AK-101-1Ayodhya Kanda 101.1

रामस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा भरतः प्रत्युवाच ह। किं मे धर्माद्विहीनस्य राजधर्मः करिष्यति।।2.101.1।।

rāmasya vacanṃ śrutvā bharatḥ pratyuvāca ha| kiṃ me dharmādvihīnasya rājadharmḥ kariṣyati||2.101.1||

Translation

रामस्य Rama's, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा on listening, भरतः Bharata, प्रत्युवाच ह replied, धर्मात् from righteousness, विहीनस्य devoid of, मे to me, राजधर्मः royal duties, किं करिष्यति of what use to me.

Meaning

On listening to Rama, Bharata replied Of what use shall be these royal duties to me, when I have fallen from righteousness?

AK-101-2Ayodhya Kanda 101.2

शाश्वतोऽयं सदा धर्मः स्थितोऽस्मासु नरर्षभ। ज्येष्ठेे पुत्रे स्थिते राजा न कनीयान् भवेन्नृपः।।2.101.2।।

śāśvato'yṃ sadā dharmḥ sthito'smāsu nararṣabha| jyeṣṭhee putre sthite rājā na kanīyān bhavennṛpḥ||2.101.2||

Translation

नरर्षभ best of men, अयम् this one, शाश्वतः ancient, धर्मः righteousness, अस्मासु in our race, सदा always, स्थितः exists, राजन् O king, ज्येष्ठपुत्रे the eldest son, स्थिते is there, कनीयान् younger one, नृपः king, न भवेत् can never become.

Meaning

O best of men there is an ancient tradition in our race that the younger son cannot become king when the eldest is there.

AK-101-3Ayodhya Kanda 101.3

स समृद्धां मया सार्धमयोध्यां गच्छ राघव। अभिषेचयचात्मानं कुलस्यास्य भवाय नः।।2.101.3।।

sa samṛddhāṃ mayā sārdhamayodhyāṃ gaccha rāghava| abhiṣecayacātmānṃ kulasyāsya bhavāya nḥ||2.101.3||

Translation

राघव Rama, सः he, मया सार्धम् with me, समृद्धाम् prosperous, अयोध्याम् to Ayodhya, गच्छ return, नः for us, अस्य कुलस्य for this race, भवाय for the good of, आत्मानम् yourself, अभिषेचय coronated.

Meaning

Therefore, O scion of the Raghu race, return along with me to prosperous Ayodhya and for the good of our race get your self coronated.

AK-101-4Ayodhya Kanda 101.4

राजानं मानुषं प्राहु र्देवत्वे सम्मतो मम। यस्य धर्मार्थसहितं वृत्तमाहुरमानुषम्।।2.101.4।।

rājānṃ mānuṣṃ prāhu rdevatve sammato mama| yasya dharmārthasahitṃ vṛttamāhuramānuṣam||2.101.4||

Translation

राजानम् king, मानुषम् to be a man, प्राहुः is said (by the wise), यस्य whose, धर्मार्धसहितम् in conformity with righteousness and state craft, वृत्तम् conduct, अमानुषम् beyond human capacity, आहुः they say, मम my, देवत्वे godly, सम्मतः has been claimed.

Meaning

Other think the king to be a human, but to me, he is divine since his conduct and the statecraft are superhuman as they are in conformity with righteousness.

AK-101-5Ayodhya Kanda 101.5

केकयस्थे च मयि तु त्वयि चारण्य माश्रिते। दिवमार्यो गतो राजा यायजूक: सतां मतः।।2.101.5।।

kekayasthe ca mayi tu tvayi cāraṇya māśrite| divamāryo gato rājā yāyajūka: satāṃ matḥ||2.101.5||

Translation

मयि me, केकयस्थे while I was in Kekaya, त्वयि च when you, अरण्यम् to the forest, आश्रिते having taken refuge, आर्यः revered, यायजूकः ever performing sacrifices, सताम् by the virtuous, मतः esteemed, राजा king, दिवम् to heaven, गतः went.

Meaning

While I was in Kekaya and you took refuge in the forest, venerable king (Dasaratha), who was always engaged in sacrifices and was held in high esteem by the virtuous, ascended to heaven.

AK-101-6Ayodhya Kanda 101.6

निष्क्रान्तमात्रे भवति ससीते सहलक्ष्मणे। दुःखशोकाभिभूतस्तु राजा त्रिदिवमभ्यगात्।।2.101.6।।

niṣkrāntamātre bhavati sasīte sahalakṣmaṇe| duḥkhaśokābhibhūtastu rājā tridivamabhyagāt||2.101.6||

Translation

ससीते along with Sita, सहलक्ष्मणे with Lakshmana, भवति when you, निष्क्रान्तमात्रे had just set out, राजा king, दुःखशोकाभिभूतः griefstricken, त्रिदिवम् to heaven, अभ्यगात् went.

Meaning

As soon as you set out for the forest along with Sita and Lakshmana, the king, overwhelmed with grief, attained heaven.

AK-101-7Ayodhya Kanda 101.7

उत्तिष्ठ पुरुषव्याघ्र क्रियतामुदकं पितुः। अहं चायं च शत्रुघ्नः पूर्वमेव कृतोदकौ।।2.101.7।।

uttiṣṭha puruṣavyāghra kriyatāmudakṃ pituḥ| ahṃ cāyṃ ca śatrughnḥ pūrvameva kṛtodakau||2.101.7||

Translation

पुरुषव्याघ्रः O best of men, उत्तिष्ठ arise, पितुः to father, उदकम् traditional libation of water, क्रियताम् offer, अहं च I also, अयम् this, शत्रुघ्नश्च Satrughna also, पूर्वमेव already, कृतोदकौ offered libations of water.

Meaning

Arise, O best of men and offer libations to our father. I and Satrughna have already done so.

AK-101-8Ayodhya Kanda 101.8

प्रियेण किल दत्तं हि पितृलोकेषु राघव। अक्षय्यं भवतीत्याहुर्भवांश्चैव पितुः प्रियः।।2.101.8।।

priyeṇa kila dattṃ hi pitṛlokeṣu rāghava| akṣayyṃ bhavatītyāhurbhavāṃścaiva pituḥ priyḥ||2.101.8||

Translation

राघव O Rama, प्रियेण by a dear one, दत्तम् offered, पितृलोकेषु in the world of manes, अक्षय्यम् भवति becomes eternal, इति thus, आहुः खलु people say indeed, भवांश्चैव you alone, पितुः to father, प्रियः is beloved.

Meaning

O son of Raghu's race, it is said that whatever is offered by a dear son becomes eternal in the world of manes. You alone are the beloved son of our father.

AK-101-9Ayodhya Kanda 101.9

त्वामेव शोचंस्तव दर्शनेप्सुस्त्वय्येव सक्तामनिवर्त्य बुद्धिम्। त्वया विहीन स्तव शोकमग्नस्त्वां संस्मरन्नस्तमितः पिता ते।।2.101.9।।

tvāmeva śocṃstava darśanepsustvayyeva saktāmanivartya buddhim| tvayā vihīna stava śokamagnastvāṃ sṃsmarannastamitḥ pitā te||2.101.9||

Translation

ते your, पिता father, त्वया by you, विहीनः separated, त्वामेव about you, शोचन् grieving, तव your, दर्शनेप्सुः wishing to see, त्वय्येव in you alone, सक्ताम् fixing, बुद्धिम् mind, अनिवर्त्य without diverting, तव your, शोकमग्नः immersed in sorrow, त्वाम् you, संस्मरन् remembering, अस्तमितः departed.

Meaning

Your father, deprived of you, brooding over you, wishing to behold you, unable to divert his mind fixed on you, remembering you alone and immersed in sorrow departed (from this world). इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे एकोत्तर शततम स्सर्गः।। Thus ends the hundredone sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
