AK-60-1Aranya Kanda 60.1

भृशमाव्रजमानस्य तस्याधो वामलोचनम्। प्रास्फुरच्चास्खलद्रामो वेपथुश्चाप्य जायत।।3.60.1।।

bhṛśamāvrajamānasya tasyādho vāmalocanam| prāsphuraccāskhaladrāmo vepathuścāpya jāyata||3.60.1||

Translation

आव्रजमानस्य Rama was moving about, तस्य his, वामलोचनम् left eye, अधः underneath, भृशम् excessively, प्रास्फुरत् throbbed, रामः Rama, प्रास्खलच्च stumbled, अस्य his, वेपथुश्च shivering, जायत was produced.

Meaning

As Rama was returning( to the hermitage), his left eye throbbed repeatedly and he stumbled and his body trembled.

AK-60-2Aranya Kanda 60.2

उपालक्ष्य निमित्तानि सोऽशुभानि मुहुर्मुहुः। अपि क्षेमं नु सीताया इति वै व्याजहार च।।3.60.2।।

upālakṣya nimittāni so'śubhāni muhurmuhuḥ| api kṣemṃ nu sītāyā iti vai vyājahāra ca||3.60.2||

Translation

सः he, अशुभानि inauspicious, निमित्तानि omens, उपालक्ष्य having marked, सीतायाः of Sita, क्षेमम् अपि नु doubting the welfare, मुहुर्मुहुः again and again, व्याजहार च said also.

Meaning

As inauspicious omens appeared again and again, doubting if all is well with Sita, he said to himself, Can Sita be safe?

AK-60-3Aranya Kanda 60.3

त्वरमाणो जगामाथ सीतादर्शनलालसः। शून्यमावसथं दृष्ट्वा बभूवोद्विग्नमानसः।।3.60.3।।

tvaramāṇo jagāmātha sītādarśanalālasḥ| śūnyamāvasathṃ dṛṣṭvā babhūvodvignamānasḥ||3.60.3||

Translation

अथ then, त्वरमाणः hastening , सीता दर्शनलालसः eager to see, जगाम went, शून्यम् empty, आवसथम् hermitage, दृष्ट्वा saw, उद्विग्नमानसः with an anxious mind, बभूव became.

Meaning

Anxious to see Sita, he hastened to the hermitage and finding it empty, became restless.

AK-60-4-5Aranya Kanda 60.4–5 (युग्मम्)

उद्भ्रमन्निव वेगेन विक्षिपन्रघुनन्दनः। तत्र तत्रोटजस्थानमभिवीक्षय समन्ततः।।3.60.4।। ददर्श पर्णशालां च रहितां सीतया तदा। श्रिया विरहितां ध्वस्तां हेमन्ते पद्मिनीमिव।।3.60.5।।

udbhramanniva vegena vikṣipanraghunandanḥ| tatra tatroṭajasthānamabhivīkṣaya samantatḥ||3.60.4|| dadarśa parṇaśālāṃ ca rahitāṃ sītayā tadā| śriyā virahitāṃ dhvastāṃ hemante padminīmiva||3.60.5||

Translation

रघुनन्दनः delight of the Raghu race, वेगेन quickly, उद्भ्रमन्निव turning round and round, विक्षिपन् throwing his hands, तत्र तत्र here and there, उटजस्थानम् place of hermitage, समन्ततः all round, अभिवीक्ष्य scaninng, तदा then, सीतया by Sita, रहिताम् devoid of, हेमन्ते in winter season, ध्वस्ताम् destroyed, पद्मिनीमिव like the lotus pond, श्रिया with beauty, विरहिताम् without, पर्णशालाम् cottage, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Rama, the delight of the Raghu dynasty, hurtled in, turning round, throwing his hands to and fro, casting his looks all around the cottage where she used to move. The cottage, devoid of Sita looked like a lotuspond, the beauty of its lotuses destroyed by winter.

AK-60-6-7Aranya Kanda 60.6–7 (युग्मम्)

रुदन्तमिव वृक्षैश्च म्लानपुष्पमृगद्विजम्। श्रिया विहीनं विध्वस्तं सन्त्यक्तवनदेवतम्।।3.60.6।। विप्रकीर्णाजिनकुशं विप्रविद्धब्रुसीकटम्। दृष्ट्वा शून्यं निजस्थानं विललाप पुनः पुनः।।3.60.7।।

rudantamiva vṛkṣaiśca mlānapuṣpamṛgadvijam| śriyā vihīnṃ vidhvastṃ santyaktavanadevatam||3.60.6|| viprakīrṇājinakuśṃ vipraviddhabrusīkaṭam| dṛṣṭvā śūnyṃ nijasthānṃ vilalāpa punḥ punḥ||3.60.7||

Translation

वृक्षैः by the trees, रुदन्तमिव as if crying, म्लानपुष्पमृगद्विजम् flowers withered and animals and birds turned pale, श्रिया the beauty, विहीनम् devoid of, विध्वस्तम् destroyed, संत्यक्तवनदेवतम् sylvan deities left, विप्रकीर्णाजिनकुशम् with deerskin and kusa grass scattered, विप्रविद्धब्रुसीकटम् with grass cushions and straw mat thrown pellmell, शून्यम् desolate, निजस्थानम् own place, दृष्ट्वा seeing, पुनः पुनः again and again, विललाप wept.

Meaning

The trees with flowers withered, the animals and birds turned pale looked as if they were weeping. Bereft of their beauty they wore a ruinous look. The sylvan deities had left. The deerskin and kusa grass were strewn here and there, the grass cushions and straw mats lay scattered. Seeing his cottage so desolate Rama wept again and again.

AK-60-8Aranya Kanda 60.8

हृता मृता वा नष्टा वा भक्षिता वा भविष्यति। निलीनाप्यथवा भीरुरथवा वनमाश्रिता।।3.60.8।।

hṛtā mṛtā vā naṣṭā vā bhakṣitā vā bhaviṣyati| nilīnāpyathavā bhīrurathavā vanamāśritā||3.60.8||

Translation

भिरुः timid, हृता abducted, मृता वा or dead, नष्टा वा or ruined, भक्षिता वा or eaten up, भविष्यति may be, अथवा or else, निलीना hiding, अथवा or else, वनम् forest, आश्रिता taken shelter,

Meaning

'Timid Sita might have been abducted or dead or crushed or eaten up by demons. Or, she may be hiding for protection in the forest'

AK-60-9Aranya Kanda 60.9

गता विचेतुं पुष्पाणि फलान्यपि च वा पुनः। अथवा पद्मिनीं याता जलार्थं वा नदीं गता।।3.60.9।।

gatā vicetuṃ puṣpāṇi phalānyapi ca vā punḥ| athavā padminīṃ yātā jalārthṃ vā nadīṃ gatā||3.60.9||

Translation

अपिवा or else, पुष्पाणि flowers, फलानि च and fruits, विचेतुम् to pluck, गता gone, अथवा or may be, पद्मिनीम् to a lotus pond, याता to get, जलार्थम् to get water, नदीम् river, गता gone.

Meaning

'Maybe she has gone to pluck flowers or fruits. Or to the lotuspond or river to fetch water.'

AK-60-10Aranya Kanda 60.10

यत्नान्मृगयमाणस्तु नाससाद वने प्रियाम्। शोकरक्तेक्षणश्शोकादुन्मत्त इव लक्ष्यते।।3.60.10।।

yatnānmṛgayamāṇastu nāsasāda vane priyām| śokaraktekṣaṇaśśokādunmatta iva lakṣyate||3.60.10||

Translation

यत्नात् by effort, मृगयमाणः तु while searching, वने in the forest, प्रियाम् darling, नाससाद could not see, शोकरक्तेक्षणः eyes turned red with tears, शोकात् owing to grief, उन्मत्त इव like a mad person, लक्ष्यते he appeared.

Meaning

He ransacked the forest, yet did not find his beloved. He appeared like a mad man, his eyes turned red with tears of sorrow.

AK-60-11Aranya Kanda 60.11

वृक्षाद्वृक्षं प्रधावन्सगिरेश्चाद्रिं नदान्नदीम्। बभूव विलपन्रामश्शोकार्णवपरिप्लुतः।।3.60.11।।

vṛkṣādvṛkṣṃ pradhāvansagireścādriṃ nadānnadīm| babhūva vilapanrāmaśśokārṇavapariplutḥ||3.60.11||

Translation

रामः Rama, वृक्षात् from tree, वृक्षम् to another tree, गिरेः mountain, अद्रिम् to another mountain, नदात् from one river, नदीम् to another river, प्रधावन् while running, विलपन् while weeping, शोकार्णवपरिप्लुतः immersed in a sea of sorrow, बभूव remained.

Meaning

Running from tree to tree, hill to hill, and river to river and weeping, Rama was immersed in a sea of sorrow.

AK-60-12Aranya Kanda 60.12

अपि काचित्त्वया दृष्टा सा कदम्बप्रिया प्रिया। कदम्ब यदि जानीषे शंस सीतां शुभाननाम्।।3.60.12।।

api kācittvayā dṛṣṭā sā kadambapriyā priyā| kadamba yadi jānīṣe śṃsa sītāṃ śubhānanām||3.60.12||

Translation

कदम्ब O Kadamba, कदम्बप्रिया O lover of kadamba flowers, प्रिया my beloved, सा she, काचित् some lady, त्वया by you, अपि दृष्टा is seen, जानीषे यदि if you know, शुभाननाम् fair face, सीताम् Sita, शंस tell.

Meaning

O Kadamba tree, tell me if you have seen my beloved with a fair face and with love for kadamba flowers.

AK-60-13Aranya Kanda 60.13

स्निग्धपल्लवसङ्काशा पीतकौशेयवासिनी। शंसस्व यदि वा दृष्टा बिल्व बिल्वोपमस्तनी।।3.60.13।।

snigdhapallavasaṅkāśā pītakauśeyavāsinī| śṃsasva yadi vā dṛṣṭā bilva bilvopamastanī||3.60.13||

Translation

बिल्व O Bilva, स्निग्धपल्लवसङ्काशा lovely like tender leaf, पीतकौशेयवासिनी dressed in yellow silk, बिल्वोपमस्तनी lady whose breasts are round (like Bilva fruit), यदि वा दृष्टा if you have seen her, शंसस्व let me know.

Meaning

O Bilva tree, tell me if you have seen a lady delicate like your tender leaf, dressed in yellow silk, a lady whose breasts are round like Bilva fruits.

AK-60-14Aranya Kanda 60.14

अथवाऽर्जुन शंस त्वं प्रियां तामर्जुनप्रियाम्। जनकस्य सुता भीरुर्यदि जीवति वा न वा।।3.60.14।।

athavā'rjuna śṃsa tvṃ priyāṃ tāmarjunapriyām| janakasya sutā bhīruryadi jīvati vā na vā||3.60.14||

Translation

अथवा or else, अर्जुन O Arjuna tree, त्वम् you, अर्जुनप्रियाम् lover of Arjuna tree, तां प्रियाम् that beloved of mine, शंस tell me if you know, भीरुः a timid lady, जनकस्य सुता daughter of Janaka, यदि जीवति वा is she living, न वा or not.

Meaning

O Arjuna tree, tell me if you know a timid lady, daughter of Janaka and my beloved, fond of Arjuna tree. Is the living or not ?

AK-60-15Aranya Kanda 60.15

ककुभः ककुभोरूं तां व्यक्तं जानाति मैथिलीम्। यथा पल्लवपुष्पाढ्यो भाति ह्येष वनस्पतिः।।3.60.15।।

kakubhḥ kakubhorūṃ tāṃ vyaktṃ jānāti maithilīm| yathā pallavapuṣpāḍhyo bhāti hyeṣa vanaspatiḥ||3.60.15||

Translation

वनस्पतिः the tree, पल्लवपुष्पाढ्यः rich with tender leaves and flowers, यथा as, भाति appears, ककुभः kakubha, ककुभोरूम् lady with beautiful thighs, ताम् her, मैथिलीम् Maithili's, व्यक्तम् clearly, जानाति the tree knows.

Meaning

This Kakubha tree rich with tender leaves and flowers (perhaps)knows Maithili whose thighs are beautiful like the trunk of the Kakubha tree.

AK-60-16Aranya Kanda 60.16

भ्रमरैरुपगीतश्च यथा द्रुमवरो ह्ययम्। एष व्यक्तं विजानाति तिलकस्तिलकप्रियाम्।।3.60.16।।

bhramarairupagītaśca yathā drumavaro hyayam| eṣa vyaktṃ vijānāti tilakastilakapriyām||3.60.16||

Translation

द्रुमवरः best of trees, अयम् this, तिलकः Tilaka, यथा as, भ्रमरैः with bees, उपगीतः is sung, एषः he that, तिलकप्रियाम् a lover of mark on the forehead, व्यक्तम् it is sure, विजानाति knows?

Meaning

This great Tilaka tree round which bees bumble surely knows the lady who loves to put tilaka marks on the forehead.

AK-60-17Aranya Kanda 60.17

अशोक शोकापनुद शोकोपहतचेतसम्। त्वन्नामानं कुरु क्षिप्रं प्रियासन्दर्शनेन माम्।।3.60.17।।

aśoka śokāpanuda śokopahatacetasam| tvannāmānṃ kuru kṣiprṃ priyāsandarśanena mām||3.60.17||

Translation

शोकापनुद O dispeller of sorrow, अशोक O Ashoka tree, प्रियासन्दर्शनेन by showing me my darling, शोकोपहतचेतसम् with a griefstricken heart , माम् to me, क्षिप्रम् quickly, त्वन्नामानम् let me be called by your name, कुरु do it.

Meaning

O Ashoka tree, dispeller of sorrow, by quickly showing me my darling make me ashoka (free from sorrow) as I am griefstricken at heart.

AK-60-18Aranya Kanda 60.18

यदि ताल त्वया दृष्टा पक्वतालफलस्तनी। कथयस्व वरारोहां कारुण्यं यदि ते मयि।।3.60.18।।

yadi tāla tvayā dṛṣṭā pakvatālaphalastanī| kathayasva varārohāṃ kāruṇyṃ yadi te mayi||3.60.18||

Translation

ताल Palmyra tree, पक्वतालफलस्तनी one who has breasts like ripened palmyra fruit, त्वया by you, दृष्टा यदि if seen, ते you, मयि my, कारुण्यं यदि kind to me, वरारोहाम् Sita, कथयस्व tell me.

Meaning

O Palmyra tree be kind to me and tell me if you have seen my beautiful beloved who has breasts like ripe palmyra fruit?

AK-60-19Aranya Kanda 60.19

यदि दृष्टा त्वया सीता जम्बु जम्बूफलोपमा। प्रियां यदि विजानीषे निःशङ्कं कथयस्व मे।।3.60.19।।

yadi dṛṣṭā tvayā sītā jambu jambūphalopamā| priyāṃ yadi vijānīṣe niḥśaṅkṃ kathayasva me||3.60.19||

Translation

जम्बु O Jambu tree, त्वया by you, सीता Sita, यदि दृष्टा if seen, जम्बूफलोपमा a lady whose body is shining lovely like gold, प्रियाम् the beloved one, (वि)जानीषे यदि know of her, मे to me, निःशङ्कम् without hesitation, कथयस्व tell me.

Meaning

O Jambu tree, do not hesitate to tell me if you know Sita whose body shines lovely like gold.

AK-60-20Aranya Kanda 60.20

अहो त्वं कर्णिकाराद्य सुपुष्पैश्शोभसे भृशम्। कर्णिकारप्रिया साध्वी शंस दृष्टा प्रिया यदि।।3.60.20।।

aho tvṃ karṇikārādya supuṣpaiśśobhase bhṛśam| karṇikārapriyā sādhvī śṃsa dṛṣṭā priyā yadi||3.60.20||

Translation

कर्णिकाराः O Karnikara tree, त्वम् you, अद्य now, सुपुष्पैः with flowers in full doom, भृशम् शोभसे shine, अहो Oh, कर्णिकारप्रिया lover of Karnikara, साध्वी chaste woman, प्रिया beloved, दृष्टा यदि seen her, शंस tell.

Meaning

O Karnikara tree with flowers in full bloom, tell me if you have seen my faithful beloved who is fond of karnikara flowers.

AK-60-21-22Aranya Kanda 60.21–22 (युग्मम्)

चूतनीपमहासालान्पनसान्कुरवान्धवान्। दाडिमाननसान्गत्वा दृष्ट्वा रामो महायशाः।।3.60.21।। मल्लिका माधवीश्चैव चम्पकान्केतकीस्तथा। पृच्छन्रामो वने भान्तः उन्मत्त इव लक्ष्यते।।3.60.22।।

cūtanīpamahāsālānpanasānkuravāndhavān| dāḍimānanasāngatvā dṛṣṭvā rāmo mahāyaśāḥ||3.60.21|| mallikā mādhavīścaiva campakānketakīstathā| pṛcchanrāmo vane bhāntḥ unmatta iva lakṣyate||3.60.22||

Translation

महायशाः renowned, रामः Rama, वने forest, चूतनीपमहासालान् big trees like mango, kadamba and sal, पनसान् jackfruit tree, धवान् dhaba tree, दाडिमान् Pomegranate tree, अपि also,तान् them, मल्लिकाः jasmines, माधवीश्चैव Madhavi creepers, चम्पकान् champaks, तथा similarly, केतकीः Ketaki, दृष्ट्वा seeing, गत्वा going near, पृच्छन् enquired, भ्रान्तः wandering in confusion, उन्मत्तः इव like a madman, लक्ष्यते looked.

Meaning

Renowned Rama, like a madman confused, approached the Mango, Kadamba , Sal and Jackfruit, Dhava, Champak, Ketaki trees and Pomegranate, Jasmine and Madhavi creepers, in order to make similar queries.

AK-60-23Aranya Kanda 60.23

अथवा मृगशाबाक्षीं मृग जानासि मैथिलीम्। मृगविप्रेक्षणी कान्ता मृगीभिस्सहिता भवेत्।।3.60.23।।

athavā mṛgaśābākṣīṃ mṛga jānāsi maithilīm| mṛgaviprekṣaṇī kāntā mṛgībhissahitā bhavet||3.60.23||

Translation

अथवा or, मृग O deer, मृगशाबाक्षीम् doe like eyes, मैथिलीम् Maithili, जानासि known, मृगविप्रेक्षणी whose eyes look like eyes of young deer, कान्ता beloved, मृगीभिः among the female deer, सहिता with, भवेत् may be.

Meaning

Or, O deer do you know about Maithili who has the eyes of a fawn? My beloved who has the restless eyes of a doe may be found in their company.

AK-60-24Aranya Kanda 60.24

गज सा गजनासोरूर्यदि दृष्टा त्वया भवेत्। तां मन्ये विदितां तुभ्यमाख्याहि वरवारण।3.60.24।।

gaja sā gajanāsorūryadi dṛṣṭā tvayā bhavet| tāṃ manye viditāṃ tubhyamākhyāhi varavāraṇa|3.60.24||

Translation

गज O elephant, गजनासोरूः whose thighs are like the trunk of an elephant, सा she, त्वया by you, दृष्टा is seen, यदि भवेत् if she be, ताम् her, तुभ्यम् to you, विदिताम् known, मन्ये I think, वरवारण O best of elephants, आख्याहि tell me.

Meaning

O elephant tell me if you have seen her whose thighs are like the trunk of an elephant. O best of elephants, tell me if you know her.

AK-60-25Aranya Kanda 60.25

शार्दूल यदि सा दृष्टा प्रिया चन्द्रनिभानना। मैथिली मम विस्रब्धं कथयस्व न ते भयम्।।3.60.25।।

śārdūla yadi sā dṛṣṭā priyā candranibhānanā| maithilī mama visrabdhṃ kathayasva na te bhayam||3.60.25||

Translation

शार्दूल tiger, चन्द्रनिभानना lady with a Moon like face, प्रिया dear, सा मैथिली that Mythili, दृष्टा यदि if at all seen by you, विस्रब्धम् with confidence, मम to me, कथयस्व tell me, ते to you, भयम् fear, न not.

Meaning

O tiger tell me freely and fearlessly if you have seen my beloved princess from Mithila with a face like the moon.

AK-60-26Aranya Kanda 60.26

किं धावसि प्रिये दूरे दृष्टासि कमलेक्षणे। वृक्षैराच्छाद्य चात्मानं किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे।।3.60.26।।

kiṃ dhāvasi priye dūre dṛṣṭāsi kamalekṣaṇe| vṛkṣairācchādya cātmānṃ kiṃ māṃ na pratibhāṣase||3.60.26||

Translation

कमलेक्षणे O lotuseyed, प्रिये dear, दूरे to a distance, किम् why, धावसि you are running, दृष्टा seen, असि you, आत्मानम् yourself, वृक्षैः with trees, आच्छाद्य covering, माम् me, किम् why, न प्रतिभाषसे not replying.

Meaning

O lotus eyed darling, why are you running away? I have already seen you. Why are you hiding behind trees and not replying to me?

AK-60-27Aranya Kanda 60.27

तिष्ठ तिष्ठ वरारोहे न तेऽस्ति करुणा मयि। नात्यर्थं हास्यशीलासि किमर्थं मामुपेक्षसे।।3.60.27।।

tiṣṭha tiṣṭha varārohe na te'sti karuṇā mayi| nātyarthṃ hāsyaśīlāsi kimarthṃ māmupekṣase||3.60.27||

Translation

वरारोहे O beautiful lady, तिष्ठ तिष्ठ stay, stay, ते to you, मयि in me, करुणा compassion, नास्ति is not there, अत्यर्थम् very much, हास्यशीला lady fond of making fun, नासि you are not, माम् me, किमर्थम् why, उपेक्षसे do you avoid me.

Meaning

O my beautiful beloved, stay, stay Have you no compassion for me ? You are so fond of fun. Why do you avoid me?

AK-60-28Aranya Kanda 60.28

पीतकौशेयकेनासि सूचिता वरवर्णिनि। धावन्त्यपि मया दृष्टा तिष्ठ यद्यस्ति सौहृदम्।।3.60.28।।

pītakauśeyakenāsi sūcitā varavarṇini| dhāvantyapi mayā dṛṣṭā tiṣṭha yadyasti sauhṛdam||3.60.28||

Translation

वरवर्णिनि O lady of lovely complexion, पीतकौशेयकेन by your yellow silk, सूचिता indicated, असि you are, धावन्त्यपि even while you are running away, मया by me, दृष्टा you are seen, सौहृदम् love for me, अस्ति यदि if you have, तिष्ठ stay.

Meaning

O lady of lovely complexion, I can see your yellow silk (flying), while you are running away. If you have love for me, stay on.

AK-60-29Aranya Kanda 60.29

नैव सा नूनमथवा हिंसिता चारुहासिनी। कृच्छ्रप्राप्तं न मां नूनं यथोपेक्षितुमर्हति।।3.60.29।।

naiva sā nūnamathavā hiṃsitā cāruhāsinī| kṛcchraprāptṃ na māṃ nūnṃ yathopekṣitumarhati||3.60.29||

Translation

अथवा even so, सा she, नैव never, चारुहासिनी lady with sweet smile, हिंसिता hurt, नूनम् surely, यथा as such, कृच्छ्रप्राप्तम् when in difficulties, माम् me, उपेक्षितुम् to ignore, नार्हति should not, नूनम् surely.

Meaning

O lady with a sweet smile I have never hurt you. When I am in difficulty it does not behove you to ignore me.

AK-60-30Aranya Kanda 60.30

व्यक्तं सा भक्षिता बाला राक्षसैः पिशिताशनैः। विभज्याङ्कानि सर्वाणि मया विरहिता प्रिया।।3.60.30।।

vyaktṃ sā bhakṣitā bālā rākṣasaiḥ piśitāśanaiḥ| vibhajyāṅkāni sarvāṇi mayā virahitā priyā||3.60.30||

Translation

मया by me, विरहिता separated, प्रिया my beloved, सा बाला that young lady, व्यक्तम् it is clear, सर्वाणि all, अङ्गानि limbs, विभज्य tearing, पिशिताशनैः by flesheaters, राक्षसैः by demons भक्षिता is eaten away.

Meaning

It is clear that separated from me, the body of my young beloved is torn off and eaten away by carnivorous demons.

AK-60-31Aranya Kanda 60.31

नूनं तच्छुभदन्तोष्ठं सुनासं चारुकुण्डलम्। पूर्णचन्द्रनिभं ग्रस्तं मुखंनिष्प्रभतां गतम्।।3.60.31।।

nūnṃ tacchubhadantoṣṭhṃ sunāsṃ cārukuṇḍalam| pūrṇacandranibhṃ grastṃ mukhṃniṣprabhatāṃ gatam||3.60.31||

Translation

नूनम् surely, शुभदन्तोष्ठम् having beautiful teeth and lips, सुनासम् having beautiful nose, चारुकुण्डलम् shining earrings, पूर्णचन्द्रनिभम् full Moon like, तत् that, मुखम् face, ग्रस्तम् eclipsed, निष्प्रभताम् dull, गतम् is rendered.

Meaning

Her beautiful face with her sparkling teeth and lips, wellshaped nose, shining earrings has been like the full moon, eclipsed and rendered pale.

AK-60-32Aranya Kanda 60.32

सा हि चम्पकवर्णाभा ग्रीवा ग्रैवेयशोभिता। कोमला विलपन्त्यास्तु कान्ताया भक्षिता शुभा।।3.60.32।।

sā hi campakavarṇābhā grīvā graiveyaśobhitā| komalā vilapantyāstu kāntāyā bhakṣitā śubhā||3.60.32||

Translation

विलपन्त्याः wept, कान्तायाः dear wife, चम्पकवर्णाभा like the colour of champak flowers, ग्रैवेयशोभिता adorned with necklaces and other golden chains, कोमला a delicate, शुभा auspicious, सा ग्रीवा of lovely neck, भक्षिता was eaten.

Meaning

That delicate, beautiful neck of my beloved having the complexion of a champak flower and adorned with necklaces was perhaps eaten up.

AK-60-33Aranya Kanda 60.33

नूनं विक्षिप्यमाणौ तौ बाहू पल्लवकोमलौ। भक्षितौ वेपमानाग्रौ सहस्ताभरणाङ्गदौ।।3.60.33।।

nūnṃ vikṣipyamāṇau tau bāhū pallavakomalau| bhakṣitau vepamānāgrau sahastābharaṇāṅgadau||3.60.33||

Translation

विक्षिप्यमाणौ thrown, पल्लवकोमलौ tender like leaves, वेपमानाग्रौ with trembling tips, सहस्ताभरणाङ्गदौ shining with armlets, bracelets, तौ बाहू those two arms, नूनम् surely, भक्षितौ eaten away.

Meaning

Her arms, delicate like tender leaves, their tips (fingers) quivering, adorned with armlets and bracelets have surely been eaten away.

AK-60-34Aranya Kanda 60.34

मया विरहिता बाला रक्षसां भक्षणाय वै। सार्धेनेव परित्यक्ता भक्षिता बहुबान्धवा।।3.60.34।।

mayā virahitā bālā rakṣasāṃ bhakṣaṇāya vai| sārdheneva parityaktā bhakṣitā bahubāndhavā||3.60.34||

Translation

बाला young lady, रक्षसाम् of the demons, भक्षणाय वै for eating by, मया by me, विरहिता separated, बहुबान्धवा having many relations, सार्धेन when half of it is left, परित्यक्ता इव as if abandoned, भक्षिता eaten.

Meaning

The young lady having many relations, forsaken by me, has been (perhaps) picked up by a demon for food and later abandoned halfeaten.

AK-60-35Aranya Kanda 60.35

हा लक्ष्मण महाबाहो पश्यसि त्वं प्रियां क्वचित्। हा प्रिये क्व गता भद्रे हा सीतेति पुनः पुनः।।3.60.35।।

hā lakṣmaṇa mahābāho paśyasi tvṃ priyāṃ kvacit| hā priye kva gatā bhadre hā sīteti punḥ punḥ||3.60.35||

Translation

महाबाहो O longarmed one, हाः लक्ष्मण 'Alas Lakshmana ', त्वम् you, क्वचित् in any place, प्रियाम् dear, पश्यसि are you able to see, भद्रे 'O noble lady', हा प्रिये 'O darling', क्व where, गता you are gone, हा सीते O Sita', इति thus, पुनः again, पुनः again.

Meaning

O longarmed Lakshmana, are you able to see my beloved anywhere? O noble lady, O darling, where have you gone? O Sita SIta

AK-60-36Aranya Kanda 60.36

इत्येवं विलपन्रामः परिधावन्वनाद्वनम्। क्वचिदुद्भ्रमते वेगात्क्वचिद्विभ्रमते बलात्।।3.60.36।। क्वचिन्मत्त इवाभाति कान्तान्वेषणतत्परः।

ityevṃ vilapanrāmḥ paridhāvanvanādvanam| kvacidudbhramate vegātkvacidvibhramate balāt||3.60.36|| kvacinmatta ivābhāti kāntānveṣaṇatatparḥ|

Translation

रामः Rama, इत्येवम् in that manner, विलपन् weeping, वनात् from one forest, वनम् to the other forest, परिधावन् running, क्वचित् at some place, वेगात् with speed, उद्भ्रमते jumped, क्वचित् at some place, बलात् with his strength, विभ्रमते moves fast, क्वचित् at some place, कान्तान्वेषणतत्परः busy in search of his beloved, मत्तः इव like a madman, आभाति was seen.

Meaning

Rama ran from forest to forest, now jumping, now taking strong strides, but all the time weeping, a madman busy in search of his beloved.

AK-60-37Aranya Kanda 60.37

स वनानि नदीश्शैलान् गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च।।3.60.37।। काननानि च वेगेन भ्रमत्यपरिसंस्थितः।

sa vanāni nadīśśailān giriprasravaṇāni ca||3.60.37|| kānanāni ca vegena bhramatyaparisṃsthitḥ|

Translation

सः he, वनानि the forests, नदी: rivers, शैलान् hills, गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च streams of mountains, काननानि च dense forests, अपरिसंस्थितः not stable, वेगेन rushed, भ्रमति he wandered.

Meaning

He rushed through forests, rivers, hills and mountain streams and through dense jungles with an unstable mind.

AK-60-38Aranya Kanda 60.38

तथा स गत्वा विपुलम् महद्वनं परीत्य सर्वं त्वथ मैथिलीं प्रति। अनिष्ठिताशस्सचकार मार्गणे पुनः प्रियायाः परमं परिश्रमम्।।3.60.38।।

tathā sa gatvā vipulam mahadvanṃ parītya sarvṃ tvatha maithilīṃ prati| aniṣṭhitāśassacakāra mārgaṇe punḥ priyāyāḥ paramṃ pariśramam||3.60.38||

Translation

सः Rama, विपुलम् vast, महत् great, वनम् forest, तथा in that way, गत्वा after going, सर्वम् all, परीत्य searching, मैथिलीं प्रति pertaining to Maithili, अनिष्ठिताशः giving up hope of finding her, सः Rama, पुनः again, प्रियायाः his beloved's, मार्गणे in search, परमम् supreme, परिश्रमम् effort, चकार made.

Meaning

Rama went about the vast forest searching for the princess from Mithila all over not giving up hope of finding her. He continued to make great efforts for searching his beloved. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे षष्टितमस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the sixtieth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
