AK-40-1Aranya Kanda 40.1

मारीचेन तु तद्वाक्यं क्षमं युक्तं च निशाचरः। उक्तो न प्रतिजग्राह मर्तुकाम इवौषधम्।।3.40.1।।

mārīcena tu tadvākyṃ kṣamṃ yuktṃ ca niśācarḥ| ukto na pratijagrāha martukāma ivauṣadham||3.40.1||

Translation

उक्तः spoken, निशाचरः demon, (रावणः Ravana), मारीचेन by Maricha, क्षमम् competent, युक्तं च suitable, तत् that, वाक्यम् advice, मर्तुकामः one who wishes to die, औषधम् इव like medicine, न प्रतिजग्राह did not accept৷৷

Meaning

The demon Ravana did not heed the appropriate advice of the competent Maricha just like a man wishing to die refuses medicine.

AK-40-2Aranya Kanda 40.2

तं पथ्यहितवक्तारं मारीचं राक्षसाधिपः। अब्रवीत्परुषं वाक्यमयुक्तं कालचोदितः।।3.40.2।।

tṃ pathyahitavaktārṃ mārīcṃ rākṣasādhipḥ| abravītparuṣṃ vākyamayuktṃ kālacoditḥ||3.40.2||

Translation

राक्षसाधिपः king of the demons, कालचोदितः driven by fate, पथ्यहितवक्तारम् to one who spoke salutary and beneficial words, तं मारीचम् that Maricha, अयुक्तम् not appropriate, परुषम् harsh, वाक्यम् word, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

The king of the demons, driven by fate, replied with improper and harsh words to Maricha whose advice was salutary and beneficial to him :

AK-40-3Aranya Kanda 40.3

यत्किलैतदयुक्तार्थं मारीच मयि कथ्यते। वाक्यं निष्फलमत्यर्थमुप्तं बीजमिवोषरे।।3.40.3।।

yatkilaitadayuktārthṃ mārīca mayi kathyate| vākyṃ niṣphalamatyarthamuptṃ bījamivoṣare||3.40.3||

Translation

मारीच O Maricha, अयुक्तार्थम् in appropriate, यत् which, वाक्यम् words, मयि towards me, कथ्यते is being said, ऊषरे in saline soil, उप्तम् sown, बीजमिव like the seed, अत्यर्थम् very much, निष्फलम् useless.

Meaning

O Maricha, the words addressed to me are not appropriate.Your advice is extremely fruitless like a seed sown in saline, barren soil.

AK-40-4Aranya Kanda 40.4

त्वद्वाक्यैर्न तु मां शक्यं भेत्तुं रामस्य संयुगे। पापशीलस्य मूर्खस्य मानुषस्य विशेषतः।।3.40.4।।

tvadvākyairna tu māṃ śakyṃ bhettuṃ rāmasya sṃyuge| pāpaśīlasya mūrkhasya mānuṣasya viśeṣatḥ||3.40.4||

Translation

त्वद्वाक्यैः by your words, पापशीलस्य of a sinner, मूर्खस्य of a foolish one, विशेषतः specially, मानुषस्य of a human being, रामस्य of Rama, माम् me, संयुगे in a combat, भेत्तुम् to break, न शक्यम् not possible.

Meaning

It is not possible to dissuade me from my encounter with Rama who is sinful, foolish and especially an ordinary human being.

AK-40-5Aranya Kanda 40.5

यस्त्यक्त्वा सुहृदो राज्यं मातरं पितरं तथा। स्त्रीवाक्यं प्राकृतं श्रुत्वा वनमेकपदे गतः।।3.40.5।।

yastyaktvā suhṛdo rājyṃ mātarṃ pitarṃ tathā| strīvākyṃ prākṛtṃ śrutvā vanamekapade gatḥ||3.40.5||

Translation

यः he who, प्राकृतम् ordinary, स्त्रीवाक्यम् woman's word, श्रुत्वा after hearing, सुहृदः friends, राज्यम् kingdom, मातरम् mother, तथा also, पितरम् father, त्यक्त्वा after leaving, एकपदे at once, वनम् to the forest, गतः went.

Meaning

On hearing the casual words of a woman, (this) Rama came to the forest at once, leaving his friends, kingdom, mother and father.

AK-40-6Aranya Kanda 40.6

अवश्यन्तु मया तस्य संयुगे खरघातिनः। प्राणैः प्रियतरा सीता हर्तव्या तव सन्निधौ।।3.40.6।।

avaśyantu mayā tasya sṃyuge kharaghātinḥ| prāṇaiḥ priyatarā sītā hartavyā tava sannidhau||3.40.6||

Translation

संयुगे in a war, खरघातिनः of one who killed Khara, तस्य his, प्राणैः more than his life, प्रियतरा dearer, (भार्या wife), सीता Sita, तव your, सन्निधौ in the presence, अवश्यम् surely, मया by myself, हर्तव्या will abduct.

Meaning

In your very presence I will surely abduct Sita, wife of Rama who killed Khara in war, Sita whom he loves more than his life.

AK-40-7Aranya Kanda 40.7

एवं मे निश्चिता बुद्धिर्हृदि मारीच वर्तते। न व्यावर्तयितुं शक्या सेन्द्रैरपि सुरासुरैः।।3.40.7।।

evṃ me niścitā buddhirhṛdi mārīca vartate| na vyāvartayituṃ śakyā sendrairapi surāsuraiḥ||3.40.7||

Translation

मारीच Maricha, मे my, बुद्धि mind, एवम् this way, निश्चिता made up, हृदि in my heart, वर्तते stop, सेन्द्रैः with Indra, सुरासुरैरपि deities or demons, व्यावर्तयितुम् to change, न शक्या not possible.

Meaning

O Maricha I have made up my mind that way. Even demons or deities including Indra cannot alter this decision of mine.

AK-40-8Aranya Kanda 40.8

दोषं गुणं वा सम्पृष्टस्त्वमेवं वक्तुमर्हसि। अपायं वाप्युपायं वा कार्यस्यास्य विनिश्चये।।3.40.8।।

doṣṃ guṇṃ vā sampṛṣṭastvamevṃ vaktumarhasi| apāyṃ vāpyupāyṃ vā kāryasyāsya viniścaye||3.40.8||

Translation

अस्य कार्यस्य in this task, विनिश्चये this decision, दोषम् demerits, गुणं वा or merit, अपायम् danger, उपायं वा or any way out, सम्पृष्टः asked of you, त्वम् you, एवम् in that way, वक्तुम् अर्हसि should say.

Meaning

If I asked you the merits or demerits, the risks involved or the way out while deciding a case, you should have said what you did.

AK-40-9Aranya Kanda 40.9

सम्पृष्टेन तु वक्तव्यं सचिवेन विपश्चिता। उद्यताञ्जलिना राज्ञे य इच्छेद्भूतिमात्मनः।।3.40.9।।

sampṛṣṭena tu vaktavyṃ sacivena vipaścitā| udyatāñjalinā rājñe ya icchedbhūtimātmanḥ||3.40.9||

Translation

यः whoever, आत्मनः his, भूतिम् riches, इच्छेत् wants, सम्पृष्टेन by him when asked, विपश्चिता by a wise man, सचिवेन by a minister, उद्यताञ्जलिना by him with folded palms, राज्ञे to the king, वक्तव्यम् be said.

Meaning

A wise counsellor should give advice to the king only when his opinion is sought and that too with folded hands, if he wishes his own prosperity.

AK-40-10Aranya Kanda 40.10

वाक्यमप्रितकूलं तु मृदुपूर्वं हितं शुभम्। उपचारेण युक्तं च वक्तव्यो वसुधाधिपः।।3.40.10।।

vākyamapritakūlṃ tu mṛdupūrvṃ hitṃ śubham| upacāreṇa yuktṃ ca vaktavyo vasudhādhipḥ||3.40.10||

Translation

वसुधाधिपः lord of the earth, अप्रतिकूलम् not unfavourable, मृदुपूर्वम् politely, हितम् welfare, शुभम् auspicious,उपचारेण with proper decorum, युक्तम् with, वाक्यम् word, वक्तव्यः suggested.

Meaning

A king should be addressed with politeness and decorum, with words not unfavourble intended for his good luck and wellbeing.

AK-40-11Aranya Kanda 40.11

सावमर्दं तु यद्वाक्यं मारीच हितमुच्यते। नाभिनन्दति तद्राजा मानार्हो मानवर्जितम्।।3.40.11।।

sāvamardṃ tu yadvākyṃ mārīca hitamucyate| nābhinandati tadrājā mānārho mānavarjitam||3.40.11||

Translation

मारीच O Maricha, मानवर्जितम् disrespectful, यत् whatever, हितम् good, वाक्यम् words, सावमर्दम् in an oppressive way, उच्यते when spoken, तत् that, मानार्हः who deserves respect, राजा king, नाभिनन्दति does not like.

Meaning

A king who deserves honour does not feel happy to hear even good words of advice if said in disrespectful or authoritarian way, O Maricha

AK-40-12Aranya Kanda 40.12

पञ्च रूपाणि राजानो धारयन्त्यमितौजसः। अग्नेरिन्द्रस्य सोमस्य वरुणस्य यमस्य च।।3.40.12।।

pañca rūpāṇi rājāno dhārayantyamitaujasḥ| agnerindrasya somasya varuṇasya yamasya ca||3.40.12||

Translation

अमितौजस: very powerful , राजानः kings, अग्नेः of fire, इन्द्रस्य of Indra, सोमस्य Moon's, वरुणस्य Varuna's, यमस्य च and of lord of death, पञ्च five, रूपाणि forms, धारयन्ति will assume.

Meaning

Very powerful kings assume five forms like fire, Indra, Moon, Varuna and Yama.

AK-40-13Aranya Kanda 40.13

औष्ण्यं तथा विक्रमं च सौम्यं दण्डं प्रसन्नताम्। धारयन्ति महात्मानो राजानः क्षणदाचर।।3.40.13।। तस्मात्सर्वास्ववस्थासु मान्याः पूज्याश्च पार्थिवाः।

auṣṇyṃ tathā vikramṃ ca saumyṃ daṇḍṃ prasannatām| dhārayanti mahātmāno rājānḥ kṣaṇadācara||3.40.13|| tasmātsarvāsvavasthāsu mānyāḥ pūjyāśca pārthivāḥ|

Translation

क्षणदाचर of demon, महात्मनः great self, राजानः kings, औष्ण्यम् heat, तथा similarly, विक्रमं च valour, सौम्यम् gentleness, दण्डम् command, प्रसन्नताम् grace, धारयन्ति possess, तस्मात् therefore, पार्थिवाः kings, सर्वासु at all, अवस्थासु stages, मान्याः deserve to be respected, पूज्याश्च worthy of reverence.

Meaning

Great kings possess heat, (of the firegod), valour (of Indra), coolness (of the Moon), command (of Varuna) and grace (of the Lord of death). Therefore kings at all stages deserve respect and reverence.

AK-40-14Aranya Kanda 40.14

त्वं तु धर्ममविज्ञाय केवलं मोहमास्थितः। अभ्यागतं मां दौरात्म्यात्परुषं वक्तुमिच्छसि।।3.40.14।।

tvṃ tu dharmamavijñāya kevalṃ mohamāsthitḥ| abhyāgatṃ māṃ daurātmyātparuṣṃ vaktumicchasi||3.40.14||

Translation

त्वं तु you on your part, धर्मम् rightful duty, अविज्ञाय not knowing, केवलम् only, मोहम् because of delusion, आस्थितः have taken recourse to, अभ्यागतम् to a guest (who comes without prior announcement), माम् me, दौरात्म्यात् out of evil mind, परुषम् harsh, वक्तुम् to speak, इच्छसि want.

Meaning

You do not know your rightful duty.Because of delusion and an evil mind, you want to speak only harsh words to me, a guest who has come to you.

AK-40-15Aranya Kanda 40.15

गुणदोषौ न पृच्छामि क्षमं चात्मनि राक्षस। मयोक्तं तव चैतावत्संप्रत्यमितविक्रमः।।3.40.15।।

guṇadoṣau na pṛcchāmi kṣamṃ cātmani rākṣasa| mayoktṃ tava caitāvatsṃpratyamitavikramḥ||3.40.15||

Translation

राक्षस O demon, गुणदोषौ good or bad, आत्मनि yourself, क्षमम् welfare, न पृच्छामि not asked you, अमितविक्रमः extremely valiant one, सम्प्रति now, तव your, एतावत् as such, मया by me, उक्तम् asked.

Meaning

O demon O extremely valiant demon I ask you(to do) this much now. I am not asking you whether it is good or bad or whether it is for my welfare or not.

AK-40-16Aranya Kanda 40.16

अस्मिंस्तु त्वं महाकृत्ये साहाय्यं कर्तुमर्हसि। शृणु तत्कर्म साहाय्ये यत्कार्यं वचनान्मम।।3.40.16।।

asmiṃstu tvṃ mahākṛtye sāhāyyṃ kartumarhasi| śṛṇu tatkarma sāhāyye yatkāryṃ vacanānmama||3.40.16||

Translation

अस्मिन् in this, महाकृत्ये great task, त्वम् you, साहाय्यम् help, कर्तुम् to do, अर्हसि behove, मम वचनात् by my words, साहाय्ये render help, यत् that which, कार्यम् task, तत् that, कर्म action, शृणु listen.

Meaning

You have to help me in accomplishing this great task .Hear me on the kind of work you have to do.

AK-40-17Aranya Kanda 40.17

सौवर्णस्त्वं मृगो भूत्वा चित्रो रजतबिन्दुभिः । आश्रमे तस्य रामस्य सीतायाः प्रमुखे चर ।।3.40.17 ।।

sauvarṇastvṃ mṛgo bhūtvā citro rajatabindubhiḥ | āśrame tasya rāmasya sītāyāḥ pramukhe cara ||3.40.17 ||

सौवर्णस्त्वं मृगो भूत्वा चित्रो रजतबिन्दुभिः। आश्रमे तस्य रामस्य सीतायाः प्रमुखे चर। प्रलोभयित्वा वैदेहीं यथेष्टं गन्तुमर्हसि।।3.40.18।।

sauvarṇastvṃ mṛgo bhūtvā citro rajatabindubhiḥ| āśrame tasya rāmasya sītāyāḥ pramukhe cara| pralobhayitvā vaidehīṃ yatheṣṭṃ gantumarhasi||3.40.18||

Translation

त्वम् you, रजतबिन्दुभिः with silver spots, चित्रः wonderful, सौवर्णः golden, मृगः deer, भूत्वा being, तस्य his, रामस्य Rama's, आश्रमे in hermitage, सीतायाः Sita's, प्रमुखे in front, चर go about, वैदेहीम् Sita, प्रलोभयित्वा after fascinating her, यथेष्टम् as you desire, गन्तुम् to go, अर्हसि you may.

Meaning

Transform yourself into a wonderful golden deer with silver spots and move about in front of Sita at the hermitage of Rama. After fascinating her, you may go whereever you desire.

AK-40-19Aranya Kanda 40.19

त्वां तु मायामृगं दृष्ट्वा काञ्चनं जातविस्मया। आनयैनमिति क्षिप्रं रामं वक्ष्यति मैथिली।।3.40.19।।

tvāṃ tu māyāmṛgṃ dṛṣṭvā kāñcanṃ jātavismayā| ānayainamiti kṣiprṃ rāmṃ vakṣyati maithilī||3.40.19||

Translation

मैथिली Sita, काञ्चनम् golden, मायामृगम् illusory deer, त्वाम् you, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, जातविस्मया wonderstruck, एनं this deer, क्षिप्रम् quickly, आनय get me, इति thus, रामम् Rama, वक्ष्यति will say.

Meaning

Seeing the illusory golden deer, Sita, wonderstruck, will at once ask Rama to get the deer.

AK-40-20Aranya Kanda 40.20

अपक्रान्ते तु काकुत्स्थे दूरं यात्वाप्युदाहर। हा सीते लक्ष्मणेत्येवं रामवाक्यानुरूपकम्।।3.40.20।।

apakrānte tu kākutsthe dūrṃ yātvāpyudāhara| hā sīte lakṣmaṇetyevṃ rāmavākyānurūpakam||3.40.20||

Translation

काकुत्स्थे the scion of the Kakutsthas, अपक्रान्ते diverted, दूरम् to a distance, यात्वा going, रामवाक्यानुरूपकम् resembling Rama's voice, हा Alas, सीते Sita, हा लक्ष्मण Alas, Lakshmana, इत्येवम् in this way, उदाहर अपि cry also.

Meaning

Divert Rama to a faroff place and cry, 'Alas, Sita, Alas, Lakshmana', imitating the voice of Rama.

AK-40-21Aranya Kanda 40.21

तच्छ्रुत्वा रामपदवीं सीतया च प्रचोदितः। अनुगच्छति सम्भ्रान्तः सौमित्रिरपि सौहृदात्।।3.40.21।।

tacchrutvā rāmapadavīṃ sītayā ca pracoditḥ| anugacchati sambhrāntḥ saumitrirapi sauhṛdāt||3.40.21||

Translation

सौमित्रिरपि Lakshmana too, तत् that, श्रुत्वा on hearing, सीतया च by Sita, प्रचोदितः urged, सम्भ्रान्तः bewildered, सौहृदात् out of love , रामपदवीम् following the track of Rama, अनुगच्छति will go.

Meaning

On hearing you, Lakshmana will be bewildered. Urged by Sita and out of love for Rama, Lakshmana will follow the same track as Rama.

AK-40-22Aranya Kanda 40.22

अपक्रान्ते च काकुत्स्थे लक्ष्मणे च यथासुखम्। आनयिष्यामि वैदेहीं सहस्राक्षश्शचीमिव।।3.40.22।।

apakrānte ca kākutsthe lakṣmaṇe ca yathāsukham| ānayiṣyāmi vaidehīṃ sahasrākṣaśśacīmiva||3.40.22||

Translation

काकुत्स्थे when Rama, लक्ष्मणे च and Lakshmana, अपक्रान्ते are away, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, सहस्राक्षः thousandeyed Indra, शचीमिव like Sachi, यथासुखम् comfortably, आनयिष्यामि will get Sita.

Meaning

When Rama and Lakshmana are away I will comfortably abduct Vaidehi like the thousandeyed Indra brought Sachi.

AK-40-23Aranya Kanda 40.23

एवं कृत्वा त्विदं कार्यं यथेष्टं गच्छ राक्षस। राज्यस्यार्धं प्रयच्छामि मारीच तव सुव्रत।।3.40.23।।

evṃ kṛtvā tvidṃ kāryṃ yatheṣṭṃ gaccha rākṣasa| rājyasyārdhṃ prayacchāmi mārīca tava suvrata||3.40.23||

Translation

राक्षस O demon, इदम् this, कार्यम् work, एवम् in that way, कृत्वा having done, यथेष्टम् wherever you please, गच्छ go, सुव्रत a person of good determination, मारीच Maricha, तव to you, राज्यस्य of my kingdom, अर्धम् half, प्रयच्छामि I will offer.

Meaning

You may go wherever you want after accomplishing this task. I will give you, O demon of determination half my kingdom.

AK-40-24Aranya Kanda 40.24

गच्छ सौम्य शिवं मार्गं कार्यस्यास्य विवृद्धये। अहं त्वानुगमिष्यामि सरथो दण्डकावनम्।।3.40.24।।

gaccha saumya śivṃ mārgṃ kāryasyāsya vivṛddhaye| ahṃ tvānugamiṣyāmi saratho daṇḍakāvanam||3.40.24||

Translation

सौम्य O handsome, अस्य of this, कार्यस्य of this task, विवृद्धये for fulfilment, शिवम् auspicious, मार्गम् path, गच्छ go, अहम् I, सरथः riding on the chariot, दण्डकावनम् to Dandaka forest, अनुगमिष्यामि I will follow.

Meaning

Go and accomplish this task. Let your path be auspicious. I will follow you on the chariot into the Dandaka forest.

AK-40-25Aranya Kanda 40.25

प्राप्य सीतामयुद्धेन वञ्चयित्वा तु राघवम्। लङ्कां प्रतिगमिष्यामि कृतकार्यस्सह त्वया।।3.40.25।।

prāpya sītāmayuddhena vañcayitvā tu rāghavam| laṅkāṃ pratigamiṣyāmi kṛtakāryassaha tvayā||3.40.25||

Translation

राघवम् Rama, वञ्चयित्वा deceiving, सीताम् Sita, अयुद्धेन without a war, प्राप्य obtain, कृतकार्यः having accomplished the task, त्वया सह along with you, लङ्कां प्रति towards Lanka, गमिष्यामि will go.

Meaning

I will deceive Rama and obtain Sita, without waging a war. With the work done, I will return to Lanka along with you.

AK-40-26Aranya Kanda 40.26

न चेत्करोषि मारीच हन्मि त्वामहमद्य वै। एतत्कार्यमवश्यं मे बलादपि करिष्यसि। राज्ञो हि प्रतिकूलस्थो न जातु सुखमेधते।।3.40.26।।

na cetkaroṣi mārīca hanmi tvāmahamadya vai| etatkāryamavaśyṃ me balādapi kariṣyasi| rājño hi pratikūlastho na jātu sukhamedhate||3.40.26||

Translation

मारीच Maricha, न करोषि चेत् if you do not do this, अहम् I, अद्य वै now itself, हन्मि I will kill, मे myself, एतत् this, कार्यम् task, बलादपि forcibly also , अवश्यम् certainly, करिष्यसि will make you do, राज्ञः to the king, प्रतिकूलस्थः against, जातु generally, सुखम् in comfort, न एधते हि will not live.

Meaning

O Maricha if you do not do this, I will kill you now. Or, by force make you do this work. No one who goes against the king lives in comfort.

AK-40-27Aranya Kanda 40.27

आसाद्य तं जीवितसंशयस्ते मृत्युर्ध्रुवो ह्यद्य मया विरुध्य। एतद्यथावत्प्रतिगृह्य बुद्ध्या यदत्र पथ्यं कुरु तत्तथा त्वम्।।3.40.27।।

āsādya tṃ jīvitasṃśayaste mṛtyurdhruvo hyadya mayā virudhya| etadyathāvatpratigṛhya buddhyā yadatra pathyṃ kuru tattathā tvam||3.40.27||

Translation

तम् to him, आसाद्य facing in a combat, ते to you, जीवितसंशयः doubtful to be alive, मया with me, विरुध्य picking up, अद्य now, मृत्युः death, ध्रुवः sure, एतत् as such, बुद्ध्या think, यथावत् do as you like, प्रतिगृह्य accept, अत्र here, यत् whatever, पथ्यम् desirable, तत् that, त्वम् you, तथा like that, कुरु do.

Meaning

Your survival is doubtful after facing Rama in combat. But your death is certain if you oppose me now. Think carefuly and do whatever is desirable for you in the present circumstances. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे चत्वारिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fortieth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
