AK-71-1Ayodhya Kanda 71.1

[Crossing many rivers, forests and territories Bharata reaches Ayodhya -- witnesses scenes of dull desolation charged with an atmosphere of apprehensions -- enters the palace dejected] स प्राङ्मुखो राजगृहादभिनिर्याय राघवः। ततस्सुदामां द्युतिमान् सन्तीर्यावेक्ष्य तां नदीम्।।2.71.1।। ह्लादिनीं दूरपारां च प्रत्यक्स्रोतस्तरङ्गिणीम्। शतद्रूमतरच्छ्रीमान्नदीमिक्ष्वाकुनन्दनः।।2.71.2।।

Translation

 द्युतिमान् the glorious, श्रीमान् the auspicious, इक्ष्वाकुकुलनन्दनः the delight of the Ikshvaku race, सः राघवः that (Bharata) of Raghu dynasty, राजगृहात् from Rajagriha, प्राङ्मुखः eastwards, अभिनिर्याय set out, ततः then, ताम् that, सुदामाम् Sudama, नदीम् river, आवेक्ष्य seen, सन्तीर्य having crossed, ह्लादिनीम् river Hladini, दूरपाराम् very wide, प्रत्यक्स्रोतस्तरङ्गिणीम् flowing westwards crested with waves, शतद्रूम् नदीम् river Satadru (Satlej), अतरत् crossed.

Meaning

 Glorious and prosperous prince Bharata, the delight of the Ikshvaku race, set out from Rajagriha, took the eastern direction, and observing the course of the river Sudama crossed Hladini and Satadru rivers which were very wide and flowing westwards crested with waves.

AK-71-2Ayodhya Kanda 71.2

स प्राङ्मुखो राजगृहादभिनिर्याय राघवः। ततस्सुदामां द्युतिमान् सन्तीर्यावेक्ष्य तां नदीम्।।2.71.1।। ह्लादिनीं दूरपारां च प्रत्यक्स्रोतस्तरङ्गिणीम्। शतद्रूमतरच्छ्रीमान्नदीमिक्ष्वाकुनन्दनः।।2.71.2।।

Translation

AK-71-3-4Ayodhya Kanda 71.3–4 (युग्मम्)

ऐलाधाने नदीं तीर्त्वा प्राप्य चापरपर्पटान्। शिलामकुर्वतीं तीर्त्वा आग्नेयं शल्यकर्षणम्।।2.71.3।। सत्यसन्धश्शुचिश्श्रीमान्प्रेक्षमाण श्शिलावहाम्। अत्ययात्स महाशैलान्वनं चैत्ररथं प्रति।।2.71.4।।

ailādhāne nadīṃ tīrtvā prāpya cāparaparpaṭān| śilāmakurvatīṃ tīrtvā āgneyṃ śalyakarṣaṇam||2.71.3|| satyasandhaśśuciśśrīmānprekṣamāṇa śśilāvahām| atyayātsa mahāśailānvanṃ caitrarathṃ prati||2.71.4||

Translation

 सत्यसन्ध: one who is always true to his word, शुचिः purehearted, श्रीमान् handsome, सः he (Bharata), ऐलाधाने in Eladhana, नदीम् river, तीर्त्वा crossed, अपरपर्पटान् Aparaparpata region, प्राप्य च having reached, शिलाम् hill, अकुर्वतीम् originating, तीर्त्वा having crossed, आग्नेयम् towards northeast, शल्यकर्षणम् Salyakarsna, शिलावहाम् Silavaha, प्रेक्षमाणः observing, चैत्ररथं वनं प्रति towards a forest called Chaitraratha, महाशैलान् great mountains, अत्ययात् went beyond.

Meaning

 Bharata, ever true to his word, handsome and purehearted, reached Aparaparpata region and crossed river Satadru at Eladhana, the mountain in which river Silavaha originates. Then he traversed Salyakarsna regions in the northeast, observing the course of the Silavaha and went beyond the great mountains in the direction of the forest called Chaitraratha.

AK-71-5Ayodhya Kanda 71.5

सरस्वतीं च गङ्गां च युग्मेन प्रतिपद्यच। उत्तरान्वीरमत्स्यानां भारुण्डं प्राविशद्वनम्।।2.71.5।।

sarasvatīṃ ca gaṅgāṃ ca yugmena pratipadyaca| uttarānvīramatsyānāṃ bhāruṇḍṃ prāviśadvanam||2.71.5||

Translation

 सरस्वतीं च Saraswati, गङ्गां च Ganga, युग्मेन at the confluence, प्रतिपद्य having arrived, वीरमत्स्यानाम् of Veeramatsya region, उत्तराम् to the north, भारुण्डं वनम् forest Bharunda, प्राविशत् entered.

Meaning

 Arriving at the confluence of Saraswati and Ganga and traversing the north of Veeramatsya region, he entered the Bharunda forest.

AK-71-6Ayodhya Kanda 71.6

वेगिनीं च कुलिङ्गाख्यां ह्लादिनीं पर्वताऽऽवृताम्। यमुनां प्राप्य सन्तीर्णः बलमाश्वासयत्तदा।।2.71.6।।

veginīṃ ca kuliṅgākhyāṃ hlādinīṃ parvatā''vṛtām| yamunāṃ prāpya santīrṇḥ balamāśvāsayattadā||2.71.6||

Translation

 वेगिनीम् rapidlyflowing, पर्वतावृताम् hillbound, ह्लादिनीम् pleasing to the mind, कुलिङ्गाख्याम् known as Kulinga, यमुनाम् Yamuna, प्राप्य having arrived, सन्तीर्णः he crossed, तदा then, बलम् army, आश्वासयत् made them rest.

Meaning

 He crossed the swiftflowing river known as Kulinga surrounded by hills and pleasing to the mind. Thereafter on crossing Yamuna he made his army rest on the otherside.

AK-71-7Ayodhya Kanda 71.7

सशीतीकृत्य तु गात्राणि क्लान्तानाश्वास्य वाजिनः। तत्र स्नात्वा च पीत्वा च प्रायादादाय चोदकम्।।2.71.7।।

saśītīkṛtya tu gātrāṇi klāntānāśvāsya vājinḥ| tatra snātvā ca pītvā ca prāyādādāya codakam||2.71.7||

Translation

 गात्राणि their limbs, शीतीकृत्य having cooled, क्लान्तान् weary, वाजिनः horses, आश्वास्य having refreshed, तत्र there, स्नात्वा having bathed, पीत्वा च and drinking, उदकम् water, आदाय took, प्रायात् set out.

Meaning

 The weary horses rested and cooled their bodies. And they bathed and drank. They set out again refreshed taking with them a store of water.

AK-71-8Ayodhya Kanda 71.8

राजपुत्रो महारण्यमनभीक्ष्णोपसेवितम्। भद्रो भद्रेण यानेन मारुतः खमिवात्ययात्।।2.71.8।।

rājaputro mahāraṇyamanabhīkṣṇopasevitam| bhadro bhadreṇa yānena mārutḥ khamivātyayāt||2.71.8||

Translation

 भद्रः the blessed one, राजपुत्रः prince (Bharata), अनभीक्ष्णोपसेवितम् uninhabited, महारण्यम् vast forest, भद्रेण by an excellent, यानेन on chariot, मारुतः windgod, खमिव like sky, अत्ययात् passed through.

Meaning

 Then with the blessed prince (Bharata) on an excellent chariot, it (the army) moved through the vast and uninhabited forest like the god of wind passing through the sky.

AK-71-9Ayodhya Kanda 71.9

भागीरथीं दुष्प्रतरामंशुधाने महानदीम्। उपायाद्राघवस्तूर्णं प्राग्वटे विश्रुते पुरे।।2.71.9।।

bhāgīrathīṃ duṣpratarāmṃśudhāne mahānadīm| upāyādrāghavastūrṇṃ prāgvaṭe viśrute pure||2.71.9||

Translation

 राघवः the descendant of Raghu (Bharata), विश्रुते in the famous, प्राग्वटे Pragvata, पुरे city, अंशुधाने at a place known as Anshudhana, दुष्प्रतराम् difficult to cross, महानदीम् mighty river, भागीरथीम् Bhagirathi, तूर्णम् quickly, उपायात् reached.

Meaning

 Bharata, the descendant of Raghu, knowing that the mighty river Bhagirathi was difficult to cross at a place known as Anshudhana, quickly reached the famous city of Pragvata.

AK-71-10Ayodhya Kanda 71.10

स गङ्गां प्राग्वटे तीर्त्वा समायात्कुटिकोष्ठिकाम्। सबल स्तां स तीर्त्वाऽथ समायाद्धर्मवर्धनम्।।2.71.10।।

sa gaṅgāṃ prāgvaṭe tīrtvā samāyātkuṭikoṣṭhikām| sabala stāṃ sa tīrtvā'tha samāyāddharmavardhanam||2.71.10||

Translation

 सः he, प्राग्वटे at Pragvata city, गङ्गाम् river Ganga, तीर्त्वा having crossed, कुटिकोष्ठिकाम् Kutikoshti river, समायात् reached, सः Bharata, सबलः with his army, ताम् that river, तीर्त्वा having crossed, अथ thereafter, धर्मवर्धनम् Dharmavardhana village, समायात् reached.

Meaning

 With Ganga at Pragvata city and river Kutikoshtika crossed along with his army, he reached Dharmavardhana village.

AK-71-11Ayodhya Kanda 71.11

तोरणं दक्षिणार्धेन जम्भूप्रस्थमुपागमत्। वरूथं च ययौ रम्यं ग्रामं दशरथात्मजः।।2.71.11।।

toraṇṃ dakṣiṇārdhena jambhūprasthamupāgamat| varūthṃ ca yayau ramyṃ grāmṃ daśarathātmajḥ||2.71.11||

Translation

 दशरथात्मजः son of Dasaratha, (Bharata), तोरणम् Torana region, दक्षिणार्थेन southern direction of, जम्बूप्रस्थम् Jambuprastha village, उपागमत् arrived, वरूथम् Varutha village, रम्यं pleasant, ग्रामं च village, ययौ obtained.

Meaning

 Having traversed the southern end of Torana, the son of Dasaratha (Bharata) reached the beautiful Varutha village via Jambuprastha.

AK-71-12Ayodhya Kanda 71.12

तत्र रम्ये वने वासं कृत्वाऽसौ प्राङ्मुखो ययौ। उद्यानमुज्जिहानायाः प्रियका यत्र पादपाः।।2.71.12।।

tatra ramye vane vāsṃ kṛtvā'sau prāṅmukho yayau| udyānamujjihānāyāḥ priyakā yatra pādapāḥ||2.71.12||

Translation

 असौ he (Bharata), अत्र there, रम्ये charming, वने forest, वासम् stay, कृत्वा having made, प्राङ्मुखः eastwards, यत्र where, प्रियकाः known as priyaka, पादपाः trees, उज्जिहानायाः Ujjihana, उद्यानम् garden, ययौ reached.

Meaning

 He (Bharata) halted in that charming forest for a while, proceeded eastwards till he reached a place known as Ujjihana garden abounding in spriyaka trees.

AK-71-13Ayodhya Kanda 71.13

सालांस्तु प्रियकान्प्राप्य शीघ्रानास्थाय वाजिनः। अनुज्ञाप्याथ भरतः वाहिनीं त्वरितो ययौ।।2.71.13।।

sālāṃstu priyakānprāpya śīghrānāsthāya vājinḥ| anujñāpyātha bharatḥ vāhinīṃ tvarito yayau||2.71.13||

Translation

 भरतः Bharata, सालान् sala trees, प्रियकान् priyaka trees, प्राप्य having reached, शीघ्रान् swiftrunning, वाजिनः horses, आस्थाय having harnessed, अथ thereafter, वाहिनीम् forces, अनुज्ञाप्य having commanded, त्वरितः quickly, ययौ set out.

Meaning

 After reaching the groves of sala and priyaka trees, Bharata harnessed the swiftrunning horses to the chariot and ordered his forces to proceed fast.

AK-71-14-15Ayodhya Kanda 71.14–15 (युग्मम्)

वासं कृत्वा सर्वतीर्थे तीर्त्वा चोत्तानिकां नदीम्। अन्या नदीश्च विविधाः पार्वतीयैस्तुरङ्गमैः।।2.71.14।। हस्तिपृष्ठकमासाद्य कुटिकामत्यवर्तत। ततार च नरव्याघ्रो लौहित्ये स कपीवतीम्।।2.71.15।।

vāsṃ kṛtvā sarvatīrthe tīrtvā cottānikāṃ nadīm| anyā nadīśca vividhāḥ pārvatīyaisturaṅgamaiḥ||2.71.14|| hastipṛṣṭhakamāsādya kuṭikāmatyavartata| tatāra ca naravyāghro lauhitye sa kapīvatīm||2.71.15||

Translation

 सर्वतीर्थे in a place known as Sarvatirtha, वासम् halt, कृत्वा having made, उत्तानिकां नदीम् Uttanika river, विविधाः various, अन्याः others, नदीश्च rivers, पार्वतीयैः born in the mountains, तुरङ्गमैः on horses, तीर्त्वा having crossed, हस्तिपृष्ठकम् on an elephant, आसाद्य ascending, कुटिकाम् Kutika river, अत्यवर्तत crossed over, सः नरव्याघ्रः the tiger among men, लौहित्ये near Lauhitya, कपीवतीम् river Kapivati, ततार crossed.

Meaning

 That tiger among men, Bharata halted at a place known as Sarvatirtha and crossed the Uttanika and various other rivers with the help of hillborn horses. He crossed the Kutika river on an elephant the river Kapivati at a place known as Lauhitya.

AK-71-16Ayodhya Kanda 71.16

एकसाले स्थाणुमतीं विनते गोमतीं नदीम्। कलिङ्गनगरे चापि प्राप्य सालवनं तदा।।2.71.16।। भरतः क्षिप्रमागच्छत्सुपरिश्रान्तवाहनः।

ekasāle sthāṇumatīṃ vinate gomatīṃ nadīm| kaliṅganagare cāpi prāpya sālavanṃ tadā||2.71.16|| bharatḥ kṣipramāgacchatsupariśrāntavāhanḥ|

Translation

 भरतः Bharata, एकसाले at Ekasala village, स्थाणुमतीम् Sthanumati river, विनते at Vinata village, गोमतीं नदीम् Gomati river, सुपरिश्रान्तवाहनः with extremely fatigued horses, तदा then, कलिङ्गनगरे चापि at Kalinganagara, सालवनम् sala forest, प्राप्य having reached, क्षिप्रम् quickly, आगच्छत् came.

Meaning

 Bharata crossed the rivers Sthanumati at Ekasala and Gomati at Vinata villages. Thereafter as his horses were extremely tired he rested for a while in the sala forest in Kalinganagara before he speedily set out (again).

AK-71-17Ayodhya Kanda 71.17

वनं च समतीत्याशुशर्वर्यामरुणोदये।।2.71.17।। अयोध्यां मनुना राज्ञा निर्मितां सन्ददर्श ह।

vanṃ ca samatītyāśuśarvaryāmaruṇodaye||2.71.17|| ayodhyāṃ manunā rājñā nirmitāṃ sandadarśa ha|

Translation

 आशु quickly, शर्वर्याम् in the night, वनं च forest also, समतीत्य having passed through, अरुणोदये at sunrise, मनुना राज्ञा by king Manu, निर्मिताम् built, अयोध्याम् Ayodhya, सन्ददर्श ह saw.

Meaning

 He passed quickly through the forest at night and at sunrise beheld the city of Ayodhya built by king Manu.

AK-71-18Ayodhya Kanda 71.18

तां पुरीं पुरुषव्याघ्रस्सप्तरात्रोषितः पथि।।2.71.18।। अयोध्यामग्रतो दृष्ट्वा सारथिं वाक्यमब्रवीत्।

tāṃ purīṃ puruṣavyāghrassaptarātroṣitḥ pathi||2.71.18|| ayodhyāmagrato dṛṣṭvā sārathiṃ vākyamabravīt|

Translation

 पथि on the way, सप्तरात्रोषितः spent seven nights, पुरुषव्याघ्रः tiger among men, अग्रतः before him, ताम् अयोध्यां पुरीम् that Ayodhya city, दृष्ट्वा having seen, सारथिम् to the charioteer, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

 Having spent seven nights on his way, that tiger among men (Bharata) saw Ayodhaya before him. He said to the charioteer:

AK-71-19Ayodhya Kanda 71.19

एषा नातिप्रतीता मे पुण्योद्याना यशस्विनी।।2.71.19।। अयोध्या दृश्यते दूरात्सारथे पाण्डुमृत्तिका। यज्वभिर्गुणसम्पन्नैर्ब्राह्मणैर्वेदपारगैः।।2.71.20।। भूयिष्ठमृद्धैराकीर्णा राजर्षिपरिपालिता।

eṣā nātipratītā me puṇyodyānā yaśasvinī||2.71.19|| ayodhyā dṛśyate dūrātsārathe pāṇḍumṛttikā| yajvabhirguṇasampannairbrāhmaṇairvedapāragaiḥ||2.71.20|| bhūyiṣṭhamṛddhairākīrṇā rājarṣiparipālitā|

Translation

 सारथे O charioteer, पुण्योद्याना a city of sacred gardens, यशस्विनी of great renown, पाण्डुमृत्तिका with white clay, यज्वभिः those who perform sacrifices, गुणसम्पन्नैः by the virtuous, वेदपारगैः by those well versed in the vedas, भूयिष्ठम् in abundance , ऋद्धैः by the wealthy, ब्राह्मणैः by brahmins, आकीर्णा filled with, राजर्षिपरिपालिता ruled by rajarsis, एषा अयोध्या such Ayodhya, मे to me, नातिप्रतीता not so clearly, दूरात् from a distance, दृश्यते is seen.

Meaning

 O charioteer I am able to see Ayodhya of great renown from a distance but not so clearly that whiteclaycity of Ayodhya, with its sacred gardens ruled by several rajarsis, inhabited by numerous wealthy people, by virtuous brahmins and priests who perform sacrifices and who are wellversed in the Vedas.

AK-71-20Ayodhya Kanda 71.20

एषा नातिप्रतीता मे पुण्योद्याना यशस्विनी।।2.71.19।। अयोध्या दृश्यते दूरात्सारथे पाण्डुमृत्तिका। यज्वभिर्गुणसम्पन्नैर्ब्राह्मणैर्वेदपारगैः।।2.71.20।। भूयिष्ठमृद्धैराकीर्णा राजर्षिपरिपालिता।

Translation

AK-71-21Ayodhya Kanda 71.21

अयोध्यायां पुरा शब्दश्श्रूयते तुमुलो महान्।।2.71.21।। समन्तान्नरनारीणां तमद्य न श्रुणोम्यहम्।

ayodhyāyāṃ purā śabdaśśrūyate tumulo mahān||2.71.21|| samantānnaranārīṇāṃ tamadya na śruṇomyaham|

Translation

 पुरा earlier, अयोध्यायाम् in Ayodhya, नरनारीणाम् men and women, महान् great, तुमुलः tumultous, शब्दः sound, समन्तात् all over, श्रूयते would hear, अद्य now, तम् that sound, अहम् I, न श्रुणोमि not hear.

Meaning

 I do not hear now, in Ayodhya the tumultous noise of men and women I used to hear earlier all over.

AK-71-22Ayodhya Kanda 71.22

उद्यानानि हि सायाह्ने क्रीडित्वोपरतैर्नरैः।।2.71.22।। समन्तात्परिधावद्भिः प्रकाशन्ते ममान्यथा।

udyānāni hi sāyāhne krīḍitvoparatairnaraiḥ||2.71.22|| samantātparidhāvadbhiḥ prakāśante mamānyathā|

Translation

 सायाह्ने early in the morning, क्रीडित्वा sporting, उपरतैः free from desire, समन्तात् all over, परिधावद्भिः strolling, नरैः people, उद्यानानि parks, मम I, अन्यथा no one, प्रकाशन्ते हि looking bright.

Meaning

 I do not see people who with passion used to stroll in the parks early in the morning. I see no cheerfulness in any one.

AK-71-23Ayodhya Kanda 71.23

तान्यद्यानुरुदन्तीव परित्यक्तानि कामिभिः।।2.71.23।। अरण्यभूतेव पुरी सारथे प्रतिभाति मे।

tānyadyānurudantīva parityaktāni kāmibhiḥ||2.71.23|| araṇyabhūteva purī sārathe pratibhāti me|

Translation

 कामिभिः people full of passion, परित्यक्तानि abandoned, तानि that, अद्य now, अनुरुदन्तीव as if weeping, सारथे O charioteer, पुरी city, अरण्यभूतेव like a forest, मे to me, प्रतिभाति it appears.

Meaning

 O charioteer, people full of passion have abandoned the gardens. To me, the city looks like a forest as if weeping.

AK-71-24Ayodhya Kanda 71.24

न ह्यत्र यानैर्दृश्यन्ते न गजैर्न च वाजिभिः।।2.71.24।। निर्यान्तो वाऽभियान्तो वा नरमुख्या यथापुरम्।

na hyatra yānairdṛśyante na gajairna ca vājibhiḥ||2.71.24|| niryānto vā'bhiyānto vā naramukhyā yathāpuram|

Translation

 अत्र here, नरमुख्याः important people, यथापुरम् as in the past, यानैः riding, निर्यान्तो वा people going (out of city), अभियान्तो वा or coming in, न दृश्यन्ते हि not seen, गजैः elephants, न not, वाजिभिः च horses also, न not.

Meaning

 Important people mounted on elephants or horses are not seen going out of the city or coming in.

AK-71-25Ayodhya Kanda 71.25

उद्यानानि पुरा भान्ति मत्तप्रमुदितानि च।।2.71.25।। जनानां रतिसंयोगेष्वत्यन्तगुणवन्ति च।

udyānāni purā bhānti mattapramuditāni ca||2.71.25|| janānāṃ ratisṃyogeṣvatyantaguṇavanti ca|

Translation

 पुरा earlier, उद्यानानि gardens, मत्तप्रमुदितानि च very melodiously singing, जनानाम् for people, रतिसंयोगेषु lovers for their pleasures, अत्यन्तगुणवन्ति च very appropriate, भान्ति would be.

Meaning

 Earlier the gardens used to reverberate with passionate songs of birds--places appropriate for lovers seeking pleasures.

AK-71-26Ayodhya Kanda 71.26

तान्येतान्यद्य पश्यामि निरानन्दानि सर्वशः।।2.71.26।। स्रस्तपर्णैरनुपथं विक्रोशद्भिरिव द्रुमैः।

tānyetānyadya paśyāmi nirānandāni sarvaśḥ||2.71.26|| srastaparṇairanupathṃ vikrośadbhiriva drumaiḥ|

Translation

 अद्य now, अनुपथम् footpath, स्रस्तपर्णैः dry leaves, विक्रोशद्भिरिव as if crying, द्रुमैः trees, तान्येतानि such (gardens), सर्वशः all over, निरानन्दानि cheerless, पश्यामि see.

Meaning

 Now the trees appear cheerless, the paths are full of dry leaves fallen all over. It appears as if the trees are crying.

AK-71-27Ayodhya Kanda 71.27

नाद्यापि श्रूयते शब्दः मत्तानां मृगपक्षिणाम्।।2.71.27।। संरक्तां मधुरां वाणीं कलं व्याहरतां बहु।

nādyāpi śrūyate śabdḥ mattānāṃ mṛgapakṣiṇām||2.71.27|| sṃraktāṃ madhurāṃ vāṇīṃ kalṃ vyāharatāṃ bahu|

Translation

 संरक्ताम् in the red tincture (of the rising Sun), मधुराम् melodious, वाणीम् voices, बहु many, कलम् sweet sound, व्याहरताम् freely singing and moving, मत्तानाम् proud, मृगपक्षिणाम् animals and birds, शब्दः sound, अद्यापि now, न श्रूयते not hearing.

Meaning

 I do not hear in the red tincture of the rising Sun the melodious voices of the freely moving animals and birds.

AK-71-28Ayodhya Kanda 71.28

चन्दनागरुसम्पृक्तो धूपसम्मूर्छितोऽतुलः।।2.71.28।। प्रवाति पवन श्श्रीमान्किन्नुनाद्य यथापुरम्।

candanāgarusampṛkto dhūpasammūrchito'tulḥ||2.71.28|| pravāti pavana śśrīmānkinnunādya yathāpuram|

Translation

 चन्दनागरुसम्पृक्तः fragrance of sandal and incense, धूपसम्मूर्छितः smell wafting through the smoke, अतुलः incomparable, श्रीमान् prosperous, पवनः wind, अद्य now, यथापुरम् in the city always, किं नु why is it not, न प्रवाति not blowing?

Meaning

 Why is it that the incomparable fragrance of sandal and incense that used to fill the nostrils, not blowing now in the prosperous city of Ayodhya?

AK-71-29Ayodhya Kanda 71.29

भेरीमृदङ्गवीणानां कोणसङ्घट्टितः पुनः।।2.71.29।। किमद्य शब्दो विरतस्सदा दीनगतिः पुरा।

bherīmṛdaṅgavīṇānāṃ koṇasaṅghaṭṭitḥ punḥ||2.71.29|| kimadya śabdo viratassadā dīnagatiḥ purā|

Translation

 पुरा earlier, दीनगतिः melancholy, पुनः again, कोणसङ्घट्टितः sounds of musical instruments, भेरीमृदङ्गवीणानाम् of the trumpets, mrudangas and veena, शब्दः sound, अद्य now, किम् why, विरतः not heard.

Meaning

 Why is it that the sounds of musical instruments like mrudangas and veenas are not heard now? Why is the city filled with melancholy?

AK-71-30Ayodhya Kanda 71.30

अनिष्टानि च पापानि पश्यामि विविधानि च।।2.71.30।। निमित्तान्यमनोज्ञानितेन सीदति मे मनः।

aniṣṭāni ca pāpāni paśyāmi vividhāni ca||2.71.30|| nimittānyamanojñānitena sīdati me manḥ|

Translation

 अनिष्टानि inauspicious symptoms, च also, पापानि sinful sights, पश्यामि see, विविधानि various निमित्तानि passing, अमनोज्ञानि ugly, तेन hence, सीदति filled with grief, मे my मनः mind.

Meaning

 Since I see many passing, inauspicious, sinful, ugly sights, my mind shrinks.

AK-71-31Ayodhya Kanda 71.31

सर्वथा कुशलं सूत दुर्लभं मम बन्दुषु।।2.71.31।। तथाह्यसति सम्मोहे हृदयं सीदतीव मे।

sarvathā kuśalṃ sūta durlabhṃ mama banduṣu||2.71.31|| tathāhyasati sammohe hṛdayṃ sīdatīva me|

Translation

 सूत charioteer, सर्वथा all over, मम to me, बन्धुषु relations, कुशलम् welfare, दुर्लभम् not seem to be true, तथाहि therefore, सम्मोहे deluded, असति it is, मे my, हृदयम् heart, सीदतीव filled with grief.

Meaning

 I do not see anywhere, O charioteer the wellbeing, of my kinsmen. Hence I feel deluded and my heart is filled with grief.

AK-71-32Ayodhya Kanda 71.32

विषण्ण श्श्रान्तहृदयस्त्रस्त स्सुलुलितेन्द्रियः।।2.71.32।। भरतः प्रविवेशाशु पुरीमिक्ष्वाकुपालिताम्।

viṣaṇṇa śśrāntahṛdayastrasta ssululitendriyḥ||2.71.32|| bharatḥ praviveśāśu purīmikṣvākupālitām|

Translation

 विषण्णः dejected, श्रान्तहृदयः with depressed heart, त्रस्तः fearful man, सुलुलितेन्द्रियः losing control over his senses, भरतः Bharata, आशु quickly, इक्ष्वाकुपालिताम् ruled by the Ikshvakus, पुरीम् city of Ayodhya, प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

 Dejected and depressed at heart, with no control over his senses and his mind full of apprehension, Bharata swiftly entered the city of Ayodhya ruled by the Ikshvakus.

AK-71-33Ayodhya Kanda 71.33

द्वारेण वैजयन्तेन प्राविशच्छ्रान्तवाहनः।।2.71.33।। द्वास्स्थैरुत्थाय विजयं पृष्टस्तै स्सहितो ययौ।

dvāreṇa vaijayantena prāviśacchrāntavāhanḥ||2.71.33|| dvāssthairutthāya vijayṃ pṛṣṭastai ssahito yayau|

Translation

 श्रान्तवाहनः with his horses exhausted, वैजयन्तेन known as Vaijayanta, द्वारेण through gate of, प्राविशत् entered, द्वाःस्थैः by gate keepers, उत्थाय having stood up, विजयम् victory, पृष्टः having been uttered, तैः सहितः along with them, ययौ went.

Meaning

 He entered the city through the gate known as Vaijayanta with his horses exhausted. The doorkeepers stood up and amidst cries of victory followed him in.

AK-71-34Ayodhya Kanda 71.34

स त्वनेकाग्रहृदयो द्वास्स्थं प्रत्यर्च्य तं जनम्।।2.71.34।। सूतमश्वपतेः क्लान्तमब्रवीत्तत्र राघवः।

sa tvanekāgrahṛdayo dvāssthṃ pratyarcya tṃ janam||2.71.34|| sūtamaśvapateḥ klāntamabravīttatra rāghavḥ|

Translation

 सः राघवः तु as for the descendant of Raghus, अनेकाग्रहृदयः with a bewildered mind, द्वास्स्थम् to the gatekeepers, तम् those, जनम् people, प्रत्यर्च्य greeting in turn तत्र there, अश्वपतेः to Ashwapati, क्लान्तम् exhausted, सूतम् to the charioteer, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

 Bewildered, that descendant of Raghu (Bharata), reciprocated the greetings of the gatekeepers and then addressed the exhausted charioteer, Ashwapati:

AK-71-35Ayodhya Kanda 71.35

किमहं त्वरयाऽनीतः कारणेन विनानघ।।2.71.35।। अशुभाशङ्कि हृदयं शीलं च पततीव मे।

kimahṃ tvarayā'nītḥ kāraṇena vinānagha||2.71.35|| aśubhāśaṅki hṛdayṃ śīlṃ ca patatīva me|

Translation

 अनघ O irreproachable one, अहम् I am, कारणेन विना without any reason, त्वरया in haste, किम् why, आनीतः was brought, हृदयम् my heart, अशुभाशङ्कि apprehends something inauspcious, मे my, शीलं च disposition, पततीव is lost.

Meaning

 O irreproachable one, why was I brought here in haste without any reason? My mind apprehends something inauspicious. I feel indisposed.

AK-71-36Ayodhya Kanda 71.36

श्रुता नो यादृशाः पूर्वं नृपतीनां विनाशने।।2.71.36।। आकारांस्तानहं सर्वानिहपश्यामि सारथे।

śrutā no yādṛśāḥ pūrvṃ nṛpatīnāṃ vināśane||2.71.36|| ākārāṃstānahṃ sarvānihapaśyāmi sārathe|

Translation

 सारथे O charioteer, नृपतीनाम् kings', विनाशने in destruction, यादृशाः such kind of, पूर्वम् in times past, नः us, श्रुताः have been heard, तान् सर्वान् all those, आकारान् signs, अहम् I, इह पश्यामि I am seeing now.

Meaning

 O charioteer I now see the very for ebodings I had heard in the past in connection with the death of kings.

AK-71-37Ayodhya Kanda 71.37

सम्मार्जनविहीनानि परुषाण्युपलक्षये।।2.71.37।। असंयत कवाटानि श्रीविहीनानि सर्वशः। बलिकर्मविहीनानि धूपसम्मोदनेन च।।2.71.38।। अनाशितकुटुम्बानि प्रभाहीनजनानि च। अलक्ष्मीकानि पश्यामि कुटुम्बिभवनान्यहम्।।2.71.39।।

sammārjanavihīnāni paruṣāṇyupalakṣaye||2.71.37|| asṃyata kavāṭāni śrīvihīnāni sarvaśḥ| balikarmavihīnāni dhūpasammodanena ca||2.71.38|| anāśitakuṭumbāni prabhāhīnajanāni ca| alakṣmīkāni paśyāmi kuṭumbibhavanānyaham||2.71.39||

Translation

 अहम् I, सम्मार्जनविहीनानि unswept, कुटुंम्बिभवनानि houses of families, परुषाणि dirty, उपलक्षये discern, असंयत कवाटानि doors not closed, सर्वशः on every side, श्रीविहीनानि bereft of beauty, बलिकर्मविहीनानि devoid of offering oblations, धूपसम्मोदनेन च with fragrance of burnt incense, अनाशितकुटुम्बानि familes without food, प्रभाहीनजनानि च men devoid of brightness, अलक्ष्मीकानि inauspicious, पश्यामि I see

Meaning

 I see the unswept homes of householders standing dirty with doors not closed. There is no beauty anywhere. No one offers oblations (at the time of worship). There is no fragrance of burning incense. The families have no food to eat. The people look cheerless. I see inauspiciousness everywhere.

apetamālyaśobhāni hyasammṛṣṭājirāṇi ca| devāgārāṇi śūnyāni na cābhānti yathāpuram||2.71.40||

Translation

 अपेतमाल्यशोभानि deprived of the splendour of garlands, असम्मृष्टाजिराणि च floors of the front yards unsmeared, देवागाराः temples, शून्यानि empty, यथापुरम् as before, नाभान्ति च not shining.

Meaning

 The temples stand devoid of the beauty of floral offerings. The floors of front yards are left unswept and unsmeared. They look deserted, devoid of brightness of the past.

AK-71-41Ayodhya Kanda 71.41

देवतार्चाः प्रविद्धाश्च यज्ञगोष्ठ्यस्तथाविधाः। माल्यापणेषु राजन्ते नाद्य पण्यानि वा तथा।।2.71.41।।

devatārcāḥ praviddhāśca yajñagoṣṭhyastathāvidhāḥ| mālyāpaṇeṣu rājante nādya paṇyāni vā tathā||2.71.41||

Translation

 देवतार्चाः offerings to deities, प्रविद्धा: च have been dispensed with, यज्ञगोष्ठ्यः groups of people performing holy sacrifices, तथाविधाः as before, तथा usual, माल्यापणेषु in the markets where garlands are sold, अद्य now, पण्यानि items (garlands) for sale, न राजन्ते are not there.

Meaning

 The offerings to deities have been dispensed with. There are no groups of people performing the usual holy sacrifices. The markets where garlands were sold now stand without them.

AK-71-42Ayodhya Kanda 71.42

दृश्यन्ते वणिजोऽप्यद्य न यथापूर्वमत्रवै। ध्यानसंविग्नहृदयाः नष्टव्यापारयन्त्रिताः।।2.71.42।।

dṛśyante vaṇijo'pyadya na yathāpūrvamatravai| dhyānasṃvignahṛdayāḥ naṣṭavyāpārayantritāḥ||2.71.42||

Translation

 नष्टव्यापारयन्त्रिताः restrained by the loss of business, ध्यानसंविग्नहृदयाः with distracted attention, वणिजोऽपि even traders, अद्य now, अत्र there, यथापूर्वम् as before, न दृश्यन्ते are not seen.

Meaning

 Even traders seem restrained by the loss of business. They are not seen as before concentrating on their trade.

AK-71-43-44Ayodhya Kanda 71.43–44 (युग्मम्)

देवायतनचैत्येषु दीनाः पक्षिगणास्तथा।।2.71.43।। मलिनं चाश्रुपूर्णाक्षं दीनं ध्यानपरं कृशम्। सस्त्रीपुंसं च पश्यामि जनमुत्कण्ठितं पुरे।।2.71.44।।

devāyatanacaityeṣu dīnāḥ pakṣigaṇāstathā||2.71.43|| malinṃ cāśrupūrṇākṣṃ dīnṃ dhyānaparṃ kṛśam| sastrīpuṃsṃ ca paśyāmi janamutkaṇṭhitṃ pure||2.71.44||

Translation

 तथा as before, देवायतनचैत्येषु in temples and in sanctuaries, पक्षिगणाः multitude of birds, दीनाः dispirited, पुरे in the city, सस्त्रीपुंसम् with women and men, जनम् people, उत्कण्ठितम् with choked throats, मलिनम् dull, अश्रुपूर्णाक्षम् eyes filled with tears, दीनम् piteous, ध्यानपरम् absorbed in distressing thoughts, कृशम् emaciated, पश्यामि I see.

Meaning

 I see groups of birds frequenting the temples. The sanctuaries appear dispirited. The people in the city, both men and women look dull, emaciated, pitiable with throats choked. Their eyes are filled with tears and minds absorbed in distressing thoughts.

AK-71-45Ayodhya Kanda 71.45

इत्येवमुक्त्वा भरतस्सूतं तं दीनमानसः। तान्यनिष्टान्ययोध्यायां प्रेक्ष्य राजगृहं ययौ।।2.71.45।।

ityevamuktvā bharatassūtṃ tṃ dīnamānasḥ| tānyaniṣṭānyayodhyāyāṃ prekṣya rājagṛhṃ yayau||2.71.45||

Translation

 भरतः Bharata, अयोध्यायाम् in Ayodhya, तानि these, अनिष्टानि ominous sights, प्रेक्ष्य having seen, दीनमानसः with depressed heart, तं सूतम् that charioteer, इत्येवम् in this way, उक्त्वा having said, राजगृहम् king's palace, ययौ proceeded.

Meaning

 With these words said to the charioteer, Bharata, having seen such ominous sights in Ayodhya, proceeded to the king's palace with a depressed heart.

AK-71-46Ayodhya Kanda 71.46

तां शून्यशृङ्गाटकवेश्मरथ्यां रजोऽरुणद्वारकवाटयन्त्राम्। दृष्ट्वा पुरीमिन्द्रपुरप्रकाशां दुःखेन सम्पूर्णतरो बभूव।।2.71.46।।

tāṃ śūnyaśṛṅgāṭakaveśmarathyāṃ rajo'ruṇadvārakavāṭayantrām| dṛṣṭvā purīmindrapuraprakāśāṃ duḥkhena sampūrṇataro babhūva||2.71.46||

Translation

 शून्यशृङ्गाटकवेश्मरथ्याम् a place with crossroads, houses, and highways deserted, रजोऽरुणद्वारकवाटयन्त्राम् the fittings (nuts and bolts) on the doors red with dust, इन्द्रपुरप्रकाशाम् once having the lustre of the city of Indra, तां पुरीम् that city, दृष्ट्वा having seen, दुःखेन with grief, सम्पूर्णतरः overwhelmed, बभूव became.

Meaning

 As he (Bharata) beheld the city of Ayodhya that once had the lustre of the city of Indra, now with its crossroads, houses and highways all deserted, the fittings (nuts and bolts) on the doors red with dust, he was overwhelmed with grief.
