BK-49-1Bala Kanda 49.1

अफलस्तु ततश्शक्रो देवानग्निपुरोगमान्। अब्रवीत्त्रस्तवदनस्सर्षिस्सङ्घान् सचारणान्।।1.49.1।।

aphalastu tataśśakro devānagnipurogamān| abravīttrastavadanassarṣissaṅghān sacāraṇān||1.49.1||

Translation

तत: thereafter, अफल: having been deprived of his testacles, शक्र: Indra, त्रस्तवदन: with freightened face, सर्षिस्सङ्घान् with groups of rishis, सचारणान् with charanas, अग्निपुरोगमान् with Agni in the forefront, देवान् addressing devatas, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Deprived of testicles, Indra with a frightened face addressed hordes of rishis and charanas with agni in the forefront.

BK-49-2Bala Kanda 49.2

कुर्वता तपसो विघ्नं गौतमस्य महात्मन:। क्रोधमुत्पाद्य हि मया सुरकार्यमिदं कृतम्।।1.49.2।।

kurvatā tapaso vighnṃ gautamasya mahātmana:| krodhamutpādya hi mayā surakāryamidṃ kṛtam||1.49.2||

Translation

महात्मन: magnanimous, गौतमस्य Gautama's, क्रोधम् wrath, उत्पाद्य evoking, तपस: austerities, विघ्नम् obstacles, कुर्वता while creating, मया by me, इदम् this, सुरकार्यम् the work of celestials, कृतम् has been done.

Meaning

'I have accomplished the objective of the devatas by creating obstacles to Gautama's austerities, evoking in consequence the wrath of the magnanimous sage'.

BK-49-3Bala Kanda 49.3

अफलोऽस्मि कृतस्तेन क्रोधात्सा च निराकृता। शापमोक्षेण महता तपोऽस्यापहृतं मया।।1.49.3।।

aphalo'smi kṛtastena krodhātsā ca nirākṛtā| śāpamokṣeṇa mahatā tapo'syāpahṛtṃ mayā||1.49.3||

Translation

तेन by his, क्रोधात् wrath, अफल: deprived of testacles, कृत: अस्मि I been made, सा च also she, निराकृता was rejected, महता great, शापमोक्षेण by conferring curse, अस्य his, तप: ascetic energy, मया by me, अपहृतम् has been stolen.

Meaning

'By his (Gautama's) wrath I have been deprived of my testicles. She (Ahalya) has been deserted by him. He has lost his ascetic energy through the pronouncement of this great curse'.

BK-49-4Bala Kanda 49.4

तस्मात्सुरवरास्सर्वे सर्षिस्सङ्घास्सचारणा: । सुरसाह्यकरं सर्वे सफलं कर्तुमर्हथ।।1.49.4।।

tasmātsuravarāssarve sarṣissaṅghāssacāraṇā: | surasāhyakarṃ sarve saphalṃ kartumarhatha||1.49.4||

Translation

तस्मात् for that reason, सर्षिसङ्घा: with hosts of rishis, सचारणा: with charanas, सर्वे all, सुरवरा: excellent devatas, सुरसाह्यकरम् for the benefit of devatas, सफलम् restoration of my testicles, कर्तुम् to do, अर्हथ it is your duty.

Meaning

'For that reason, O rishis, charanas and great devatas it is your duty to restore my testicles for the benefit I have given you'.

BK-49-5Bala Kanda 49.5

शतक्रतोर्वचश्श्रुत्वा देवास्साग्निपुरोगमा:। पितृदेवानुपेत्याहु स्सह सर्वैर्मरुद्गणै:।।1.49.5।।

śatakratorvacaśśrutvā devāssāgnipurogamā:| pitṛdevānupetyāhu ssaha sarvairmarudgaṇai:||1.49.5||

Translation

साग्निपुरोगमा: with Agni in the forefront, देवा: devtas, शतक्रतो: Indra's (performer of one hundred sacrifices), वच: words, श्रुत्वा having heard, सर्वे all, मरुद्गणै: सह accompanied by hosts of maruts, पितृदेवान् pitrudevatas, उपेत्य having approached, आहु: said.

Meaning

'Hearing Indra, all the devatas accompanied by maruts. Lead by the Firegod devatas approached and said':

BK-49-6Bala Kanda 49.6

अयं मेषस्सवृषणश्शक्रो ह्यवृषण: कृत:। मेषस्य वृषणौ गृह्य शक्रायाऽशु प्रयच्छथ।।1.49.6।।

ayṃ meṣassavṛṣaṇaśśakro hyavṛṣaṇa: kṛta:| meṣasya vṛṣaṇau gṛhya śakrāyā'śu prayacchatha||1.49.6||

Translation

अयम् this, मेष: the ram, सवृषण: has testicles, शक्र: Indra, अवृषण: is without testicles, कृत: हि has been rendered, मेषस्य ram's, वृषणौ testicles, गृह्य taking, आशु immediately, शक्राय for Indra, प्रयच्छथ furnish.

Meaning

'This ram (which has received the share of your sacrificial offerings) has testicles. As Indra has been deprived of his own take these testicles immediately and graft them on to Indra'.

BK-49-7Bala Kanda 49.7

अफलस्तु कृतो मेष: परां तुष्टिं प्रदास्यति। भवतां हर्षणार्थाय ये च दास्यन्ति मानवा:।।1.49.7।।

aphalastu kṛto meṣa: parāṃ tuṣṭiṃ pradāsyati| bhavatāṃ harṣaṇārthāya ye ca dāsyanti mānavā:||1.49.7||

Translation

अफल: without testicles, कृत: made, मेष: the ram, भवताम् for you, पराम् great, तुष्टिम् joy, प्रदास्यति will give, ये मानवा: those men, दास्यन्ति will give, हर्षणार्थाय for causing delight.

BK-49-8Bala Kanda 49.8

अग्नेस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा पितृदेवास्समागता:। उत्पाट्य मेषवृषणौ सहस्राक्षे न्यवेशयन्।।1.49.8।।

agnestu vacanṃ śrutvā pitṛdevāssamāgatā:| utpāṭya meṣavṛṣaṇau sahasrākṣe nyaveśayan||1.49.8||

Translation

समागता: assembled, पितृदेवा: pitrudevatas, अग्ने: Agni's, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा having heard, मेषवृषणौ testicles of ram, उत्पाट्य extracting, सहस्राक्षे for Indra, न्यवेशयन् grafted.

Meaning

Hearing the words of the Firegod the pitrudevatas assembled, uprooted the testicles of the ram and grafted them on to Indra.

BK-49-9Bala Kanda 49.9

तदा प्रभृति काकुत्स्थ पितृदेवास्समागता:। अफलान् भुञ्जते मेषान् फलैस्तेषामयोजयन्।।1.49.9।।

tadā prabhṛti kākutstha pitṛdevāssamāgatā:| aphalān bhuñjate meṣān phalaisteṣāmayojayan||1.49.9||

Translation

काकुत्स्थ O Kakutstha, समागता: assembled, पितृदेवा: pitrudevatas, तदा प्रभृति then onwards, अफलान् without genitals, मेषान् rams, भुञ्जते accepted as offerings, तेषाम् their, फलै: their testicles, अयोजयन् having fitted.

Meaning

"O Son of the Kakutsthas from then on the pitrudevatas have been accepting rams without testicles as offerings in a sacrifice, with ram's testicles fitted on to Indra.

BK-49-10Bala Kanda 49.10

इन्द्रस्तु मेषवृषणस्तदाप्रभृति राघव। गौतमस्य प्रभावेन तपसश्च महात्मन:।।1.49.10।।

indrastu meṣavṛṣaṇastadāprabhṛti rāghava| gautamasya prabhāvena tapasaśca mahātmana:||1.49.10||

Translation

राघव O Rama, महात्मन: illustrious, गौतमस्य Gautama's, तपस: ascetism, प्रभावेन with the power of, इन्द्र: तु Indra, तदाप्रभृति thenceforth, मेषवृषण: च testicles of ram.

Meaning

O Son of the Raghus illustrious Gautama's power of ascetism was such that thenceforth Indra possessed the testicles of a ram.

BK-49-11Bala Kanda 49.11

तदागच्छ महातेज आश्रमं पुण्यकर्मण:। तारयैनां महाभागामहल्यां देवरूपिणीम्।।1.49.11।।

tadāgaccha mahāteja āśramṃ puṇyakarmaṇa:| tārayaināṃ mahābhāgāmahalyāṃ devarūpiṇīm||1.49.11||

Translation

महातेज: O Highly lustrous Rama, तत् therefore, पुण्यकर्मण: of the pious one, आश्रमम् hermitage of Gautama, आगच्छ enter, महाभागाम् fortunate, देवरूपिणीम् woman of divine appearance, एनाम् this, अहल्यां Ahalya, तारय liberate.

Meaning

"Most brilliant Rama therefore enter the hermitage of the pious (Gautama) and liberate this fortunate Ahalya of divine appearance (from the curse)."

BK-49-12Bala Kanda 49.12

विश्वामित्रवचश्श्रुत्वा राघवस्सहलक्ष्मण:। विश्वामित्रं पुरस्कृत्य तमाश्रममथाविशत्।।1.49.12।।

viśvāmitravacaśśrutvā rāghavassahalakṣmaṇa:| viśvāmitrṃ puraskṛtya tamāśramamathāviśat||1.49.12||

Translation

सहलक्ष्मण: along with Lakshmana, राघव: Rama, विश्वामित्रवच: the words of Visvamitra, श्रुत्वा having listened, अथ thereafter, विश्वामित्रम् Viswamitra, पुरस्कृत्य keeping him ahead, तम् that, आश्रमम् hermitage, आविशत् entered.

Meaning

In response to the words of Viswamitra Rama and Lakshmana entered the hermitage, Viswamitra in front.

BK-49-13-14Bala Kanda 49.13–14 (युग्मम्)

ददर्श च महाभागां तपसा द्योतितप्रभाम्। लोकैरपि समागम्य दुर्निरीक्ष्यां सुरासुरै:।।1.49.13।। प्रयत्नान्निर्मितां धात्रा दिव्यां मायामयीमिव। स तुषारावृतां साभ्रां पूर्णचन्द्रप्रभामिव।।1.49.14।। मध्येंऽभसो दुराधर्षां दीप्तां सूर्यप्रभामिव।

dadarśa ca mahābhāgāṃ tapasā dyotitaprabhām| lokairapi samāgamya durnirīkṣyāṃ surāsurai:||1.49.13|| prayatnānnirmitāṃ dhātrā divyāṃ māyāmayīmiva| sa tuṣārāvṛtāṃ sābhrāṃ pūrṇacandraprabhāmiva||1.49.14|| madhyeṃ'bhaso durādharṣāṃ dīptāṃ sūryaprabhāmiva|

Translation

महाभागाम् highly fortunate, तपसा with the power of ascetism, द्योतितप्रभाम् shining brilliantly, लोकैरपि by men, सुरासुरै: by suras or asuras, समागम्य joined together, दुर्निरीक्ष्याम् incapable of being seen, धात्रा by lord Brahma, प्रयत्नात् with special efforts, निर्मिताम् created, दिव्याम् divine, मायामयीमिव looking like illusory image, तुषारावृताम् covered by mist, साभ्राम् with clouds, पूर्णचन्द्रप्रभामिव looking like brightness of full moon, अम्भस: in the sky, मध्ये in the midst, दुराधर्षाम् inviolable, दीप्ताम् shining, सूर्यप्रभामिव like brightness of sun, स: Rama, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

Rama beheld the highly fortunate Ahalya, shining brilliantly with the power of her asceticism. She could not be seen even by men, suras or asuras joined together. She looked divine and illusory as if created with special efforts by Brahma. Though not clearly visible, she was shining bright like the light of the full Moon muffled by mists in the sky and like the inviolable light of the Sun reflected in the water.

BK-49-15Bala Kanda 49.15

सा हि गौतमवाक्येन दुर्निरीक्ष्या बभूव ह।।1.49.15।। त्रयाणामपि लोकानां यावद्रामस्य दर्शनम्।

sā hi gautamavākyena durnirīkṣyā babhūva ha||1.49.15|| trayāṇāmapi lokānāṃ yāvadrāmasya darśanam|

Translation

सा she, गौतमवाक्येन with the words of Gautama, रामस्य Rama's, दर्शनम्यावत् till the appearance of Rama, त्रयाणामपि लोकानाम् even for three worlds, दुर्निरीक्ष्या incapable of being seen by any, बभूव ह became.

Meaning

By the words of Gautama, she became invisible to the three worlds till the appearance of Rama.

BK-49-16Bala Kanda 49.16

शापस्यान्तमुपागम्य तेषां दर्शनमागता।।1.49.16।। राघवौ तु ततस्तस्या: पादौ जगृहतुस्तदा।

śāpasyāntamupāgamya teṣāṃ darśanamāgatā||1.49.16|| rāghavau tu tatastasyā: pādau jagṛhatustadā|

Translation

शापस्य curse's, अन्तम् end, उपागम्य having reached, तेषाम् their, दर्शनम् appearance, आगता obtained, तत: afterwards, राघवौ Rama and Lakshmana, तदा then, तस्या: her, पादौ feet, जगृहतु: touched.

Meaning

With the expiry of the period of the curse, the Raghavas (Rama and Lakshmana) speared and she became perceptible when Rama touched her feet.

BK-49-17-18Bala Kanda 49.17–18 (युग्मम्)

स्मरन्ती गौतमवच: प्रतिजग्राह सा च तौ।।1.49.17।। पाद्यमर्घ्यं तथाऽऽतिथ्यं चकार सुसमाहिता। प्रतिजग्राह काकुत्स्थो विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा।।1.49.18।।

smarantī gautamavaca: pratijagrāha sā ca tau||1.49.17|| pādyamarghyṃ tathā''tithyṃ cakāra susamāhitā| pratijagrāha kākutstho vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā||1.49.18||

Translation

सा च she also, गौतमवच: words of Gautama, स्मरन्ती recalling, तौ them, प्रतिजग्राह received with due honours, सुसमाहिता with concentration of mind and attention, पाद्यम् water for washing feet, अर्घ्यम् offerings of reverence, तथा and, आतिथ्यम् hospitality, विधिदृष्टेन according to tradition, कर्मणा by acts, चकार performed, काकुत्स्थः Kakusthsa, प्रतिजग्राह received.

Meaning

Recalling the words of Gautama, she received them with water to wash their feet and offerings made with due devotion Rama accepted her hospitality extended in accordance tradition.

BK-49-19Bala Kanda 49.19

पुष्पवृष्टिर्महत्यासीद्देवदुन्दुभिनिस्वनै:। गन्धर्वाप्सरसां चैव महानासीत्समागम:।।1.49.19।।

puṣpavṛṣṭirmahatyāsīddevadundubhinisvanai:| gandharvāpsarasāṃ caiva mahānāsītsamāgama:||1.49.19||

Translation

देवदुन्दुभिनिस्वनै: amidst sounds of divine kettle drums, महती great, पुष्पवृष्टि आसीत् flowers rained, गंधर्वाप्सरसाम् चैव of gandharvas and apsarasas also, महान् great, समागम: union आसीत् took place.

Meaning

Amidst sounds of celestial kettledrums, devatas showered flowers, gandharvas sang and apsarasa danced. There was a great assemblage (of divinities).

BK-49-20Bala Kanda 49.20

साधु साध्विति देवास्तामहल्यां समपूजयन्। तपोबलविशुद्धाङ्गी गौतमस्य वशानुगाम्।।1.49.20।।

sādhu sādhviti devāstāmahalyāṃ samapūjayan| tapobalaviśuddhāṅgī gautamasya vaśānugām||1.49.20||

Translation

गौतमस्य Gautama's, वशानुगाम् in the possession of, तपोबलविशुद्धाङ्गीम् her body purified by the power of penance, ताम् that, अहल्याम् Ahalya, देवा: devatas, साधु साधु इति 'Excellent', 'Excellent', समपूजयन् exclaimed.

Meaning

On seeing Ahalya, her body purified by the power of penance at Gautama's command, the devatas worshipfully exclaimed, 'Excellent, Excellent'

BK-49-21Bala Kanda 49.21

गौतमोऽपि महातेजा अहल्यासहितस्सुखी। रामं सम्पूज्य विधिवत्तपस्तेपे महातपा:।।1.49.21।।

gautamo'pi mahātejā ahalyāsahitassukhī| rāmṃ sampūjya vidhivattapastepe mahātapā:||1.49.21||

Translation

महातपा: possessed of great ascetism, महातेजा: highly glorious, गौतमोऽपि Gautama also, अहल्यासहित: accompanied by Ahalya, सुखी full of joy, रामम् Rama, विधिवत् according to tradition, सम्पूज्य having worshipped, तप: austerities, तेपे performed.

Meaning

Brilliant Gautam, the great ascetic, along with Ahalya, worshipped Rama according to tradition, with delight and continued with his austerities.

BK-49-22Bala Kanda 49.22

रामोऽपि परमां पूजां गौतमस्य महामुने:। सकाशाद्विधिवत्प्राप्य जगाम मिथिलां तत:।।1.49.22।।

rāmo'pi paramāṃ pūjāṃ gautamasya mahāmune:| sakāśādvidhivatprāpya jagāma mithilāṃ tata:||1.49.22||

Translation

रामोऽपि Rama also, गौतमस्य महामुने: of the great ascetic Gautama, सकाशात् from him, परमाम् great, पूजाम् hospitality, विधिवत् according to tradition, प्राप्य having received, मिथिलाम् towards Mithila, जगाम had gone.

Meaning

Having received due hospitality from the great ascetic Gautama Rama also set out towards Mithila. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे एकोनपञ्चाशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fortyninth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
