BK-75-1Bala Kanda 75.1

राम दाशरथे राम वीर्यं ते श्रूयतेऽद्भुतम्। धनुषो भेदनं चैव निखिलेन मया श्रुतम्।।1.75.1।।

rāma dāśarathe rāma vīryṃ te śrūyate'dbhutam| dhanuṣo bhedanṃ caiva nikhilena mayā śrutam||1.75.1||

Translation

दाशरथे son of Dasaratha, राम O Rama, राम O Rama, ते your, वीर्यम् prowess, अद्भुतम् marvellous, श्रूयते is being heard, धनुष: bow's, भेदनं चैव breaking also, निखिलेन completely, मया by me, श्रुतम् heard.

Meaning

"O Rama, Rama, son of Dasaratha I have heard in full of your marvellous prowess and your feat in breaking the bow of Siva.

BK-75-2Bala Kanda 75.2

तदद्भुतमचिन्त्यं च भेदनं धनुषस्त्वया। तच्छ्रुत्वाऽहमनुप्राप्तो धनुर्गृह्यापरं शुभम्।।1.75.2।।

tadadbhutamacintyṃ ca bhedanṃ dhanuṣastvayā| tacchrutvā'hamanuprāpto dhanurgṛhyāparṃ śubham||1.75.2||

Translation

त्वया by you, धनुष: bow's, तत् भेदनम् that breaking, अद्भुतम् astonishing, अचिन्त्यम् च unimaginable, तत् that, श्रुत्वा having heard, अहम् I, अपरम् another, शुभम् auspicious, धनु: bow, गृह्य bringing, अनुप्राप्त: have come here.

Meaning

The fact that you have broken Siva's bow is an astonishing act. It is beyond imagination. Having heard it I have come here with another auspicious bow.

BK-75-3Bala Kanda 75.3

तदिदं घोरसङ्काशं जामदग्न्यं महद्धनु:। पूरयस्व शरेणैव स्वबलं दर्शयस्व च।।1.75.3।।

tadidṃ ghorasaṅkāśṃ jāmadagnyṃ mahaddhanu:| pūrayasva śareṇaiva svabalṃ darśayasva ca||1.75.3||

Translation

घोरसङ्काशं appearing dreadful, जामदग्न्यम् obtained through Jamadagni, तत् that, इदम् this, महत् mighty, धनु: bow, शरेणैव with arrow, पूरयस्व fill it, स्वबलम् your own prowess, दर्शयस्व show.

Meaning

This mighty, dreadful bow was obtained through Jamadagni. You may display your prowess by fixing on it an arrow.

BK-75-4Bala Kanda 75.4

तदहं ते बलं दृष्ट्वा धनुषोऽस्य प्रपूरणे। द्वन्द्वयुद्धं प्रदास्यामि वीर्यश्लाघ्यस्य राघव।।1.75.4।।

tadahṃ te balṃ dṛṣṭvā dhanuṣo'sya prapūraṇe| dvandvayuddhṃ pradāsyāmi vīryaślāghyasya rāghava||1.75.4||

Translation

राघव O Rama, तत् that, अहम् I, अस्य this, धनुष: bow's, प्रपूरणे in stretching it, ते your, बलम् strength, दृष्ट्वा having seen, वीर्यश्लाघ्यस्य to you acclaimed in prowess, द्वन्द्वयुद्धं a duel combat, प्रदास्यामि shall give.

Meaning

O Rama after witnessing your strength in stretching and stringing this bow, I shall engage you in a duel acclaiming your prowess".

BK-75-5Bala Kanda 75.5

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राजा दशरथस्तदा। विषण्णवदनो दीन: प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।1.75.5।।

tasya tadvacanṃ śrutvā rājā daśarathastadā| viṣaṇṇavadano dīna: prāñjalirvākyamabravīt||1.75.5||

Translation

तदा then, राजा king, दशरथ Dasaratha, तस्य his, तत् that, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा having heard, विषण्णवदन: with dejected face, दीन: full of sorrow, प्राञ्जलि: with joined hands, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

When king Dasaratha heard these words, his face fell. He humbly pleaded with him his hands folded:

BK-75-6Bala Kanda 75.6

क्षत्ररोषात्प्रशान्तस्त्वं ब्राह्मणश्च महायशा:। बालानां मम पुत्राणामभयं दातुमर्हसि।।1.75.6।।

kṣatraroṣātpraśāntastvṃ brāhmaṇaśca mahāyaśā:| bālānāṃ mama putrāṇāmabhayṃ dātumarhasi||1.75.6||

Translation

क्षत्ररोषात् from anger against kshatriyas, प्रशान्त: quietened, ब्राह्मण: brahmana, महायशा: highly renowned, बालानाम् of young boys, मम my, पुत्राणाम् sons, अभयम् assurance of security, दातुम् to give, अर्हसि behoves of you.

Meaning

"You are a brahmana, highly renowned and withdrawn from anger against kshatriyas. It behoves of you to give assurance of security to my sons who are young.

BK-75-7Bala Kanda 75.7

भार्गवाणां कुले जात: स्वाध्यायव्रतशालिनाम्। सहास्राक्षे प्रतिज्ञाय शस्त्रं निक्षिप्तवानसि।।1.75.7।।

bhārgavāṇāṃ kule jāta: svādhyāyavrataśālinām| sahāsrākṣe pratijñāya śastrṃ nikṣiptavānasi||1.75.7||

Translation

स्वाध्यायव्रतशालिनाम् resplendent with the study of vedas and observance of vows, भार्गवाणाम् relating to Bhargavas, कुले in the race of, जात: was born, सहास्राक्षे in the name of Indra, प्रतिज्ञाय having vowed, शस्त्रं arms, निक्षिप्तवान् असि have renounced.

Meaning

Born in the family of (saint) Bhrigu versed in the study of the Vedas and observance of vows. You have promised in the name of the thousandeyed Indra to renounce the arms.

BK-75-8Bala Kanda 75.8

स त्वं धर्मपरो भूत्वा काश्यपाय वसुन्धराम् । दत्त्वा वनमुपागम्य महेन्द्रकृतकेतन:।।1.75.8।।

sa tvṃ dharmaparo bhūtvā kāśyapāya vasundharām | dattvā vanamupāgamya mahendrakṛtaketana:||1.75.8||

Translation

स: such, त्वम् you, धर्मपर: one intent on righteousness, भूत्वा by being, काश्यपाय for Kasyapa, वसुन्धराम् this earth, दत्त्वा having given, वनम् forest, उपागम्य having reached, महेन्द्रकृतकेतन: made a residence on the Mahendra mountain.

Meaning

By adhering to righteousness in life and having conferred the earth upon Kasyapa, you retired to the forest and made your residence on the Mahendra mountain.

BK-75-9Bala Kanda 75.9

मम सर्वविनाशाय सम्प्राप्तस्त्वं महामुने। न चैकस्मिन् हते रामे सर्वे जीवामहे वयम् ।।1.75.9।।

mama sarvavināśāya samprāptastvṃ mahāmune| na caikasmin hate rāme sarve jīvāmahe vayam ||1.75.9||

Translation

महामुने O Great ascetic, त्वम् you, मम my, सर्वविनाशाय for total destruction, सम्प्राप्त: arrived, एकस्मिन् one, रामे Rama, हते if killed, वयम् us, सर्वे all, न जीवामहे will not survive.

Meaning

O Great ascetic today you have arrived evidently for the total destruction of our family. If Rama is killed none of us will survive".

BK-75-10Bala Kanda 75.10

ब्रुवत्येवं दशरथे जामदग्न्य: प्रतापवान्। अनादृत्यैव तद्वाक्यं राममेवाभ्यभाषत।।1.75.10।।

bruvatyevṃ daśarathe jāmadagnya: pratāpavān| anādṛtyaiva tadvākyṃ rāmamevābhyabhāṣata||1.75.10||

Translation

दशरथे when Dasaratha, एवम् in this way, ब्रुवति while saying, प्रतापवान् valiant, जामदग्न्य: son of Jamadagni, तद्वाक्यम् those words, अनादृत्यैव disregarding, राममेव Rama only, अभ्यभाषत addressed.

Meaning

Disregarding these words of Dasaratha, the valiant son of Jamadagni said to Rama.

BK-75-11Bala Kanda 75.11

इमे द्वे धनुषी श्रेष्ठे दिव्ये लोकाभिविश्रुते। दृढे बलवती मुख्ये सुकृते विश्वकर्मणा।।1.75.11।।

ime dve dhanuṣī śreṣṭhe divye lokābhiviśrute| dṛḍhe balavatī mukhye sukṛte viśvakarmaṇā||1.75.11||

Translation

इमे these, द्वे two, धनुषी bows, श्रेष्ठे excellent, दिव्ये celestial, लोकाभिविश्रुते wellknown in the worlds, दृढे stout, बलवती powerful, मुख्ये best of all, विश्वकर्मणा by Visvakarma, सुकृते are well made.

Meaning

"These two excellent celestial bows are wellknown throughout the worlds. They are stout and strong. They are the best of all, wellmade by Visvakarma.

BK-75-12Bala Kanda 75.12

अतिसृष्टं सुरैरेकं त्र्यम्बकाय युयुत्सवे। त्रिपुरघ्नं नरश्रेष्ठ भग्नं काकुत्स्थ यत्त्वया।।1.75.12।।

atisṛṣṭṃ surairekṃ tryambakāya yuyutsave| tripuraghnṃ naraśreṣṭha bhagnṃ kākutstha yattvayā||1.75.12||

Translation

नरश्रेष्ठ O Best among men, काकुत्स्थ Rama, यत् which, त्त्वया by you, भग्नं was broken, युयुत्सवे wishing to fight, त्र्यम्बकाय for threeeyed Siva, सुरै: by devatas, अतिसृष्टं was given, त्रिपुरघ्नम् destroyer of Tripuras, एकम् one (of the two).

Meaning

O Best among men O Descendant of Kakustha one of these broken by you, was given by the gods to the threeeyed Siva, who, wishing to fight the demon Tripura with this bow, destroyed him.

BK-75-13Bala Kanda 75.13

इदं द्वितीयं दुर्धर्षं विष्णोर्दत्तं सुरोत्तमै:। तदिदं वैष्णवं राम धनु: परमभास्वरम्। समानसारं काकुत्स्थ रौद्रेण धनुषा त्विदम्।।1.75.13।।

idṃ dvitīyṃ durdharṣṃ viṣṇordattṃ surottamai:| tadidṃ vaiṣṇavṃ rāma dhanu: paramabhāsvaram| samānasārṃ kākutstha raudreṇa dhanuṣā tvidam||1.75.13||

Translation

दुर्धर्षम् unassailable, इदम् this, द्वितीयम् second bow, सुरोत्तमै: chiefs of celestials, विष्णो: for Visnu, दत्तम् given, काकुत्स्थ born in the race of Kakutsthsa, राम Rama, परमभास्वरम् highly radiant, तत् that, इदम् this, वैष्णवम् pertaining to Visnu, धनु: bow, रौद्रेण धनुषा with the bow of Rudra, समानसारम् equal to its energy.

Meaning

This second bow which is unassailable was given by chief of the celestials to Visnu. O Rama born in the race of Kakutstha this highly radiant bow of Visnu is as strong as the bow of Siva.

BK-75-14Bala Kanda 75.14

तदा तु देवतास्सर्वा: पृच्छन्ति स्म पितामहम्। शितिकण्ठस्य विष्णोश्च बलाबलनिरीक्षया।।1.75.14।।

tadā tu devatāssarvā: pṛcchanti sma pitāmaham| śitikaṇṭhasya viṣṇośca balābalanirīkṣayā||1.75.14||

Translation

तदा then, सर्वा: all, देवता: devatas, शितिकण्ठस्य bluethroated, Siva's, विष्णो: Visnu's, बलाबलनिरीक्षया to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses, पितामहम् grandsire, Brahma, पृच्छन्ति स्म enquired.

Meaning

Then all the gods in order to ascertain the strength and weakness of Siva and Visnu enquired of the Grandsire, Brahma:

BK-75-15Bala Kanda 75.15

अभिप्रायं तु विज्ञाय देवतानां पितामह:। विरोधं जनयामास तयो स्सत्यवतां वर:।।1.75.15।।

abhiprāyṃ tu vijñāya devatānāṃ pitāmaha:| virodhṃ janayāmāsa tayo ssatyavatāṃ vara:||1.75.15||

Translation

सत्यवताम् among truth speaking ones, वर: foremost, पितामह: grandsire, Brahma, देवतानाम् devatas', अभिप्रायम् intention, विज्ञाय having come to know, तयो: for both of them, विरोधम् quarrel, जनयामास instigated.

Meaning

Foremost among the truthful, Grandsire Brahma come to know the intention of the gods and triggered a conflict between the gods.

BK-75-16Bala Kanda 75.16

विरोधे च महद्युद्धमभवद्रोमहर्षणम् । शितिकण्ठस्य विष्णोश्च परस्परजिगीषुणो:।।1.75.16।।

virodhe ca mahadyuddhamabhavadromaharṣaṇam | śitikaṇṭhasya viṣṇośca parasparajigīṣuṇo:||1.75.16||

Translation

विरोधे in that fight, परस्परजिगीषिणो: each desirous of victory over the other, शितिकण्ठस्य Siva's, विष्णोश्च Visnu's, रोमहर्षणम् causing one's hair to stand on its end, महत् great, युद्धम् battle, अभवत् took place.

Meaning

In that thrilling fight between Siva and Visnu, each desirous of victory over the other, a ferocious battle took place causing one's hair to stand on end.

BK-75-17Bala Kanda 75.17

तदा तु जृम्भितं शैवं धनुर्भीमपराक्रमम्। हुङ्कारेण महादेव स्तम्भितोऽथ त्रिलोचन:।।1.75.17।।

tadā tu jṛmbhitṃ śaivṃ dhanurbhīmaparākramam| huṅkāreṇa mahādeva stambhito'tha trilocana:||1.75.17||

Translation

तदा then, हुङ्कारेण with 'Humkara' by Visnu, भीमपराक्रमम् dreadful prowess, शैवं धनु: Siva's bow, जृम्भितं yawned (stretched), अथ thereafter, त्रिलोचन: threeeyed, महादेव: Mahadeva, स्तम्भित: was made motionless.

Meaning

Then, with the 'Humkara' produced by Visnu, Siva's bow of dreadful prowess was stretched, which struck the threeeyed Mahadeva motionless.

BK-75-18Bala Kanda 75.18

देवैस्तदा समागम्य सर्षिसघै स्सचारणै:। याचितौ प्रशमं तत्र जग्मतुस्तौ सुरोत्तमौ।।1.75.18।।

devaistadā samāgamya sarṣisaghai ssacāraṇai:| yācitau praśamṃ tatra jagmatustau surottamau||1.75.18||

Translation

तदा then, सर्षिसंघै: hosts of sages, सचारणै: with charanas, देवै: devatas, तत्र there, समागम्य having assembled, याचितौ beseeched, तौ those two, सुरोत्तमौ foremost of devatas, प्रशमम् peace, जग्मतु: obtained.

Meaning

Then hosts of sages, charanas and the gods assembled there and beseeched both of them, the preeminent among the gods to keep peace.

BK-75-19Bala Kanda 75.19

जृम्भितं तद्धनुर्द्रृष्ट्वा शैवं विष्णुपराक्रमै:। अधिकं मेनिरे विष्णुं देवा स्सर्षिगणास्तदा ।।1.75.19।।

jṛmbhitṃ taddhanurdrṛṣṭvā śaivṃ viṣṇuparākramai:| adhikṃ menire viṣṇuṃ devā ssarṣigaṇāstadā ||1.75.19||

Translation

विष्णुपराक्रमै: with the prowess of Visnu, जृम्भितम् made inert, तत् that, शैवम् relating to Siva, धनु: bow, दृष्ट्वा haivng seen, तदा then, सर्षिगणा: hosts of sages, देवा: devatas, विष्णुम् Visnu, अधिकम् as superior, मेनिरे thought over.

Meaning

Now that the bow of Siva was made inert by Visnu's prowess, hosts of sages and gods acknowlged Visnu as superior.

BK-75-20Bala Kanda 75.20

धनू रुद्रस्तु सङ्कृद्धो विदेहेषु महायशा:। देवरातस्य राजर्षेर्ददौ हस्ते ससायकम्।।1.75.20।।

dhanū rudrastu saṅkṛddho videheṣu mahāyaśā:| devarātasya rājarṣerdadau haste sasāyakam||1.75.20||

Translation

सङ्कृद्ध: enraged, महायशा: renowned, रुद्रस्तु Siva, विदेहेषु in the country of Videha, ससायकम् together with arrow, धनु: bow, राजर्षे: to the royal saint, देवरातस्य devarata's, हस्ते hands, ददौ gave.

Meaning

Glorious Siva, enraged at this, placed the bow together with the arrow in the hands of Rajarshi Devarata in the country of Videha.

BK-75-21Bala Kanda 75.21

इदं च वैष्णवं राम धनु: परपुरञ्जयम्। ऋचीके भार्गवे प्रादाद्विष्णु: स न्यासमुत्तमम्।।1.75.21।।

idṃ ca vaiṣṇavṃ rāma dhanu: parapurañjayam| ṛcīke bhārgave prādādviṣṇu: sa nyāsamuttamam||1.75.21||

Translation

राम O Rama, स: that, विष्णु: Visnu, परपुरञ्जयम् capable of conquering hostile cities, इदम् this, वैष्णवं धनु: bow of Visnu, भार्गवे belonging to Bhrigu race, ऋचीके named Richika, उत्तमम् the best, न्यासम् in trust, प्रादात् gave.

Meaning

This bow of Visnu, O Rama capable of conquering hostile cities, was given in trust to Richika belonging to the race of Bhrigu.

BK-75-22Bala Kanda 75.22

ऋचीकस्तु महातेजा: पुत्रस्याप्रतिकर्मण:। पितुर्मम ददौ दिव्यं जमदग्नेर्महात्मन:।।1.75.22।।

ṛcīkastu mahātejā: putrasyāpratikarmaṇa:| piturmama dadau divyṃ jamadagnermahātmana:||1.75.22||

Translation

महातेजा: exceedingly lustrous, ऋचीकस्तु Ruchika, पुत्रस्य to his son, अप्रतिकर्मण: of unrivalled valour, महात्मन: of the maganimous one, मम my, पितु: father, जमदग्ने: to Jamadagni, ददौ gave.

Meaning

Brilliant Ruchika gave this bow to his son, the great Jamadagni, my father, a man of unrivalled valour.

BK-75-23Bala Kanda 75.23

न्यस्तशस्त्रे पितरि मे तपोबलसमन्विते। अर्जुनो विदधे मृत्युं प्राकृतां बुद्धिमास्थित:।।1.75.23।।

nyastaśastre pitari me tapobalasamanvite| arjuno vidadhe mṛtyuṃ prākṛtāṃ buddhimāsthita:||1.75.23||

Translation

तपोबलसमन्विते endowed with ascetic energy, मे my, पितरि when my father, न्यस्तशस्त्रे renounced the weapons, अर्जुन: Karta Virya Arjuna, प्राकृताम् in a vulgar manner, मृत्युम् death, बुद्धिम् mind, आस्थितः resorting to, विदधे made.

Meaning

My father equipped with ascetic energy renounced the weapon and was killed by Kartaveeryarjuna in a vulgar manner.

BK-75-24-25Bala Kanda 75.24–25 (युग्मम्)

वधमप्रतिरूपं तु पितु श्शृत्वा सुदारुणम्। क्षत्रमुत्सादयन्रोषाज्जातं जातमनेकश:।।1.75.24।। पृथिवीं चाखिलां प्राप्य काश्यपाय महात्मने । यज्ञस्यान्ते तदा राम दक्षिणां पुण्यकर्मणे । दत्त्वा महेन्द्रनिलयस्तपोबलसमन्वित:।।1.75.25।।

vadhamapratirūpṃ tu pitu śśṛtvā sudāruṇam| kṣatramutsādayanroṣājjātṃ jātamanekaśa:||1.75.24|| pṛthivīṃ cākhilāṃ prāpya kāśyapāya mahātmane | yajñasyānte tadā rāma dakṣiṇāṃ puṇyakarmaṇe | dattvā mahendranilayastapobalasamanvita:||1.75.25||

Translation

राम O Rama, अप्रतिरूपम् incomparable, सुदारुणम् extremely ruthless, पितु: father's, वधम् slaying, श्रुत्वा having heard, रोषात् out of fury, जातं जातम् born again and again, क्षत्रम् kshatriya race, उत्सादयन् decimating, अखिलाम् entire, पृथिवीम् earth, प्राप्य having won, यज्ञस्य sacrifice's, अन्ते at the end of, महात्मने to the magnanimous, पुण्यकर्मणे doer of meritorious acts, काश्यपाय for Kasyapa, दत्त्वा having given, तपोबलसमन्वित: endowed with ascetic energy, महेन्द्रनिलय: living on Mahendra mountain as my abode.

Meaning

O Rama Having heard the slaying of my father incomparable in extreme ruthlessness, I decimated the Kshatriya race again and again out of fury as they were born and reborn. I conquered the entire earth. At the conclusion of the sacrifice I conferred it on the great soul Kasyapa of meritorious acts. Gifted with ascetic energy I have (now) made the Mahendra mountain my abode.

BK-75-26Bala Kanda 75.26

अद्यतूत्तमवीर्येण त्वया राम महाबल। श्रुतवान् धनुषो भेदं ततोऽहं द्रुतमागत:।।1.75.26।।

adyatūttamavīryeṇa tvayā rāma mahābala| śrutavān dhanuṣo bhedṃ tato'hṃ drutamāgata:||1.75.26||

Translation

महाबल O Highly energetic, राम O Rama, अद्य now, उत्तमवीर्येण with excellent prowess, त्वया by you, धनुष: भेदम् breaking of the bow, श्रुतवान् having listened, अहम् I, तत: for that reason, द्रुतम् speedily, आगत: have come.

Meaning

O Mighty Rama when I heard that you have broken the bow with your extraordinary prowess, I have come here quickly.

BK-75-27Bala Kanda 75.27

तदिदं वैष्णवं राम पितृपैतामहं महत्। क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य गृह्णीष्व धनुरुत्तमम्।।1.75.27।।

tadidṃ vaiṣṇavṃ rāma pitṛpaitāmahṃ mahat| kṣatradharmṃ puraskṛtya gṛhṇīṣva dhanuruttamam||1.75.27||

Translation

राम O Rama, क्षत्रधर्मम् duties of kshatriya, पुरस्कृत्य treating with respect, तत् that, इदम् this, पितृपैतामहम् being inherited from my father and forefathers, महत् eminent, उत्तमम् excellent, वैष्णवम् related to Visnu, धनु: bow, गृह्णीष्व take hold of.

Meaning

Respect the duties of a kshatriya, O Rama Take hold of this great, uncommon bow of Visnu inherited by me from my father and forefathers.

BK-75-28Bala Kanda 75.28

योजयस्व धनुश्श्रेष्ठे शरं परपुरञ्जयम्। यदि शक्नोषि काकुत्स्थ द्वन्द्वं दास्यामि ते तत:।।1.75.28।।

yojayasva dhanuśśreṣṭhe śarṃ parapurañjayam| yadi śaknoṣi kākutstha dvandvṃ dāsyāmi te tata:||1.75.28||

Translation

काकुत्स्थ O Descendant of Kakutstha, धनु: श्रेष्ठे in this excellent bow, परपुरञ्जयम् capable of conquering cities of enemies, शरम् arrow, योजयस्व unite it, शक्नोषि यदि if it is possible for you to do so, तत: then, ते to you, द्वन्दम् duel combat, दास्यामि shall offer.

Meaning

O Descendant of Kakustha this best bow is capable of conquering enemy cities. Fix an arrow. If it is possible for you to do so, then I shall engage you in a duel". इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे पञ्चसप्ततितमस्सर्ग: ।। Thus ends the seventyfifth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
