शिरस्यञ्जलिमाधायकैकेय्यानन्दवर्धनः । बभाषेभरतोज्येष्ठंरामंसत्यपराक्रमम् ।।6.131.1।।

śirasyañjalimādhāyakaikeyyānandavardhanḥ | babhāṣebharatojyeṣṭhṃrāmṃsatyaparākramam ||6.131.1||

Translation

कैकेय्यानन्दवर्धनः enhancer of Kaikeyi's joy, भरतः Bharata, शिरसि head, अञ्जलिम् folded hands, आधाय submitted, सत्यपराक्रमम् unfailing valour, ज्येष्ठम् to elder, रामम् Rama, बभाषे spoke

Meaning

Bharata, the enhancer of Kaikeyi's joy, of unfailing valour, with folded palms on head submitted to his elder brother.

YK-131-2Yuddha Kanda 131.2

पूजितामामिकामातादत्तंराज्यमिदंमम । तद्ददामिपुनस्तुभ्यंयथात्वमददामम ।।6.131.2।।

pūjitāmāmikāmātādattṃrājyamidṃmama | taddadāmipunastubhyṃyathātvamadadāmama ||6.131.2||

Translation

मामिका mine, माता mother, पूजिता worshipped, इदंराज्यम् this kingdom, मम myself, दत्तम् bestowed, तत् that, त्वम् to you, मम me, यथा as it is, आददाः returning, पुनः again, तुभ्यम् and now, ददामि giving

Meaning

"This kingdom was bestowed on me and my mother. I return it back to you now again."

YK-131-3Yuddha Kanda 131.3

धुरमेकाकिनान्यस्तांवृषभेणबलीयसा । किशोरवद्गुरुंभारं न वोढुमहमुत्सहे ।।6.131.3।।

dhuramekākinānyastāṃvṛṣabheṇabalīyasā | kiśoravadguruṃbhārṃ na voḍhumahamutsahe ||6.131.3||

Translation

बलीयसा strong, एकाकिना alone, वृषभेण young ox, न्यस्ताम् transferred to, धुरम् burden, किशोरवत् like young, गुरुम् heavy, भारम् burden, अहम् I, वोढुम् bull, न उत्सहे not able to bear

Meaning

"I am not able to bear the heavy burden transferred to me any more like a young ox can't bear like a bull.

YK-131-4Yuddha Kanda 131.4

वारिवेगेनमहताभिन्नस्सेतुरिवक्षरन् । दुर्बन्धनमिदंमन्येराज्यच्छ्रिदमसम्वृतम् ।।6.131.4।।

vārivegenamahatābhinnasseturivakṣaran | durbandhanamidṃmanyerājyacchridamasamvṛtam ||6.131.4||

Translation

महता great, वारिवेगेन strong rush of water, भिन्नः breached, क्षरन् have no effect, सेतुरिव like dam, इदम् this, राज्यच्छ्रिदम् kingdom containing vulnerable points, असम्वृतम् not protected well, दुर्बन्धम् difficult, मन्ये I think

Meaning

"If the kingdom containing vulnerable points is not protected on all sides, it can't stand, just as a strong rush of water can be prevented from breach only by constructing a dam.

YK-131-5Yuddha Kanda 131.5

गतिंखरइवाश्वस्यहंसस्येव च वायसः । नान्वेतुमुत्सहेराम तवमार्गमरिन्दम ।।6.131.5।।

gatiṃkharaivāśvasyahṃsasyeva ca vāyasḥ | nānvetumutsaherāma tavamārgamarindama ||6.131.5||

Translation

खरइवा like donkey, गतिं not go, श्वस्य horse, हंसस्येव च and like swan च वायसः crow not run, अरिन्दम tormentor of enemies, तव your, मार्गम् way, अन्वेतुम्, राम Rama, न उत्सहे not able to नान्वेतु like you

Meaning

"O Rama! Donkey can't run like horse crow can't run like swan. I am not able to bear the burden of kingdom like you, O tormentor of enemies."

YK-131-6-8Yuddha Kanda 131.6–8 (त्रिकम्)

यथाचारोपितोवृक्षोजातश्चार्न्न्तिवेशने । महांश्चसुदुरारोहोमहास्कन्दःप्रशाखवान् ।।6.131.6।। शीर्येतपुष्पितोभूत्वा न फलानिप्रदर्शयन् । तस्यनानुभवेदर्थंयस्यहेतोस्सरोपितः ।।6.131.7।। एषोपमामहाबाहोत्वमर्थंवेत्तुमर्हसि । यद्यस्मान्मनुजेन्द्रत्वंभर्ताभृत्यान्नशाधिहि ।।6.131.8।।

yathācāropitovṛkṣojātaścārnntiveśane | mahāṃścasudurārohomahāskandḥpraśākhavān ||6.131.6|| śīryetapuṣpitobhūtvā na phalānipradarśayan | tasyanānubhavedarthṃyasyahetossaropitḥ ||6.131.7|| eṣopamāmahābāhotvamarthṃvettumarhasi | yadyasmānmanujendratvṃbhartābhṛtyānnaśādhihi ||6.131.8||

Translation

अन्नर्निवेशने your own house, आरोपितः to climb, वृक्षः tree, महान् huge, दुरारोहः difficult to climb, महास्कन्दः large trunk, प्रशाखवान् many branches, जातःअसि born, पुष्पितःभूत्वा after flowering, फलानि fruits, न प्रदर्शयन् not yield, यथा so also, शीर्येत withered, सः he, यस्यहेतोः the cause, रोपितः planted, तस्य his, अर्थम् meaning, नानुभवेत् will not enjoy, एषा in that way, उपमा example, महाबाहो mighty armed, मनुजेन्द्र ruler of the people, त्वम् you, भर्ता rule, भृत्यान् dependants, नः not, न शाधियदिहि not take care, त्वम् you, अर्थम् understand, वेत्तुम् solicit, अर्हसि ought

Meaning

"If for example you have planted a tree in your own house, it becomes huge and difficult to climb in spite of a large trunk, many branches and after flowering does not yield fruits and is withered, the person who planted will not enjoy the fruit. In that way O mighty armed Rama, you are the ruler of the people, if you would not take care of us, your dependants, I solicit you ought to understand what I mean.

YK-131-9Yuddha Kanda 131.9

जगदद्याभिषिक्तंत्वामनुपश्यतुराघव । प्रतपन्तमिवादित्यंमध्याह्नेदीप्ततेजसम् ।।6.131.9।।

jagadadyābhiṣiktṃtvāmanupaśyaturāghava | pratapantamivādityṃmadhyāhnedīptatejasam ||6.131.9||

Translation

राघव Raghava, जगत् world, अद्य today, अभिषिक्तम् consecration, त्वाम् you, मध्याह्ने in the afternoon, प्रतपन्तम् dazzling, दीप्ततेजसम् in brilliance, आदित्यमिव like the sun, अनुपश्यतु see you

Meaning

"Raghava, let you be consecrated in the afternoon and the world will see you dazzling in brilliance like the sun today."

तूर्यसङ्घान्तिर्घोषैःकाञ्चीनूपुरनिःस्वनैः । मधुरैर्गीतशब्दैश्चप्रतिबुध्यस्वशेष्व च ।।6.131.10।।

tūryasaṅghāntirghoṣaiḥkāñcīnūpuraniḥsvanaiḥ | madhurairgītaśabdaiścapratibudhyasvaśeṣva ca ||6.131.10||

Translation

तूर्यसङ्घान्तिर्घोषैः sounds of musical instruments, काञ्चीनूपुरनिःस्वनैः tinkling of ornaments strung with tiny bells, मधुरैः sweet, गीतशब्दैश्च sounds of singing, प्रतिबुध्यस्व worn around waist and anklets, शेष्व च and sweet

Meaning

May you wake up to the sounds of musical instruments and the tinkling of ornaments worn around the waist and anklets and sweet sounds of singing.

YK-131-11Yuddha Kanda 131.11

यावदावर्ततेचक्रंयावती च वसुन्धरा । तावत्त्वमिहलोकस्यस्वामित्वमनुवर्तय ।।6.131.11।।

yāvadāvartatecakrṃyāvatī ca vasundharā | tāvattvamihalokasyasvāmitvamanuvartaya ||6.131.11||

Translation

चक्रम् stellar sphere, यावत् as long as, आवर्तते goes round, वसुन्धरा earth, यावत् that long, तावत् till then, इह here, लोकस्य in the world, स्वामित्वम् rulership, अनुवर्तय revolves

Meaning

As long as the stellar sphere goes round, and as long as the earth revolves around that long you enjoy the rulership of the world."

YK-131-12Yuddha Kanda 131.12

भरतस्यवच्श्रुत्वारामःपरपुरञ्जयः । तथेतिप्रतिजग्राहनिषसादासनेशुभे ।।6.131.12।।

bharatasyavacśrutvārāmḥparapurañjayḥ | tathetipratijagrāhaniṣasādāsaneśubhe ||6.131.12||

Translation

परपुरञ्जयः conqueror of enemies, रामः Rama, भरतस्य Bharata's, वचः words, श्रुत्वा hearing, तथेति be it so, प्रतिजग्राह replied, शुभे auspicious, आसने seat, निषषाद seated

Meaning

Hearing Bharata's words, the conqueror of enemies, Rama said 'Be it so'. Then Bharata took the auspicious seat.

YK-131-13Yuddha Kanda 131.13

ततश्शत्रुघ्नवचनान्निपुणाःश्मश्रुवर्धनाः । सुखहस्ताःसुशीघ्राश्चराघवंपर्यवारयन् ।।6.131.13।।

tataśśatrughnavacanānnipuṇāḥśmaśruvardhanāḥ | sukhahastāḥsuśīghrāścarāghavṃparyavārayan ||6.131.13||

Translation

ततः then, शत्रुघ्नवचनात् Shatrughna's words, निपुणाः expert, सुखहस्ताः skilled at hand, सुशीघ्राश्च hastily, श्मश्रुवर्धनाः soft skilled, राघवम् Raghava, पर्यवारयन् surrounded

Meaning

Then at the command of Shatrughna's words, experts with hand work (barbers) who had soft skills quickly surrounded Raghava.

YK-131-14-15Yuddha Kanda 131.14–15 (युग्मम्)

पूर्वंतुभरतेस्नातेलक्ष्मणे च महाबले । सुग्रीवेवानरेन्द्रे च राक्षसेन्द्रेविभीषणे ।।6.131.14।। विशोधितजटस्स्नातश्चित्रमाल्यानुलेपनः । महार्हवसनोपेतस्तस्थौतत्रश्रियाज्वलन् ।।6.131.15।।

pūrvṃtubharatesnātelakṣmaṇe ca mahābale | sugrīvevānarendre ca rākṣasendrevibhīṣaṇe ||6.131.14|| viśodhitajaṭassnātaścitramālyānulepanḥ | mahārhavasanopetastasthautatraśriyājvalan ||6.131.15||

Translation

पूर्वम् first, भरते Bharata, स्नाते had bath, महाबले mighty, लक्ष्मणे च Lakshmana also, वानरेन्द्रे Vanara king, सुग्रीवे Sugriva, राक्षसेन्द्रे Rakshasa king, विभीषणे Vibheeshana, विशोधितजटः removed the matted hair, स्नातः had bath, चित्रमाल्यानुलेपनः adorned with colourful garlands and daubed with sandal paste, महार्हवसनोपेतः clothed in exquisite robes, तत्र then, श्रिया shining, ज्वलन् glowing, तस्थौ stood

Meaning

Bharata had his bath first, and mighty Lakshmana, Sugriva the monkey king, and Vibheeshana the Rakshasa king followed him. Sri Rama removed the matted hair, had bath, adorned with colourful garlands, and daubed with sandal paste and clothed in exquisite robes stood glowing and shining.

YK-131-16Yuddha Kanda 131.16

प्रतिकर्म च रामस्यकारयामासवीर्यवान । लक्ष्मणस्य च लक्ष्मीवानिक्ष्वाकुकुलवर्धनः ।।6.131.16।।

pratikarma ca rāmasyakārayāmāsavīryavāna | lakṣmaṇasya ca lakṣmīvānikṣvākukulavardhanḥ ||6.131.16||

वीर्यवान् valiant, लक्ष्मीवान् prosperous, इक्ष्वाकुकुलवर्धनः enhancer of the glory of Ikshvaku race, रामस्य Rama's, लक्ष्मणस्य च and Lakshmana's, प्रतिकर्म decorated, कारयामास did

Meaning

Then valiant and prosperous, Shatrughna, who is an enhancer of the glory of Ikshvaku race decorated Sri Rama and Lakshmana (duly with ornaments).

प्रतिकर्मचसीतायास्सर्वादशरथस्त्रियः । आत्मनैवतदाचक्रुर्मनस्विन्योमनोहरम् ।।6.131.17।।

pratikarmacasītāyāssarvādaśarathastriyḥ | ātmanaivatadācakrurmanasvinyomanoharam ||6.131.17||

Translation

तदा then, सर्वाः all, मनस्विन्यः nobleminded, दशरथस्त्रियः Dasharatha's wives, सीतायाः for Sita, मनोहरम् beautiful, प्रतिकर्म decoration, आत्मनैव themselves, चक्रुः did

Then all the nobleminded Dasharatha's wives themselves decorated Sita beautifully.

YK-131-18Yuddha Kanda 131.18

ततोवानरपत्नीनांसर्वासामेवशोभनम् । चकारयत्नात्कौसल्याप्रहृष्टापुत्रवत्सला ।।6.131.18।।

tatovānarapatnīnāṃsarvāsāmevaśobhanam | cakārayatnātkausalyāprahṛṣṭāputravatsalā ||6.131.18||

Translation

ततः then, प्रहृष्टाः very delighted, पुत्रवत्सला lover of her sons, कौसल्या Kausalya, सर्वासाम् all, वानरपत्नीनाम् for the wives of Vanaras, यत्नात् took effort, शोभनम् in splendid manner to decorate, चकार started

तत: श्शत्रुघ्नवचनात्सुमन्त्रोनामसारथिः । योजयित्वाभिचक्रामरथंसर्वाङ्गशोभनम् ।।6.131.19।।

tata: śśatrughnavacanātsumantronāmasārathiḥ | yojayitvābhicakrāmarathṃsarvāṅgaśobhanam ||6.131.19||

Translation

ततः then, सुमन्त्रोनाम named Sumantra, सारथिःcharioteer, शत्रुघ्नवचनात् by the command of Shatrughna, सर्वाङ्गशोभनम् all parts of the body, रथम् chariot, योजयित्वा yoked, अभिचक्राम came there

Then Sumantra the charioteer, commanded by Shatrughna came there with all parts of the chariot decorated and yoked.

अर्कमण्डलसङ्काशंदिव्यंदृष्टवारथंस्थितम् । आरुरोहमहाबाहूरामःपरपुरंञ्जयः ।।6.131.20।।

arkamaṇḍalasaṅkāśṃdivyṃdṛṣṭavārathṃsthitam | ārurohamahābāhūrāmḥparapurṃñjayḥ ||6.131.20||

Translation

अर्कमण्डलसङ्काशम् like the radiance of the planet sun, स्थितम् stood, दिव्यम् wonderful, रथम् chariot, दृष्टवा seeing, महाबाहुः mighty armed, परपुरंञ्जयः the conqueror of hostile enemies, रामः Rama, आरुरोह ascended

Seeing the wonderful chariot like the radiance of the planet sun, mighty armed Rama the conqueror of hostile enemies ascended.

सुग्रीवोहनुमांश्चैवमहेन्द्रसदृशद्युती । स्नातौदिव्यनिभैर्वस्त्रैर्जग्मतुश्शुभकुण्डलौ ।।6.131.21।।

sugrīvohanumāṃścaivamahendrasadṛśadyutī | snātaudivyanibhairvastrairjagmatuśśubhakuṇḍalau ||6.131.21||

महेन्द्रसदृशद्युती vied with Mahendra in splendour, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, हनुमांश्चैव even Hanuman, स्नातौ having bathed, शुभकुण्डलौ wearing sparkling earrings, दिव्यनिभैः heavenly, वस्त्रः clothes, जग्मतुः started

सर्वाभरणजुष्टाश्चयुयुस्तश्शुभकुण्डलाः । सुग्रीवपत्नयःसीता च द्रष्टुंनगरमुत्सुकाः ।।6.131.22।।

sarvābharaṇajuṣṭāścayuyustaśśubhakuṇḍalāḥ | sugrīvapatnayḥsītā ca draṣṭuṃnagaramutsukāḥ ||6.131.22||

Translation

ताः they, सुग्रीवपत्नयाः Sugriva's wife, सीता च and Sita, सर्वाभरणजुष्टाः wearing all kinds of ornaments, शुभकुण्डलाः auspicious earrings, नगरम् city, द्रष्टुम् to see, उत्सुकाः enthused, ययुः departed

Sugriva's wife and Sita decked with all kinds of ornaments and earrings, enthused to see the city, started.

अयोध्यायांतुसचिवाराज्ञोदशरथस्य च । पुरोहितंपुरस्कृत्यमन्त्रयामासुरर्थवत् ।।6.131.23।।

अशोकोविजयश्चैवसिद्धार्थश्चसमाहिताः । मन्त्रयन्रामवृध्यर्थंबुध्यर्थंनगरस्य च ।।6.131.24।।

aśokovijayaścaivasiddhārthaścasamāhitāḥ | mantrayanrāmavṛdhyarthṃbudhyarthṃnagarasya ca ||6.131.24||

अशोकः Ashoka, विजयश्चैव Vijaya, सिद्धार्थश्च Siddhartha, समाहिताः collected, रामवृद्ध्यर्थम् for the growth of Rama, नगरस्य and city, बुदद्यर्थम् consulting, मन्त्रयन् thought of

सर्वमेवाभिषेकार्थंजयार्हस्यमहात्मनः । कर्तुमर्हथरामस्ययद्यन्मङ्गलपूर्वकम् ।।6.131.25।।

sarvamevābhiṣekārthṃjayārhasyamahātmanḥ | kartumarhatharāmasyayadyanmaṅgalapūrvakam ||6.131.25||

जयार्हस्य for the success, महात्मनः of great soul, रामस्य Rama's, अभिषेकार्थम् for the consecration, यद्यत् Whatever, सर्वम् all, मङ्गलपूर्वकम् auspicious, कर्तुम् to do, अर्हथ who deserves

For the success of the great soul Rama's consecration, whatever was auspicious, all that ought to be done as he deserves.

इतितेमन्त्रिणस्सर्वेसन्दिश्य च पुरोहितम् । नगरान्निर्ययुस्तूर्णंरामदर्शनबुद्धयः ।।6.131.26।।

ititemantriṇassarvesandiśya ca purohitam | nagarānniryayustūrṇṃrāmadarśanabuddhayḥ ||6.131.26||

Translation

ते they, सर्वे all, मत्रनिणःministers, पुरोहितम् priests, इति thus, सन्दिश्य communicating, रामदर्शनबुद्धयः for having a glance of Rama, तूर्णम् speedily, नगरात् from the city, निर्ययुः set forth

All those ministers, priests thus communicating with each other, speedily set forth to have a glance at Sri Rama.

हरियुक्तंसहस्राक्षोरथमिन्द्रइवानघः । प्रययौरथमास्थायरामोनगरमुत्तमम् ।।6.131.27।।

hariyuktṃsahasrākṣorathamindraivānaghḥ | prayayaurathamāsthāyarāmonagaramuttamam ||6.131.27||

सहस्राक्षः thousand eyed, इन्द्रः Indra, हरियुक्तम् green horses, रथमिव chariot like, अनघः sinless, रामः Rama, उत्तमम् excellent, रथम् chariot, आस्थाय seated, नगरम् to the city, प्रययौ departed

Like the thousand eyed Indra seated in the excellent chariot yoked to green horses, the sinless Rama departed to the city.

जग्राहभरतोरमशीन्शत्रुघ्नश्चत्रमाददे । लक्ष्मणोव्यजनंतस्यमूर्ध्निसम्पर्यवीजयत् ।।6.131.28।। श्वेतं च वालव्यजनंजगृहेपरितस्स्थितः । अपरंचन्द्रसङ्काशंराक्षसेन्द्रोविभीषणः ।।6.131.29।।

jagrāhabharatoramaśīnśatrughnaścatramādade | lakṣmaṇovyajanṃtasyamūrdhnisamparyavījayat ||6.131.28|| śvetṃ ca vālavyajanṃjagṛheparitassthitḥ | aparṃcandrasaṅkāśṃrākṣasendrovibhīṣaṇḥ ||6.131.29||

भरतः Bharata, रमशीन् reins, जग्राह took hold, शत्रुघ्नः Shatrughna, छत्रम् parasol, तस्य his, मूर्ध्नि in front, आददे took, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, व्यजनम् fan, सम्पर्यवीजयत् for fanning, परितः held, स्थितः stood, राक्षसेन्द्रः Rakshasa king, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, चन्द्रसङ्काशम् like the moon, श्वेतम् white, अपरम् whisk, वालव्यजनम् for driving the air, जगृहे took hold

Meaning

Bharata held the reins, Shatrughna took hold of the parasol, Lakshmana standing in front held the fan, and the Rakshasa king Vibheeshana held a white whisk which was like a moon for driving the air.

ऋषिसङ्घैस्तदाकाशेदेवैश्चसमरुद्गणैः । स्तूयमास्यरामस्यशुश्रुवमधुरध्वनिः ।।6.131.30।।

ṛṣisaṅghaistadākāśedevaiścasamarudgaṇaiḥ | stūyamāsyarāmasyaśuśruvamadhuradhvaniḥ ||6.131.30||

Translation

तदा then, रामस्य Rama's, ऋषिसङ्घैः host of sages, समरुद्गणैः Rudras, देवैश्च gods, आकाशे in the sky, स्तूयमानस्य started praising, मधुरध्वनिः sweet sounding, शुश्रुवे heard.

Meaning

Then the host of sages, Rudras and gods from the heaven started praising Rama with sweet sounding chanting.

YK-131-31Yuddha Kanda 131.31

ततःशत्रुञ्जयंनामकुञ्जरंपर्वतोपमम् । आरुरोहमहातेजास्सुग्रीवःप्लवगर्षभः ।।6.131.31।।

tatḥśatruñjayṃnāmakuñjarṃparvatopamam | ārurohamahātejāssugrīvḥplavagarṣabhḥ ||6.131.31||

Translation

ततः then, प्लवगर्षभः bull among monkeys, महातेजाः resplendent, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, शत्रुञ्जयंनाम Satrumjaya by name, पर्वतोपमम् like a mountain, कुञ्जरम् elephant, आरुरोह ascended

Meaning

Then resplendent Sugriva, the bull among Vanaras, ascended the mountain like elephant by the name Satrumjaya.

नवनागसहस्राणिययुरास्थायवानराः । मानुषंविग्रहंकृत्वासर्वाभरणभूषिताः ।।6.131.32।।

Meaning

Meaning

In the past, Manu was consecrated with a crown encrusted with gems crafted by Brahma and it was adorned at consecration by successive kings. After the consecration, Rama was dazzling seated on a throne made of several kinds of gems as per tradition. The council hall was also made of gold with charming pictures and looked splendid. The great soul Raghava was crowned and adorned with ornaments by Vasishta and the priests.

Translation

ऋषिणा by the sage, कृताम् composed, इमाम् this, रामस्य Rama's, संहिताम् full of great meaning, भक्त्या with devotion, लिखन्ति च write this, तेषाम् for them, त्रिविष्टपे in the heaven, वासः will reside

कुटुम्बवृद्धिंधनधान्यवृद्धिंस्त्रियश्चमुख्यास्सुखमुत्तमं च । श्रुत्वाशुभंकाव्यमिदंमहार्थंप्राप्नोतिसर्वांभुविचार्थसिद्धम् ।।6.131.124।।

kuṭumbavṛddhiṃdhanadhānyavṛddhiṃstriyaścamukhyāssukhamuttamṃ ca | śrutvāśubhṃkāvyamidṃmahārthṃprāpnotisarvāṃbhuvicārthasiddham ||6.131.124||

Translation

महार्थम् great meaning, शुभम् auspicious, काव्यम् epic, श्रुत्वा listening, कुटुम्बवृद्धिम् growth of the family, धनधान्यवृद्धिम् augmentation of wealth, grains, मुख्याः mainly, स्त्रियश्च women also, उत्तमम् excellent, सुखं च comfort, भुवि on earth, सर्वाम् all, अर्थसिद्धिं च accomplishment of one's objects, प्राप्नोति will result.
