AK-43-1-2Aranya Kanda 43.1–2 (युग्मम्)

सा तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य सुश्रोणी कुसुमान्यपचिन्वती। हेमराजतवर्णाभ्यां पार्श्वाभ्यामुपशोभितम्।।3.43.1।। प्रहृष्टा चानवद्याङ्गी मृष्टहाटकवर्णिनी। भर्तारमपि चक्रन्द लक्ष्मणं चापि सायुधम्।।3.43.2।।

sā tṃ samprekṣya suśroṇī kusumānyapacinvatī| hemarājatavarṇābhyāṃ pārśvābhyāmupaśobhitam||3.43.1|| prahṛṣṭā cānavadyāṅgī mṛṣṭahāṭakavarṇinī| bhartāramapi cakranda lakṣmaṇṃ cāpi sāyudham||3.43.2||

Translation

सुश्रोणी with fine hips, अनवद्याङ्गी a lady of flawless beautiful limbs, मृष्टहाटकवर्णिनी of pure golden complexion, कुसुमानि flowers, अपचिन्वती while picking, सा she, हेमराजतवर्णाभ्याम् with gold and silver colour, पार्श्वाभ्याम् on both sides of the body, उपशोभितम् looking beautiful, तम् that animal, सम्प्रेक्ष्य after seeing, प्रहृष्टा delighted, भर्तारमपि husband and, सायुधम् with arms, लक्ष्मणं चापि Lakshmana too, चक्रन्द cried out.

Meaning

Sita while plucking flowers Sita who had fine hips, flawless beautiful limbs and pure golden complexion felt delighted to see the deer with gold and silver colours on both sides of his body. She called out to Rama and Lakshmana who were equipped with arms.

AK-43-3Aranya Kanda 43.3

तयाऽऽहूतौ नरव्याघ्रौ वैदेह्या रामलक्ष्मणौ। वीक्षमाणौ तु तौ देशं तदा ददृशतुर्मृगम्।।3.43.3।।

tayā''hūtau naravyāghrau vaidehyā rāmalakṣmaṇau| vīkṣamāṇau tu tau deśṃ tadā dadṛśaturmṛgam||3.43.3||

Translation

तया by her, वैदेह्या by Vaidehi, आहूतौ called, नरव्याघ्रौ tigers among men, तौ both, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, (तं) देशम् that place, वीक्षमाणौ while glancing, तदा then, मृगम् deer, ददृशतुः saw.

Meaning

When Sita called Rama and Lakshmana, the two tigers among men, they looked around and saw the deer.

AK-43-4Aranya Kanda 43.4

शङ्कमानस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मणो राममब्रवीत्। तमेवैनमहं मन्ये मारीचं राक्षसं मृगम्।।3.43.4।।

śaṅkamānastu tṃ dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇo rāmamabravīt| tamevainamahṃ manye mārīcṃ rākṣasṃ mṛgam||3.43.4||

Translation

तम् him, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, शङ्कमानः suspected, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, रामम् to Rama, अब्रवीत् said, अहम् I, एनम् him, मृगम् deer, तम् him, मारीचमेव Maricha only, मन्ये I think.

Meaning

Seeing the deer, Lakshmana suspected him to be Maricha and said this to Rama.

AK-43-5Aranya Kanda 43.5

चरन्तोमृगयां हृष्टाः पापेनोपाधिना वने। अनेन निहता राजन् राजानः कामरूपिणा।।3.43.5।।

carantomṛgayāṃ hṛṣṭāḥ pāpenopādhinā vane| anena nihatā rājan rājānḥ kāmarūpiṇā||3.43.5||

Translation

राजन् O king, हृष्टाः happy, मृगयां चरन्तः while on hunting expedition, राजानः kings, कामरूपिणा assuming any form at his free will, अनेन by him, पापेन malicious, वने in the forest, उपाधिना deceitfully, निहताः killed.

Meaning

Many kings, while on hunting expedition in the forest, have been deceitfully killed by malicious Maricha, who could assume any form at his free will.

AK-43-6Aranya Kanda 43.6

अस्य मायाविदो मायामृगरूपमिदं कृतम्। भानुमत्पुरुषव्याघ्र गन्धर्वपुरसन्निभम्।।3.43.6।।

asya māyāvido māyāmṛgarūpamidṃ kṛtam| bhānumatpuruṣavyāghra gandharvapurasannibham||3.43.6||

Translation

पुरुषव्याघ्र O tiger among men, मायाविदः deceitful one, अस्य his, भानुमत् radiant, गन्धर्वपुरसन्निभम् like the city of the gandharvas (which does not exist), इदम् this kind, मायामृगरूपम् form of an illusory deer, कृतम् has assumed

Meaning

O tiger among men, this deceitful demon (Maricha) has been transformed into the illusory form of a radiant deer which does not exist.

AK-43-7Aranya Kanda 43.7

मृगो ह्येवंविधो रत्नविचित्रो नास्ति राघव। जगत्यां जगतीनाथ मायैषा हि न संशयः।।3.43.7।।

mṛgo hyevṃvidho ratnavicitro nāsti rāghava| jagatyāṃ jagatīnātha māyaiṣā hi na sṃśayḥ||3.43.7||

Translation

जगतीनाथ O lord of the world, राघव Rama, जगत्याम् in the world, रत्नविचित्रः one with wonderful and sparkling gems, एवंविधः this kind of, मृगः deer, नास्ति हि does not exist, एषा this is, माया trick, संशयः doubt, न not,

Meaning

O Rama, lord of the world nowhere on earth does exist this kind of wonderful deer sparkling with gems. That it is a mere trick, an illusion there is no doubt.

AK-43-8Aranya Kanda 43.8

एवं ब्रुवाणं काकुत्स्थं प्रतिवार्य शुचिस्मिता। उवाच सीता संहृष्टा चर्मणा हृतचेतना।।3.43.8।।

evṃ bruvāṇṃ kākutsthṃ prativārya śucismitā| uvāca sītā sṃhṛṣṭā carmaṇā hṛtacetanā||3.43.8||

Translation

शुचिस्मिता a lady with a pure smile, चर्मणा by the beauty of the skin, हृतचेतना who lost her sense of descrimination, हृष्टा a joyful, सीता Sita, एवम् in that way, ब्रुवाणम् saying, काकुत्स्थम् Rama, प्रतिवार्य intervened, उवाच said.

Meaning

Sita was too enchanted by the skin of the deer to retain her sense of discrimination. Intervening, she said to Rama joyfully with a pure smile on her face:

AK-43-9Aranya Kanda 43.9

आर्यपुत्राभिरामोऽसौ मृगो हरति मे मनः। आनयैनं महाबाहो क्रीडार्थं नो भविष्यति।।3.43.9।।

āryaputrābhirāmo'sau mṛgo harati me manḥ| ānayainṃ mahābāho krīḍārthṃ no bhaviṣyati||3.43.9||

Translation

आर्यपुत्र O prince, अभिरामः attractive, असौ this, मृगः deer, मे to me, मनः mind, हरति captivating, महाबाहो O longarmed Rama, एनम् this animal, आनय bring, नः our, क्रीडार्थम् playmate, भविष्यति will be.

Meaning

O prince O longarmed one, this deer has captivated my mind. Fetch him for me.This will be our playmate.

AK-43-10Aranya Kanda 43.10

इहाश्रमपदेऽस्माकं बहवः पुण्यदर्शनाः। मृगाश्चरन्ति सहिताश्चमरास्सृमरास्तथा।।3.43.10।।

ihāśramapade'smākṃ bahavḥ puṇyadarśanāḥ| mṛgāścaranti sahitāścamarāssṛmarāstathā||3.43.10||

Translation

अस्माकम् for us, इह here, आश्रमपदे at the hermitage, पुण्यदर्शनाः piouslooking, बहवः many, मृगाः deer, सृमराः antelopes, तथा similarly, चमराः yaks, सहिताः in herds, चरन्ति wandering.

Meaning

Here at the hermitage there are many lovely deer, yaks and antelopes wandering in herds.

AK-43-11Aranya Kanda 43.11

ऋक्षाः पृषतसङ्घाश्च वानराः किन्नरास्तथा। विचरन्ति महाबाहो रुपश्रेष्ठा मनोहराः।।3.43.11।।

ṛkṣāḥ pṛṣatasaṅghāśca vānarāḥ kinnarāstathā| vicaranti mahābāho rupaśreṣṭhā manoharāḥ||3.43.11||

Translation

महाबाहो O longarmed one, रूपश्रेष्ठाः best of forms, मनोहराः enchanting, ऋक्षाः bear, पृषतसङ्घाश्च herds of spotted antelopes, वानराः monkeys, तथा similarly, किन्नराः kinneras, विचरन्ति wander about.

Meaning

O longarmed one, most beautiful animals like bears, antelopes and groups of monkeys and kinneras are wandering here.

AK-43-12Aranya Kanda 43.12

न चास्य सदृशो राजन्दृष्टपूर्वो मृगो मया। तेजसा क्षमया दीप्त्या यथाऽयं मृगसत्तमः।।3.43.12।।

na cāsya sadṛśo rājandṛṣṭapūrvo mṛgo mayā| tejasā kṣamayā dīptyā yathā'yṃ mṛgasattamḥ||3.43.12||

Translation

राजन् O Prince, अयम् this, मृगसत्तमः great deer, यथा as, तेजसा by lustre, क्षमया by forbearance, दीप्त्या by glitter, अस्य his, सदृशः equal, मृगः animal, मया by me, न दृष्टपूर्वः never seen before.

Meaning

O prince this kind of beautiful, tame and glittering deer I have never seen before.

AK-43-13Aranya Kanda 43.13

नानावर्णविचित्राङ्गो रत्नबिन्दुसमाचितः। द्योतयन्वनमव्यग्रं शोभते शशिसन्निभः।।3.43.13।।

nānāvarṇavicitrāṅgo ratnabindusamācitḥ| dyotayanvanamavyagrṃ śobhate śaśisannibhḥ||3.43.13||

Translation

नानावर्णविचित्राङ्गः one whose body is glittering with different colours, रत्नबिन्दुसमाचितः speckled with gems of different kinds, शशिसन्निभः like the Moon, अव्यग्रम् cool, वनम् forest, द्योतयन् while illuminating, शोभते shining.

Meaning

Its body glittering with different colours, speckled with gems of different kinds, is like the Moon shining and illuminating the forest.

AK-43-14Aranya Kanda 43.14

अहो रूपमहो लक्ष्मीस्स्वरसम्पच्च शोभना। मृगोऽद्भुतो विचित्राङ्गो हृदयं हरतीव मे।।3.43.14।।

aho rūpamaho lakṣmīssvarasampacca śobhanā| mṛgo'dbhuto vicitrāṅgo hṛdayṃ haratīva me||3.43.14||

Translation

रूपम् form, अहो Oh, लक्ष्मीः beauty, अहो Oh, स्वरसम्पच्च rich call, शोभना is delightful, अद्भुतः wonderful, विचित्राङ्गः graceful limbs, मृगः deer, मे to me, हृदयम् heart, हरतीव as if captivating.

Meaning

Oh what a beauty, Oh what rich call what delightful, wonderful, graceful limbs This deer captivates my heart.

AK-43-15Aranya Kanda 43.15

यदि ग्रहणमभ्येति जीवन्नेव मृगस्तव। आश्चर्यभूतं भवति विस्मयं जनयिष्यति।।3.43.15।।

yadi grahaṇamabhyeti jīvanneva mṛgastava| āścaryabhūtṃ bhavati vismayṃ janayiṣyati||3.43.15||

Translation

मृगः deer, जीवन्नेव alive, तव your, ग्रहणम् caught, अभ्येति यदि if it can be obtained, आश्चर्यभूतम् thrilling, भवति will be, विस्मयम् wonder, जनयिष्यति will create.

Meaning

If this deer can be caught alive, it will be thrilling, it will work wonders.

AK-43-16Aranya Kanda 43.16

समाप्तवनवासानां राज्यस्थानां च नः पुनः। अन्तःपुरविभूषार्थो मृग एष भविष्यति।।3.43.16।।

samāptavanavāsānāṃ rājyasthānāṃ ca nḥ punḥ| antḥpuravibhūṣārtho mṛga eṣa bhaviṣyati||3.43.16||

Translation

एषः this, मृगः deer, समाप्तवनवासानाम् after the completion of exile in the forest, पुनः again, राज्यस्थानाम् and established in the kingdom, नः for us, अन्तःपुरविभूषार्थः add beauty to the harem, भविष्यति will be.

Meaning

After the completion of exile in the forest, when we are back in the kingdom, this deer will add beauty to the harem.

AK-43-17Aranya Kanda 43.17

भरतस्यार्यपुत्रस्य श्वश्रूणां मम च प्रभो। मृगरूपमिदं व्यक्तं विस्मयं जनयिष्यति।।3.43.17।।

bharatasyāryaputrasya śvaśrūṇāṃ mama ca prabho| mṛgarūpamidṃ vyaktṃ vismayṃ janayiṣyati||3.43.17||

Translation

प्रभो O king, इदम् this, मृगरूपम् this form of a deer, भरतस्य to Bharata, आर्यपुत्रस्य for you, श्वश्रूणाम् for mothersinlaw, मम च to me, व्यक्तम् certainly, विस्मयम् wonder, जनयिष्यति will generate.

Meaning

O king this deer will create amazement in Bharata, in mothersinlaw, in you and in me as well.

AK-43-18Aranya Kanda 43.18

जीवन्न यदि तेऽभ्येति ग्रहणं मृगसत्तमः। अजिनं नरशार्दूल रुचिरं मे भविष्यति।।3.43.18।।

jīvanna yadi te'bhyeti grahaṇṃ mṛgasattamḥ| ajinṃ naraśārdūla rucirṃ me bhaviṣyati||3.43.18||

Translation

नरशार्दूल O tiger among men, मृगसत्तमः great deer, जीवन् with life, ते to you, ग्रहणम् catch, न not, अभ्येति यदि can be caught, मे for me, रुचिरम् this beautiful, अजिनम् skin, भविष्यति will be.

Meaning

O best among men, if this great deer cannot be captured alive, I will wear its beautiful skin.

AK-43-19Aranya Kanda 43.19

निहतस्यास्य सत्त्वस्य जाम्बूनदमयत्वचि। शष्पबृस्यां विनीतायामिच्छाम्यहमुपासितुम्।।3.43.19।।

nihatasyāsya sattvasya jāmbūnadamayatvaci| śaṣpabṛsyāṃ vinītāyāmicchāmyahamupāsitum||3.43.19||

Translation

शष्पबृस्यां on a cushion of tender grass, विनीतायाम् it spread, निहतस्य if killed, अस्य सत्त्वस्य this animal's, जाम्बूनदमयत्वचि its golden skin, अहम् I, उपासितुम् to sit, इच्छामि desire.

Meaning

If this animal is killed and its golden skin is spread on a tender grass cushion, there will I like to sit.

AK-43-20Aranya Kanda 43.20

कामवृत्तमिदं रौद्रं स्त्रीणामसदृशं मतम्। वपुषा त्वस्य सत्त्वस्य विस्मयो जनितो मम।।3.43.20।।

kāmavṛttamidṃ raudrṃ strīṇāmasadṛśṃ matam| vapuṣā tvasya sattvasya vismayo janito mama||3.43.20||

Translation

रौद्रम् terrible, इदम् this, कामवृत्तम् arising out of desire, स्त्रीणाम् for a woman, असदृशम् not desirable, मतम् opinion, तु you, अस्य even so, सत्त्वस्य this animal's, वपुषा beauty of skin, मम me, विस्मयः amazing, जनितः creating.

Meaning

This kind of request arising out of a woman's desire may sound terrible, still then the beauty of this animal's skin has produced in me a wonder.

AK-43-21Aranya Kanda 43.21

तेन काञ्चनवर्णेन मणिप्रवरशृङ्गिणा। तरुणादित्यवर्णेन नक्षत्रपथवर्चसा।।3.43.21।। बभूव राघवस्यापि मनो विस्मयमागतम्।

tena kāñcanavarṇena maṇipravaraśṛṅgiṇā| taruṇādityavarṇena nakṣatrapathavarcasā||3.43.21|| babhūva rāghavasyāpi mano vismayamāgatam|

Translation

काञ्चनवर्णेन by its golden colour, मणिप्रवरशृङ्गिणा horned with excellent gems, तरुणादित्यवर्णेन by its colour resembling the rising Sun, नक्षत्रपथवर्चसा by shining like the milkyway, तेन by, राघवस्य of Rama, मनः अपि mind also, विस्मयम् amazement, आगतम् arose.

Meaning

By his golden colour resembling the rising Sun, by his horns with excellent gems shining like the milkyway, even Rama's mind was wonderstruck.

AK-43-22-23Aranya Kanda 43.22–23 (युग्मम्)

एवं सीतावचः श्रुत्वा तं दृष्ट्वा मृगमद्भुतम्।।3.43.22।। लोभितस्तेन रूपेण सीतया च प्रचोदितः। उवाच राघवो हृष्टो भ्रातरं लक्ष्मणं वचः।।3.43.23।।

evṃ sītāvacḥ śrutvā tṃ dṛṣṭvā mṛgamadbhutam||3.43.22|| lobhitastena rūpeṇa sītayā ca pracoditḥ| uvāca rāghavo hṛṣṭo bhrātarṃ lakṣmaṇṃ vacḥ||3.43.23||

Translation

राघवः Rama, एवम् in that manner, सीतावचः Sita's words, श्रुत्वा listening, अद्भुतम् wonderful, तं मृगम् that deer, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, तेन रूपेण by its appearance, लोभितः tempted, सीतया च by Sita, प्रचोदितः prompted, हृष्टः gladly, भ्रातरम् brother, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, वचः words, उवाच said.

Meaning

On hearing Sita's words and seeing the wonderful deer, Rama was tempted by its appearance.Prompted by Sita,he joyfully said this to Lakshmana:

AK-43-24-25Aranya Kanda 43.24–25 (युग्मम्)

पश्य लक्ष्मण वैदेह्याः स्पृहां मृगगतामिमाम्। रूपश्रेष्ठतया ह्येष मृगोऽद्य न भविष्यति।।3.43.24।। न वने नन्दनोद्धेशे न चैत्ररथसंश्रये। कुतःपृथिव्यां सौमित्रे योऽस्य कश्चित्समो मृगः।।3.43.25।।

paśya lakṣmaṇa vaidehyāḥ spṛhāṃ mṛgagatāmimām| rūpaśreṣṭhatayā hyeṣa mṛgo'dya na bhaviṣyati||3.43.24|| na vane nandanoddheśe na caitrarathasṃśraye| kutḥpṛthivyāṃ saumitre yo'sya kaścitsamo mṛgḥ||3.43.25||

Translation

लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, वैदेह्याः Sita's, मृगगताम् pertaining to this deer, स्पृहाम् desire, पश्य you may see, सौमित्रे Lakshmana, अद्य now, रूपश्रेष्ठतया due to its excellent beauty, एषः this, मृगः deer, वने in the forest, न भविष्यति will not be found, नन्दनोद्धेशे in the Nandana garden of Indra, न not, चैत्ररथसंश्रये in Chaitraratha,( garden of Kubera), न not, यः any such, अस्य its, समः equal, पृथिव्याम् on the earth, कुतः where do (we find).

Meaning

O Lakshmana, see the eagerness of Sita. Such a deer of exceptional beauty will not be found in this forest. There is no equal to this animal even in the Nandan garden of Indra, or the Chaitraratha, the garden of Kubera. Where can such an animal be found on earth?

AK-43-26Aranya Kanda 43.26

प्रतिलोमानुलोमाश्च रुचिरा रोमराजयः। शोभन्ते मृगमाश्रित्य चित्राः कनकबिन्दवः।।3.43.26।।

pratilomānulomāśca rucirā romarājayḥ| śobhante mṛgamāśritya citrāḥ kanakabindavḥ||3.43.26||

Translation

प्रतिलोमानुलोमाः च hair bent in the opposite direction and hair bent in the natural order, रुचिराः beautiful, कनकबिन्दवः golden spots, चित्राः beautiful, रोमराजयः the stretches of hair on the body, मृगम् the deer, आश्रित्य resorting to, शोभन्ते are looking delightful.

Meaning

The stretches of hair on the deer's body bent both in the natural order and in the opposite direction look beautiful. The spots of gold on the skin are wonderful.

AK-43-27Aranya Kanda 43.27

पश्यास्य जृम्भमाणस्य दीप्तामग्निशिखोपमाम्। जिह्वां मुखान्निस्सरन्तीं मेघादिव शतह्रदाम्।।3.43.27।।

paśyāsya jṛmbhamāṇasya dīptāmagniśikhopamām| jihvāṃ mukhānnissarantīṃ meghādiva śatahradām||3.43.27||

Translation

जृम्भमाणस्य while it is yawning, अस्य its, मुखात् from the mouth, निस्सरन्तीम् stretching, दीप्ताम् glowing, अग्निशिखोपमाम् like flaming fires, मेघात् from the cloud, शतह्रदाम् इव like the lightning, जिह्वाम् tongue, पश्य see.

Meaning

Look at his tongue stretched out of the mouth while yawning. It is glowing like flaming fire. It is like the lightning sparkling in the cloud.

AK-43-28Aranya Kanda 43.28

मसारगल्लर्कमुखश्शङ्खमुक्तानिभोदरः। कस्य नामाभिरूप्योऽसौ न मनो लोभयेन्मृगः।।3.43.28।।

masāragallarkamukhaśśaṅkhamuktānibhodarḥ| kasya nāmābhirūpyo'sau na mano lobhayenmṛgḥ||3.43.28||

Translation

मसारगल्लर्कमुखः face like a drinking pot made of emerald, शङ्खमुक्तानिभोदरः belly like conch or pearl, अभिरूप्यः indescribable, असौ मृगः this deer, कस्य नाम whose, मनः mind, न लोभयेत् not be attracted.

Meaning

His face is a drinking pot of emerald, the belly is a conch or a pearl. Whose mind will not be attracted by this indescribable beauty ?

AK-43-29Aranya Kanda 43.29

कस्य रूपमिदं दृष्ट्वा जाम्बूनद मयप्रभम्। नानारत्नमयं दिव्यं न मनो विस्मयं व्रजेत्।।3.43.29।।

kasya rūpamidṃ dṛṣṭvā jāmbūnada mayaprabham| nānāratnamayṃ divyṃ na mano vismayṃ vrajet||3.43.29||

Translation

जाम्बूनदमयप्रभम् glittering like the lustre of gold, नानारत्नमयम् adorned with a variety of gems, दिव्यम् divine, इदम् this, रूपम् beauty, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, कस्य whose, मनः heart, विस्मयम् wonder, न व्रजेत् not attain.

Meaning

Whose mind will not be filled with wonder on seeing this divine beauty glittering like lustrous gold and studded with a variety of gems ?

AK-43-30Aranya Kanda 43.30

मांसहेतोरपि मृगान्विनोदार्थं च धन्वनः। घ्नन्ति लक्ष्मण राजानो मृगयायां महावने।।3.43.30।।

māṃsahetorapi mṛgānvinodārthṃ ca dhanvanḥ| ghnanti lakṣmaṇa rājāno mṛgayāyāṃ mahāvane||3.43.30||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, राजानः king, महावने in a great forest, मृगयायाम् in hunting expedition, मांसहेतोः for meat, धन्वनः archers, विनोदार्थम् for sporting, मृगान् deer, घ्नन्ति will kill.

Meaning

O Lakshmana kings who wield bows in hunting expeditions kill deer in the forest for sport as well as for venison.

AK-43-31Aranya Kanda 43.31

धनानि व्यवसायेन विचीयन्ते महावने। धातवो विविधाश्चापि मणिरत्नसुवर्णिनः।।3.43.31।।

dhanāni vyavasāyena vicīyante mahāvane| dhātavo vividhāścāpi maṇiratnasuvarṇinḥ||3.43.31||

Translation

महावने in the huge forest, व्यवसायेन with great effort, धनानि wealth, मणिरत्नसुवर्णिनः gems and gold etc, विविधाः of variety , धातवः precious minerals, विचीयन्ते will be collected.

Meaning

From huge forests a variety of mineral wealth consisting of gems, stones and gold are collected with great effort.

AK-43-32Aranya Kanda 43.32

तत्सारमखिलं नृ़णां धनं निचयवर्धनम्। मनसा चिन्तितं सर्वं यथा शुक्रस्य लक्ष्मण।।3.43.32।।

tatsāramakhilṃ nṛ़ṇāṃ dhanṃ nicayavardhanam| manasā cintitṃ sarvṃ yathā śukrasya lakṣmaṇa||3.43.32||

Translation

लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, अखिलम् all, तत् all that, सारम् essence, धनम् wealth, नृ़णाम् of men, मनसा in the mind, चिन्तितम् thought over, सर्वम् all, शुक्रस्य यथा like Venus (Venus controls prosperity leading to procreation), निचयवर्धनम् growth of treasure.

Meaning

O Lakshmana the essence of forest wealth is mineral wealth, which helps the growth of the treasury. It is conceived mentally as in the case of Venus.

AK-43-33Aranya Kanda 43.33

अर्थी येनार्थकृत्येन संव्रजत्यविचारयन्। तमर्थमर्थशास्त्रज्ञाः प्राहुरर्थ्याश्च लक्ष्मण।।3.43.33।।

arthī yenārthakṛtyena sṃvrajatyavicārayan| tamarthamarthaśāstrajñāḥ prāhurarthyāśca lakṣmaṇa||3.43.33||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, अर्थी materialist, येन by whichever, अर्थकृत्येन done for material wealth, अविचारयन् without thinking, संव्रजति moves about, तम् that, अर्थशास्त्रज्ञाः economists, अर्थ्याः scientists, अर्थम् material, प्राहुः called.

Meaning

A materialist moves about thoughtlessly for making money. Economists call it material wealth.

AK-43-34Aranya Kanda 43.34

एतस्य मृगरत्नस्य परार्ध्ये काञ्चनत्वचि। उपवेक्ष्यति वैदेही मया सह सुमध्यमा।।3.43.34।।

etasya mṛgaratnasya parārdhye kāñcanatvaci| upavekṣyati vaidehī mayā saha sumadhyamā||3.43.34||

Translation

सुमध्यमा a lady of slender waist, वैदेही Vaidehi, एतस्य of this, मृगरत्नस्य of the gem of a deer, परार्ध्ये in an excellent, काञ्चनत्वचि in a golden skin, मया सह with me also, उपवेक्ष्यति will sit.

AK-43-35Aranya Kanda 43.35

न कादली न प्रियकी न प्रवेणी न चाविकी। भवेदेतस्य सदृशी स्पर्शनेनेति मे मतिः।।3.43.35।।

na kādalī na priyakī na praveṇī na cāvikī| bhavedetasya sadṛśī sparśaneneti me matiḥ||3.43.35||

Translation

स्पर्शनेन by touch, कादली blackstriped antelope, एतस्य of this, सदृशी comparable, न भवेत् will be there, प्रियकी goat's, न or even, प्रवेणी a hairy one, न not, आविकी च of a sheep, न not, इति like this, मे I, मतिः I think.

Meaning

The skins of various types of deer like Priyaki, Kadali or goats or sheep cannot be compared in softness to the skin of this deer.

AK-43-36Aranya Kanda 43.36

एष चैव मृगश्श्रीमान् यश्च दिव्यो नभश्चरः। उभावेतौ मृगौ दिव्यौ तारामृगमहीमृगौ।।3.43.36।।

eṣa caiva mṛgaśśrīmān yaśca divyo nabhaścarḥ| ubhāvetau mṛgau divyau tārāmṛgamahīmṛgau||3.43.36||

Translation

श्रीमान् majestic, एषः this one, मृगश्चैव that deer too, नभश्चरः flying in the sky, यश्च whoever, दिव्यः divine, दिव्यौ both are divine, एतौ these two, तारामृगमहीमृगौ deer of the stars and deer of the earth, उभौ both, मृगौ deer.

Meaning

This majestic deer and the deer flying in heaven (the deer's figure seen in the Moon called Mrgasira) both the deer of the star in the sky and the deer of the earth are divine.

AK-43-37Aranya Kanda 43.37

यदि वाऽयं तथा यन्मां भवेद्वदसि लक्ष्मण। मायैषा राक्षसस्येति कर्तव्योस्य वधो मया।।3.43.37।।

yadi vā'yṃ tathā yanmāṃ bhavedvadasi lakṣmaṇa| māyaiṣā rākṣasasyeti kartavyosya vadho mayā||3.43.37||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, एषा this, राक्षसस्य of a demon, माया an illusion, इति thus, माम् me, यत् which, वदसि you say, तथा so also, अयम् surely, भवेद्यदि if it is, वा or, मया by me, अस्य his, वधः death, कर्तव्यः should be done.

Meaning

Lakshmana, as you say, if it is the illusion of a demon, even then it should be killed by me.

AK-43-38Aranya Kanda 43.38

एतेन हि नृशंसेन मारीचेनाकृतात्मना। वने विचरता पूर्वं हिंसिता मुनिपुङ्गवाः।।3.43.38।।

etena hi nṛśṃsena mārīcenākṛtātmanā| vane vicaratā pūrvṃ hiṃsitā munipuṅgavāḥ||3.43.38||

Translation

नृशंसेन by cruel, अकृतात्मना by evilminded, वने in the forest, विचरता while wandering, एतेन by him, मारीचेन Maricha, पूर्वम् earlier, मुनिपुङ्गवाः great sages, हिंसिताः are harassed.

Meaning

The great sages were tortured and killed earlier by this cruel, evilminded Maricha while wandering in the forest.

AK-43-39Aranya Kanda 43.39

उत्थाय बहवो येन मृगयायां जनाधिपाः। निहताः परमेष्वासास्तस्माद्वध्यस्त्वयं मृगः।।3.43.39।।

utthāya bahavo yena mṛgayāyāṃ janādhipāḥ| nihatāḥ parameṣvāsāstasmādvadhyastvayṃ mṛgḥ||3.43.39||

Translation

येन since, उत्थाय after rising, मृगयायाम् during hunting expedition, बहवः many, परमेष्वासाः great archers, जनाधिपाः kings, निहताः killed, तस्मात् therefore, मृगः deer, वध्यः तु should be killed.

Meaning

Many kings who were great archers who set out on hunting expedition were killed by him. Therefore, this animal deserves to be killed.

AK-43-40Aranya Kanda 43.40

पुरस्तादिह वातापिः परिभूय तपस्विनः। उदरस्थो द्विजान्हन्तिस्वगर्भोऽश्वतरीमिव।।3.43.40।।

purastādiha vātāpiḥ paribhūya tapasvinḥ| udarastho dvijānhantisvagarbho'śvatarīmiva||3.43.40||

Translation

पुरस्तात् earlier, इह here, वातापिः Vatapi, तपस्विनः ascetics, परिभूय defeating, उदरस्थः stationed in the stomach, अश्वतरीम् female mule, स्वगर्भः इव as its own womb, द्विजान् brahmins, हन्ति killed.

Meaning

Earlier in this forest, Vatapi used to humiliate the ascetic brahmins and to kill them by entering into their stomach like a womb killing the female mule.

AK-43-41Aranya Kanda 43.41

स कदाचिच्चिराल्लोभादाससाद महामुनिम्। अगस्त्यं तेजसा युक्तं भक्षस्तस्य बभूव ह।।3.43.41।।

sa kadāciccirāllobhādāsasāda mahāmunim| agastyṃ tejasā yuktṃ bhakṣastasya babhūva ha||3.43.41||

Translation

सः that Vatapi, चिरात् after a long time, कदाचित् once, लोभात् greedily, तेजसा by prowess, युक्तम् one endowed, महामुनिम् great sage, अगस्त्यम् Agasthya, आससाद reached, तस्य his, भक्षः food, बभूव ह became.

Meaning

That Vatapi after a long time, once greedily entered into the stomach of the great lustrous sage Agastya and became his food.

AK-43-42Aranya Kanda 43.42

समुत्थाने व तद्रूपं कर्तुकामं समीक्ष्य तम्। उत्स्मयित्वा तु भगवान्वातापिमिदमब्रवीत्।।3.43.42।।

samutthāne va tadrūpṃ kartukāmṃ samīkṣya tam| utsmayitvā tu bhagavānvātāpimidamabravīt||3.43.42||

Translation

समुत्थाने when he rose, तत् that, रूपम् form, कर्तुकामम् to turn into real form, तम् him, वातापिम् Vatapi, समीक्ष्य after seeing, भगवान् venerable sage, उत्स्मयित्वा by smiling at him, इदम् this, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

When the venerable sage Agastya got up (after eating), he observed Vatapi wishing to turn into his real form. So smiling at him, he said:

AK-43-43Aranya Kanda 43.43

त्वयाऽविगण्य वातापे परिभूतास्स्वतेजसा। जीवलोके द्विजश्रेष्ठास्तस्मादसि जरां गतः।।3.43.43।।

tvayā'vigaṇya vātāpe paribhūtāssvatejasā| jīvaloke dvijaśreṣṭhāstasmādasi jarāṃ gatḥ||3.43.43||

Translation

वातापे O Vatapi, जीवलेके in the world of living beings, द्विजश्रेष्ठाः best of brahmins, त्वया by you, अविगण्य disregarding, स्वतेजसा with your power, परिभूताः are insulted, तस्मात् on account of that, जरां गतः got digested, असि you are.

Meaning

'O Vatapi you killed the best of brahmins living in this world, disregarding them because of your power. Hence you were digested by me.'

AK-43-44Aranya Kanda 43.44

तदेवं न भवेद्रक्षोवातापिरिव लक्ष्मण। मद्विधं योऽतिमन्येत धर्मनित्यं जितेन्द्रियम्।।3.43.44।। भवेद्धतोऽयं वातापिरगस्त्येनेव मां गतः।

tadevṃ na bhavedrakṣovātāpiriva lakṣmaṇa| madvidhṃ yo'timanyeta dharmanityṃ jitendriyam||3.43.44|| bhaveddhato'yṃ vātāpiragastyeneva māṃ gatḥ|

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, एवम् in that way, वातापिरिव just as Vatapi, तत् that, रक्षः demon, न भवेत् not live, यः who, धर्मनित्यम् always righteous, जितेन्द्रियम् senses controlled , मद्विधम् my kind, अतिमन्येत whoever violates, अयम् this, मां me, गतः gone, अगस्त्येन by Agastya, वातापिरिव like Vatapi, हतः be killed, भवेत् will be.

Meaning

O Lakshmana just like Vatapi, this demon will not live. Whoever violates a person of my kind who is ever righteous and selfcontrolled will be killed

AK-43-45Aranya Kanda 43.45

इह त्वं भव सन्नद्दो यन्त्रितो रक्ष मैथिलीम्।।3.43.45।। अस्यामायत्तमस्माकं यत्कृत्यं रघुनन्दन।

iha tvṃ bhava sannaddo yantrito rakṣa maithilīm||3.43.45|| asyāmāyattamasmākṃ yatkṛtyṃ raghunandana|

Translation

रघुनन्दन O delight of the Raghu dynasty, त्वम् you, इह here, सन्नद्धः be ready, भव your, यन्त्रितः very alert, मैथिलीम् Maithili, रक्ष protect, अस्माकम् for us, यत् whatever, कृत्यम् is the task, अस्याम् in her, आयत्तम् is dependent.

Meaning

O Lakshmana, delight of the Raghu dynasty, be very alert and restrained and protect Sita. Whatever duty we have to perform depends on her protection.

AK-43-46Aranya Kanda 43.46

अहमेनं वधिष्यामि ग्रहीष्याम्यपि वा मृगम्।।3.43.46।। यावद्गच्छामि सौमित्रे मृगमानयितुं द्रुतम्।

ahamenṃ vadhiṣyāmi grahīṣyāmyapi vā mṛgam||3.43.46|| yāvadgacchāmi saumitre mṛgamānayituṃ drutam|

Translation

सौमित्रे Lakshmana, अहम् I, एनम् him, मृगम् deer, वधिष्यामि will kill, अपि वा or else, ग्रहीष्यामि will catch, मृगम् the deer, आनयितुम् to bring, द्रुतम् quickly, यावद्गच्छामि I will go to get the deer.

Meaning

O Lakshmana I will go quickly and either kill the deer or catch it. Now let me go.

AK-43-47Aranya Kanda 43.47

पश्य लक्ष्मण वैदेहीं मृगत्वचि गतस्पृहाम्।।3.43.47।। त्वचा प्रधानया ह्येष मृगोऽद्य न भविष्यति।

paśya lakṣmaṇa vaidehīṃ mṛgatvaci gataspṛhām||3.43.47|| tvacā pradhānayā hyeṣa mṛgo'dya na bhaviṣyati|

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, मृगत्वचि at this deerskin, गतस्पृहाम् desire is fixed, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, पश्य see, प्रधानया ardently, त्वचा by his skin, एषः मृगः of this deer, अद्य now, न भविष्यति will not live.

Meaning

See, how Vaidehi ardently longs for the skin of this deer I will not let the animal live, O Lakshmana

AK-43-48-49Aranya Kanda 43.48–49 (युग्मम्)

अप्रमत्तेन ते भाव्यमाश्रमस्थेन सीतया।।3.43.48।। यावत्पृषतमेकेन सायकेन निहन्म्यहम्। हत्वैतच्चर्म चादाय शीघ्रमेष्यामि लक्ष्मण।।3.43.49।।

apramattena te bhāvyamāśramasthena sītayā||3.43.48|| yāvatpṛṣatamekena sāyakena nihanmyaham| hatvaitaccarma cādāya śīghrameṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa||3.43.49||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, आश्रमस्थेन staying at the hermitage, ते by you, सीतया with Sita, अप्रमत्तेन vigilant, भाव्यम् should be, पृषतम् speckled antelope, एकेन by only one, बाणेन by arrow, अहम् I, यावत् by the time, निहन्मि I will kill, हत्वा after killing, एतच्चर्म his skin, आदाय getting, शीघ्रम् quickly, एष्यामि I will come.

Meaning

Keep vigil over Sita at the hermitage, O Lakshmana I will certainly kill the speckled antelope with a single arrow, get his skin and come back quickly.

AK-43-50Aranya Kanda 43.50

प्रदक्षिणेनातिबलेन पक्षिणा जटायुषा बुद्धिमता च लक्ष्मण। भवाप्रमत्तः परिगृह्य मैथिलीं प्रतिक्षणं सर्वत एव शङ्कितः।।3.43.50।।

pradakṣiṇenātibalena pakṣiṇā jaṭāyuṣā buddhimatā ca lakṣmaṇa| bhavāpramattḥ parigṛhya maithilīṃ pratikṣaṇṃ sarvata eva śaṅkitḥ||3.43.50||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, मैथिलीम् Sita, परिगृह्य guarding her, प्रतिक्षणम् every moment, सर्वतः एव from all directions, शङ्कितः suspecting danger, प्रदक्षिणेन going round, अतिबलेन by the mighty, बुद्धिमता by wise, पक्षिणा by the bird, जटायुषा Jatayu, अप्रमत्तः vigilant, भव be.

Meaning

O Lakshmana, be vigilant in guarding Sita, suspecting danger every moment from all directions. Take the help of Jatayu, the mighty and wise bird who will be on his rounds. इत्याषे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे त्रिचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fortythird sarga in Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
