of all rivers"?

BK-36-5Bala Kanda 36.5

तथा ब्रुवति काकुत्स्थे विश्वामित्रस्तपोधन:। निखिलेन कथां सर्वामृषिमध्ये न्यवेदयत्।।1.36.5।।

tathā bruvati kākutsthe viśvāmitrastapodhana:| nikhilena kathāṃ sarvāmṛṣimadhye nyavedayat||1.36.5||

Translation

काकुत्स्थे when Rama, तथा ब्रुवति was thus speaking, तपोधन: sage with asceticism as his wealth, सर्वाम् entire, कथाम् story, निखिलेन completely, ऋषिमध्ये amidst sages, न्यवेदयत् revealed.

Meaning

Having heard the words of the son of the Kakusthas, Viswamitra, vested with the wealth of asceticism, revealed the complete story in detail in the presence of the sages.

BK-36-6Bala Kanda 36.6

पुरा राम कृतोद्वाहो नीलकण्ठो महातपा:। दृष्ट्वा च स्पृहया देवीं मैथुनायोपचक्रमे।।1.36.6।।

purā rāma kṛtodvāho nīlakaṇṭho mahātapā:| dṛṣṭvā ca spṛhayā devīṃ maithunāyopacakrame||1.36.6||

Translation

राम O Rama, पुरा in ancient times, कृतोद्वाह: got married, महातपा: mighty ascetic, नीलकण्ठ: lord Siva, देवीम् goddess, Uma, दृष्ट्वा having seen, स्पृहया with intense desire, मैथुनाय for enjoying marital bliss, उपचक्रमे commenced.

Meaning

"O Rama, in ancient times, great ascetic the blueneck Lord Siva got married to goddess Uma charmed with her beauty he indulged in sexual enjoyment with intense passion.

BK-36-7Bala Kanda 36.7

शितिकण्ठस्य देवस्य दिव्यं वर्षशतं गतम्। न चापि तनयो राम तस्यामासीत् परन्तप।।1.36.7।।

śitikaṇṭhasya devasya divyṃ varṣaśatṃ gatam| na cāpi tanayo rāma tasyāmāsīt parantapa||1.36.7||

Translation

परन्तप O Tormentor of enemies, राम O Rama, देवस्य of the lord, शितिकण्ठस्य Siva's, दिव्यम् celestial, वर्षशतम् hundred years, गतम् was over, अपि च even then, तस्याम् in her (the womb of goddess Parvati), तनय: son, न आसीत् was not born.

Meaning

O Rama, tormentor of enemies, while Lord Siva was thus absorbed in sexual enjoyment, a hundred (celestial) years passed but no son was born to them.

BK-36-8Bala Kanda 36.8

ततो देवास्समुद्विग्ना: पितामहपुरोगमा:। यदिहोत्पद्यते भूतं कस्तत्प्रतिसहिष्यते।।1.36.8।।

tato devāssamudvignā: pitāmahapurogamā:| yadihotpadyate bhūtṃ kastatpratisahiṣyate||1.36.8||

Translation

तत: then, पितामहपुरोगमा: with Brahma in the forefront, देवा: devatas, इह here, now in this goddess, यत् which, भूतम् offspring, उत्पद्यते will be born, तत् that, क: who, प्रतिसहिष्यते will be able to bear, समुद्विग्ना: were exceedingly alarmed.

Meaning

"Then the devatas led by Brahma were exceedingly alarmed. 'Who will be able to bear the power of the offspring if it is born here and now', they reflected.

BK-36-9Bala Kanda 36.9

अभिगम्य सुरास्सर्वे प्रणिपत्येदमब्रुवन्। देव देव महादेव लोकस्यास्य हिते रत ।।1.36.9।। सुराणां प्रणिपातेन प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि।

abhigamya surāssarve praṇipatyedamabruvan| deva deva mahādeva lokasyāsya hite rata ||1.36.9|| surāṇāṃ praṇipātena prasādṃ kartumarhasi|

Translation

सुरा: devatas, सर्वे all, अभिगम्य approaching Siva, प्रणिपत्य paying obeisance, इदम् these words, अब्रुवन् spoke, देवदेव O God of devatas, अस्य लोकस्य for this world, हिते रत engaged in doing welfare of all, महादेव O Mahadeva, सुराणाम् for celestials, प्रणिपातेन with salutations, प्रसादम् mercy, कर्तुम् अर्हसि capable of doing it.

Meaning

All devatas approached Siva and paying their obeisance said, "O God of the gods engaged in the welfare of all O Mahadeva accept our salutations Be king which you can be (if you will)".

BK-36-10-11Bala Kanda 36.10–11 (युग्मम्)

न लोका धारयिष्यन्ति तव तेजस्सुरोत्तम ।।1.36.10।। ब्राह्मेण तपसा युक्तो देव्या सह तपश्चर। त्रैलोक्यहितकामार्थं तेजस्तेजसि धारय ।।1.36.11।।

na lokā dhārayiṣyanti tava tejassurottama ||1.36.10|| brāhmeṇa tapasā yukto devyā saha tapaścara| trailokyahitakāmārthṃ tejastejasi dhāraya ||1.36.11||

Translation

सुरोत्तम O Best among gods, तव your, तेज: energy, लोका: worlds, न धारयिष्यन्ति cannot contain, ब्राह्मेण in conformity vedas, तपसा by yogic penance, युक्त: endowed with, देव्या सह in the company with Parvati, तप: austerities, चर engage yourself, त्रैलोक्यहितकामार्थम् with the intention of doing welfare for three worlds, तेज: energy, तेजसि in your energy, धारय retain.

Meaning

"O best among the gods, the worlds cannot contain your energy (the son born of your energy) You may engage yourself in penance in the company of Uma in conformity with the Vedas. Retain your energy in your body for the welfare of the three worlds."

BK-36-12Bala Kanda 36.12

देवतानां वचश्श्रुत्वा सर्वलोकमहेश्वर:। बाढमित्यब्रवीत्सर्वान्पुनश्चैवमुवाच ह ।।1.36.12।।

devatānāṃ vacaśśrutvā sarvalokamaheśvara:| bāḍhamityabravītsarvānpunaścaivamuvāca ha ||1.36.12||

Translation

सर्वलोकमहेश्वर: ruler of all the worlds, देवतानाम् devata's, वच: words, श्रुत्वा having heard, बाढम् "Be it so", इति thus, अब्रवीत् said, पुनश्च again, एवम् these words, उवाच ह spoke.

Meaning

Mahadeva, ruler of the all the worlds, having heard the words of devatas, said "Be it so" Further:

BK-36-13Bala Kanda 36.13

धारयिष्याम्यहं तेजस्तेजस्येव सहोमया। त्रिदशा: पृथिवी चैव निर्वाणमधिगच्छतु।।1.36.13।।

dhārayiṣyāmyahṃ tejastejasyeva sahomayā| tridaśā: pṛthivī caiva nirvāṇamadhigacchatu||1.36.13||

Translation

उमया सह together with Uma, अहम् I, तेज: vital fluid, तेजस्येव in my energy (body), धारयिष्यामि I shall preserve, त्रिदशा: devatas, पृथिवी चैव earth also, निर्वाणम् peace, अधिगच्छतु obtain.

Meaning

" "Together with Uma I will preserve the semen in my body thereby the devatas and also the earth will have peace.

BK-36-14Bala Kanda 36.14

यदिदं क्षुभितं स्थानान्मम तेजो ह्यनुत्तमम्। धारयिष्यति कस्तन्मे ब्रुवन्तु सुरसत्तमा:।।1.36.14।।

yadidṃ kṣubhitṃ sthānānmama tejo hyanuttamam| dhārayiṣyati kastanme bruvantu surasattamā:||1.36.14||

Translation

मम my , अनुत्तमम् excellent, यत् इदम् तेज: if this vital fluid, स्थानात् from its own place, क्षुभितम् is shaken, तत् then, क: who, धारयिष्यति will contain? सुरसत्तमा: best of devatas, मे to me, ब्रुवन्तु tell.

Meaning

"Who will contain this exceptional vital fluid of mine if shaken from its own place? O best of devatas tell me".

BK-36-15Bala Kanda 36.15

एवमुक्तास्सुरास्सर्वे प्रत्यूचुर्वृषभध्वजम्। यत्तेज: क्षुभितं ह्येतत्तद्धरा धारयिष्यति।।1.36.15।।

evamuktāssurāssarve pratyūcurvṛṣabhadhvajam| yatteja: kṣubhitṃ hyetattaddharā dhārayiṣyati||1.36.15||

Translation

एवम् उक्ता: having been addressed in this way by Iswara, सुरा: सर्वे all devatas, वृषभध्वजम् having flagstaff with bull as his symbol (Iswara), प्रत्यूचु: replied, यत् तेज: that vital fluid, क्षुभितम् disturbed, एतत् thist one, धरा earth, धारयिष्यति will contain.

Meaning

Thus questioned, all the devatas replied to the bearer of the flag with bull as its symbol (Siva), saying, "The earth will contain the disturbed vital fluid".

BK-36-16Bala Kanda 36.16

एवमुक्तस्सुरपति: प्रमुमोच महीतले। तेजसा पृथिवी येन व्याप्ता सगिरिकानना।।1.36.16।।

evamuktassurapati: pramumoca mahītale| tejasā pṛthivī yena vyāptā sagirikānanā||1.36.16||

Translation

एवम् उक्त: having been spoken in this way by devatas, सुरपति: lord of devatas, येन तेजसा by which vital fluid, सगिरिकानना including mountains, forests, पृथिवी earth, व्याप्ता was pervaded, महीतले on the earth, प्रमुमोच released.

Meaning

Thus replied by the devatas, the god of the gods released his vital fluid on earth. It pervaded the entire earth including mountains and forests.

BK-36-17Bala Kanda 36.17

ततो देवा: पुनरिदमूचुश्चाथ हुताशनम्। प्रविश त्वं महातेजो रौद्रं वायुसमन्वित:।।1.36.17।।

tato devā: punaridamūcuścātha hutāśanam| praviśa tvṃ mahātejo raudrṃ vāyusamanvita:||1.36.17||

Translation

तत: then, अथ thereafter, देवा: devatas, पुन: again, हुताशनम् fire deity, इदम् these words, ऊचु: spoke, त्वम् you, वायुसमन्वित: followed by wind god, रौद्रम् relating to Rudra, महातेज: mighty energy (creative power), प्रविश enter.

Meaning

Then, the devatas said to the firegod, "Enter this energy (creative power) related to Rudra followed by the windgod".

BK-36-18Bala Kanda 36.18

तदग्निना पुनर्व्याप्तं सञ्जातश्श्वेतपर्वत:। दिव्यं शरवणं चैव पावकादित्यसन्निभम्।।1.36.18।। यत्र जातो महातेजा: कार्तिकेयोऽग्निसम्भव:।

tadagninā punarvyāptṃ sañjātaśśvetaparvata:| divyṃ śaravaṇṃ caiva pāvakādityasannibham||1.36.18|| yatra jāto mahātejā: kārtikeyo'gnisambhava:|

Translation

अग्निना by fire, व्याप्तम् pervaded, तत् that energy, पुन: again, श्वेतपर्वत: celestial white mountain, सञ्जात: became, पावकादित्यसन्निभम् resplendent as fire or Sun, दिव्यम् celestial, शरवणं चैव became forest of reeds, यत्र in which, महातेजा: glorious, अग्निसम्भव: born from fire, कार्तिकेय: son of Krittika, Kartikeya, जात: was born.

Meaning

That energy pervaded by fire was transformed into the White Mountain. It turned the forest of reeds (Saravana) (blazing) like the fire or the Sun. From that fire was born the glorious Kartikeya.

BK-36-19Bala Kanda 36.19

अथोमां च शिवं चैव देवास्सर्षिगणास्तदा। पूजयामासुरत्यर्थं सुप्रीतमनसस्तत:।।1.36.19।।

athomāṃ ca śivṃ caiva devāssarṣigaṇāstadā| pūjayāmāsuratyarthṃ suprītamanasastata:||1.36.19||

Translation

अथ thereafter, सर्षिगणा: with multitude of saints, देवा: devatas, तत: for that event, सुप्रीतमनस: with highly pleased minds, तदा then, उमां च goddess Uma, शिवं चैव Shiva, अत्यर्थम् with great desire, पूजयामासु: worshipped.

Meaning

Thereafter highly pleased with the event the devatas along with the saints worshipped Siva and goddess Uma with deep devotion.

BK-36-20Bala Kanda 36.20

अथ शैलसुता राम त्रिदशानिदमब्रवीत्। समन्युरशपत्सर्वान् क्रोधसंरक्तलोचना।।1.36.20।।

atha śailasutā rāma tridaśānidamabravīt| samanyuraśapatsarvān krodhasṃraktalocanā||1.36.20||

Translation

राम Rama, अथ thereafter, शैलसुता daughter of mountain Himavan, समन्यु: with anger, त्रिदशान् addressing devatas, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke, क्रोधसंरक्तलोचना with reddened eyes because of anger, सर्वान् all of them, अशपत् cursed.

Meaning

"Rama thereafter Uma, daughter of the mountain (Himavan) with her eyes red with anger cursed all of them:

BK-36-21Bala Kanda 36.21

यस्मान्निवारिता चैव सङ्गति: पुत्रकाम्यया। अपत्यं स्वेषु दारेषु तस्मान्नोत्पादयिष्यथ।।1.36.21।।

yasmānnivāritā caiva saṅgati: putrakāmyayā| apatyṃ sveṣu dāreṣu tasmānnotpādayiṣyatha||1.36.21||

Translation

यस्मात् for the reason, पुत्रकाम्यया with a desire to bear son, सङ्गति: union with Mahadeva, निवारिता is prevented, तस्मात् for that reason, स्वेषु in your, दारेषु wives, अपत्यम् progeny, नोत्पादयिष्यथ you will not produce.

BK-36-22Bala Kanda 36.22

अद्यप्रभृति युष्माकमप्रजास्सन्तु पत्नय:।।1.36.22।। एवमुक्त्वासुरान् सर्वान् शशाप पृथिवीमपि।

adyaprabhṛti yuṣmākamaprajāssantu patnaya:||1.36.22|| evamuktvāsurān sarvān śaśāpa pṛthivīmapi|

Translation

अद्यप्रभृति from today onwards, युष्माकम् your, पत्नय: wives, अप्रजा: childless, सन्तु may become, सर्वान् all, सुरान् devatas, एवम् in this way, उत्त्वा having spoken, पृथिवीमपि Earth also, शशाप cursed.

Meaning

"From today onwards your wives will become childless" cursed Uma. The devatas were cursed this Even the earth:

BK-36-23-24Bala Kanda 36.23–24 (युग्मम्)

अवने नैकरूपा त्वं बहुभार्या भविष्यसि।।1.36.23।। न च पुत्रकृतां प्रीतिं मत्क्रोधकलुषीकृता । प्राप्स्यसि त्वं सुदुर्मेधे मम पुत्रमनिच्छती।।1.36.24।।

avane naikarūpā tvṃ bahubhāryā bhaviṣyasi||1.36.23|| na ca putrakṛtāṃ prītiṃ matkrodhakaluṣīkṛtā | prāpsyasi tvṃ sudurmedhe mama putramanicchatī||1.36.24||

Translation

अवने O Earth, त्वम् you, नैकरूपा do not assume one single form, बहुभार्या as wife of many masters, भविष्यसि you will become, सुदुर्मेधे O evil minded one, मम for me, पुत्रम् son, अनिच्छती is not to your liking, त्वम् you, मत्क्रोधकलुषीकृता fouled as as result of my anger, पुत्रकृताम् on account of a son, प्रीतिं च pleasure also, न प्राप्स्यसि you will not obtain.

Meaning

"O Earth you will assume many forms and become wife of many masters. O evilminded one, you did not want me to bear a son. Having been fouled as a result of my anger, you will not have the pleasure of having a son, cursed Uma.

BK-36-25Bala Kanda 36.25

तान् सर्वान् व्रीडितान् दृष्ट्वा सुरान्सुरपतिस्तदा। गमनायोपचक्राम दिशं वरुणपालिताम्।।1.36.25।।

tān sarvān vrīḍitān dṛṣṭvā surānsurapatistadā| gamanāyopacakrāma diśṃ varuṇapālitām||1.36.25||

Translation

सुरपति: Mahesvara, तदा then, व्रीडितान् filled with humility, तान् सर्वान् all those, सुरान् devatas, दृष्ट्वा having seen, वरुणपालिताम् presided over by Varuna (Western direction), दिशम् direction, गमनाय to depart, उपचक्राम commenced.

Meaning

"The god of the gods (Mahesvara), seeing all the devatas humiliated began to depart in the westerly direction presided over by Varuna.

BK-36-26Bala Kanda 36.26

स गत्वा तप आतिष्ठत्पार्श्वे तस्योत्तरे गिरौ। हिमवत्प्रभवे शृङ्गे सह देव्या महेश्वर:।।1.36.26।।

sa gatvā tapa ātiṣṭhatpārśve tasyottare girau| himavatprabhave śṛṅge saha devyā maheśvara:||1.36.26||

Translation

महेश्वर: Mahesvara, गिरौ गत्वा having gone to the (himavat) mountain, तस्य (गिरेः) of that Himavat mountain's, उत्तरे in the northern, पार्श्वे side, हिमवत्प्रभवे born in the Himavat mountain, शृङ्गे on a peak, देव्या सह along with goddess Uma, तप: yogic practices, अतिष्ठत् performed.

Meaning

"Mahesvara along with goddess Uma, went north of the Himavat mountain and performed penance on a peak.

BK-36-27Bala Kanda 36.27

एष ते विस्तरो राम शैलपुत्र्या निवेदित:। गङ्गाया: प्रभवं चैव शृणु मे सहलक्ष्मण:।।1.36.27।।

eṣa te vistaro rāma śailaputryā nivedita:| gaṅgāyā: prabhavṃ caiva śṛṇu me sahalakṣmaṇa:||1.36.27||

Translation

राम O Rama, शैलपुत्र्या: relating to the daughter of Himavat mountain, Uma, एष: विस्तर: this extensive story, ते to you, (कथित: has been narrated), गङ्गाया: च relating to Ganga, प्रभवम् her birth, निवेदित: described, सह लक्ष्मण: together with Lakshmana, श्रुणु listen.

Meaning

"O Rama this story of the daughter of the mountain has been narrated to you. Now listen with Lakshmana the tale of the birth of Ganga": इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे षट्त्रिंशस्सर्ग:।। Thus ends the thirtysixth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
