आर्तानांराक्षसीनांतुलङ्कायांवैकुलेकुले । रावणःकरुणंशब्दंशुश्रावपरिदेवितम् ।।6.96.1।।

ārtānāṃrākṣasīnāṃtulaṅkāyāṃvaikulekule | rāvaṇḥkaruṇṃśabdṃśuśrāvaparidevitam ||6.96.1||

Translation

रावणः Ravana, लङ्कायाम् in Lanka, कुलेकुले house after house, आर्तानाम् piteous cry, राक्षसीनाम् of Rakshasas, करुणम् pathetic, शब्दम् sound, परिदेवितम् of the afflicted, शुश्राव heard

Meaning

Ravana heard from every house in Lanka sounds of piteous cries and pathetic sounds of the afflicted.

YK-96-2Yuddha Kanda 96.2

स तुदीर्घंविनिःश्वस्यमुहूर्तंध्यानमास्थितः । बभूवपरमक्रुद्धोरावणोभीमदर्शनः ।।6.96.2।।

sa tudīrghṃviniḥśvasyamuhūrtṃdhyānamāsthitḥ | babhūvaparamakruddhorāvaṇobhīmadarśanḥ ||6.96.2||

Translation

सःरावणः that Ravana, दीर्घम् long, विनिःश्वस्य remaining silent, मुहूर्तम् for a moment, ध्यानम् in thought, आस्थितः assuming, परमक्रुद्धः angry, भीमदर्शनः of terrific form, बभूव appeared

Meaning

Ravana remained silent for long, thought for a moment and assumed a terrific angry form.

YK-96-3Yuddha Kanda 96.3

सन्दश्यदशनैरोष्ठंक्रोधसम्रक्तलोचनः । राक्षसैरपिदुर्दर्शःकालाग्निरिवमूर्छितः ।।6.96.3।।

sandaśyadaśanairoṣṭhṃkrodhasamraktalocanḥ | rākṣasairapidurdarśḥkālāgnirivamūrchitḥ ||6.96.3||

Translation

दशनैःten, ओष्ठम् teeth, सन्दश्य eyes, क्रोधसम्रक्तलोचनः eyes turned red in wrath, मूर्छितः perplexed कालाग्निरिव like death form, राक्षसैरपि even for the Rakshasas, दुर्दर्शः difficult to look

Meaning

Biting his teeth, eyes turned red in wrath, Ravana was perplexed. He was difficult to look at even for the Rakshasas.

YK-96-4-5Yuddha Kanda 96.4–5 (युग्मम्)

उवाच च समीपस्थान्राक्षसान्राक्षसेश्वरः । क्रोधाव्यक्तकथस्तत्रनिर्दहन्निवचक्षुषा ।।6.96.4।। महोदरंमहापार्श्वंविरूपाक्षं च राक्षसम् । शीघ्रंवदतसैन्यानिनिर्यातेतिममाज्ञया ।।6.96.5।।

uvāca ca samīpasthānrākṣasānrākṣaseśvarḥ | krodhāvyaktakathastatranirdahannivacakṣuṣā ||6.96.4|| mahodarṃmahāpārśvṃvirūpākṣṃ ca rākṣasam | śīghrṃvadatasainyāniniryātetimamājñayā ||6.96.5||

Translation

क्रोधाव्यक्तरथः indistinct in anger, राक्षसेश्वरः Lord of Rakshasas, चक्षुषा eyes, निर्धहन्निव as if burning them, तत्र there, समीपस्थान् nearby, महोदरम् Mahodara, महापार्श्वम् Mahaparsva, राक्षसम् Rakshasas, विरूपाक्षम् Virupaksha, समीपस्थान् close by, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, उवाच spoke, मम me, आज्ञया order, शीघ्रम् quickly, निर्यातइति thus commanded, सैन्यानि the army, वदत spoke

Meaning

Thus spoke the Lord of Rakshasas indistinctly in anger with his eyes burning as though it would consume them (Rakshasas). He commanded Mahodara, Mahaparsva and Virupaksha who stood nearby saying" quickly instruct the army to go."

तस्यतद्वचनंश्रुत्वाराक्षसास्तेभयार्दिताः । चोदयामासुरव्यग्रान्राक्षसांस्तान्नृपाज्ञया ।।6.96.6।।

tasyatadvacanṃśrutvārākṣasāstebhayārditāḥ | codayāmāsuravyagrānrākṣasāṃstānnṛpājñayā ||6.96.6||

Translation

तेराक्षसाः those Rakshasas, तस्य their, तत् those, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, भयार्दिताः stricken with fear, अव्यग्रान् unagitated, तान् they, राक्षसान् Rakshasa's, नृपाज्ञया king's order, चोदयामासुः started thinking

Meaning

On hearing the words of the king's order, the Rakshasas stricken with fear, unagitated, started thinking.

YK-96-7Yuddha Kanda 96.7

तेतुसर्वेतथेत्युक्त्वाराक्षसाभीमदर्शनाः । कृतस्वस्त्वयनाःसर्वेतेरणाभिमुखाययुः ।।6.96.7।।

tetusarvetathetyuktvārākṣasābhīmadarśanāḥ | kṛtasvastvayanāḥsarveteraṇābhimukhāyayuḥ ||6.96.7||

Translation

सर्वे all, ते of them, भीमदर्शनाः with frightful looks, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, तथेति Be it so, उक्त्वा saying, कृतस्वस्त्वनाः having prepared themselves with armor, ते they, सर्वे all, रणाभिमुखाः towards the battlefield, ययुःwent

All the Rakshasas with frightful looks saying 'Be it so', having prepared themselves with armor went towards the battlefield.

प्रतिपूज्ययथान्यायंरावणंतेमहारथाः । तस्थुःप्राञ्जलयःसर्वेभर्तुर्विजयकाङ्क्षिणः ।।6.96.8।।

pratipūjyayathānyāyṃrāvaṇṃtemahārathāḥ | tasthuḥprāñjalayḥsarvebharturvijayakāṅkṣiṇḥ ||6.96.8||

Translation

महारथाः great chariot warriors, सर्वे all, ते they, यथान्यायम्, रावणम् Ravana, प्रतिपूज्यpraying in return, प्राञ्जलयः with folded palms, भर्तुः Lord, विजयकाङ्क्षिणःdesiring success, तस्थुःstood

Meaning

All the great chariot warrior spraying to Ravana with folded palms stood desiring success.

अथोवाचप्रहस्यैतान्रावणःक्रोधमूर्छितः । महोदरमहापार्श्वौविरूपाक्षं च राक्षसम् ।।6.96.9।।

Translation

अथ and then, रावणः Ravana, क्रोथमूर्छितः deluded with anger, प्रहस्य laughing aloud, एतान् these, महोदरमहापार्श्वौMahodara, Mahaparsva, राक्षसम् Rakshasas, विरूपाक्षं च and Virupaksha, उवाच spoke

Meaning

Then Ravana who was deluded with anger, laughing aloud spoke to Mahodara, Mahaparsva and Virupaksha.

अद्यबाणैर्धनुर्मुक्स्सैर्युगान्तादित्यसन्निभैः । राघवंलक्ष्मणंचैवनेष्यामियमसादनम् ।।6.96.10।।

adyabāṇairdhanurmukssairyugāntādityasannibhaiḥ | rāghavṃlakṣmaṇṃcaivaneṣyāmiyamasādanam ||6.96.10||

Translation

अद्य today, धनुर्मुक्तै loosened from the bow:, युगान्तादित्यसन्निभैःresembling sun at the time of dissolution of the universe, बाणैः shafts, राघवम् Raghava, लक्ष्मणंचैव and Lakshmana, यमसादनम् the abode of Yama the god of death, नेष्यामिdispatch

Meaning

Loosening the shafts from the bow, Ravana resembling the Sun at the time of dissolution of the universe said," I shall dispatch Raghava and Lakshmana to the abode of the Lord of death."

खरस्यकुम्भकर्णस्यप्रहसेन्द्रजितोस्तथा । करिष्यामिप्रतीकारमद्यशत्रुवधादहम् ।।6.96.11।।

kharasyakumbhakarṇasyaprahasendrajitostathā | kariṣyāmipratīkāramadyaśatruvadhādaham ||6.96.11||

Translation

अद्य today, शत्रुवधात् by the killing of enemy, अहम् I, खरस्य Khara's, कुम्बकर्णस्य Kumbhakarn's, तथा so also, प्रहस्तेन्द्रजितोः Prahastha, Indrajith, प्रतीकारम् revenge, करिष्यामि will take

Meaning

"Today by the killing the enemy I will take my revenge and also of Khara, Kumbhakarna, Prahastha and Indrajith."

नैवान्तरिक्षं न दिशो न नद्यौर्नापिसागराः । प्रकाशत्वंगमिष्यन्तिमद्बाणजलदावृताः ।।6.96.12।।

naivāntarikṣṃ na diśo na nadyaurnāpisāgarāḥ | prakāśatvṃgamiṣyantimadbāṇajaladāvṛtāḥ ||6.96.12||

Translation

मद्बाणजलदावृताः my arrows like the clouds cover, अन्तरिक्षम् the sky, प्रकाशत्वम् the effulgence, न not, दिशः directions, न not, द्यौः both, न not, सागराःअपि even the ocean, न गमिष्यन्ति not move

Meaning

"By my arrows covering the sky like clouds there will be no effulgence both in space and in the quarters and not even in the ocean."

अद्यवानरमुख्यानांतानियूथानिभागशः । धनुषाशरजालेनवधिष्यामिपतत्रिणा ।।6.96.13।।

adyavānaramukhyānāṃtāniyūthānibhāgaśḥ | dhanuṣāśarajālenavadhiṣyāmipatatriṇā ||6.96.13||

Translation

अद्य today, धनुषा from my bow, पतत्रतिणा plumed arrows, शरजालेन network of arrows, वानरमुख्यानाम् Vanara leaders, यूथानि troops, भागशः part by part, वधिष्यामि will kill

Meaning

"Today by the network of plumed arrows released from my bow I shall kill the troops of Vanara leaders' part by part."

YK-96-14Yuddha Kanda 96.14

अद्यवानरसैन्यानिरथेनपवनौजसा । धनुस्समुद्रादुद्भूतैर्मथिष्यामिशरोर्मिभिः ।।6.96.14।।

adyavānarasainyānirathenapavanaujasā | dhanussamudrādudbhūtairmathiṣyāmiśarormibhiḥ ||6.96.14||

Translation

पवनौजसा as the wind, रथेन on the chariot, धनुःसमुद्रात् ocean of bow, उद्भूतैःwaves risen, शरोर्मिभिः in the shape of arrows, वानरसैन्यानि Vanara army, मथिष्यामि knock

Meaning

"Seated on the chariot I shall knock out the Vanara army by the waves in the form of arrows released from the ocean of my bow."

YK-96-15Yuddha Kanda 96.15

व्याकोशपद्मवक्त्राणिपद्मकेसरवर्चसाम् । अद्ययूथतटाकानिगजवत्प्रमथाम्यहम् ।।6.96.15।।

vyākośapadmavaktrāṇipadmakesaravarcasām | adyayūthataṭākānigajavatpramathāmyaham ||6.96.15||

Translation

अद्य now, व्याकोशपद्मवक्त्राणि their faces resembling open lotuses, पद्मकेसरवर्चसाम् filaments of lotuses, यूथतटाकानि ponds in the form of battalions, अहम् I, गजवत् elephant like, प्रमथामि tormenting

Meaning

"Like an elephant now I shall torment the ponds in the form of battalions of Vanaras shining like the filaments of lotuses, with their faces resembling open lotuses."

YK-96-16Yuddha Kanda 96.16

सशरैरद्यवदनैस्सङ्ख्येवानरयूथपाः । मण्डयिष्यन्तिवसुधांसनालैरिवपङ्कजैः ।।6.96.16।।

saśarairadyavadanaissaṅkhyevānarayūthapāḥ | maṇḍayiṣyantivasudhāṃsanālairivapaṅkajaiḥ ||6.96.16||

Translation

अद्य now, सङ्ख्ये, वानरयूथपाः Vanara battalions, सशरैः the arrows, वदनैः faces, सनालैः fixed, पङ्कजैरिव like lotuses, वसुधाम् on earth, मण्डयिष्यन्ति will adorn

Meaning

"Now with the arrows fixed on their faces the Vanara battalions spread on the earth will adorn the earth like lotuses spread on earth."

YK-96-17Yuddha Kanda 96.17

अद्ययूथप्रचण्डानांहरीणांद्रुमयोधिनाम् । मुक्तेनैकेषुणायुद्धेभेत्स्यामि च शतंशतम् ।।6.96.17।।

adyayūthapracaṇḍānāṃharīṇāṃdrumayodhinām | muktenaikeṣuṇāyuddhebhetsyāmi ca śatṃśatam ||6.96.17||

Translation

अद्य today, युद्धे in combat, मुक्तेन released, एकेषुणा each one, यूथप्रचण्डानाम् troops vehemently, द्रुमयोधिनाम् fighting with trees, हरीणाम् monkeys, शतंशतम् one hundred each, भेत्स्यामि pierce through them

Meaning

"Today in the combat each one of the arrows released by me will pierce through one hundred monkeys vehemently fighting with trees"

YK-96-18Yuddha Kanda 96.18

हतोभर्ताहतोभ्रातायासां च चतनयोहतः । वधेनाद्यरिपोस्तासांकरोम्यश्रुप्रमार्जनम् ।।6.96.18।।

hatobhartāhatobhrātāyāsāṃ ca catanayohatḥ | vadhenādyaripostāsāṃkaromyaśrupramārjanam ||6.96.18||

Translation

अद्य today, रिपोः enemy, वधेन by destruction, तासां his, भ्राता brother, हतःkilled, यासाम् whose, तनयः brother, हतः killed, तासाम् whose, अश्रुप्रमार्जनम् wipe the tears, करोमि will do

Meaning

"Today through the destruction of the enemy I will wipe the tears of the one whose son has been killed, whose brother has been killed."

YK-96-19Yuddha Kanda 96.19

अद्यमद्भाणनिर्भिन्नैःप्रकीर्णैर्गतचेतनैः । करोमिवानरैर्युद्धेयत्नावेक्ष्यतलांमहीम् ।।6.96.19।।

adyamadbhāṇanirbhinnaiḥprakīrṇairgatacetanaiḥ | karomivānarairyuddheyatnāvekṣyatalāṃmahīm ||6.96.19||

Translation

अद्य today, युद्धे in combat, मद्बाणनिर्भिन्नैः by my arrows split open, गतचेतनैः ceased of life, प्रस्तीर्णैः spread out, वानरैः Vanaras, महीम् earth, यत्नावेक्ष्यतलाम् only with effort to see, करोमि make

Meaning

"Today, in the combat, my arrows will split open the Vanaras and ceased of life, they will be covering the earth. It will be possible to see the ground only with effort."

YK-96-20Yuddha Kanda 96.20

अद्यगोमयवोगृध्राश्चये च मांसाशिनोऽपरे । सर्वांस्तांस्तर्पयिष्यामिशत्रुमांसैश्शरार्दितैः ।।6.96.20।।

adyagomayavogṛdhrāścaye ca māṃsāśino'pare | sarvāṃstāṃstarpayiṣyāmiśatrumāṃsaiśśarārditaiḥ ||6.96.20||

अद्य today, गोमायव: whatever animalsगृध्राश्च eagles, मांसाशिनः flesh eating animals, ये those, अपरे enemy, तान् them, सर्वान् all, शरार्दितैः killed by my arrows, शत्रुमांसैः enemy's flesh, तर्पयिष्यामि will provide

Meaning

"Today I shall provide for whatever animals, eagles or flesheating animals the flesh of enemies killed by my arrows."

YK-96-21Yuddha Kanda 96.21

कल्प्यतांमेरथंशीघ्रंक्षिप्रमानीयतांधनुः । अनुप्रयान्तुमांयुद्धेयेऽत्रशिष्टानिशाचराः ।।6.96.21।।

kalpyatāṃmerathṃśīghrṃkṣipramānīyatāṃdhanuḥ | anuprayāntumāṃyuddheye'traśiṣṭāniśācarāḥ ||6.96.21||

Translation

मे I, रथः chariot, शीघ्रम् quickly, कल्प्यताम् be ready, धनुः bow, क्षिप्रम् instantly, अनीयताम् brought, अत्र here, शिष्टाः survived, ये those, निशाचराः night rangers, युद्धे in combat, माम् me, अनुप्रयान्तु follow

Meaning

"Let my chariot and bow be ready and brought here. Let the night rangers who survived follow me."

YK-96-22Yuddha Kanda 96.22

तस्यतद्वचनंश्रुत्वामहापार्श्वोऽब्रवीद्वचः । बलाध्यक्षान् स्थिथांस्तत्रबलंसंत्वर्यतामिति ।।6.96.22।।

tasyatadvacanṃśrutvāmahāpārśvo'bravīdvacḥ | balādhyakṣān sthithāṃstatrabalṃsṃtvaryatāmiti ||6.96.22||

तस्य his, तत् वचनम् the speech of Ravana, श्रुत्वा hearing, महापार्श्वःMahaparsva, तत्र there, स्थितान् standing, बलाध्यक्षान् mighty leaders, बलम् of army, संत्वर्यताम् enjoined, वचः words, अब्रवीत् spoke

Meaning

On hearing the speech of Ravana, Mahaparsva enjoined the mighty leaders of the army standing there and spoke as follows.

बलाध्यक्षास्तुसम्रब्दाराक्षसांस्तान् गृहेगृहे । चोदयन्तःपरिययुर्लङ्कांलघुपराक्रमाः ।।6.96.23।।

balādhyakṣāstusamrabdārākṣasāṃstān gṛhegṛhe | codayantḥpariyayurlaṅkāṃlaghuparākramāḥ ||6.96.23||

Translation

लघुपराक्रमाः mighty valour, बलाध्यक्षान्तु army chief, सम्रब्दाः hurriedly, गृहेगृहे house to house, तान् they, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, चोदयन्तः searched, लङ्काम् in Lanka, परिययुः went

Meaning

"Let the army leaders of mighty valour go hurriedly to search in every house in Lanka for Rakshasas."

YK-96-24-26Yuddha Kanda 96.24–26 (त्रिकम्)

ततोमुहूर्तान्निष्पेतूराक्षसाभीमदर्शनाः । नदन्तोभीमवदनानानाप्रहरणैर्भुजैः ।।6.96.24।। असिभिःपट्टसै: शूलैर्गदाभिर्मुसलैर्हलैः । शक्तिभिस्तीक्ष्णधाराभिर्महद्भि: कूटमुद्गरैः ।।6.96.25।। यष्टिभिर्विमलैश्चक्रैर्निशितैश्चपरश्वथै: । भिन्दिपालैःशतघ्नीभिरन्यैश्चापिवरायुधैः ।।6.96.26।।

tatomuhūrtānniṣpetūrākṣasābhīmadarśanāḥ | nadantobhīmavadanānānāpraharaṇairbhujaiḥ ||6.96.24|| asibhiḥpaṭṭasai: śūlairgadābhirmusalairhalaiḥ | śaktibhistīkṣṇadhārābhirmahadbhi: kūṭamudgaraiḥ ||6.96.25|| yaṣṭibhirvimalaiścakrairniśitaiścaparaśvathai: | bhindipālaiḥśataghnībhiranyaiścāpivarāyudhaiḥ ||6.96.26||

ततः then, भीमदर्शनाः of terrific looks, भीमवदनाः of frightening face, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, नदन्तः roaring noise, असिभिःswords, पट्टसै: spears, शूलैः tridents, गदाभिः maces, मुसलैः iron bars, हलैः halas, तीक्षधाराभिः sharp and pointed, शक्तिभिः javelins, महभदिः huge, कूटमुद्गरैः Kutamudgaras, यष्टिभिः staffs, विविधैः several, चक्रैःdiscuss, निशितैः sharp, परश्वधैःaxes, बिन्दिपालैः Bhindipalas, शतघ्भीभिः Sataghnis, अन्यैः other, वरायुधैः excellent weapons, नानाप्रहरणैः several weapons, भुजैः carrying on shoulders, मुहूर्तात् in a short time, निष्पेतुः departed

Meaning

Then the Rakshasas of terrific looks, and frightening faces holding on shoulders roaring departed with swords, spears, tridents, maces, iron bars, halas, sharp pointed javelins, huge Kutamudgaras, staffs and several discusses, sharp Bhindipalas, Sataghnis and many kinds of excellent weapons.

अथानयद्बलाध्यक्षस्सत्वरोरावणाज्ञया । द्रुतंसूतसमायुक्तंयुक्ताष्टतुरगंरथम् । आरुरोहतदाभीमोदीप्यमानंस्वतेजसा ।।6.96.27।।

athānayadbalādhyakṣassatvarorāvaṇājñayā | drutṃsūtasamāyuktṃyuktāṣṭaturagṃratham | ārurohatadābhīmodīpyamānṃsvatejasā ||6.96.27||

Translation

अथ and then, बलाध्यक्षः chief of army, रावणाज्ञया by Ravana's order, सत्वरः quickly, द्रुतम् controlled, सूतसमायुक्तम् with chariot riders, युक्ताष्टतुरगम् yoked to eight horses, रथम् chariots, अथानयन by the order, तदा then, भीमः dreadful, स्वतेजसा selfeffulgent, दीप्यमानम् glowing, आरुरोह ascended

Meaning

Then by Ravana's command. the chief of the army with chariot rider brought the chariot yoked to eight horses quickly. Then dreadful and selfeffulgent glowing Ravana ascended the chariot."

ततःप्रयातस्सहसाराक्षसैर्भहुभिर्वृतः ।।6.96.28।। रावणःसत्त्वगाम्भीर्याद्दारयन्निवमेदिनीम् ।

tatḥprayātassahasārākṣasairbhahubhirvṛtḥ ||6.96.28|| rāvaṇḥsattvagāmbhīryāddārayannivamedinīm |

Translation

ततः then, रावणः Ravana, बहुभिः many, राक्षसैः Rakshasas, वृतः surrounded by, सत्त्वगाम्भीर्यात् majestic might, मेदिनीम् ground, दारयन्निव rending the earth, सहसाswiftly, प्रयातःset out

Meaning

Then Ravana surrounded by many Rakshasas set out swiftly rending the earth with all his might and majesty.

रावणेनाभ्यनुज्ञातौमहापार्श्वमहोदरौ । विरूपाक्षश्चदुर्धर्षोरथानारुरुहुस्तदा ।।6.96.29।।

rāvaṇenābhyanujñātaumahāpārśvamahodarau | virūpākṣaścadurdharṣorathānāruruhustadā ||6.96.29||

Translation

रावणेन by Ravana, अभ्यनुज्ञातौ duly permitted, महापार्श्वमहोदरौ Mahaparsva, Mahodara, दुर्धर्षः difficult to over power, विरूपाक्षश्च Virupaksha also, तदा then, रथान् chariots, आरुरुहुः ascended

Meaning

Duly permitted by Ravana, Mahaparsva and Mahodara who are difficult to overpower and also Virupaksha ascended their chariots.

तेतुहृष्टाविवर्धन्तोभिन्दन्तइवमेदिनीम् । नादंघोरंविमुञ्चन्तोनिर्ययुर्जयकाङ्क्षिणः ।।6.96.30।।

tetuhṛṣṭāvivardhantobhindantaivamedinīm | nādṃghorṃvimuñcantoniryayurjayakāṅkṣiṇḥ ||6.96.30||

Translation

ते they, हृष्टाः happy, विवर्थन्तः turning round, मेदिनीम् earth, भिन्दन्तःइव as if breaking, घोरम् terrific, नादम् roaring, विमुञ्चन्तः emerged, जयकाङ्क्षिणःdesiring victory, निर्ययुःsallied forth

ततः then, तेजस्वी glowing, रक्षोगणबलैः army of Rakshasas, कालान्तकयमोपमः like the time spirit Yama, उद्यतधनुः lifted bow, युद्धाय for battle, निर्ययौ went

Meaning

Then Ravana surrounded by the army of Rakshasas lifted his bow, like the Lord Yama at the time of dissolution of the universe, went for the battle glowing.

YK-96-32Yuddha Kanda 96.32

ततःप्रजविताश्वेनरथेन स महारथः । द्वारेणनिर्ययौतेनयत्रतौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।।6.96.32।।

tatḥprajavitāśvenarathena sa mahārathḥ | dvāreṇaniryayautenayatrataurāmalakṣmaṇau ||6.96.32||

Translation

ततः then, महारथः mighty charioteer, सः he, प्रजविताश्वेन exceedingly swift horses, रथेन in the chariot, तौ those, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, यत्र there, तेन by the, द्वारेण at the entrance, निर्ययौ made his exit

Meaning

Then from the mighty chariot yoked to exceedingly swift horses, the mighty charioteer made his exit from the entrance and saw Rama and Lakshmana there.

YK-96-33Yuddha Kanda 96.33

ततोनष्टप्रभःसूर्योदिशश्चतिमिरावृताः । द्विजाश्चनेदुर्घोराश्चसञ्चचाल च मेदिनी ।।6.96.33।।

tatonaṣṭaprabhḥsūryodiśaścatimirāvṛtāḥ | dvijāścanedurghorāścasañcacāla ca medinī ||6.96.33||

Translation

ततः then, सूर्यः Sun, नष्टप्रभः lost radiance, दिशश्च direction, तिमिरावृताः enveloped by gloom, घोराः frightening, द्विजाश्च birds, नेदुः made fearful sounds, मेदिनी च earth, सञ्चचाल shook

Meaning

Then the Sun lost his radiance, and the four directions were enveloped by gloom, the birds made fearful noise and the earth shook.

ववर्षरुधिरंदेवश्चस्खलुश्चतुरङ्गमाः । ध्वजाग्रेन्यपतद्गृध्रोविनेदुश्चाशिवाःशिवाः ।।6.96.34।।

नयनंचास्फुरद्वामंवामोबाहुरकम्पत । विवर्णवदनश्साकतिंचिदभ्रश्यतस्वनः ।।6.96.35।।

nayanṃcāsphuradvāmṃvāmobāhurakampata | vivarṇavadanaśsākatiṃcidabhraśyatasvanḥ ||6.96.35||

Translation

वामम् left, नयनं च eyes too, अस्फुरत् twitched, वामः left, बाहुः arm, अकम्पत quivered, विवर्णवदनः pale face, आसीत् turned, किञ्चित् indeed, स्वनः tone, अभ्रश्यत turned hoarse

His left eye twitched, left arm quivered, face turned pale and indeed his tone became hoarse.

रावणः Ravana, कालचोदितः impelled by time, घोरान् terrific, समवस्थितान् that which happened, एतान् these, उत्पातान् taken place, अचिन्तयन् not thinking, मोहात् in delusion, वदार्थम् for the destruction, निर्ययौ set forth

Meaning

Impelled by the time spirit, Ravana set forth without thinking of the terrific portents that had appeared in delusion for his destruction.

तेषांतुरथघोषेणराक्षसानांमहात्मनाम् । वानराणामपिचमूर्युद्धायैवाभ्यवर्तत ।।6.96.39।।

teṣāṃturathaghoṣeṇarākṣasānāṃmahātmanām | vānarāṇāmapicamūryuddhāyaivābhyavartata ||6.96.39||

Translation

महात्मनाम् great, तेषांराक्षसानाम् those Rakshasas, रथघोषेण sound of chariots, वानराणाम् Vanaras, चमूःअपि army troops also, युद्धायैव for the sake of battle, अभ्यवर्तत stood facing.

Meaning

The Vanaras stood facing the great sound of Rakshasa troops, on hearing the sounds of chariots for the sake of battle.

YK-96-40Yuddha Kanda 96.40

तेषांतुतुमुलंयुद्धंबभूवकपिरक्षसाम् । अन्योन्यमाह्वयानानांक्रुद्धानांजयमिच्छताम् ।।6.96.40।।

teṣāṃtutumulṃyuddhṃbabhūvakapirakṣasām | anyonyamāhvayānānāṃkruddhānāṃjayamicchatām ||6.96.40||

Translation

अन्योन्यम् one another, आह्वयानानाम् challenged, क्रुद्धानाम् angry, जयम् victory, इच्छताम् desiring, तेषाम् them, कपिरक्षसाम् Vanaras and Rakshasas, तुमुलम् intense, युद्धम् war, बभूव happened

Intense battle took place between the angry Vanaras and Rakshasas challenging one another desiring victory.

ततःक्रुद्धोदशग्रीवश्शरैःकाञ्चनभूषणैः । वानराणामनीकेषुचकारकदनंमहत् ।।6.96.41।।

tatḥkruddhodaśagrīvaśśaraiḥkāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ | vānarāṇāmanīkeṣucakārakadanṃmahat ||6.96.41||

Translation

तः there, क्रुद्धः angered, दशग्रीवः Ten headed, काञ्चनभूषणैः adorned with golden ornaments, शरैः arrows, वानराणाम् at the Vanaras, अनीकेषु using, महत् great, कदनम् war, चकार happened

Meaning

There the tenheaded Ravana using arrows adorned with gold plumes struck Vanaras and a great war took place.

विकृत्तशिरसःकेचिद्रावणेनवलीमुखाः । केचिद्विच्छिन्नहृदयाःकेचिच्छ्रोत्रविवर्जिताः ।।6.96.42।।

vikṛttaśirasḥkecidrāvaṇenavalīmukhāḥ | kecidvicchinnahṛdayāḥkecicchrotravivarjitāḥ ||6.96.42||

Translation

केचित् some, वलीमुखाः Vanaras, रावणेन by Ravana, विकृत्तशिरसः deformed heads, केचित् indeed, विछिन्नहृदयाः pierced hearts, केचित् some, श्रोत्रवर्जिताः ears cut off
