BK-51-1-2Bala Kanda 51.1–2 (युग्मम्)

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा विश्वामित्रस्य धीमत:। हृष्टरोमा महातेजाश्शतानन्दो महातपा:।।1.51.1।। गौतमस्य सुतो ज्येष्ठस्तपसा द्योतितप्रभ:। रामसन्दर्शनादेव परं विस्मयमागत:।।1.51.2।।

tasya tadvacanṃ śrutvā viśvāmitrasya dhīmata:| hṛṣṭaromā mahātejāśśatānando mahātapā:||1.51.1|| gautamasya suto jyeṣṭhastapasā dyotitaprabha:| rāmasandarśanādeva parṃ vismayamāgata:||1.51.2||

Translation

धीमत: intellectual, तस्य विश्वामित्रस्य this Visvamitra's, तत् वचनम् that word, श्रुत्वा having heard, महातेजा: possessing great splendour, महातपा: great austerities, गौतमस्य Gautama's, ज्येष्ठ: eldest, सुत: son, तपसा with ascetism, द्योतितप्रभ: effulgent, शतानन्द: Satananda, हृष्टरोमा: thrilled, रामसन्दर्शनादेव on beholding Rama, परम् great, विस्मयम् astonishment, आगत: obtained.

Meaning

Satananda the eldest son of Gautama, a great sage who looked brilliant with the power of austerities was thrilled to hear the words of Viswamitra the intellectual and experienced great astonishment on beholding Rama.

BK-51-3Bala Kanda 51.3

स तौ निषण्णौ सम्प्रेक्ष्य सुखासीनौ नृपात्मजौ। शतानन्दो मुनिश्रेष्ठं विश्वामित्रमथामब्रवीत्।।1.51.3।।

sa tau niṣaṇṇau samprekṣya sukhāsīnau nṛpātmajau| śatānando muniśreṣṭhṃ viśvāmitramathāmabravīt||1.51.3||

Translation

अथ afterwards, स: शतानन्द: Satananda, निषण्णौ sitting nearby, सुखासीनौ comfortably seated, तौ नृपात्मजौ the two princes, सम्प्रेक्ष्य having seen, मुनिश्रेष्ठम् foremost of ascetics, विश्वामित्रम् addressing Visvamitra, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Satananda saw the two princes comfortably seated nearby and said to Viswamitra, the foremost of the ascetics:

अपि ते मुनिशार्दूल मम माता यशस्विनी। दर्शिता राजपुत्राय तपो दीर्घमुपागता।।1.51.4।।

api te muniśārdūla mama mātā yaśasvinī| darśitā rājaputrāya tapo dīrghamupāgatā||1.51.4||

Translation

मुनिशार्दूल O Tiger (great) among ascetics, दीर्घम् for long period, तप: austerities, उपागता having acquired, यशस्विनी renowned, मम my, माता mother, ते by you, राजपुत्राय to the prince, अपि दर्शिता has been show?

Meaning

"O Tiger among ascetics, was my renowned mother who had been practising intense austerities for long shown to the prince (Rama)?

BK-51-5Bala Kanda 51.5

अपि रामे महातेजा मम माता यशस्विनी। वन्यैरुपाहरत्पूजां पूजार्हे सर्वदेहिनाम्।।1.51.5।।

api rāme mahātejā mama mātā yaśasvinī| vanyairupāharatpūjāṃ pūjārhe sarvadehinām||1.51.5||

Translation

महातेजा: highly lustrous, यशस्विनी celebrated, मम माता my mother, सर्वदेहिनाम् for all living beings, पूजार्हे worthy of reverence, रामे to Rama, वन्यै: with things available in forest, पूजाम् homage, अपि उपाहरत् did she offer?

Meaning

Did my highly lustrous and celebrated mother offer homage to Rama, worthy of reverence by all living beings, with things available in the forest?

BK-51-6Bala Kanda 51.6

अपि रामाय कथितं यथावृत्तं पुरातनम्। मम मातुर्महातेजो दैवेन दुरनुष्ठितम्।।1.51.6।।

api rāmāya kathitṃ yathāvṛttṃ purātanam| mama māturmahātejo daivena duranuṣṭhitam||1.51.6||

Translation

महातेज: O Highly powerful one, मम to my, मातु: mother, दैवेन by god, दुरनुष्ठितम् badly done, पुरातनम् formerly, यथावृत्तम् as happened, रामाय to Rama, अपि कथितम् was told?

Meaning

O highly powerful sage, was Rama told the old story about the misdeed of god (Indra) to my mother?

BK-51-7Bala Kanda 51.7

अपि कौशिक भद्रं ते गुरुणा मम सङ्गता। मम माता मुनिश्रेष्ठ रामसन्दर्शनादित:।।1.51.7।।

api kauśika bhadrṃ te guruṇā mama saṅgatā| mama mātā muniśreṣṭha rāmasandarśanādita:||1.51.7||

Translation

कौशिक O Visvamitra, ते भद्रम् prosperity to you, मुनिश्रेष्ठ O best among ascetics, मम माता my mother, रामसन्दर्शनात् इत: in consequence of beholding Rama here, मम my, गुरुणा with father, अपि सङ्गता has been united?

Meaning

O Son of Kushika (Viswamitra) be blessed. O the best among the ascetics, as a result of beholding Rama, was my mother united with my father?

BK-51-8Bala Kanda 51.8

अपि मे गुरुणा राम: पूजित: कुशिकात्मज। इहागतो महातेजा: पूजां प्राप्तो महात्मन:।।1.51.8।।

api me guruṇā rāma: pūjita: kuśikātmaja| ihāgato mahātejā: pūjāṃ prāpto mahātmana:||1.51.8||

Translation

कुशिकात्मज O Son of Kusika, राम: Rama, गुरुणा by my father, अपि पूजित: was honoured, इह here, आगत: having arrived, महातेजा: most brilliant, महात्मन: of the illustrious (Rama), पूजाम् honours, अपि प्राप्त: has obtained.

Meaning

O Son of Kushika was Rama honoured by my father? Was my most brilliant father honoured by illustrious Rama when he arrived?

BK-51-9Bala Kanda 51.9

अपि शान्तेन मनसा गुरुर्मे कुशिकात्मज । इहाऽगतेन रामेण प्रयतेनाभिवादित:।।1.51.9।।

api śāntena manasā gururme kuśikātmaja | ihā'gatena rāmeṇa prayatenābhivādita:||1.51.9||

Translation

कुशिकात्मज O Kusika's son, इह here, आगतेन came, प्रयतेन piously disposed, रामेण by Rama, मे गुरु: my father, शान्तेन with tranquil, मनसा mind, अपि अभिवादित: saluted respectfully?

Meaning

O Kushika's son did pious Rama welcome my father with a tranquil mind when he arrived?"

BK-51-10Bala Kanda 51.10

तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य विश्वामित्रो महामुनि:। प्रत्युवाच शतानन्दं वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यकोविदम्।।1.51.10।।

tacchrutvā vacanṃ tasya viśvāmitro mahāmuni:| pratyuvāca śatānandṃ vākyajño vākyakovidam||1.51.10||

Translation

महामुनि: great sage, विश्वामित्र: Viswamitra, तत् वचनम् that word, श्रुत्वा having heard, वाक्यज्ञ: knowledgeable in words, वाक्यकोविदम् proficient in words, शतानन्दम् addressing Satananda, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Meaning

Great sage Viswamitra equipped with the knowledge of words heard Satananda who was proficient in speech. And replied:

नातिक्रान्तं मुनिश्रेष्ठ यत्कर्तव्यं कृतं मया। सङ्गता मुनिना पत्नी भार्गवेणेव रेणुका।।1.51.11।।

nātikrāntṃ muniśreṣṭha yatkartavyṃ kṛtṃ mayā| saṅgatā muninā patnī bhārgaveṇeva reṇukā||1.51.11||

Translation

मुनिश्रेष्ठ O Best of ascetics, न अतिक्रान्तम् (nothing) was omitted, मया by me, यत् which, कर्तव्यम् required to be done, कृतम् has been done, रेणुका Renuka, भार्गवेण इव like with Bhrugu's son, Jamadagni, पत्नी wife Ahalya, मुनिना with the sage, Gautama, सङ्गता was united.

Meaning

O Best of ascetics (Satananda) All that is required to be done has been done and nothing was omitted. Ahalya was united with sage Gautama like Renuka with Jamadagni.

BK-51-12Bala Kanda 51.12

तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य विश्वामित्रस्य भाषितम् । शतानन्दो महातेजा रामं वचनमब्रवीत्।।1.51.12।।

tacchrutvā vacanṃ tasya viśvāmitrasya bhāṣitam | śatānando mahātejā rāmṃ vacanamabravīt||1.51.12||

Translation

तस्य विश्वामित्रस्य Visvamitra's, भाषितम् having been spoken, तत् वचनम् that word, श्रुत्वा having listened, महातेजा: highly splendrous, शतानन्द: Satananda, रामम् addressing Rama, वचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Having heard Viswamitra the highly brilliant Satananda said to Rama:

BK-51-13Bala Kanda 51.13

स्वागतं ते नरश्रेष्ठ दिष्ट्या प्राप्तोऽसि राघव। विश्वामित्रं पुरस्कृत्य महर्षिमपराजितम्।।1.51.13।।

svāgatṃ te naraśreṣṭha diṣṭyā prāpto'si rāghava| viśvāmitrṃ puraskṛtya maharṣimaparājitam||1.51.13||

Translation

नरश्रेष्ठ O Chief of men, राघव Rama, अपराजितम् invincible, महर्षिम् maharshi, विश्वामित्रम् Viswamitra, पुरस्कृत्य keeping him in front, दिष्ट्या fortunately, प्राप्त: असि you have come, ते स्वागतम् welcome to you.

Meaning

"O Best of men O Son of the Raghus you are fortunate to have come here following the invincible maharshi Viswamitra. Welcome to you.

BK-51-14Bala Kanda 51.14

अचिन्त्यकर्मा तपसा ब्रह्मर्षिरतुलप्रभ:। विश्वामित्रो महातेजा वेत्स्येनं परमां गतिम्।।1.51.14।।

acintyakarmā tapasā brahmarṣiratulaprabha:| viśvāmitro mahātejā vetsyenṃ paramāṃ gatim||1.51.14||

Translation

महातेजा: possessing high lustre, विश्वामित्र: Viswamitra, अचिन्त्यकर्मा performed deeds defying imagination, तपसा by his austerities, ब्रह्मर्षि: Brahmarshi, अतुलप्रभ: possessing unsurpassed radiance, एनम् him, परमाम् supreme, गतिम् resort, वेत्सि you knew.

Meaning

Highly lustrous Viswamitra has performed deeds which defy all imagination. By his austerities, he became Brahmarshi and possesses unparalleled radiance. Know him to be the supreme resort.

BK-51-15Bala Kanda 51.15

नास्ति धन्यतरो राम त्वत्तोऽन्यो भुवि कश्चन। गोप्ता कुशिकपुत्रस्ते येन तप्तं महत्तप:।।1.51.15।।

nāsti dhanyataro rāma tvatto'nyo bhuvi kaścana| goptā kuśikaputraste yena taptṃ mahattapa:||1.51.15||

Translation

राम Rama, भुवि on this earth, त्वत्त: more than you, धन्यतर: more fortunate, अन्य: other, कश्चन none, नास्ति does not exist, येन by whom, महत् great, तप: austerities, तप्तम् having been performed, कुशिक पुत्र: son of Kusika, ते to you, गोप्ता protector.

Meaning

Rama Son of Kushika (Viswamitra) who has performed great austerities is your protector. Therefore, there is none on this earth more fortunate than you.

BK-51-16Bala Kanda 51.16

श्रूयतां चाभिधास्यामि कौशिकस्य महात्मन:। यथा बलं यथा वृत्तं तन्मे निगदत: श्रुणु।।1.51.16।।

śrūyatāṃ cābhidhāsyāmi kauśikasya mahātmana:| yathā balṃ yathā vṛttṃ tanme nigadata: śruṇu||1.51.16||

Translation

महात्मन: magnanimous, कौशिकस्य Visvamitra's, बलम् power, यथा as to how, वृत्तम् history, यथा as to how, अभिधास्यामि I shall tell, तत् that, निगदत: being described, मे from me, शृणु listen.

Meaning

I shall tell you about the power and achievement of the magnanimous son of Kushika Viswamitra. Listen

BK-51-17Bala Kanda 51.17

राजाऽभूदेष धर्मात्मा दीर्घकालमरिन्दम:। धर्मज्ञ: कृतविद्यश्च प्रजानां च हिते रत:।।1.51.17।।

rājā'bhūdeṣa dharmātmā dīrghakālamarindama:| dharmajña: kṛtavidyaśca prajānāṃ ca hite rata:||1.51.17||

Translation

एष: this Viswamitra, धर्मात्मा righteous minded, अरिन्दम: subduer of enemies, धर्मज्ञ: knower of righteousness, कृतविद्य: acquired knowledge in all branches of learning, प्रजानां of the subjects, हिते welfare, रत: delighted, राजा as king, दीर्घकालम् अभूत् ruled for long time.

Meaning

This righteousminded sage, subduer of enemies, knower of dharma knowledgeable in all branches of learning, devoted to the welfare of his subjects ruled as a king for long.

BK-51-18Bala Kanda 51.18

प्रजापतिसुतश्चासीत्कुशो नाम महीपति:। कुशस्य पुत्रो बलवान् कुशनाभस्सुधार्मिक:।।1.51.18।।

prajāpatisutaścāsītkuśo nāma mahīpati:| kuśasya putro balavān kuśanābhassudhārmika:||1.51.18||

Translation

प्रजापतिसुत: son of Prajapati, कुशो नाम named Kusa, महीपति: आसीत् there was a king, बलवान् strong, सुधार्मिक: supremely righteous, कुशनाभ: Kusanabha, कुशस्य पुत्र: son of Kusa.

Meaning

There was a king named Kusa who was the son of Brahma. His son was Kusanabha who was supremely righteous and strong.

BK-51-19Bala Kanda 51.19

कुशनाभसुतस्त्वासीद्गाधिरित्येव विश्रृत:। गाधे: पुत्रो महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनि:।।1.51.19।।

kuśanābhasutastvāsīdgādhirityeva viśrṛta:| gādhe: putro mahātejā viśvāmitro mahāmuni:||1.51.19||

Translation

गाधि: इत्येव known as Gadhi, विश्रृत: wellknown, कुशनाभसुत: आसीत् was the son of Kusnabha, महातेजा: highly lustrous, महामुनि: mighty ascetic, विश्वामित्र: Visvamitra, गाधे: Gadhi's, पुत्र: son.

Meaning

Wellknown Gadhi was the son of Kusanabha. Highly lustrous and mighty ascetic Viswamitra is the son of Gadhi.

BK-51-20Bala Kanda 51.20

विश्वामित्रो महातेजा: पालयामास मेदिनीम्। बहुवर्षसहस्राणि राजा राज्यमकारयत्।।1.51.20।।

viśvāmitro mahātejā: pālayāmāsa medinīm| bahuvarṣasahasrāṇi rājā rājyamakārayat||1.51.20||

Translation

महातेजा: highly lustrous, विश्वामित्र: Visvamitra, मेदिनीम् the earth, पालयामास ruled, राजा this king, बहुवर्षसहस्राणि for many thousands of years, राज्यम् kingdom, अकारयत् ruled.

Meaning

Highly lustrous Viswamitra ruled the earth. As a king he ruled over his kingdom for thousands of years.

BK-51-21Bala Kanda 51.21

कदाचित्तु महातेजा योजयित्वा वरूथिनीम्। अक्षौहीणीपरिवृत: परिचक्राम मेदिनीम्।।1.51.21।।

kadācittu mahātejā yojayitvā varūthinīm| akṣauhīṇīparivṛta: paricakrāma medinīm||1.51.21||

Translation

महातेजा: highly lustrous that Visvamitra, कदाचित् once, वरूथिनीम् his army, योजयित्वा having assembled, अक्षौहीणीपरिवृत: surrounded by army of the magnitude of Akshauhini, मेदिनीम् the earth, परिचक्राम gone round.

Meaning

Once that highly lustrous Viswamitra having assembled his army of the magnitude of akshauhini went round the earth.

BK-51-22-27Bala Kanda 51.22–27 (कुलकम्)

नगराणि सराष्ट्राणि सरितश्च तथा गिरीन्। आश्रमान्क्रमशो राम विचरन्नाजगाम ह।।1.51.22।। वसिष्ठस्याश्रमपदं नानावृक्षसमाकुलम्। नानामृगगणाकीर्णं सिद्धचारणसेवितम्।।1.51.23।। देवदानवगन्धर्वै: किन्नरैरुपशोभितम्। प्रशान्तहरिणाकीर्णं द्विजसङ्घनिषेवितम्।।1.51.24।। ब्रह्मर्षिगणसङ्कीर्णं देवर्षिगणसेवितम्। तपश्चरणसंसिद्धैरग्निकल्पैर्महात्मभि:।।1.51.25।। अब्भक्षैर्वायुभक्षैश्च शीर्णपर्णाशनैस्तथा। फलमूलाशनैर्दान्तैर्जितरोषैर्जितेन्द्रियै:।।1.51.26।। ऋषिभिर्वालखिल्यैश्च जपहोमपरायणै:। अन्यैर्वैखानसैश्चैव समन्तादुपशोभितम्।।1.51.27।।

nagarāṇi sarāṣṭrāṇi saritaśca tathā girīn| āśramānkramaśo rāma vicarannājagāma ha||1.51.22|| vasiṣṭhasyāśramapadṃ nānāvṛkṣasamākulam| nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇṃ siddhacāraṇasevitam||1.51.23|| devadānavagandharvai: kinnarairupaśobhitam| praśāntahariṇākīrṇṃ dvijasaṅghaniṣevitam||1.51.24|| brahmarṣigaṇasaṅkīrṇṃ devarṣigaṇasevitam| tapaścaraṇasṃsiddhairagnikalpairmahātmabhi:||1.51.25|| abbhakṣairvāyubhakṣaiśca śīrṇaparṇāśanaistathā| phalamūlāśanairdāntairjitaroṣairjitendriyai:||1.51.26|| ṛṣibhirvālakhilyaiśca japahomaparāyaṇai:| anyairvaikhānasaiścaiva samantādupaśobhitam||1.51.27||

Translation

राम Rama, सराष्ट्राणि together with kingdoms, नगराणि cities, सरित: rivers, तथा and, गिरीन् mountains, आश्रमान् hermitages, क्रमश: regularly, विचरन् while wandering, नानावृक्षसमाकुलम् crowded with various kinds of trees, नानामृगगणाकीर्णम् filled with various species of animals, सिद्धचारणसेवितम् attended by siddhas and charanas, देवदानवगन्धर्वै: devatas, danavas, gandharvas, किन्नरै: kinnaras, उपशोभितम् shining, प्रशान्तहरिणाकीर्णम् scattered with serene deers, द्विजसङ्घनिषेवितम् inhabited by multitude of birds, ब्रह्मर्षिगणसङ्कीर्णम् intermingled with hosts of brahmarshis, देवर्षिगणसेवितम् attended by hosts of devarishis, तपश्चरणसंसिद्धै: by those who attained perfection through their austerities, अग्निकल्पै: by those resembling fire in brightness, महात्मभि: by the magananimous, अब्भक्षै: by those subsisting on water only, वायुभक्षैश्च by those subsisting on air, तथा and, शीर्णपर्णाशनै: by those living on fallen leaves as their food, फलमूलाशनै: by those living on fruits and roots as their food, दान्तै: by the selfrestrained, जितरोषै: by those who have conquered anger, जितेन्द्रियै: by those who controlled senses, ऋषिभि: by sages, जपहोमपरायणै: by those who were devoted to prayers and offerings of libations, वालखिल्यै: with Valakhilyas (sages born from Brahma and have the size of thumb), अन्यै: by others, वैखानसैश्चैव by Vaikhanasa (born from the nails of Brahma), समन्तात् every where, उपशोभितम् shining with brightness, वसिष्ठस्य Vasishta's, आश्रमपदम् hermitage, अजगाम reached.

Meaning

Rama while Viswamitra was wandering about kingdoms, cities, rivers, mountains and hermitages, he gradually reached the ashram of Vasishta. That hermitage afounded in a variety of trees, species of animals, siddhas, charanas, devatas, danavas, gandharvas and kinnaras, multitudes of birds and resting deer. It was inhabited by brahmarshis and devarishis, by sages who had attained perfection through austerities, by those resembling fire in brightness, by the magnanimous and the selfrestrained, by those who had conquered anger and controlled their senses, who was devoted to prayers and offerings of libations. Some of them subsisted on water, some on air. Some lived on fallen leaves, some on fruits and roots. The hermitage looked bedecked with valakhilyas (born from Vala of Brahma ) and vaikhanasas (born from the nails of Brahma).

BK-51-28Bala Kanda 51.28

वसिष्ठस्याश्रमपदं ब्रह्मलोकमिवापरम्। ददर्श जयतां श्रेष्ठो विश्वामित्रो महाबल:।।1.51.28।।

vasiṣṭhasyāśramapadṃ brahmalokamivāparam| dadarśa jayatāṃ śreṣṭho viśvāmitro mahābala:||1.51.28||

Translation

जयताम् of the conquerors, श्रेष्ठ: foremost, महाबल: highly powerful, विश्वामित्र: Visvamitra, अपरम् a second, ब्रह्मलोकमिव like Brahmaloka, वसिष्ठस्य sage Vasishta's, आश्रमपदम् hermitage, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Highly powerful Viswamitra, foremost among the conquerors, (thus) saw the hermitage of Vasishta which looked like another Brahmaloka. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे एकपञ्चाशस्सर्ग:। Thus ends the fiftyfirst sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
