AK-8-1Ayodhya Kanda 8.1

मन्थरा त्वभ्यसूयैनामुत्सृज्याभरणं च तत्। उवाचेदं ततो वाक्यं कोपदुःखसमन्विता।।2.8.1।।

mantharā tvabhyasūyaināmutsṛjyābharaṇṃ ca tat| uvācedṃ tato vākyṃ kopaduḥkhasamanvitā||2.8.1||

Translation

मन्थरा तु as for Manthara, एनाम् about her, अभ्यसूय having been disgusted, कोपदु:ख समन्विता filled with rage and sorrow, तत् that, आभरणम् ornament, उत्सृज्य having discarded, तत: after that, इदम् वाक्यं this word, उवाच said.

Meaning

Annoyed with Kaikeyi and filled with rage and sorrow, Manthara discarded the ornament (gifted to her) and said these words:

AK-8-2Ayodhya Kanda 8.2

हर्षं किमिदमस्थाने कृतवत्यसि बालिशे। शोकसागरमध्यस्थमात्मानं नावबुध्यसे।।2.8.2।।

harṣṃ kimidamasthāne kṛtavatyasi bāliśe| śokasāgaramadhyasthamātmānṃ nāvabudhyase||2.8.2||

Translation

बालिशे O foolish one, अस्थाने misplaced, हर्षम् happiness, कृतवती असि you are displaying, इदम् this one, किम् why, शोकसागरमध्यस्थम् in the midst of the ocean of sorrow, आत्मानम् about yourself, नावबुध्यसे do not know.

Meaning

O foolish woman why do you display this misplaced happiness, little realising that you are in the midst of an ocean of sorrow?

AK-8-3Ayodhya Kanda 8.3

मनसा प्रहसामि त्वां देवि दुःखार्दिता सती। यच्छोचितव्ये हृष्टाऽसि प्राप्येदं व्यसनं महत्।।2.8.3।।

manasā prahasāmi tvāṃ devi duḥkhārditā satī| yacchocitavye hṛṣṭā'si prāpyedṃ vyasanṃ mahat||2.8.3||

Translation

देवि O queen, महत् great, इदम् this, व्यसनम् misfortune, प्राप्य having obtained, शोचितव्ये (at a time) one should feel sad, यत् since, हृष्टा असि you are rejoicing, दु:खार्दिता सती although afflicted with grief, त्वाम् about you, मनसा in my mind, प्रहसामि I am laughing.

Meaning

O queen at a time when this great misfortune has befallen you, you are rejoicing instead of feeling miserable. I am indeed laughing at you at heart.

AK-8-4Ayodhya Kanda 8.4

शोचामि दुर्मतित्वं ते का हि प्राज्ञा प्रहर्षयेत्। अरेस्सपत्नीपुत्रस्य वृद्धिं मृत्योरिवागताम्।।2.8.4।।

śocāmi durmatitvṃ te kā hi prājñā praharṣayet| aressapatnīputrasya vṛddhiṃ mṛtyorivāgatām||2.8.4||

Translation

ते you, दुर्मतित्वम् false notion, शोचामि I feel pity, प्राज्ञा any wise woman, का who, अरे: enemy's, सपत्नी पुत्रस्य of cowife's son, वृद्धिम् prosperity, आगताम् having arrived, मृत्योरिव like death, प्रहर्षयेत् would rejoice.

Meaning

I pity your false notion. Will any wise woman rejoice at the prosperity of the son of a cowife who is like an enemy? This is like (courting) death.

AK-8-5Ayodhya Kanda 8.5

भरतादेव रामस्य राज्यसाधारणाद्भयम्। तद्विचिन्त्य विषण्णाऽस्मि भयं भीताऽद्धि जायते।।2.8.5।।

bharatādeva rāmasya rājyasādhāraṇādbhayam| tadvicintya viṣaṇṇā'smi bhayṃ bhītā'ddhi jāyate||2.8.5||

Translation

रामस्य for Rama, राज्यसाधारणात् having equal claim to rule the kingdom, भरतादेव from Bharata only, भयम् fear, तत् that matter, विचिन्त्य having thought over, विषण्णा अस्मि I am dejected, भीतात् from the person who fears, भयम् fear, जायते हि will be born.

Meaning

Since Bharata and Rama have equal claim to the kingdom, Bharata is a source of fear for Rama. Having thought over this matter, I am dejected. Danger springs from one who is in fear.

AK-8-6Ayodhya Kanda 8.6

लक्ष्मणो हि महेष्वासो रामं सर्वात्मना गतः। शत्रुघ्नश्चापि भरतं काकुत्स्थं लक्ष्मणो यथा।।2.8.6।।

lakṣmaṇo hi maheṣvāso rāmṃ sarvātmanā gatḥ| śatrughnaścāpi bharatṃ kākutsthṃ lakṣmaṇo yathā||2.8.6||

Translation

महेष्वास: one holding a great bow, लक्ष्मण: Lakshmana, सर्वात्मना with all his heart, रामम् of Rama, गत: has taken refuge, शत्रुघ्न: च अपि and Satrughna also, लक्ष्मण: Lakshmana, काकुत्स्थं यथा like (Rama) a descendant of Kakutstha dynasty, भरतम् (has reached) Bharata.

Meaning

Lakshmana who wields a great bow has taken refuge with all his heart in Rama a descendant of Kakutstha dynasty. So does Satrughna in Bharata.

AK-8-7Ayodhya Kanda 8.7

प्रत्यासन्नक्रमेणापि भरतस्यैव भामिनि। राज्यक्रमो विप्रकृष्टस्तयोस्तावत्कनीयसोः।।2.8.7।।

pratyāsannakrameṇāpi bharatasyaiva bhāmini| rājyakramo viprakṛṣṭastayostāvatkanīyasoḥ||2.8.7||

Translation

भामिनि O beautiful woman, प्रत्यासन्नक्रमेणापि in order of birth also, राज्यक्रम: succession to the kingdom, भरतस्यैव is for Bharata only, कनीयसो: younger ones, तयो: तावत् for both of them, विप्रकृष्ट: is remote.

Meaning

O beautiful lady in order of birth, too, Bharata's right to the throne is just next (to Rama's). While being younger, the chances of the other two (Lakshmana and Satrughna) are remote.

AK-8-8Ayodhya Kanda 8.8

विदुषः क्षत्रचारित्रे प्राज्ञस्य प्राप्तकारिणः। भयात्प्रवेपे रामस्य चिन्तयन्ती तवात्मजम्।।2.8.8।।

viduṣḥ kṣatracāritre prājñasya prāptakāriṇḥ| bhayātpravepe rāmasya cintayantī tavātmajam||2.8.8||

Translation

विदुष: of the learned, क्षत्रचारित्रे in the duties of a kshatriya, प्राज्ञस्य of the competent, प्राप्तकारिण: one who does what is right at appropriate time, भयात् out of fear, तव आत्मजम् about your son, चिन्तयन्ती while reflecting, प्रवेपे I am trembling.

Meaning

Rama is learned in the duties of a kshatriya. He is wise enough to do what he should at the appropriate time. While reflecting the fate of your son, I am trembling with fear.

AK-8-9Ayodhya Kanda 8.9

सुभगा खलु कौशल्या यस्याः पुत्रोऽभिषेक्ष्यते। यौवराज्येन महता श्वः पुष्येण द्विजोत्तमैः।।2.8.9।।

subhagā khalu kauśalyā yasyāḥ putro'bhiṣekṣyate| yauvarājyena mahatā śvḥ puṣyeṇa dvijottamaiḥ||2.8.9||

Translation

यस्या: whose (Kausalya's), पुत्र: son, श्व: tomorrow, पुष्येण under Pushya star, द्विजोत्तमै: by eminent brahmins, महता great, यौवराज्येन as heirapparent, अभिषेक्ष्यते is going to be coronated, कौशल्या such Kausalya, सुभगा खलु is fortunate indeed.

Meaning

Kausalya whose son is going to be coronated as heirapparent by eminent brahmins under Pushya star tomorrow is fortunate, indeed.

AK-8-10Ayodhya Kanda 8.10

प्राप्तां सुमहतीं प्रीतिं प्रतीतां तां हतद्विषम्। उपस्थास्यसि कौसल्यां दासीव त्त्वं कृताञ्जलिः।।2.8.10।।

prāptāṃ sumahatīṃ prītiṃ pratītāṃ tāṃ hatadviṣam| upasthāsyasi kausalyāṃ dāsīva ttvṃ kṛtāñjaliḥ||2.8.10||

Translation

सुमहतीम् very great, प्रीतिम् delight, प्राप्ताम् having obtained, प्रतीताम् renowned, हतद्विषम् with her enemies destroyed, तां कौशल्याम् that Kausalya, त्वम् you, दासीवत् like an attendant, कृताञ्जलि: with folded palms, उपस्थास्यसि will serve.

Meaning

With folded palms like an attendant, you will have to serve that renowned Kausalya who is greatlly delighted by getting rid of her enemies.

AK-8-11Ayodhya Kanda 8.11

एवं चेत्त्वं सहास्माभिस्तस्याः प्रेष्या भविष्यसि। पुत्रश्च तव रामस्य प्रेष्यभावं गमिष्यति।।2.8.11।।

evṃ cettvṃ sahāsmābhistasyāḥ preṣyā bhaviṣyasi| putraśca tava rāmasya preṣyabhāvṃ gamiṣyati||2.8.11||

Translation

एवम् in this way, त्वम् you, अस्माभि: सह along with us, तस्या: for her, प्रेष्या an attendant, भविष्यसि if you become, तव your, पुत्रश्च son also, रामस्य to Rama, प्रेष्यभावम् slavishness, गमिष्यति will attain.

Meaning

If you thus become her attendant along with us, your son will also develop slavishness towards Rama.

AK-8-12Ayodhya Kanda 8.12

हृष्टाः खलु भविष्यन्ति रामस्य परमास्स्त्रियः। अप्रहृष्टा भविष्यन्ति स्नुषास्ते भरतक्षये।।2.8.12।।

hṛṣṭāḥ khalu bhaviṣyanti rāmasya paramāsstriyḥ| aprahṛṣṭā bhaviṣyanti snuṣāste bharatakṣaye||2.8.12||

Translation

रामस्य Rama's, परमा: स्त्रिय: all the women, हृष्टा: delighted, भविष्यन्ति खलु will become indeed, भरतक्षये with the decline of Bharata, ते your, स्नुषा: daughtersinlaw, अप्रहृष्टा: deprived of happiness, भविष्यन्ति will become.

Meaning

All the women of Rama's (palace) will be delighted indeed. With the decline of Bharata, your daughtersinlaw will be deprived of all happiness.

AK-8-13Ayodhya Kanda 8.13

तां दृष्ट्वा परमप्रीतां ब्रुवन्तीं मन्थरां ततः। रामस्यैव गुणान्देवी कैकेयी प्रशशंस ह।।2.8.13।।

tāṃ dṛṣṭvā paramaprītāṃ bruvantīṃ mantharāṃ tatḥ| rāmasyaiva guṇāndevī kaikeyī praśaśṃsa ha||2.8.13||

Translation

तत: after that, परम् highly, अप्रीताम् unhappy woman, ब्रुवन्तीम् speaking thus, ताम् that, मन्थराम् to Manthara, दृष्ट्वा having seen, देवी कैकेयी queen Kaikeyi, रामस्य गुणानेव the virtues of Rama, प्रशशंस ह praised.

Meaning

Having seen that morose Manthara speaking thus, Kaikeyi commended the virtues of Rama.

AK-8-14Ayodhya Kanda 8.14

धर्मज्ञो गुरुभिर्दान्तः कृतज्ञस्सत्यवाक्छुचिः। रामो राज्ञ स्सुतो ज्येष्ठो यौवराज्यमतोऽर्हति।।2.8.14।।

dharmajño gurubhirdāntḥ kṛtajñassatyavākchuciḥ| rāmo rājña ssuto jyeṣṭho yauvarājyamato'rhati||2.8.14||

Translation

राम: Rama, धर्मज्ञः knower of righteousness, गुरुभि: by elders, दान्त: selfrestrained, कृतज्ञ: grateful, सत्यवाक् truthful, शुचि: undefiled, राज्ञ: king's, ज्येष्ठ: eldest, सुत: son, अत: therefore, यौवराज्यम् as heirapparent, अर्हति is fit for.

Meaning

Rama knows righteouness. He has been taught selfrestraint by elders. He is grateful and truthful. He is undefiled. He is the eldest son of the king. Therefore, he deserves to be the heirapparent (of the kingdom).

AK-8-15Ayodhya Kanda 8.15

भ्रातृ़न्भृत्यांश्च दीर्घायुः पितृवत्पालयिष्यति। सन्तप्स्यसे कथं कुब्जे श्रुत्वा रामाभिषेचनम्।।2.8.15।।

bhrātṛ़nbhṛtyāṃśca dīrghāyuḥ pitṛvatpālayiṣyati| santapsyase kathṃ kubje śrutvā rāmābhiṣecanam||2.8.15||

Translation

दीर्घायु: blessed with a long life, भ्रातृ़न् his brothers, भृत्यांश्च and the servants, पितृवत् like a father, पालयिष्यति will rule, कुब्जे O hunchback, रामाभिषेचनम् Rama's coronation, श्रुत्वा having heard, कथम् why, सन्तप्यसे are grieving?

Meaning

Blessed with a long life, Rama will protect his brothers and the servants like a father. O hunchback, hearing Rama's coronation why are you aggrieved?

AK-8-16Ayodhya Kanda 8.16

भरतश्चापि रामस्य ध्रुवं वर्षशतात्परम्। पितृपैतामहं राज्यमवाप्ता पुरुषर्षभः।।2.8.16।।

bharataścāpi rāmasya dhruvṃ varṣaśatātparam| pitṛpaitāmahṃ rājyamavāptā puruṣarṣabhḥ||2.8.16||

Translation

वर्षशतात् hundred years, परम् beyond, पुरुषर्षभ: best of men, भरतश्चापि Bharata also, रामस्य Rama's, पितृपैतामहम् pertaining to fathers and grandfathers, राज्यम् kingdom, अवाप्ता will inherit.

Meaning

After a hundred years of Rama's rule, Bharata, the best of men, will get the kingdom of his ancestors.

AK-8-17Ayodhya Kanda 8.17

सा त्वमभ्युदये प्राप्ते वर्तमाने च मन्थरे। भविष्यति च कल्याणे किमर्थं परितप्यसे।।2.8.17।।

sā tvamabhyudaye prāpte vartamāne ca manthare| bhaviṣyati ca kalyāṇe kimarthṃ paritapyase||2.8.17||

Translation

मन्थरे O Manthara, सा त्वम् you, अभ्युदये prosperity, प्राप्ते affained, वर्तमाने च at present, कल्याणे wellbeing, भविष्यति will have in future, किमर्थम् why, परितप्यसे are you grieving.

Meaning

Manthara, we have enjoyed prosperity in the past, we are enjoying it now and we will enjoy it in future. Then why are you aggrieved?

AK-8-18Ayodhya Kanda 8.18

यथा मे भरतो मान्यस्तथा भूयोऽपि राघवः। कौशल्यातोऽतिरिक्तं च सोऽनुशुश्रूषते हि माम्।।2.8.18।।

yathā me bharato mānyastathā bhūyo'pi rāghavḥ| kauśalyāto'tiriktṃ ca so'nuśuśrūṣate hi mām||2.8.18||

Translation

मे to me, भरत: Bharata, यथा as, मान्य: worthy of consideration, राघव: son of the Raghus (Rama), तथा is so, भूय: अपि more so, स: he, माम् me, कौशल्यात: more than Kausalya, अतिरिक्तम् more, अनुशुश्रूषते हि is serving me.

Meaning

For me, if Bharata is worthy of consideration Rama is worthier. He serves me even more (scrupulously) than he does Kausalya.

AK-8-19Ayodhya Kanda 8.19

राज्यं यदि हि रामस्य भरतस्यापि तत्तदा। मन्यते हि यथात्मानं तथा भ्रातृ़ंश्च राघवः।।2.8.19।।

rājyṃ yadi hi rāmasya bharatasyāpi tattadā| manyate hi yathātmānṃ tathā bhrātṛ़ṃśca rāghavḥ||2.8.19||

Translation

रामस्य Rama's, राज्यं यदि if it is his kingdom, तत् that one, तदा then, भरतस्यापि Bharata's also, राघव: Rama, आत्मानम् own self, यथा as, भ्रातृ़ंश्च his brothers also, तथा in that way, मन्यते considers.

Meaning

If the kingdom is Rama's, it is also Bharata's, since Rama regards his brothers as his own self

AK-8-20Ayodhya Kanda 8.20

कैकेयीवचनं श्रुत्वा मन्थरा भृशदुःखिता। दीर्घमुष्णं च विनिश्वस्य कैकेयीमिदमब्रवीत्।।2.8.20।।

kaikeyīvacanṃ śrutvā mantharā bhṛśaduḥkhitā| dīrghamuṣṇṃ ca viniśvasya kaikeyīmidamabravīt||2.8.20||

Translation

मन्थरा Manthara, कैकेयीवचनम् Kaikeyi's words, श्रुत्वा having heard, भृश दु:खिता very much unhappy, दीर्घम् deeply, उष्णं च and hot, विनिश्वस्य after heaving, कैकेयीम् addressing Kaikeyi, इदम् this word, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Having heard Kaikeyi's words Manthara was extremely unhappy. Heaving deep, hot sighs she said to Kaikeyi.

AK-8-21Ayodhya Kanda 8.21

अनर्थदर्शिनी मौर्ख्यान्नात्मानमवबुध्यसे। शोकव्यसनविस्तीर्णे मज्जन्ती दुःखसागरे।।2.8.21।।

anarthadarśinī maurkhyānnātmānamavabudhyase| śokavyasanavistīrṇe majjantī duḥkhasāgare||2.8.21||

Translation

शोकव्यसनविस्तीर्णे widened with tears and troubles, दु:खसागरे in the ocean of sorrow, मज्जन्ती while you are sinking, मौर्ख्यात् out of stupidity, अनर्थदर्शिनी do not see (your own) wellbeing, आत्मानम् (your) own self, नावबुध्यसे you do not perceive.

Meaning

You are sinking in the sea of sorrow widened with tears and troubles. But you are stupid enough not to perceive your own wellbeing.

AK-8-22Ayodhya Kanda 8.22

भविता राघवो राजा राघवस्यानु यस्सुतः। राजवंशात्तु कैकेयि भरतःपरिहास्यते।।2.8.22।।

bhavitā rāghavo rājā rāghavasyānu yassutḥ| rājavṃśāttu kaikeyi bharatḥparihāsyate||2.8.22||

Translation

राघव: the scion of the Raghus (Rama), राजा as king, भविता will become, राघवस्य अनु suceeding Rama, य: who, सुत: (his) son( will become king), कैकेयि O Kaikeyi, भरत: तु on the contrary Bharata, राजवंशात् from royal dynasty, परिहास्यते will be debarred.

Meaning

Rama, the scion of the Raghus, will become king. After Rama, his son will suceed him. O Kaikeyi, as for Bharata, he will be debarred from royal succession (altogether).

AK-8-23Ayodhya Kanda 8.23

न हि राज्ञस्सुता स्सर्वे राज्ये तिष्ठन्ति भामिनि। स्थाप्यमानेषु सर्वेषु सुमहाननयो भवेत्।।2.8.23।।

na hi rājñassutā ssarve rājye tiṣṭhanti bhāmini| sthāpyamāneṣu sarveṣu sumahānanayo bhavet||2.8.23||

Translation

भामिनि O lovely lady, राज्ञ: king's, सुता: sons, सर्वे all, राज्ये in the kingdom, न तिष्ठन्ति हि will not succeed, सर्वेषु of all, स्थाप्यमानेषु are installed as kings, सुमहान् very great, अनय: mismanagement, भवेत् will happen.

Meaning

O lovely lady, not all the sons of the king will inherit the kingdom. If all of them are installed as kings, there will be great disorder.

AK-8-24Ayodhya Kanda 8.24

तस्माज्ज्येष्ठे हि कैकेयि राज्यतन्त्राणि पार्थिवाः। स्थापयन्त्यनवद्याङ्गि गुणवत्स्वितरेष्वपि।।2.8.24।।

tasmājjyeṣṭhe hi kaikeyi rājyatantrāṇi pārthivāḥ| sthāpayantyanavadyāṅgi guṇavatsvitareṣvapi||2.8.24||

Translation

अनवद्याङ्गि O one of beautiful limbs, कैकेयि Kaikeyi, तस्मात् for that reason, पार्थिवा: kings, ज्येष्ठे (either) in the eldest son, गुणवत्सु possessing virtues, इतरेष्वपि or in other sons, राज्यतन्त्राणि governance of a kingdom, स्थापयन्ति beston.

Meaning

O Kaikeyi of beautiful limbs, for that reason kings bestow the governance of the kingdom either on the eldest or on other virtuous sons.

AK-8-25Ayodhya Kanda 8.25

असावत्यन्तनिर्भग्नस्तव पुत्रो भविष्यति। अनाथवत्सुखेभ्यश्च राजवंशाच्च वत्सले।।2.8.25।।

asāvatyantanirbhagnastava putro bhaviṣyati| anāthavatsukhebhyaśca rājavṃśācca vatsale||2.8.25||

Translation

वत्सले O dear( Kaikeyi), तव your, असौ this, पुत्र: son, अनाथवत् like an orphan, सुखेभ्य: च from comforts, राजवंशाच्च from royal succession, अत्यन्तनिर्भग्न: very much brokenhearted, भविष्यति will become.

Meaning

O (Kaikeyi) dear cut off from royal succession as well as from its comforts, your son will become totally forlorn and brokenhearted.

AK-8-26Ayodhya Kanda 8.26

साऽहं त्वदर्थे सम्प्राप्ता त्वं तु मां नावबुद्ध्यसे। सपत्नि वृद्धौ या मे त्वं प्रदेयं दातुमिच्छसि।।2.8.26।।

sā'hṃ tvadarthe samprāptā tvṃ tu māṃ nāvabuddhyase| sapatni vṛddhau yā me tvṃ pradeyṃ dātumicchasi||2.8.26||

Translation

सा अहम् such as me, त्वदर्थे in your interest, सम्प्राप्ता have come, त्वं तु nevertheless, you, माम् me, नावबुध्यसे do not understand, या whom, त्वम् you, सपत्निवृद्धौ on the occasion of prosperity of your cowife, मे to me, प्रदेयं दातुम् to confer gift, इच्छसि wish.

Meaning

I am here to serve your interest. Nevertheless you do not understand me and you wish to confer gifts on me on the occasion of the prosperity of your cowife.

AK-8-27Ayodhya Kanda 8.27

ध्रुवं तु भरतं रामः प्राप्य राज्यमकण्टकम्। देशान्तरं वा नयिता लोकान्तरमथाऽपि वा।।2.8.27।।

dhruvṃ tu bharatṃ rāmḥ prāpya rājyamakaṇṭakam| deśāntarṃ vā nayitā lokāntaramathā'pi vā||2.8.27||

Translation

राम: Rama, अकण्टकम् free from thorns (enemies), राज्यम् kingdom, प्राप्य having obtained, भरतम् Bharata, देशान्तरं वा out of the country, अथापि वा or else, लोकान्तरम् to the other world, नयिता he will send, ध्रुवम् this is certain.

Meaning

Rama, having secured the thornless kingdom, will banish Bharata from the country or else send him to the other world. This is certain.

AK-8-28Ayodhya Kanda 8.28

बाल एव हि मातुल्यं भरतो नायितस्त्वया। सन्निकर्षाच्च सौहार्दं जायते स्थावरेष्वपि।।2.8.28।।

bāla eva hi mātulyṃ bharato nāyitastvayā| sannikarṣācca sauhārdṃ jāyate sthāvareṣvapi||2.8.28||

Translation

त्वया by you, भरत: Bharata, बाल: एव even as a child, मातुल्यम् maternal uncle's house, नायित: हि has been sent off, सन्निकर्षात् from proximity, स्थावरेष्वपि even among the immobile (inanimate) objects, सौहार्दम् friendliness, जायते is created.

Meaning

Bharata has been sent by you right from his childhood to his maternal uncle's house. Proximity creates friendship even amongst the inanimate objects.

AK-8-29Ayodhya Kanda 8.29

भरतस्याप्यनुवशश्शत्रुघ्नोऽपि समं गतः। लक्ष्मणो हि यथा रामं तथाऽसौ भरतं गतः।।2.8.29।।

bharatasyāpyanuvaśaśśatrughno'pi samṃ gatḥ| lakṣmaṇo hi yathā rāmṃ tathā'sau bharatṃ gatḥ||2.8.29||

Translation

भरतस्य of Bharata, अनुवश: obedient, शत्रुघ्नोऽपि Satrughna also, समम् along with him, गत: has gone, लक्ष्मण: Lakshmana, रामम् to Rama, यथा as, असौ this Satrughna, तथा in that way, भरतम् to Bharata.

Meaning

Satrughna who is obedient to Bharata has followed him. Like Lakshmana who has taken refuge in Rama, he has also resorted to Bharata.

AK-8-30Ayodhya Kanda 8.30

श्रूयते हि द्रुमः कश्चिच्छेत्तव्यो वनजीविभिः। सन्निकर्षादिषीकाभिर्मोचितः परमाद्भयात्।।2.8.30।।

śrūyate hi drumḥ kaścicchettavyo vanajīvibhiḥ| sannikarṣādiṣīkābhirmocitḥ paramādbhayāt||2.8.30||

Translation

वनजीविभि: by those living on the forest, छेत्तव्य: intended for felling, कश्चित् one such, द्रुम: tree, इषीकाभि: grass known as Ishika (thorny bushes), सन्निकर्षात् due to being in the close vicinity, परमात् from great, भयात् from fear, मोचित: set free, श्रूयते हि it is heard.

Meaning

It is said that a tree intended to be cut down by those living on the forest is let off due to entanglement of a kind of grass known as Ishika (thorny bushes) growing in its vicinity. (If Bharata had been at Ayodhya now, Dasaratha himself would have helped him.

AK-8-31Ayodhya Kanda 8.31

गोप्ता हि रामं सौमित्रिर्लक्ष्मणं चापि राघवः। अश्विनोरिव सौभ्रात्रं तयोर्लोकेषु विश्रुतम्।।2.8.31।।

goptā hi rāmṃ saumitrirlakṣmaṇṃ cāpi rāghavḥ| aśvinoriva saubhrātrṃ tayorlokeṣu viśrutam||2.8.31||

Translation

सौमित्रि: Lakshmana, रामम् Rama, गोप्ता हि surely going to protect, राघव: son of he Raghus (Rama), लक्ष्मणं चापि to Lakshmana also, अश्विनो: like of twin 'Ashwins', सौभ्रात्रं इव like brotherhood, तयो: their, लोकेषु in the worlds, विश्रृतम् is renowned.

Meaning

Just as Lakshmana protects Rama, Rama protects Lakshmana. Their brotherhood is renowned in the world like that of the Ashwins.

AK-8-32Ayodhya Kanda 8.32

तस्मान्न लक्ष्मणे रामः पापं किञ्चित्करिष्यति। रामस्तु भरते पापं कुर्यादिति न संशयः।।2.8.32।।

tasmānna lakṣmaṇe rāmḥ pāpṃ kiñcitkariṣyati| rāmastu bharate pāpṃ kuryāditi na sṃśayḥ||2.8.32||

Translation

तस्मात् therefore, राम: Rama, लक्ष्मणे to Lakshmana, पापम् harm, किञ्चित् even little, न करिष्यति will not do, भरते तु as to but in respect of Bharata, राम: Rama, पापम् harm, कुर्यात् will do, इति in this, न संशय: there is no doubt.

Meaning

Rama will do no harm to Lakshmana. As for Bharata, Rama will doubtless do him harm.

AK-8-33Ayodhya Kanda 8.33

तस्माद्राजगृहादेव वनं गच्छतु ते सुतः। एतद्धि रोचते मह्यं भृशं चापि हितं तव।।2.8.33।।

tasmādrājagṛhādeva vanṃ gacchatu te sutḥ| etaddhi rocate mahyṃ bhṛśṃ cāpi hitṃ tava||2.8.33||

Translation

तस्मात् therefore, ते सुत: your son, राजगृहादेव from Rajagriha (the place of Bharata's maternal uncle) straightaway, वनम् to the forest, गच्छतु let go, एतत् that only, मह्यम् for me, रोचते हि alone is pleasing, तवापि च for you also, भृशम् highly, हितम् beneficial.

Meaning

Therefore let your son go to the forest straight from his uncle's palace only. That alone will please me. For you also this is highly beneficial.

AK-8-34Ayodhya Kanda 8.34

एवं ते ज्ञातिपक्षस्य श्रेयश्चैव भविष्यति। यदि चेद्भरतो धर्मात्पित्र्यं राज्यमवाप्स्यसि।।2.8.34।।

evṃ te jñātipakṣasya śreyaścaiva bhaviṣyati| yadi cedbharato dharmātpitryṃ rājyamavāpsyasi||2.8.34||

Translation

भरत: Bharata, धर्मात् righteously, पित्र्यम् relating to his father,राज्यम् kingdom, अवाप्स्यसि यदि if he secures, एवं चेत् if it happens that way, ते to you, ज्ञातिपक्षस्य चैव and also to your relations, श्रेय: welfare, भविष्यति will happen.

Meaning

If Bharata secures the ancestral kingdom righteously, it will bring welfare to you and to your relations also.

AK-8-35Ayodhya Kanda 8.35

स ते सुखोचितो बालो रामस्य सहजो रिपुः। समृद्धार्थस्य नष्टार्थो जीविष्यति कथं वशे।।2.8.35।।

sa te sukhocito bālo rāmasya sahajo ripuḥ| samṛddhārthasya naṣṭārtho jīviṣyati kathṃ vaśe||2.8.35||

Translation

ते your, सुखोचित: accustomed to comforts, स: बाल: that young Bharata, रामस्य of Rama, सहज:रिपु: is born enemy, नष्टार्थ: deprived of all wealth, समृद्धार्थस्य of prosperous (Rama), वशे under the control, कथम् how, जीविष्यति will live.

Meaning

Your son, that young Bharata, is accustomed to comforts. He is a born enemy of Rama. How will he, deprived of all wealth, live under the control of Rama?

AK-8-36Ayodhya Kanda 8.36

अभिद्रुतमिवारण्ये सिंहेन गजयूथपम्। प्रच्छाद्यमानं रामेण भरतं त्रातुमर्हसि।।2.8.36।।

abhidrutamivāraṇye siṃhena gajayūthapam| pracchādyamānṃ rāmeṇa bharatṃ trātumarhasi||2.8.36||

Translation

अरण्ये in the forest, सिंहेन by a lion, अभिद्रुतम् being attacked, गजयूथपम्इव like the leader of the elephant herd, रामेण by Rama, प्रच्छाद्यमानम् being overpowered, भरतम् Bharata, त्रातुम् to save, अर्हसि it behoves you.

Meaning

Like the leader of an elephantherd attacked by a lion in the forest, Bharata is going to be oppressed by Rama. You should save him.

AK-8-37Ayodhya Kanda 8.37

दर्पान्निराकृता पूर्वं त्वया सौभाग्यवत्तया। राममाता सपत्नी ते कथं वैरं न शातयेत्।।2.8.37।।

darpānnirākṛtā pūrvṃ tvayā saubhāgyavattayā| rāmamātā sapatnī te kathṃ vairṃ na śātayet||2.8.37||

Translation

त्वया by you, सौभाग्यवत्तया being fortunate (being favourite wife of your husband), दर्पात् from pride, पूर्वम् earlier, निराकृता was slighted, ते your, सपत्नी cowife (Kausalya), राममाता Rama's mother, वैरम् grudge, कथम् how, न शातयेत् will not retaliate.

Meaning

Being fortunate (being the favourite wife of your husband) you slighted your cowife earlier with pride. How will she, Rama's mother (Kausalya) remain without retaliating?

AK-8-38Ayodhya Kanda 8.38

यदा हि रामः पृथिवीमवाप्स्यति प्रभूतरत्नाकरशैलपत्तनाम्। तदा गमिष्यस्यशुभं पराभवं सहैव दीना भरतेन भामिनि।।2.8.38।।

yadā hi rāmḥ pṛthivīmavāpsyati prabhūtaratnākaraśailapattanām| tadā gamiṣyasyaśubhṃ parābhavṃ sahaiva dīnā bharatena bhāmini||2.8.38||

Translation

भामिनि O lovely lady, राम: Rama, यदा when, प्रभूतरत्नाकरशैलपत्तनाम् with its oceans, mountains and towns, पृथिवीम् to this earth, अवाप्स्यति secures, तदा then, भरतेन सहैव along with Bharata, दीना become miserable, अशुभम् disgrace, गमिष्यसि will attain.

Meaning

O lovely lady when Rama becomes the lord of this earth with its oceans, mountains and cities, then along with Bharata you will become miserable and fall into disgrace.

AK-8-39Ayodhya Kanda 8.39

यदा हि रामः पृथिवीमवाप्स्यति ध्रुवं प्रणष्टो भरतो भविष्यति। अतो हि सञ्चिन्तय राज्यमात्मजे परस्य चैवाद्य विवासकारणम्।।2.8.39।।

yadā hi rāmḥ pṛthivīmavāpsyati dhruvṃ praṇaṣṭo bharato bhaviṣyati| ato hi sañcintaya rājyamātmaje parasya caivādya vivāsakāraṇam||2.8.39||

Translation

राम: Rama, यदा हि when, पृथिवीम् this earth, अवाप्स्यति obtains, भरत: Bharata, ध्रृवम् certainly, प्रणष्ट: ruined, भविष्यति will become, अत: for that reason, आत्मजे your son, राज्यम् kingdom, अद्यैव right now, परस्य enemy Rama's, विवासकारणम् means of banishment, सञ्चिन्तय think over.

Meaning

When Rama obtains this earth, Bharata will be certainly ruined. Therefore, right now think of the kingdom for your son and the means of banishment for your enemy, Rama. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे अष्टमस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the eighth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
