SK-41-1Sundara Kanda 41.1

स च वाग्भिः प्रशस्ताभिर्गमिष्यन्पूजितस्तया। तस्माद्देशादपक्रम्य चिन्तयामास वानरः।।5.41.1।।

sa ca vāgbhiḥ praśastābhirgamiṣyanpūjitastayā| tasmāddeśādapakramya cintayāmāsa vānarḥ||5.41.1||

Translation

गमिष्यन् to depart, सः वानरः that vanara, तया by her, प्रशस्ताभिः with choicest, वाग्भिः with words, पूजितः honoured, तस्मात् from that, देशात् from location, अपक्रम्य moved, चिन्तयामास started thinking.

Meaning

Having been honoured and praised by Sita's words, Hanuman prepared to depart from Sita's presence.

SK-41-2Sundara Kanda 41.2

अल्पशेषमिदं कार्यं दृष्टेयमसितेक्षणा। त्रीनुपायानतिक्रम्य चतुर्थ: इह विद्यते।।5.41.2।।

alpaśeṣamidṃ kāryṃ dṛṣṭeyamasitekṣaṇā| trīnupāyānatikramya caturtha: iha vidyate||5.41.2||

Translation

इदं कार्यम् this work, अल्पशेषम् little more remains, इयम् this, असितेक्षणा blackeyed lady, दृष्टा seen, त्रीन् three expedientsnegotiation, presentation and, dissension (Sama, Dana, Bheda), उपायान् strategies, अतिक्रम्य crossing, इह here, चतुर्थ fourth (expedient) punishment (Danda), विद्यते remains.

SK-41-3Sundara Kanda 41.3

न साम रक्षस्सु गुणाय कल्पते न दानमर्थोपचितेषु युज्यते। न भेदसाध्या बलदर्पिता जनाः पराक्रमस्त्वेव ममेह रोचते।।5.41.3।।

na sāma rakṣassu guṇāya kalpate na dānamarthopaciteṣu yujyate| na bhedasādhyā baladarpitā janāḥ parākramastveva mameha rocate||5.41.3||

Translation

रक्षस्सु with demons, साम negotiation, गुणाय for any merit, न कल्पते does not lead, अर्थोपचितेषु being wealthy, दानम् gifts, न युज्यते not proper, बलदर्पिताः proud of their strength, जनाः people, भेदसाध्याः will not yield by sowing seeds of dissension, न not, इह here, मम my, पराक्रमस्त्वेव only by valour, रोचते pleases me.

Meaning

'With demons, negotiation is of no use. They are wealthy, they need no gifts. Proud of their stregth, the demons will not yield to dissension. I think only by using power it can be done.

SK-41-4Sundara Kanda 41.4

न चास्य कार्यस्य पराक्रमादृते विनिश्चयः कश्चिदिहोपपद्यते। हतप्रवीरा हि रणे हि राक्षसाः कथञ्चिदीयुर्यदिहाद्य मार्दवम्।।5.41.4।।

na cāsya kāryasya parākramādṛte viniścayḥ kaścidihopapadyate| hatapravīrā hi raṇe hi rākṣasāḥ kathañcidīyuryadihādya mārdavam||5.41.4||

Translation

इह here, अस्य of this, कार्यस्य of the task, पराक्रमात् ऋते other than power, विनिश्चयः a decision, कश्चित् even one, इह here, न उपपद्यते not hold good, यत् that, रणे in fight, हतप्रवीराः slay a few heroes, राक्षसाः ogres, अद्य to day, इह here, कथञ्चित् somehow, मार्दवम् soften, ईयुः will yield.

Meaning

'Other than power, there is no way to accomplish the task of ascertaining their strength. If I slay a few strong ogres somehow they may soften a little and yield.

SK-41-5Sundara Kanda 41.5

कार्ये कर्मणि निर्दिष्टे यो बहून्यपि साधयेत्। पूर्वकार्याविरोधेन स कार्यं कर्तुमर्हति।।5.41.5।।

kārye karmaṇi nirdiṣṭe yo bahūnyapi sādhayet| pūrvakāryāvirodhena sa kāryṃ kartumarhati||5.41.5||

Translation

कार्ये in a work to be accomplished, कर्मणि in a work, निर्दिष्टे when the work is entrusted, यः he who, पूर्वकार्याविरोधेन without affecting the earlier work, बहून्यपि many, साधयेत् will achieve, सः he, कार्यम् task, कर्तुम् to do, अर्हति is fit.

Meaning

'He, who can perform tasks in addition to the objective accomplished without affecting it, is really worthy.

SK-41-6Sundara Kanda 41.6

न ह्येकस्साधको हेतुस्स्वल्पस्यापीह कर्मणः। यो ह्यर्थं बहुधा वेद स समर्थोऽर्थसाधने।।5.41.6।।

na hyekassādhako hetussvalpasyāpīha karmaṇḥ| yo hyarthṃ bahudhā veda sa samartho'rthasādhane||5.41.6||

Translation

इह here, स्वल्पस्य of a trivial task, अपि also, कर्मणः of the task, साधकः effective, हेतुः cause, एकः one, न हि is not, यः he who, अर्थम् as an object, बहुधा in many ways (means of doing), वेद knows, सः he, अर्थसाधने in achieving the task, समर्थः capable.

Meaning

'There are ways more than one even to perform a small work. And the capable know it.

SK-41-7Sundara Kanda 41.7

इहैव तावत्कृतनिश्चयो ह्यहं यदि व्रजेयं प्लवगेश्वरालयम्। परात्मसम्मर्दविशेषतत्त्ववित्ततः कृतं स्यान्मम भर्तृशासनम्।।5.41.7।।

ihaiva tāvatkṛtaniścayo hyahṃ yadi vrajeyṃ plavageśvarālayam| parātmasammardaviśeṣatattvavittatḥ kṛtṃ syānmama bhartṛśāsanam||5.41.7||

Translation

अहम् I, इहैव here itself, तावत् therefore, परात्मसम्मर्दविशेषतत्त्ववित् by understanding the difference between the strength of enemy forces and our strength in war, प्लवगेश्वरालयम् abode of vanaras, व्रजेयं यदि if I go, ततः then, मम my, भर्तृशासनम् the orders of my lord, कृतम् executed, स्यात् well.

Meaning

'If I ascertain the difference in the strength of enemies and vanaras in war here itself and return to Kishkinda, the abode of vanaras, then I would have executed the orders of my lord properly.

SK-41-8Sundara Kanda 41.8

कथं नु खल्वद्य भवेत्सुखागतं प्रसह्य युद्धं मम राक्षसैः सह। तथैव खल्वात्मबलं च सारवत्सम्मानयेन्मां च रणे दशाननः।।5.41.8।।

kathṃ nu khalvadya bhavetsukhāgatṃ prasahya yuddhṃ mama rākṣasaiḥ saha| tathaiva khalvātmabalṃ ca sāravatsammānayenmāṃ ca raṇe daśānanḥ||5.41.8||

Translation

अद्य today, मम for me, राक्षसैः सह with ogres, प्रसह्य enduring, युद्धम् war, कथं नु how to, सुखागतम् happy coming, भवेत् may be, तथैव in that way, आत्मबलं च our strength, सारवत् substantial, सः he, दशाननः च tenheaded Ravana's, माम् me, रणे in fight, मानयेत् measure.

Meaning

'How can I have enduring war with the ogres today? How will my visit to this place end in happy return? Only in a combat this tenheaded Ravana will guage his strength and mine

SK-41-9Sundara Kanda 41.9

ततस्समासाद्य रणे दशाननं समन्त्रिवर्गं सबलप्रयायिनम्। हृदि स्थितं तस्य मतं बलं च वै सुखेन मत्त्वाऽहमितः पुनर्व्रजे।।5.41.9।।

tatassamāsādya raṇe daśānanṃ samantrivargṃ sabalaprayāyinam| hṛdi sthitṃ tasya matṃ balṃ ca vai sukhena mattvā'hamitḥ punarvraje||5.41.9||

Translation

ततः thereafter, समन्त्रिवर्गम् along with the ministers, सबलप्रयायिनम् and army chiefs marching forward, दशाननम् tenheaded Ravana, रणे in war, समासाद्य after finding out, तस्य his, हृदि in his mind, स्थितम् established, मतम् feeling, बलं च वै strength, मत्त्वा knowing, अहम् I, इतः from here, सुखेन happily, पुनः again, व्रजे can go.

Meaning

'I can return happily only after I gauge the tenheaded Ravana's army in war, his strength, his companions including the ministers and his mind.

SK-41-10Sundara Kanda 41.10

इदमस्य नृशंसस्य नन्दनोपममुत्तमम्। वनं नेत्रमनःकान्तं नानाद्रुमलतायुतम्।।5.41.10।।

idamasya nṛśṃsasya nandanopamamuttamam| vanṃ netramanḥkāntṃ nānādrumalatāyutam||5.41.10||

Translation

नृशंसस्य wicked Ravana's, अस्य his, इदम् this (Ashoka garden), नेत्रमनःकान्तम् feast to the eyes and mind, नानाद्रुमलतायुतम् filled with different kinds of trees and creepers, उत्तमम् excellent, वनम् garden, नन्दनोपमम् like the Nandana garden of Indra.

Meaning

'This Ashoka garden of Ravana filled with different kinds of trees and creepers is a feast to the eyes and mind. It is an excellent garden like the Nandana garden of Indra.

SK-41-11Sundara Kanda 41.11

इदं विध्वंसयिष्यामि शुष्कं वनमिवानलः। अस्मिन्भग्ने ततः कोपं करिष्यति दशाननः।।5.41.11।।

idṃ vidhvṃsayiṣyāmi śuṣkṃ vanamivānalḥ| asminbhagne tatḥ kopṃ kariṣyati daśānanḥ||5.41.11||

Translation

शुष्कम् dried up, वनम् forest, अनलः इव like fire, इदम् this, विध्वंसयिष्यामि will destroy, अस्मिन् when this, भग्ने devastate, ततः then, दशाननः Ravana, कोपम् anger, करिष्यति will exhibit.

Meaning

'I will devastate this garden, just as fire destroys a dried up forest. This will enrage Ravana.

SK-41-12Sundara Kanda 41.12

ततो महत्साश्वमहारथद्विपं बलं समादेक्ष्यति राक्षसाधिपः। त्रिशूलकालायसपट्टिसायुधं ततो महद्युद्धमिदं भविष्यति।।5.41.12।।

tato mahatsāśvamahārathadvipṃ balṃ samādekṣyati rākṣasādhipḥ| triśūlakālāyasapaṭṭisāyudhṃ tato mahadyuddhamidṃ bhaviṣyati||5.41.12||

Translation

ततः then, राक्षसाधिपः king of ogres, साश्वमहारथद्विपम् with horses, chariots and elephants, महत् great, त्रिशूलकालायसपट्टिसायुधम् armed with tridents, black iron spears, बलम् army, समादेक्ष्यति will order, ततः then, इदम् this, महत् great, युद्धम् war, भविष्यति will take place.

Meaning

'Then the demon king will order the horses, chariots and elephants and army equipped with tridents and spears to march against me. A great war will take place.

SK-41-13Sundara Kanda 41.13

अहं तु तैः संयति चण्डविक्रमै स्समेत्य रक्षोभिरसह्य विक्रमः। निहत्य तद्रावणचोदितं बलं सुखं गमिष्यामि कपीश्वरालयम्।।5.41.13।।

ahṃ tu taiḥ sṃyati caṇḍavikramai ssametya rakṣobhirasahya vikramḥ| nihatya tadrāvaṇacoditṃ balṃ sukhṃ gamiṣyāmi kapīśvarālayam||5.41.13||

Translation

अहं तु I on my part, चण्डविक्रमैः with those endowed with fierce strength, तैः with them, रक्षोभिः by demons, संयति in fight, समेत्य colliding, असह्यविक्रमः irresistible valour, रावणचोदितम् sent by Ravana, तत् that, बलम् army, निहत्य after destroying, सुखम् happily, कपीश्वरालयम् to the abode of vanaras, गमिष्यामि I will go.

Meaning

'I will fight with the ogres sent by Ravana, endowed with fierce strength and irresistible valour. After destroying their army I will go to the abode of vanaras happily'.

SK-41-14Sundara Kanda 41.14

ततो मारुतवत्कृद्धो मारुतिर्भीमविक्रमः। ऊरुवेगेन महता द्रुमान्क्षेप्तुमथारभत्।।5.41.14।।

tato mārutavatkṛddho mārutirbhīmavikramḥ| ūruvegena mahatā drumānkṣeptumathārabhat||5.41.14||

Translation

ततः then, भीमविक्रमः a vanara of fierce valour, मारुतिः Maruti, क्रुद्धः furious one, अथ and then, महता with great, ऊरुवेगेन with speed sprung from his thighs, मारुतवत् like the Windgod, द्रुमान् trees, क्षेप्तुम् to uproot, आरभत् started.

Meaning

Furious Maruti endowed with fierce valour started uprooting the trees with the speed sprung from his thighs like the Windgod.

SK-41-15Sundara Kanda 41.15

ततस्तु हनुमान्वीरो बभञ्ज प्रमदावनम्। मत्तद्विजसमाघुष्टं नानाद्रुमलतायुतम्।।5.41.15।।

tatastu hanumānvīro babhañja pramadāvanam| mattadvijasamāghuṣṭṃ nānādrumalatāyutam||5.41.15||

Translation

ततः then, वीरः hero, हनुमान् Hanuman, मत्तद्विजसमाघुष्टम् filled with intoxicated birds, नानाद्रुमलतायुतम् with variety of trees and vines, प्रमदावनम् garden grown for women folk, बभञ्ज felled.

Meaning

Then Hanuman felled a variety of trees and vines inhabited by intoxicated birds in the beautiful garden meant for womenfolk.

SK-41-16Sundara Kanda 41.16

तद्वनं मथितैर्वृक्षैर्भिन्नैश्च सलिलाशयैः। चूर्णितैः पर्वताग्रैश्च बभूवाप्रियदर्शनम्।।5.41.16।।

tadvanṃ mathitairvṛkṣairbhinnaiśca salilāśayaiḥ| cūrṇitaiḥ parvatāgraiśca babhūvāpriyadarśanam||5.41.16||

Translation

तत् वनम् that garden, मथितैः with destroyed, वृक्षैः trees, भिन्नैः with breached, सलिलाशयैः ponds, चूर्णितैः powdered, पर्वताग्रैश्च mountain peaks, अप्रियदर्शनम् unpleasant appearance, बभूव remained.

Meaning

That garden looked ugly with uprooted trees, breached ponds and powdered mountain peaks.

SK-41-17-18Sundara Kanda 41.17–18 (युग्मम्)

नानाशकुन्तविरुतैः प्रभिन्नैस्सलिलाशयैः। ताम्रैः किसलयैः क्लान्तै: क्लान्तद्रुमलतायुतम्।।5.41.17।। न बभौ तद्वनं तत्र दावानलहतं यथा। व्याकुलावरणा रेजुर्विह्वला इव ता लताः।।5.41.18।।

nānāśakuntavirutaiḥ prabhinnaissalilāśayaiḥ| tāmraiḥ kisalayaiḥ klāntai: klāntadrumalatāyutam||5.41.17|| na babhau tadvanṃ tatra dāvānalahatṃ yathā| vyākulāvaraṇā rejurvihvalā iva tā latāḥ||5.41.18||

Translation

कलान्तद्रुमलतायुतम् with wilted vines and trees, तत् वनम् that garden, नानाशकुन्तविरुतैः with birds shrieking with different kinds of sounds, प्रभिन्नैः with smashed, सलिलाशयैः with ponds of water, क्लान्तै: withered, ताम्रैः with red ones only, किसलयैः with tender shoots, दावानलहतंरणाः like burntin forest fire, ताः लताः those climbers, विह्वलाः इव like women with their robes disarrayed, रेजुः trembling in fear.

Meaning

Vines and trees wilted, birds shrieking, the embankments of ponds destroyed, its tender coppery red shoots withered, the garden looked as though it is burnt by forest fire and the climbers looked like women shivering in fear with their robes disarrayed.

SK-41-19Sundara Kanda 41.19

लतागृहैश्चित्रगृहैश्च नाशितैर्महोरगैर्व्यालमृगैश्च निर्धुतैः। शिलागृहैरुन्मथितैस्तथा गृहैः प्रणष्टरूपं तदभून्महद्वनम्।।5.41.19।।

latāgṛhaiścitragṛhaiśca nāśitairmahoragairvyālamṛgaiśca nirdhutaiḥ| śilāgṛhairunmathitaistathā gṛhaiḥ praṇaṣṭarūpṃ tadabhūnmahadvanam||5.41.19||

Translation

महत् great, तत् वनम् that garden, नाशितैः ruined, लतागृहैः arbours, चित्रगृहैः picture galleries, निर्धुतैः destroyed, महोरगैः huge serpents, व्यालमृगैश्च and even with wild animals, तथा in the same manner, उन्मथितैः scattered, शिलागृहैः stone houses, गृहैः with houses, प्रणष्टरूपम् disfigured, अभूत् became.

Meaning

The great garden lay disfigured, with the arbours and the picture galleries ruined, huge serpents and wild animals scattered, with stone houses and sheds destroyed.

SK-41-20Sundara Kanda 41.20

सा विह्वलाऽशोकलताप्रताना वनस्थली शोकलताप्रताना। जाता दशास्यप्रमदावनस्य कपेर्बलाद्धि प्रमदावनस्य।।5.41.20।।

sā vihvalā'śokalatāpratānā vanasthalī śokalatāpratānā| jātā daśāsyapramadāvanasya kaperbalāddhi pramadāvanasya||5.41.20||

Translation

दशास्यप्रमदावनस्य of that pleasure garden of the tenheaded Ravana, प्रमदावनस्य कपेः with the strength of the monkey who had set out to protect a lady (Sita), सा वनस्थली that garden, बलात् by force, विह्वला destroyed, शोकलताप्रताना was spreading out creepers of sorrow, जाता appeared.

Meaning

The pleasuregarden of Ravana appeared as though it was spreading the creepers of sorrow, since it was totally destroyed by the monkey who had set out to protect a woman. प्रमदावनस्य of the pleasure garden, प्रमदाअवनस्य of the hero who came to protect a lady.

SK-41-21Sundara Kanda 41.21

स तस्य कृत्वार्थपतेर्महाकपिर्महद्व्यलीकं मनसो महात्मनः। युयुत्सुरेको बहुभिर्महाबलैश्शिया ज्वलंस्तोरणमास्थितः कपिः।।5.41.21।।

sa tasya kṛtvārthapatermahākapirmahadvyalīkṃ manaso mahātmanḥ| yuyutsureko bahubhirmahābalaiśśiyā jvalṃstoraṇamāsthitḥ kapiḥ||5.41.21||

Translation

सः महाकपिः that great vanara, महात्मनः of the great self, तस्य his, अर्थपतेः of the lord of wealth, मनसः in mind, महत् great, व्यलीकम् unpleasantness, कृत्वा having caused, महाबलैः mighty, बहुभिः many, एकः singlehanded, युयुत्सुः ready to fight, श्रिया blazing, ज्वलन् glowing, तोरणम् exit doorway, आस्थितः stood.

Meaning

The great vanara having perpetrated mischief, rousing anger in the mind of the great lord of wealth, stood at the exit doorway ready to combat singlehanded with many warriors in that mighty army blazing in glory. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे एकचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fortyfirst sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
