मकराक्षंहतंश्रुत्वारावणस्समितिञ्जयः । रोषेणमहताविष्टोदन्ताङ्कटकटाय्य च ।।6.80.1।। कोपितश्चतदातत्रकिंकार्यमितिचिन्तयन् । आदिदेशाथसङ्क्रुद्धोरणायेजितंसुतम् ।।6.80.2।।

makarākṣṃhatṃśrutvārāvaṇassamitiñjayḥ | roṣeṇamahatāviṣṭodantāṅkaṭakaṭāyya ca ||6.80.1|| kopitaścatadātatrakiṃkāryamiticintayan | ādideśāthasaṅkruddhoraṇāyejitṃsutam ||6.80.2||

Translation

समितिञ्जयःone who is always victorious in war, रावणः Ravana, मकराक्षम् Maka raksha, हतम् killed, श्रुत्वा on hearing, महता highly, रोषेण enraged, आविष्टःengrossed in, दन्तान् teeth, कटकटाय्य च grinding, कुपितश्च in anger, तदा then, तत्र there, किम् what, कार्यम् deed, इति this, चिन्तयन् thinking, अथ and then, सङ्क्रुद्धःangry, सुतम्son, इन्द्रजितम् Indrajith, रणाय to battle, आदिदेश commanded

Meaning

Ravana, who was always victorious in warhearing that Maka raksha had been killed, became highly enraged and grinding his teeth in anger was engrossed in thinking. He commanded his son Indrajith to go to battle.

YK-80-3Yuddha Kanda 80.3

जहिवीर महावीर्यौभ्रातरौरामलक्ष्मणौ । अदृश्योदृश्यमानोवासर्वथात्वंबलाधिकः ।।6.80.3।।

jahivīra mahāvīryaubhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau | adṛśyodṛśyamānovāsarvathātvṃbalādhikḥ ||6.80.3||

Translation

वीर valiant, अदृश्यःinvisible, दृश्यमानोवाor visible, महावीर्यौ great heroes, भ्रातरौ brothers, रामलक्ष्मणौRama and Lakshmana, जहि destroy, सर्वाथा always, त्वम् you, बलाधिकः superior

Meaning

"Oh, Valiant son! You destroy the two heroic brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, by being visible or invisible as you are always superior to them."

YK-80-4Yuddha Kanda 80.4

त्वमप्रतिमकर्माणमिन्द्रंजयसिसंयुगे । किंपुनर्मानुषौदृष्टवा न वधिष्यसिसंयुगे ।।6.80.4।।

tvamapratimakarmāṇamindrṃjayasisṃyuge | kiṃpunarmānuṣaudṛṣṭavā na vadhiṣyasisṃyuge ||6.80.4||

Translation

त्वम् you, संयुगे in battle, अप्रतिमकर्माणम् by incomparable deeds, इन्द्रम् Indra, जयसि won, संयुगे in combat, मानुषौ men, दृष्टवा seeing, किंपुनः why again, न वधिष्यसिnot kill them

Meaning

"You have won the battle with Indra of incomparable deeds. Why not kill men, onseeing them in combat?"

तथोक्तोराक्षसेन्द्रेणप्रतिगृह्यपितुर्वचः । यज्ञभूमौ स विधिवत् पावकंजुहवेन्द्रजित् ।।6.80.5।।

tathoktorākṣasendreṇapratigṛhyapiturvacḥ | yajñabhūmau sa vidhivat pāvakṃjuhavendrajit ||6.80.5||

राक्षसेन्द्रेण Lord of Rakshasas, तथा thus, उक्तःspoken, सःhe, इन्द्रजित्Indrajith, पितुःfather's, वचःwords, प्रतिगृह्य respecting, यज्ञभूमौ place for offering oblations in fire, विधिवत् as per tradition, पावकम् fire sacrifice, जुहव did

Meaning

Hearing the words spoken by the Lord of Rakshasas, Indrajith respecting the command poured oblations in the fireas per tradition before proceeding.

YK-80-6Yuddha Kanda 80.6

जुह्वतश्चापितत्राग्निंरक्तोष्णीषधरास्त्रिरियः । आजग्मुस्तत्रसम्भ्रान्ताराक्षस्योयत्ररावणिः ।।6.80.6।।

juhvataścāpitatrāgniṃraktoṣṇīṣadharāstririyḥ | ājagmustatrasambhrāntārākṣasyoyatrarāvaṇiḥ ||6.80.6||

Translation

तत्र thereafter, अग्निम् fire, जुह्वतः च अपि went to the place of sacrifice, रक्तोष्णीषधराःred coloured head dresses, स्त्रियःwomen, रावणिः Rakshasa women, यत्र to that place, तत्र there, सम्भ्रान्ताः to wear, आजग्मुः brought

Meaning

Thereafter, as he went to the place of fire sacrifice, Rakshasa women brought red coloured head dresses to wear (for the priests).

YK-80-7Yuddha Kanda 80.7

शस्त्राणिशरपत्राणिसमिधोऽथविभीतकाः । लोहितानि च वासांहिस्रुवंकार्ष्णायसंतथा ।।6.80.7।।

śastrāṇiśarapatrāṇisamidho'thavibhītakāḥ | lohitāni ca vāsāṃhisruvṃkārṣṇāyasṃtathā ||6.80.7||

Translation

शरपत्राणि grass, शस्त्राणि weapons, विभीतकाः wooden pieces, समिधः as sticks for offering, अथ and, लोहितानि red coloured, वासांसि clothes, यथा so also, कार्ष्णायसम् iron containers, स्रुवम् as ladles

Meaning

Then, in that fire sacrifice, weapons as grass, wooden pieces as sticks for offering into fire, redcoloured clothes for the priests to wear, and so also iron containers as ladles to offer in fire were used.

YK-80-8Yuddha Kanda 80.8

सर्वतोऽग्निंसमास्तीर्यशरपत्रैस्सतोमरैः । छागस्यसर्वकृष्णस्यगळंजग्राहजीवतः ।।6.80.8।।

sarvato'gniṃsamāstīryaśarapatraissatomaraiḥ | chāgasyasarvakṛṣṇasyagaळṃjagrāhajīvatḥ ||6.80.8||

Translation

अग्निंसर्वतःon all sides of fire sacrifices, सतोमरैः spread with weapons, शरपत्रैः grass, समास्तीर्य for the sake of offering in fire, जीवतः live, सर्वकृष्णस्य entirely dark in colour, छागस्य goat, गळम् neck, जग्राह consigned

Meaning

Weapons were spread on all sides of the fire sacrifice like grass. A darkcoloured live goat's neck was consigned for offering into fire.

YK-80-9Yuddha Kanda 80.9

सकृदेवसमिद्धस्यविधूमस्यमहार्चिषः । बभूवुस्तानिलिङ्गानिविजयंदर्शयन्ति च ।।6.80.9।।

sakṛdevasamiddhasyavidhūmasyamahārciṣḥ | babhūvustāniliṅgānivijayṃdarśayanti ca ||6.80.9||

Translation

सकृत् by that action, होमसमिद्धस्य sacrificial fire, विधूमस्य by the smoke, महार्चिषः mighty flames, विजयम् signs of victory, दर्शयन्ति appeared, तानि in that, लिङ्कानि signs of, बभूवुःaroused

Meaning

By that action of fire sacrifice, the mighty flames and the smoke that appeared from the mighty smokeless fire signifying victory appeared.

YK-80-10Yuddha Kanda 80.10

प्रदक्षिणावर्तशिखस्तप्तहाटकसन्निभः । हविस्तत्प्रतिजग्राहपावकस्स्वयमुत्थितः ।।6.80.10।।

pradakṣiṇāvartaśikhastaptahāṭakasannibhḥ | havistatpratijagrāhapāvakassvayamutthitḥ ||6.80.10||

Translation

प्रदक्षिणावर्तशिखः flames of fire going round, तप्तहाटकसन्निभः like refined gold, पावकः fire, स्वयम् by itself, उत्थितःarose, तत् that, हविः offerings into fire, प्रतिजग्राह received

Meaning

The flames of fire going round the fire by itself which closely resembled refined gold, received the offerings into fire.

YK-80-11Yuddha Kanda 80.11

हुत्वाग्निंतर्पयित्वाथदेवदानवराक्षसान् । आरुरोहरथश्रेष्ठमन्तर्थानगतंशुभम् ।।6.80.11।।

hutvāgniṃtarpayitvāthadevadānavarākṣasān | āruroharathaśreṣṭhamantarthānagatṃśubham ||6.80.11||

Translation

अग्निम् into fire, हुत्वा having offered, अथ and then, देवदानवराक्षसान् Devas, Danavas, and Rakshasas तर्पयित्वा offering, अन्तर्धानगतम् disappeared, शुभम् auspicious, रथश्रेष्ठम् best of chariots, आरुरोह ascended

Meaning

Having offered fire that way, and gratified Devas, Danavas and Rakshasas, he (Indrajith) ascended the best of chariots and disappeared.

YK-80-12Yuddha Kanda 80.12

स वाजिभिश्चतुर्भिस्तुबाणैश्चनिशितैर्युतः । आरोपितमहाचापश्शुशुभेस्यन्दनोत्तमः ।।6.80.12।।

sa vājibhiścaturbhistubāṇaiścaniśitairyutḥ | āropitamahācāpaśśuśubhesyandanottamḥ ||6.80.12||

Translation

चतुर्भिः the four, वाजिभिःhorses, निशितैःsharp, बाणैः arrows, युतःfitted, आरोपितमहाचापः mighty bow, सः he, स्यन्दनोत्तमःshining exquisitely, शुशुभे charming

Meaning

Drawn by horses, fitted with sharp mighty bows, the chariot was shining exquisitely and looked charming.

YK-80-13Yuddha Kanda 80.13

जाज्वल्यमानोवपुषातपनीयपरिच्छदः । मृगैश्चन्द्रार्धचन्द्रैश्च स रथस्समलङ्कृतः ।।6.80.13।।

jājvalyamānovapuṣātapanīyaparicchadḥ | mṛgaiścandrārdhacandraiśca sa rathassamalaṅkṛtḥ ||6.80.13||

Translation

वपुषा incarnated, जाज्वल्यमानःglittering, तपनीयपरिच्छदःcovered with golden, सः that, रथःchariot, मृगैःimages of antelopes, चन्द्रार्धचन्द्रैश्च full moon and crescents as inscriptions, समलङ्कृतःdecorated

Meaning

The chariot was glittering incarnated with gold covered with images offull moon, crescent moon inscriptions and decorated with images of antelopes.

YK-80-14Yuddha Kanda 80.14

जाम्बूनदमहाकम्बुर्दीप्तपावकसन्निभः । बभूवेन्द्रजितःकेतुर्वैदूर्यसमलङ्कृतः ।।6.80.14।।

jāmbūnadamahākamburdīptapāvakasannibhḥ | babhūvendrajitḥketurvaidūryasamalaṅkṛtḥ ||6.80.14||

Translation

जाम्बूनदमहाकम्बुःrings of gold, दीप्तपावकसन्निभः glowing like fire, इन्द्रजितःIndrajith, केतुः standard, वैडूर्यसमलङ्कृतःadorned with gems of Vydurya, बभूव it was

Meaning

Like flaming fire in appearance, the chariot was provided with rings of gold, the standard of the chariot was adorned with gems of Vydurya.

YK-80-15Yuddha Kanda 80.15

तेनचादित्यकल्पेनब्रह्मास्त्रण च पालितः । स बभूवदुराधर्षोरावणिस्सुमहाबलः ।।6.80.15।।

tenacādityakalpenabrahmāstraṇa ca pālitḥ | sa babhūvadurādharṣorāvaṇissumahābalḥ ||6.80.15||

Translation

आदित्यकल्पेन effulgent as the orbit of the sun, तेनब्रह्मार्स्तेण by that weapon of Brahma, पालितःruled, सुमहाबलः of mighty prowess, सःरावणिःRavani son of Ravana, दुराधर्षःdifficult to gain over, बभूवappeared

Meaning

Protected by the weapon of Brahma, effulgent as the orbit of the Sun, the son of Ravana was endowed with mighty prowess and was difficult to gain over.

YK-80-16Yuddha Kanda 80.16

सोऽभिनिर्यायनगरादिन्द्रजित्समितिञ्जयः । हत्वाग्निंराक्षसैर्मन्त्रैरन्तर्धानगतोऽब्रवीत् ।।6.80.16।।

so'bhiniryāyanagarādindrajitsamitiñjayḥ | hatvāgniṃrākṣasairmantrairantardhānagato'bravīt ||6.80.16||

Translation

समितिञ्जयःwho had acquired the power of being victorious in the wars, सःइन्द्रजित् Indrajith, राक्षसैःfor Rakshasas, by Rakshasas मन्त्रै: uttering ritualistic verses, अग्निम् in fire, हुत्वा offering, नगरात् from the city, अभिनिर्याय departed, अन्तर्धानगतःdisappeared, अब्रवीत् bragged as follows

Meaning

Indrajith who had acquired the power of being victorious in the wars departed, after uttering ritualistic verses which are known to Rakshasas only and making an offering into fire disappeared and bragged as follows.

YK-80-17Yuddha Kanda 80.17

अद्यहत्वारणेयौतौमिथ्याप्रव्रजितौवने । जयंपित्रेप्रदास्यामिरावणायरणार्जितम् ।।6.80.17।।

adyahatvāraṇeyautaumithyāpravrajitauvane | jayṃpitrepradāsyāmirāvaṇāyaraṇārjitam ||6.80.17||

Translation

यौ in which, वने forest, मिध्याप्रव्रजितौ who are in exile in vain, तौ those two, रणए in war, अद्य now, हत्वा end, पित्रे father, रावणाय Ravana's, रणार्जितम् earned by waging war, जयम् victory, प्रदास्यामिwill give

Meaning

"Having put an end to war, and the two princes who are in exile in the forest in vain, I will present the victory earned to my father now."

YK-80-18Yuddha Kanda 80.18

अद्यनिर्वानरमुर्वींहत्वारामंसलक्ष्मणम् । करिष्येपरमांप्रीतिमित्युक्त्वान्तरधीयत ।।6.80.18।।

adyanirvānaramurvīṃhatvārāmṃsalakṣmaṇam | kariṣyeparamāṃprītimityuktvāntaradhīyata ||6.80.18||

Translation

अद्य now, उर्वीम् earth, निर्वानरां devoid of monkeys, रामम् Rama, लक्ष्मणं च and Lakshmana, हत्वा killing, परमाम् supreme, प्रीतिम् joy, करिष्ये provide, इति thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, अन्तरधीयत invisible

Meaning

'Making the earth devoid of monkeys, killing Rama and Lakshmana, I will provide supreme joy to my father now', saying so he became invisible.

YK-80-19Yuddha Kanda 80.19

आपपातथसङ्कृद्धोदशग्रीवेणचोदितः । तीक्षणकार्मुकनाराचैस्तीक्षणस्त्विन्द्ररिपूरणे ।।6.80.19।।

āpapātathasaṅkṛddhodaśagrīveṇacoditḥ | tīkṣaṇakārmukanārācaistīkṣaṇastvindraripūraṇe ||6.80.19||

Translation

तीक्षणकार्मुकनाराचैः equipped with sharp bows, रणे in war, तीक्षणः sharp, इन्द्ररिपुः Indra's enemy, दशग्रीवेण tenheaded, चोदितःdirected by, अथ and then, सङ्कृद्धःfuriously, पपात rushed

Meaning

Directed by the ten headed Ravana, enemy of Indra, equipped with sharp bows Indrajith rushed furiously.

YK-80-20Yuddha Kanda 80.20

स ददर्शमहावीर्यौनागौत्रिशिरसानिव । सृजन्ताविषुजालानिवीरौवानरमध्यगौ ।।6.80.20।।

sa dadarśamahāvīryaunāgautriśirasāniva | sṛjantāviṣujālānivīrauvānaramadhyagau ||6.80.20||

Translation

सः he, महावीर्यौ great hero, त्रिशिरसा like three, नागौइव like serpents, इषुजालानि discharging arrows, सृजन्तौ raining, वानरमध्यगौ in the midst of Vanaras, वीरौ heroes, ददर्श saw

Meaning

That great hero saw Rama and Lakshmana like three serpents in the midst of Vanaras raining network of arrows.

YK-80-21Yuddha Kanda 80.21

इमौतावितिसञ्चिन्त्यसज्जंकृत्वा च कार्मुकम् । सन्ततानेषुधाराभिःपर्जन्यइववृष्टिमान् ।।6.80.21।।

imautāvitisañcintyasajjṃkṛtvā ca kārmukam | santatāneṣudhārābhiḥparjanyaivavṛṣṭimān ||6.80.21||

Translation

इमौ these, तौ two, इतिrecognising, सञ्चिन्त्य stringing, कार्मुकम् the bow, सज्जम् fastening, कृत्वा affixing, वृष्टिमान् raining cloud, पर्जन्यःइव like rain, इषुदाराभिः with continuous flow of arrows, सन्ततान covered

Meaning

Recognising the two princes, stringing his bow, and fastening, affixing he showered a continuous flow of arrows like rain from rain clouds and covered them.

YK-80-22Yuddha Kanda 80.22

तुवैहायसंप्राप्यसरथोरामलक्ष्मणौ । आचक्षुर्विषयेतिष्ठवनिव्याधनिशितैश्शरैः ।।6.80.22।।

tuvaihāyasṃprāpyasarathorāmalakṣmaṇau | ācakṣurviṣayetiṣṭhavanivyādhaniśitaiśśaraiḥ ||6.80.22||

Translation

सरथःriding in the aerial car, सःhe, वैहायसम् from the sky, प्राप्य released, आचक्षुर्विषये remaining out of sight, तिष्ठन् standing, निशितैःpointed, शरैः arrows, रामलक्ष्मणौ on Rama and Lakshmana, विव्याधtormented

Meaning

Riding in the aerial car, Indrajith remaining out of sight released pointed arrows from the sky and tormented Rama and Lakshmana standing in the battlefield.

YK-80-23Yuddha Kanda 80.23

तौतस्यशरवेगेनपरीतौरामलक्ष्मणौ । धनुषीसशरेकृत्वादिव्यमस्त्रंप्रचक्रतुः ।।6.80.23।।

tautasyaśaravegenaparītaurāmalakṣmaṇau | dhanuṣīsaśarekṛtvādivyamastrṃpracakratuḥ ||6.80.23||

Translation

तस्य by the, शरवेगेन speed of the arrows, परीतौ covered, तौरामलक्ष्मणौ both Rama and Lakshman, धनुषी bows, सशरे and arrows, कृत्वा discharging, दिव्यम् wonderful, अस्त्रम् weapon, प्रचक्रतुः exhibited

Meaning

Covered by the speed of the arrows released on them, both Rama and Lakshmana wielding their bows and arrows discharged wonderful arrows and exhibited their power.

YK-80-24Yuddha Kanda 80.24

प्रच्छादयन्तौगगनंशरजालैर्महाबलौ । तमस्त्रःसूर्यसङ्काशैर्नैवपस्पृशतुश्शरैः ।।6.80.24।।

pracchādayantaugaganṃśarajālairmahābalau | tamastrḥsūryasaṅkāśairnaivapaspṛśatuśśaraiḥ ||6.80.24||

Translation

महाबलौ mighty, शरजालैःnet of arrows, गगनम् sky, प्रच्छादयन्तौcovering, सूर्यसङ्काशैःresembling sun, अस्त्रःweapons, शरैः arrows, तम् they, न पस्पृशतुःnot touch

Meaning

Though the mighty Rama and Lakshmana were covering the sky with their arrows resembling the sun they could not touch Indrajith.

YK-80-25Yuddha Kanda 80.25

स हिधूमान्धकारं च चक्रेप्रच्चादयन्नभः । दिशश्चान्तर्दधेश्रीमान्नीहारतमसावृताः ।।6.80.25।।

sa hidhūmāndhakārṃ ca cakrepraccādayannabhḥ | diśaścāntardadheśrīmānnīhāratamasāvṛtāḥ ||6.80.25||

Translation

सःhe, सभःsky, प्रच्छादयन् obscured, धूमान्धकारम् darkness through smoke, चक्रे did, श्रीमान् glorious, नीहारतमसाdarkness through fog, वृताःsurrounded, दिशश्च directions, अन्तर्दधे invisible

Meaning

The glorious Indrajith obscured the sky by making it dark through smoke and fog and made the surrounding directions invisible.

YK-80-26Yuddha Kanda 80.26

नैवज्यातलनिर्घोषा न च नेमिखुरस्वनः । शुश्रुवेचरतस्तस्य न च रूपंप्रकाशते ।।6.80.26।।

naivajyātalanirghoṣā na ca nemikhurasvanḥ | śuśruvecaratastasya na ca rūpṃprakāśate ||6.80.26||

Translation

तस्य his, चरतः movement, ज्यातलनिर्घोषःsound produced by the palms, नैवशुश्रुवे nor the sounds, निमुखरसर्वनःच of the wheels or ho of s of horses, न च not heard, रूपं च form also, न प्रकाशते not visible

Meaning

While Indrajith was moving, neither the sounds produced by palms or of the wheels or the hoof s were heard and the form was also not visible.,

YK-80-27Yuddha Kanda 80.27

घनान्धकारेतिमिरेशरावर्षमिवाद्भुतम् । स ववर्षमहाबाहुर्नाराचशरवृष्टिभिः ।।6.80.27।।

ghanāndhakāretimireśarāvarṣamivādbhutam | sa vavarṣamahābāhurnārācaśaravṛṣṭibhiḥ ||6.80.27||

Translation

महाबाहुः mighty armed, सःhe, घानन्धकारे like the darkness of clouds, तिमिरे darkness, नाराचशरवृष्टिभिःrain of rocks and hails of steel arrows, अद्भुतम् wonderful, शरवर्षमिव rain of arrows, ववर्ष showered

Meaning

The mighty armed Indrajith showered rocks and hails of steel arrows in that pitch darkness like the darkness of clouds.

स रामंसूर्यसङ्काशैश्शरैर्धत्तवरोर्भृशम् । विव्याधसमरेक्रुद्धःसर्वगात्रेषुरावणिः ।।6.80.28।।

sa rāmṃsūryasaṅkāśaiśśarairdhattavarorbhṛśam | vivyādhasamarekruddhḥsarvagātreṣurāvaṇiḥ ||6.80.28||

Translation

समरे in conflict, क्रुद्धःangry, सः he, रावणिः Ravana's son, दत्तवरैःboons bestowed, सूर्यसङ्काशैः effulgent as the sun, शरैः arrows, रामम् on Rama, सर्वगात्रेषु all over the limbs, भृशम् grievously, विव्याध pierced

Meaning

In that conflict, the enraged son of Ravana, pierced all over Rama's limbs, with arrows bestowed to him, which were as effulgent as the Sun.

तौहन्यमानौनाराचैर्धाराभिरिवपर्वतौ । हेमपुङ्खान्नरव्याघ्रौतिग्मान्मुमुचतुःशरान् ।।6.80.29।।

tauhanyamānaunārācairdhārābhirivaparvatau | hemapuṅkhānnaravyāghrautigmānmumucatuḥśarān ||6.80.29||

Translation

धाराभिः flow of arrows, पर्वतौइव like two mountains, नाराचैःsteel arrows, हन्यमानौ tormented, नरव्याघ्रौ tiger among humans, तौ two of them, हेमपुङ्खान् golden shafted arrows, तिग्मान् sharp pointed, शरान् arrows, मुमुचतुःreleased

Meaning

The tigers among humans, Rama, and Lakshmana, like two mountains hit by steel arrows, released sharp pointedgold shafted steel arrows and tormented (Indrajith).

अन्तरिक्षेसमासाद्यरावणिंकङ्कपत्रिणः । निकृत्यपतगाभूमौसेतुस्तेशोणितोक्षिताः ।।6.80.30।।

antarikṣesamāsādyarāvaṇiṃkaṅkapatriṇḥ | nikṛtyapatagābhūmausetusteśoṇitokṣitāḥ ||6.80.30||

Translation

कङ्कपत्रिणः arrows fixed with swords, ते those, पतगाः wings, अन्तरिक्षेः sky, रावणिम् at Ravana's son, समासाद्य reaching, निकृत्य piercing him, शोणितोक्षिताः soaked in blood, भूमौ on ground, पेतुःfell

Meaning

The arrows fixed with swords like wings, reaching Ravana's son in the sky pierced him and he fell down soaked in blood.

YK-80-31Yuddha Kanda 80.31

शरौघेण by the mass of arrows, अतिमात्रम् brightened, पीड्यमानौ hurt, नरोत्तमौ best of men, पततःfalling, तान् them, इषून् arrows, अनेकैःnumerous, भल्लैःBhallas, विचकर्ततुःtear

Meaning

Brightened by the mass of arrows on their body, the best of men, Rama and Lakshmana began to tear the numerous arrows called Bhallas.

YK-80-32Yuddha Kanda 80.32

यतोहिददृशातेतौशरान् निपतितान्शितान् । ततस्तुतौदाशरथीससृजातेऽस्त्रमुत्तमम् ।।6.80.32।।

yatohidadṛśātetauśarān nipatitānśitān | tatastutaudāśarathīsasṛjāte'stramuttamam ||6.80.32||

Translation

तौ both, यतः that way, निपतितान् falling, शितान् sharp, शरान् arrows, ददृशाते from which direction, ततः then, तौ they both दाशरथी on sons of Dasharatha, उत्तमम् best, अस्त्रम् weapon, ससृजातेdirected

Both the sons of Dasharatha, directed their best weapons in the direction from where arrows were falling on two of them.

रावणिस्तुदिशस्सर्वारथेनातिरथोऽपतत् । विव्याधतौदाशरथीलघ्वस्त्रनिशितैःशरैः ।।6.80.33।।

अतिरथःgood chariot warrior, रावणिस्तु son of Ravana also, रथेन from the aerial car, सर्वाः all, दिशःdirections, आपतत् coursed, लघ्वस्त्रः swift in discharging, तौदाशरथी two sons of Dasharatha, निशितैः pointed, शरैः arrows, विव्याध pierced

Meaning

The son of Ravana who was a superior chariot warrior and swift in discharging arrows coursed through all directions and pierced arrows at Rama and Lakshmana from the aerial car.

YK-80-34Yuddha Kanda 80.34

तेनातिविद्धौतौवीरौरुक्मपुङ्खैःसुसम्हतैः । बभूवतुर्धाशरथीपुष्पितामिवकिंशुकौ ।।6.80.34।।

tenātividdhautauvīraurukmapuṅkhaiḥsusamhataiḥ | babhūvaturdhāśarathīpuṣpitāmivakiṃśukau ||6.80.34||

Translation

सुसम्हतैः wellmade fully stretched, रुक्मपुङ्खैः gold shafted arrows, तेन by that, अतिविद्धौ severely hurt, वीरौ heroes, तौदाशरथी both sons of Dasharatha, पुष्पितौ in blossom, किंशुकौइव like Kimsuka, बभूवतुःappeared

Meaning

Both the sons of Dasharatha looked like fully blossomed Kimsuka trees (blood flowing from the body) pierced by wellmade gold shafted arrows.

YK-80-35Yuddha Kanda 80.35

नास्यवेगगतिंकचशिन्न च रूपंधनुश्शरान् । न चान्यद्विदितंकिञ्चित्सूर्यस्येवाभ्रसम्प्लवे ।।6.80.35।।

nāsyavegagatiṃkacaśinna ca rūpṃdhanuśśarān | na cānyadviditṃkiñcitsūryasyevābhrasamplave ||6.80.35||

Translation

वाभ्रसम्प्लवे thickly cast with clouds, सूर्यस्येव except the position of sun, अस्य his, वेगगतिम् swift movement, कचशित् is not known, न neither, रूपम् form, धनुःbow, शरान् arrows, न not, अन्यत् other than, किञ्चित् even a little, न विदितम् not visible

Meaning

When the clouds are cast thickly, except the position of the Sun, nothing is visible. So also, with a swift movement of Indrajith, neither his form nor his bow and arrows were visible.

YK-80-36Yuddha Kanda 80.36

तेनविद्धाश्चहरयोनिहताश्चगतासवः । बभूवुःशतशस्तत्रपतिताधरणीतले ।।6.80.36।।

tenaviddhāścaharayonihatāścagatāsavḥ | babhūvuḥśataśastatrapatitādharaṇītale ||6.80.36||

Translation

लक्ष्मणस्तुततस्सुङ्क्रृद्धोभ्रातरंवाक्यमब्रवीत् । ब्राह्ममस्त्रंप्रयोक्ष्यामिवधार्थंसर्वरक्षसाम् ।।6.80.37।।

lakṣmaṇastutatassuṅkrṛddhobhrātarṃvākyamabravīt | brāhmamastrṃprayokṣyāmivadhārthṃsarvarakṣasām ||6.80.37||

Translation

ततः there, लक्ष्मणस्तु even Lakshmana, सङ्क्रृद्धः enraged, भ्रातरम् brother, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke, सर्वरक्षसाम् all the Rakshasas, वधार्थम् will kill, ब्राह्मम् अस्त्रम् by Brahma's weapon, प्रयोक्ष्यामिwill use

Meaning

Then Lakshmana also, enraged, spoke to his brother, saying," I will kill all the Rakshasas using the weapon of Brahma."

तमुवाचततोरामोलक्ष्मणंशुभलक्षणम् । नैकस्यहेतोरक्षांसिपृथिव्यांहन्तुमर्हसि ।।6.80.38।।

tamuvācatatorāmolakṣmaṇṃśubhalakṣaṇam | naikasyahetorakṣāṃsipṛthivyāṃhantumarhasi ||6.80.38||

Translation

ततः then, रामः Rama, शुभलक्षणम् gifted with auspicious signs, तंलक्ष्मणम् that Lakshmana, उवाच said, एकस्यहेतोः for the sake of one, पृथिव्याम् on the earth, रक्षांसि Rakshasas, हन्तुम् killing, न अर्हसि ought not

Meaning

To Lakshmana, gifted with auspicious signs, Rama said" for the sake of killing one Rakshasa, you are not to kill all the Rakshasas on the earth."

YK-80-39Yuddha Kanda 80.39

अयुध्यमानंप्रच्छन्नंप्राञ्जलिंशरणागतम् । पलायमानंमत्तंवा न हन्तुंत्वमिहार्हसि ।।6.80.39।।

ayudhyamānṃpracchannṃprāñjaliṃśaraṇāgatam | palāyamānṃmattṃvā na hantuṃtvamihārhasi ||6.80.39||

Translation

इह here, त्वम् you, अयुध्यमानम् without waging war, प्रच्छन्नम् not fighting, has hidden, प्राञ्जलिम् folded palms, शरणागतम् one who surrenders, पलायमानम् one who runs away, मत्तंवा not alert, हन्तुम् to kill, न अर्हसिought not

Meaning

"You should not kill anyone who is not waging war, not fighting and hidden, one with folded palms surrendered, one who runs away from war and not alert in war"

अस्यैवतुवधेयत्नंकरिष्यावोमहाभुज । आदेक्ष्यावोमहावेगावस्त्रानाशीविषोपमान् ।।6.80.40।।

asyaivatuvadheyatnṃkariṣyāvomahābhuja | ādekṣyāvomahāvegāvastrānāśīviṣopamān ||6.80.40||

Translation

महाभुज mighty armed, अस्यैव I will, वधे kill, यत्नम् effort, करिष्यावःwill make, महावेगान् endowed with high speed, आशीविषोपमान् venomous serpents, अस्त्रान् weapons, आदेक्ष्यावःwill command

Meaning

"O mighty armed Lakshmana! I will make an effort to kill Indrajith by commanding weapons like venomous serpents endowed with high speed."

तमेनंमायिनंक्षुद्रमन्तर्हितरथंबलात् । राक्षसंनिहनिष्यन्तिदृष्टवावानरयूथपाः ।।6.80.41।।

tamenṃmāyinṃkṣudramantarhitarathṃbalāt | rākṣasṃnihaniṣyantidṛṣṭavāvānarayūthapāḥ ||6.80.41||

Translation

मायिनम् conjurer, क्षुद्रम् mean, अन्तर्हितरथम् invisible with chariot तमेनं if seen, एनम् in any way, राक्षसम् Rakshasa, दृष्टवा seeing, वानरयूथपाःVanara troops, बलात् strength, निहनिष्यन्ति forcibly kill

Meaning

" A conjurer, mean, and invisible Indrajith with the chariot, if seen, in any way the Vanara troops will forcibly kill him with their strength."

YK-80-42Yuddha Kanda 80.42

यद्येषभूमिंविशतेदिवंवारसातलंवापिनभस्स्थलंवा । एवंनिगूढोऽममास्त्रदग्धःपतिष्यतेभूमितलेगतासुः ।।6.80.42।।

yadyeṣabhūmiṃviśatedivṃvārasātalṃvāpinabhassthalṃvā | evṃnigūḍho'mamāstradagdhḥpatiṣyatebhūmitalegatāsuḥ ||6.80.42||

Translation

यद्येषः by himself, भूमिम् into earth, विशतेयदिenters also, दिवंवा heaven or, रसातलंवापि underground, नभस्तलंवा subterranean world, एवम् in that way, निगूढोऽपि remains hidden, ममmy, अस्त्रदग्धःweapon, गतासुः consumed, भूमितले on the ground, पतिष्यतेwill fall

"If he enters into earth, heaven or the underground world or the subterranean world or remains hidden, my weapon will consume him, and he will fall on earth."
