AK-99-1Ayodhya Kanda 99.1

निविष्टायां तु सेनायामुत्सुको भरतस्तदा। जगाम भ्रातरं द्रष्टुं शत्रुघ्नमनुदर्शयन्।।2.99.1।।

niviṣṭāyāṃ tu senāyāmutsuko bharatastadā| jagāma bhrātarṃ draṣṭuṃ śatrughnamanudarśayan||2.99.1||

Translation

तदा then, सेनायाम् when the army, निविष्टायाम् encamped, भरतः Bharata, उत्सुकः with eagerness, शत्रुघ्नम् Satrughna, अनुदर्शयन् showing, भ्रातरम् brother, द्रष्टुम् to see, जगाम went.

Meaning

Eager to see his brother, Bharata encamped the army and set out showing the hermitage to Satrughna.

AK-99-2Ayodhya Kanda 99.2

ऋषिं वसिष्ठं सन्दिश्य मातृ़र्मे शीघ्रमानय। इति त्वरितमग्रे स जगाम गुरुवत्सलः।।2.99.2।।

ṛṣiṃ vasiṣṭhṃ sandiśya mātṛ़rme śīghramānaya| iti tvaritamagre sa jagāma guruvatsalḥ||2.99.2||

Translation

गुरुवत्सलः devoted towards elders, सः Bharata, मे my, मातृ़ः mothers, शीघ्रम् quickly, आनय bring, इति thus, ऋषिम् rishi, वसिष्ठम् Vasistha, सन्दिश्य having conveyed, त्वरितम् quickly, अग्रे ahead, जगाम proceeded.

Meaning

Bharata, deeply devoted towards elders, indicated to sage Vasistha to bring along the mothers, and proceeded ahead quickly.

AK-99-3Ayodhya Kanda 99.3

सुमन्त्रस्त्वपि शत्रुघ्नमदूरादन्वपद्यत। रामदर्शनजस्तर्षो भरतस्येव तस्य च।।2.99.3।।

sumantrastvapi śatrughnamadūrādanvapadyata| rāmadarśanajastarṣo bharatasyeva tasya ca||2.99.3||

Translation

सुमन्त्रस्त्वपि Sumantra on his part, शत्रुघ्नम् to Satrughna, अदूरात् not far from, अन्वपद्यत followed, रामदर्शनजः arising from seeing Rama, तर्षः overeager, तस्य च for him also, भरतस्येव is like that of Bharata.

Meaning

Sumantra, who was overeager, like Bharata, to see Rama, followed Satrughna who was not far from him.

AK-99-4Ayodhya Kanda 99.4

गच्छन्नेवाथ भरतस्तापसालय संस्थिताम्। भ्रातुः पर्णकुटीं श्रीमानुटजं च ददर्श ह।। 2.99.4।।

gacchannevātha bharatastāpasālaya sṃsthitām| bhrātuḥ parṇakuṭīṃ śrīmānuṭajṃ ca dadarśa ha|| 2.99.4||

Translation

अथ thereafter, श्रीमान् the majestic one, भरतः Bharata, गच्छन्नेव while walking, तापसालयसंस्थिताम् situated like huts of hermits, भ्रातुः brother's, पर्णकुटीम् hut made of leaves, उटजं च thatched cottage, ददर्श ह beheld.

Meaning

While walking, Bharata beheld a hut made of leaves looking like a hermit's cottage.

AK-99-5Ayodhya Kanda 99.5

शालायास्त्वग्रत स्तस्या ददर्श भरत स्तदा। काष्ठानि चावभग्नानि पुष्पाण्युपचितानि च।।2.99.5।।

śālāyāstvagrata stasyā dadarśa bharata stadā| kāṣṭhāni cāvabhagnāni puṣpāṇyupacitāni ca||2.99.5||

Translation

तदा then, भरतः Bharata, तस्याः शालायाः that leafy hut's, अग्रतः in front of, अवभग्नानि shattered, काष्ठानि logs of wood, उपचितानि plucked, पुष्पाणि च also flowers, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

In front of that hut Bharata beheld shattered logs of wood and also flowers plucked.

AK-99-6Ayodhya Kanda 99.6

स लक्ष्मणस्य रामस्य ददर्शाऽश्रममीयुषः। कृतं वृक्षेष्वभिज्ञानं कुशचीरैः क्वचित्क्वचित्।।2.99.6।।

sa lakṣmaṇasya rāmasya dadarśā'śramamīyuṣḥ| kṛtṃ vṛkṣeṣvabhijñānṃ kuśacīraiḥ kvacitkvacit||2.99.6||

Translation

सः he, आश्रमम् hermitage, ईयुषः of a man proceeding towards, लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, रामस्य Rama's, क्वचित् क्वचित् here and there, वृक्षेषु on trees, कुशचीरैः with kusa grass and strips of bark, कृतम् rendered, अभिज्ञानम् as a sign to ascertain, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

Bharata beheld here and there knots of kusa grass and strips of bark tied on trees as signs to ascertain the way to the hermitage of Rama and Lakshmana.

AK-99-7Ayodhya Kanda 99.7

ददर्श वने तस्मिन्महत स्सञ्चयान्कृतान्। मृगाणां महिषाणां च करीषै शशीतकारणात्।।2.99.7।।

dadarśa vane tasminmahata ssañcayānkṛtān| mṛgāṇāṃ mahiṣāṇāṃ ca karīṣai śaśītakāraṇāt||2.99.7||

Translation

सः that Bharata, तस्मिन् वने in that forest, शीतकारणात् due to cold, मृगाणाम् deer's, महिषाणां च also of buffaloes, करीषैः dried cakes of dung, कृतान् prepared, महतः large, सञ्चयान् heaps, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

He also beheld large heaps of dried cakes of dung of buffaloes and deer for use against cold in the forest.

AK-99-8Ayodhya Kanda 99.8

गच्छन्नेव महाबाहुर्द्युतिमान्भरत स्तदा। शत्रुघ्नं चाब्रवीद्धृष्टस्तानमात्यांश्च सर्वशः।।2.99.8।।

gacchanneva mahābāhurdyutimānbharata stadā| śatrughnṃ cābravīddhṛṣṭastānamātyāṃśca sarvaśḥ||2.99.8||

Translation

महाबाहुः longarmed, द्युतिमान् effulgent, भरतः Bharata, तदा then, गच्छन्नेव while going, हृष्टः rejoiced, शत्रुघ्नं च to Satrughna, सर्वशः all around, तान् those, अमात्यांश्च to the ministers, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Walking on, the longarmed, effulgent and delighted Bharata said to Satrughna and the ministers surrounding him:

AK-99-9Ayodhya Kanda 99.9

मन्ये प्राप्ताः स्म तं देशं भरद्वाजो यमब्रवीत्। नातिदूरे हि मन्येऽहं नदीं मन्दाकिनीमितः।।2.99.9।।

manye prāptāḥ sma tṃ deśṃ bharadvājo yamabravīt| nātidūre hi manye'hṃ nadīṃ mandākinīmitḥ||2.99.9||

Translation

यम् about which, भरद्वाजः Bharadwaja, अब्रवीत् had spoken, तं देशम् that region, प्राप्ताः स्म we must have reached, मन्ये I think, मन्दाकिनीं नदीं Mandakini river, इतः from here, नातिदूरे not far, अहम् I, मन्ये think.

Meaning

We must have reached the region about which Bharadwaja had spoken. I think river Mandakini is not far from here.

AK-99-10Ayodhya Kanda 99.10

उच्चैर्बद्धानि चीराणि लक्ष्मणेन भवेदयम्। अभिज्ञानकृतः पन्था अकाले गन्तुमिच्छता।।2.99.10।।

uccairbaddhāni cīrāṇi lakṣmaṇena bhavedayam| abhijñānakṛtḥ panthā akāle gantumicchatā||2.99.10||

Translation

चीराणि long bark garments, उच्चैः on lofty places (trees), बद्धानि have been fastened, अयम् this, अकाले at odd times, गन्तुम् to move out, इच्छता wishing, लक्ष्मणेन by Lakshmana, अभिज्ञानकृतः marks of identification, पन्थाः भवेत् it must have been the path.

Meaning

Here are long bark garments fastened on lofty places as marks of identification left by Lakshmana, to locate the path at odd times which may be needed while going out.

AK-99-11Ayodhya Kanda 99.11

इदं चोदात्तदन्तानां कुञ्जराणां तरस्विनाम्। शैलपार्श्वे परिक्रान्तमन्योन्यमभिगर्जताम्।।2.99.11।।

idṃ codāttadantānāṃ kuñjarāṇāṃ tarasvinām| śailapārśve parikrāntamanyonyamabhigarjatām||2.99.11||

Translation

शैलपार्श्वे on the hillside, इदम् this, उदात्तदन्तानाम् of the largetusked, तरस्विनाम् swift अन्योन्यम् charging at one another, अभिगर्जताम् trumpeting, कुञ्जराणाम् elephants', परिक्रान्तम् place.

Meaning

This must be the place on the hillside on which mighty tuskers wander about trumpeting and charging at one another.

AK-99-12Ayodhya Kanda 99.12

यमेवाधातुमिच्छन्ति तापसा स्सततं वने। तस्यासौ दृश्यते धूम स्सङ्कुलः कृष्णवर्त्मनः।।2.99.12।।

yamevādhātumicchanti tāpasā ssatatṃ vane| tasyāsau dṛśyate dhūma ssaṅkulḥ kṛṣṇavartmanḥ||2.99.12||

Translation

वने in the forest, तापसाः ascetics, सततम् always, यमेव only whom, आधातुम् to maintain, इच्छन्ति wishing, तस्य that, कृष्णवर्त्मनः of blacktrailed fires, असौ this, सङ्कुलः thick, धूमः smoke, दृश्यते is seen.

Meaning

Here is the thick smoke emanating from the blacktrailed fire maintained perpetually by the ascetics living in the forest.

AK-99-13Ayodhya Kanda 99.13

अत्राहं पुरुषव्याघ्रं गुरुसत्कारकारिणम्। आर्यं द्रक्ष्यामि संहृष्टो महर्षिमिव राघवम्।।2.99.13।।

atrāhṃ puruṣavyāghrṃ gurusatkārakāriṇam| āryṃ drakṣyāmi sṃhṛṣṭo maharṣimiva rāghavam||2.99.13||

Translation

अहम् I, पुरुषव्याघ्रम् the best of men, Rama, गुरुसत्कारकारिणम् rendering great hospitality, आर्यम् venerable, महर्षिमिव like a great sage, राघवम् to Rama, संहृष्टः with a delighted heart, अत्र here, द्रक्ष्यामि I shall see.

Meaning

I shall see here with a delighted heart the venerable Rama, the best of men, who renders great hospitality (to elders) and who resembles a maharshi.

AK-99-14Ayodhya Kanda 99.14

अथ गत्वा मुहूर्तन्तु चित्रकूटं स राघवः। मन्दाकिनीमनुप्राप्तस्तं जनं चेदमब्रवीत्।।2.99.14।।

atha gatvā muhūrtantu citrakūṭṃ sa rāghavḥ| mandākinīmanuprāptastṃ janṃ cedamabravīt||2.99.14||

Translation

अथ thereafter, सः राघवः that Bharata, चित्रकूटम् towards Chitrakuta (mountain), मुहूर्तम् for a moment, गत्वा having gone, मन्दाकिनीम् river Mandakini, अनुप्राप्तः having reached, तं जनम् to those people, इदम् those words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Bharata walked for a short distance towards mount Chitrkuta when he reached river Mandakini. And then said to his ministers:

AK-99-15Ayodhya Kanda 99.15

जगत्यां पुरषव्याघ्र आस्ते वीरासने रतः। जनेन्द्रो निर्जनं प्राप्य धिङ्मे जन्म सजीवितम्।।2.99.15।।

jagatyāṃ puraṣavyāghra āste vīrāsane ratḥ| janendro nirjanṃ prāpya dhiṅme janma sajīvitam||2.99.15||

Translation

जनेन्द्रः the lord of men, पुरषव्याघ्रः a tiger among men, निर्जनम् a place devoid of people, प्राप्य having reached, वीरासने in 'heroic' posture, रतः remaining, जगत्याम् on the ground, आस्ते is sitting, मे my, सजीवितम् life, जन्म birth, धिक् fie upon.

Meaning

Rama, the lord of men, a tiger among men, is sitting on the ground in a 'heroic' (yogic) posture in this secluded forest. O fie upon my birth and my life

AK-99-16Ayodhya Kanda 99.16

मत्कृते व्यसनं प्राप्तो लोकनाथो महाद्युतिः। सर्वान्कामान्परित्यज्य वने वसति राघवः।।2.99.16।।

matkṛte vyasanṃ prāpto lokanātho mahādyutiḥ| sarvānkāmānparityajya vane vasati rāghavḥ||2.99.16||

Translation

लोकनाथः lord of the world, महाद्युतिः effulgent, राघवः Rama, मत्कृते on my account, व्यसनम् calamity, प्राप्त: has faced, सर्वान् all, कामान् desires, परित्यज्य renouncing, वने in the forest, वसति is living.

Meaning

Effulgent Rama, the lord of the world, had to renounce all desires and undergo this calamity of living in the forest on my account.

AK-99-17Ayodhya Kanda 99.17

इति लोकसमाक्रुष्टः पादेष्वद्य प्रसादयन्। रामस्य निपतिष्यामि सीताया लक्ष्मणस्य च।।2.99.17।।

iti lokasamākruṣṭḥ pādeṣvadya prasādayan| rāmasya nipatiṣyāmi sītāyā lakṣmaṇasya ca||2.99.17||

Translation

इति thus, लोकसमाक्रुष्टः reviled by the world, अद्य now, प्रसादयन् seeking the grace, रामस्य Rama's, सीतायाः Sita's, लक्ष्मणस्य च and Lakshmana's, पादेषु at the feet, निपतिष्यामि shall fall down.

Meaning

Reviled by the world, I shall now fall at the feet of Sita, Rama and Lakshmana seeking their grace.

AK-99-18Ayodhya Kanda 99.18

एवं संविलपं स्तस्मिन्वने दशरथात्मजः। ददर्श महतीं पुण्यां पर्णशालां मनोरमाम्।।2.99.18।। सालतालाश्वकर्णानां पर्णैर्बहुभिरावृताम्। विशालां मृदुभिस्तीर्णां कुशैर्वेदिमिवाध्वरे।।2.99.19।। शक्रायुधनिकाशैश्च कार्मुकैर्भारसाधनैः। रुक्मपृष्ठैर्महासारै श्शोभितां शत्रुबाधकैः।।2.99.20।। अर्क रश्मि प्रतीकाशैर्घोरैस्तूणीगतैश्शरैः। शोभितां दीप्तवदनै स्सर्पैर्भोगवतीमिव।।2.99.21।। महारजतवासोभ्यामसिभ्यां च विराजिताम्। रुक्मबिन्दुविचित्राभ्यां चर्मभ्यां चापि शोभिताम्।।2.99.22।। गोधाङ्गुळित्रैरासक्तैश्चित्रैः काञ्चनभूषितैः। अरिसंघैरनाधृष्यां मृगै स्सिंहगुहा मिव।।2.99.23।।

evṃ sṃvilapṃ stasminvane daśarathātmajḥ| dadarśa mahatīṃ puṇyāṃ parṇaśālāṃ manoramām||2.99.18|| sālatālāśvakarṇānāṃ parṇairbahubhirāvṛtām| viśālāṃ mṛdubhistīrṇāṃ kuśairvedimivādhvare||2.99.19|| śakrāyudhanikāśaiśca kārmukairbhārasādhanaiḥ| rukmapṛṣṭhairmahāsārai śśobhitāṃ śatrubādhakaiḥ||2.99.20|| arka raśmi pratīkāśairghoraistūṇīgataiśśaraiḥ| śobhitāṃ dīptavadanai ssarpairbhogavatīmiva||2.99.21|| mahārajatavāsobhyāmasibhyāṃ ca virājitām| rukmabinduvicitrābhyāṃ carmabhyāṃ cāpi śobhitām||2.99.22|| godhāṅguळitrairāsaktaiścitraiḥ kāñcanabhūṣitaiḥ| arisṃghairanādhṛṣyāṃ mṛgai ssiṃhaguhā miva||2.99.23||

Translation

एवम् in that way, संविलपन् lamenting, दशरथात्मजः son of Dasaratha (Bharata), तस्मिन् वने in that forest, महतीम् great, पुण्याम् sacred, मनोरमाम् enchanting, सालतालाश्वकर्णानाम् of sala, palmyra and aswakarna trees, बहुभिः by abundance of, मृदुभिः by soft, पर्णैः with leaves, आवृताम् covered, अध्वरे in the sacrifice, कुशैः with kusa grass, तीर्णाम् spread over, विशालाम् spacious, वेदिमिव like altar, शक्रायुधनिकाशैः resembling the thunderbolt of Indra, भारसाधनैः capable of achieving targets, रुक्मपृष्ठैः goldplated, महासारै: by powerful, शत्रुबाधकैः oppressing the enemies, कार्मुकैः with bows, शोभिताम् glittering, सर्पैः with serpents, भोगवतीम् इव like Bhogavati, अर्करश्मिप्रतीकाशैः like the rays of the Sun, घोरैः by dreadful, दीप्तवदनैः with tips blazing, तूणीगतैः stored in quivers, शरैः with arrows, शोभिताम् adorned with, महारजतवासोभ्याम् scabbards made of silver, असिभ्याम् with a pair of swords, विराजिताम् was shining, रुक्मबिन्दुविचित्राभ्याम् of different colours with golden spots, चर्मभ्याम् with shields, ताम् all of them, काञ्चनभूषितैः decorated with gold, चित्रैः different kinds, आसक्तै: hung, गोधाङ्गुलित्रैः fingerguards made of skin of iguana, मृगैः with the deer, सिंहगुहामिव like the cave of a lion, अरिसङ्घै: with hordes of enemies, अनाधृष्याम् impregnable, पर्णशालाम् hut made of leave, तस्मिन् वने in that forest, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Lamenting in this way Bharata beheld in that forest an excellent, sacred and enchanting hut covered with a lot of leaves of sala, palmyra and aswakarna trees like a sacrificial altar spread with soft kusa grass. Goldplated bows that resembled the thunderbolt of Indra, powerful and capable of achieving great targets and oppressing the enemies, adorned the hut. Arrows glittering like the rays of the Sun, were dreadful, with blazing heads and stored in quivers adorned it like the hooded serpents illumining the city of Bhogavati (in the nether world). A pair of swords in scabbards made of excellent silver, two shields of different colours with golden spots, fingerguards made of skin of iguana decorated with gold were hanging there. It was impregnable to enemy hordes like the cave of a lion to the deer.

प्रागुदक्प्रवणां वेदिं विशालां दीप्तपावकाम्। ददर्श भरतस्तत्र पुण्यां रामनिवेशने।।2.99.24।।

prāgudakpravaṇāṃ vediṃ viśālāṃ dīptapāvakām| dadarśa bharatastatra puṇyāṃ rāmaniveśane||2.99.24||

Translation

भरतः Bharata, तत्र there, रामनिवेशने at Rama's residence, प्रागुदक्प्रवणाम् sloping to the northeast, विशालाम् spacious, दीप्तपावकाम् having flaming fire, पुण्याम् sacred, वेदिम् altar, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

Bharata beheld at Rama's residence a sacred and spacious altar sloping to the northeast, with a burning fire upon it.

AK-99-25Ayodhya Kanda 99.25

निरीक्ष्य स मुहूर्तं तु ददर्श भरतो गुरुम्। उटजे राममासीनं जटामण्डलधारिणम्।।2.99.25।।

nirīkṣya sa muhūrtṃ tu dadarśa bharato gurum| uṭaje rāmamāsīnṃ jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇam||2.99.25||

Translation

सः भरतः that Bharata, मुहूर्तम् for a moment, निरीक्ष्य looking around, उटजे in the cottage, आसीनम् seated, जटामण्डलधारिणम् wearing matted locks of hair, गुरुम् esteemed brother, रामम् Rama, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Bharata looked around for a moment and saw his esteemed brother Rama seated in that thatched cottage wearing matted locks of hair.

AK-99-26-28Ayodhya Kanda 99.26–28 (त्रिकम्)

तं तु कृष्णाजिनधरं चीरवल्कलवाससम्। ददर्श राममासीनमभितः पावकोपमम्।।2.99.26।। सिंहस्कन्धं महाबाहुं पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणम्। पृथिव्यास्सागरान्तायाः भर्तारं धर्मचारिणम्।।2.99.27।। उपविष्टं महाबाहुं ब्रह्माणमिव शाश्वतम्। स्थण्डिले दर्भसंस्तीर्णे सीतया लक्ष्मणेन च।।2.99.28।।

tṃ tu kṛṣṇājinadharṃ cīravalkalavāsasam| dadarśa rāmamāsīnamabhitḥ pāvakopamam||2.99.26|| siṃhaskandhṃ mahābāhuṃ puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇam| pṛthivyāssāgarāntāyāḥ bhartārṃ dharmacāriṇam||2.99.27|| upaviṣṭṃ mahābāhuṃ brahmāṇamiva śāśvatam| sthaṇḍile darbhasṃstīrṇe sītayā lakṣmaṇena ca||2.99.28||

Translation

कृष्णाजिनधरम् clad in antelope skin, चीरवल्कलवासम् dressed in garments made of bark, अभितः near him, पावकोपमम् resembling blazing fire, आसीनम् seated, सिंहस्कन्दम् with his shoulders like that of a lion, महाबाहुम् longarmed, पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणम् with eyes like white lotus, सागरान्तायाः bounded by the ocean, पृथिव्याः of the earth, भर्तारम् the lord, धर्मचारिणम् follower of righteouness, तं रामम् that Rama, ददर्श saw, महाबाहुम् of longarmed one, शाश्वतम् eternal, ब्रह्माणमिव like the creator Brahma, सीतया with Sita, लक्ष्मणेन along with Lakshmana, दर्भसंस्तीर्णे on the ground strewn with darbha grass, स्थण्डिले on the bare ground, उपविष्टम् seated.

Meaning

He saw Rama, lord of the oceanbound earth, seated like blazing fire, clad in antelope skin and garment of bark, with long arms and shoulders like a lion and eyes like white lotuses. The mightyarmed warrior seemed like Brahma, the creator and the eternal, protector of righteousness. Accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana Rama sat on the bare ground strewn with darbha grass.

AK-99-29Ayodhya Kanda 99.29

तं दृष्ट्वा भरत श्श्रीमान् दुःखशोकपरिप्लुतः। अभ्यधावत धर्मात्मा भरतः कैकेयी सुतः।।2.99.29।।

tṃ dṛṣṭvā bharata śśrīmān duḥkhaśokapariplutḥ| abhyadhāvata dharmātmā bharatḥ kaikeyī sutḥ||2.99.29||

Translation

श्रीमान् majestic, भरतः Bharata, तम् that Rama, दृष्ट्वा having seen, दुःखशोकपरिप्लुतः overwhelmed with grief and distress, धर्मात्मा righteous, कैकयीसुतः son of Kaikeyi, भरतः Bharata, अभ्यधावत ran towards him.

Meaning

Beholding Rama, Bharata the majestic and righteous son of Kaikeyi overwhelmed with grief and distress rushed towards him.

AK-99-30Ayodhya Kanda 99.30

दृष्ट्वैव विललापाऽर्तो बाष्पसन्दिग्धया गिरा। अशक्नुवन् धारयितुं धैर्याद्वचनमब्रवीत्।।2.99.30।।

dṛṣṭvaiva vilalāpā'rto bāṣpasandigdhayā girā| aśaknuvan dhārayituṃ dhairyādvacanamabravīt||2.99.30||

Translation

दृष्ट्वैव as soon as he saw, आर्तः anguished, बाष्पसन्दिग्धया choked with tears, गिरा with words, विललाप lamented, धैर्यात् with courage, धारयितुम् to restrain, अशक्नुवन् being unable, वचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

On seeing Rama, Bharata could not control his grief with patience and lamented in great anguish and with words choked with tears said:

AK-99-31Ayodhya Kanda 99.31

य स्संसदि प्रकृतिभिर्भवेद्युक्त उपासितुम्। वन्यैर्मृगैरुपासीन स्सोऽयमास्ते ममाग्रजः।।2.99.31।।

ya ssṃsadi prakṛtibhirbhavedyukta upāsitum| vanyairmṛgairupāsīna sso'yamāste mamāgrajḥ||2.99.31||

Translation

यः he who, संसदि in the royal assembly, प्रकृतिभिः by ministers and other subjects, उपासितुम् to be attended upon, युक्तः one who deserves, भवेत् becomes, सः he, अयम् this, man, मम my, अग्रजः elder brother, वन्यैः wild, मृगैः by the beasts, उपासीनः आस्ते is being attended.

Meaning

My elder brother who deserves to be attended by ministers and other subjects in the royal assembly sits here today in the forest surrounded by wild beasts.

AK-99-32Ayodhya Kanda 99.32

वासोभिर्बहुसाहस्रैर्यो महात्मा पुरोचितः। मृगाजिने सोऽयमिह प्रवस्ते धर्ममाचरन्।।2.99.32।।

vāsobhirbahusāhasrairyo mahātmā purocitḥ| mṛgājine so'yamiha pravaste dharmamācaran||2.99.32||

Translation

यः महात्मा that magnanimous (Rama), पुरा formerly, बहुसाहस्रैः with many thousands, वासोभिः with clothes, उचितः was accustomed, सः such, अयम् now, धर्मम् righteousness, आचरन् practising, मृगाजिने two deer kins, प्रवस्ते is wearing.

Meaning

Such magnanimous Rama, a follower of dharma, accustomed to be attired in thousands of dresses in the past now clad in two deer skins, is practising righteousness.

AK-99-33Ayodhya Kanda 99.33

अधारयद्यो विविधाश्चित्रास्सुमनसस्तदा। सोऽयं जटाभारमिमं वहते राघवः कथम्।।2.99.33।।

adhārayadyo vividhāścitrāssumanasastadā| so'yṃ jaṭābhāramimṃ vahate rāghavḥ katham||2.99.33||

Translation

यः that Rama, तदा then, विविधाः various, चित्राः colours, सुमनसः flowers, आधारयत् wore, सः such a man, अयं राघवः this Rama, इमं जटाभारम् the weight of matted hair, कथम् how, वहते is able to bear?

Meaning

How is it that Rama who used to wear variegated flowers formerly, now bears these heavy matted locks?

AK-99-34Ayodhya Kanda 99.34

यस्य यज्ञैर्यथादिष्टैर्युक्तो धर्मस्य सञ्चयः। शरीरक्लेशसम्भूतं स धर्मं परिमार्गते।।2.99.34।।

yasya yajñairyathādiṣṭairyukto dharmasya sañcayḥ| śarīrakleśasambhūtṃ sa dharmṃ parimārgate||2.99.34||

Translation

यथोद्विष्टैः in accordance with desire, यज्ञैः with sacrifices, यस्य to whom, धर्मस्य righteousness, सञ्चयः accumulation, युक्तः was quite possible, सः such Rama, शरीरक्लेशसंभूतम् rising due to mortification of body, धर्मम् righteouness, परिमार्गते is seeking.

Meaning

That Rama, who in accordance with tradition deserves accredition of religious merit through sacrifices now seeks it through mortification of body.

AK-99-35Ayodhya Kanda 99.35

चन्दनेन महार्हेण यस्याङ्गमुपसेवितम्। मलेन तस्याङ्गमिदं कथमार्यस्य सेव्यते।।2.99.35।।

candanena mahārheṇa yasyāṅgamupasevitam| malena tasyāṅgamidṃ kathamāryasya sevyate||2.99.35||

Translation

यस्य whose, अङ्गम् body, महार्हेण by highly valuable, चन्दनेन with sandal paste, उपसेवितम् smeared, तस्य his, आर्यस्य esteemed brother's, इदम् अङ्गम् this body, मलेन with dirt, कथम् how, सेव्यते is being served?

Meaning

How is it that the body of my venerable brother which was once smeared with expensive, fragrant sandal paste is now covered with dust?

AK-99-36Ayodhya Kanda 99.36

मन्निमित्तमिदं दुःखं प्राप्तो रामः सुखोचितः। धिग्जीवितं नृशंसस्य मम लोकविगर्हितम्।।2.99.36।।

mannimittamidṃ duḥkhṃ prāpto rāmḥ sukhocitḥ| dhigjīvitṃ nṛśṃsasya mama lokavigarhitam||2.99.36||

Translation

सुखोचितः accustomed to comforts, रामः Rama, मन्निमित्तम् on my account, इदं दुःखम् this misfortune, प्राप्तः has obtained, नृशंसस्य of a cruel one, मम my, लोकविगर्हितम् condemned by the world, जीवितम् धिक् fie on my life.

Meaning

It is on my account that Rama who was accustomed to all comforts has fallen into this misfortune. Fie on my life of cruelty which is condemned by the world.

AK-99-37Ayodhya Kanda 99.37

इत्येवं विलपन्दीनः प्रस्विन्नमुखपङ्कजः। पादावप्राप्य रामस्य पपात भरतो रुदन्।।2.99.37।।

ityevṃ vilapandīnḥ prasvinnamukhapaṅkajḥ| pādāvaprāpya rāmasya papāta bharato rudan||2.99.37||

Translation

भरतः Bharata, दीनः miserable, प्रस्विन्नमुखपङ्कजः lotuslike countenance full of sweat, इत्येवम् thus, विलपन् lamenting, रामस्य Rama's, पादौ feet, अप्राप्य before reaching, रुदन् crying in distress, पपात fell down.

Meaning

Thus Bharata lamented in misery and with his lotuslike countenanace sweating before reaching Rama's feet fell down, crying in distress.

AK-99-38Ayodhya Kanda 99.38

दुःखाभितप्तो भरतो राजपुत्रो महाबलः। उक्त्वाऽर्येति सकृद्दीनं पुनर्नोवाच किञ्चन।।2.99.38।।

duḥkhābhitapto bharato rājaputro mahābalḥ| uktvā'ryeti sakṛddīnṃ punarnovāca kiñcana||2.99.38||

Translation

महाबलः mighty, राजपुत्रः prince, भरतः Bharata, दुःखाभितप्तः oppressed with grief, आर्य इति saying o Arya (venerable one), सकृत् once, दीनम् in distress, उक्त्वा having said, पुनः again, किञ्चन anything, नोवाच could not speak.

Meaning

Mighty prince Bharata, oppressed with grief, could only say, O Arya (venerable one) And in distress could not speak any more.

AK-99-39Ayodhya Kanda 99.39

बाष्पाभिहतकण्ठश्च प्रेक्ष्य रामं यशस्विनम्। आर्येत्येवाभिसङ्क्रुश्य व्याहर्तुं नाशकत्तदा।।2.99.39।।

bāṣpābhihatakaṇṭhaśca prekṣya rāmṃ yaśasvinam| āryetyevābhisaṅkruśya vyāhartuṃ nāśakattadā||2.99.39||

Translation

यशस्विनम् glorious, रामम् Rama, प्रेक्ष्य on seeing, बाष्पाभिहतकण्ठश्च with choked throat, अथ then, आर्येत्येव O Arya, सङ्क्रुश्य crying out, तदा thereafter, व्याहर्तुम् to talk further, नाशकत् was not able.

Meaning

As he beheld the glorious Rama, with his throat choken with tears, he cried out, O Arya (venerable one) and thereafter, was unable to speak any more.

AK-99-40Ayodhya Kanda 99.40

शत्रुघ्नश्चापि रामस्य ववन्दे चरणौ रुदन्। तावुभौ स समालिङ्ग्य रामश्चाश्रूण्यवर्तयत्।।2.99.40।।

śatrughnaścāpi rāmasya vavande caraṇau rudan| tāvubhau sa samāliṅgya rāmaścāśrūṇyavartayat||2.99.40||

Translation

शत्रुघ्नश्चापि Satrughna too, रुदन् weeping, रामस्य Rama's, चरणौ feet, ववन्दे prostrated, सः रामश्च that Rama also, तौ उभौ the two of them, समालिङ्ग्य having embraced, अश्रूणि tears, अवर्तयत् shed.

Meaning

Satrughna also prostrated himself at the feet of tearful Rama who embraced both of them.

AK-99-41Ayodhya Kanda 99.41

ततस्सुमन्त्रेण गुहेन चैव समीयतु राजसुतावरण्ये। दिवाकरश्चैव निशाकरश्च यथाऽम्बरे शुक्रबृहस्पतिभ्याम्।।2.99.41।।

tatassumantreṇa guhena caiva samīyatu rājasutāvaraṇye| divākaraścaiva niśākaraśca yathā'mbare śukrabṛhaspatibhyām||2.99.41||

Translation

ततः therafter, अरण्ये in the forest, राजसुतौ the princes (Rama and Lakshmana), अम्बरे in the sky, दिवाकरश्चैव Sun, निशाकरश्च Moon, शुक्रबृहस्पतिभ्याम् with Sukra and Brihaspathi, यथा similarly, सुमन्त्रेण with Sumantra, गुहेन चैव with Guha, समीयतुः met.

Meaning

Thereafter, princes Rama and Lakshmana joined Sumantra and Guha in the forest like the Sun and the Moon meeting the planets Sukra and Brihaspati in the sky.

AK-99-42Ayodhya Kanda 99.42

तान्पार्थिवान्वारणयूथपाभान्समागतां स्तत्र महत्यरण्ये। वनौकसस्तेऽपि समीक्ष्य सर्वेऽप्यश्रूण्यमुञ्चन्प्रविहाय हर्षम्।।2.99.42।।

tānpārthivānvāraṇayūthapābhānsamāgatāṃ statra mahatyaraṇye| vanaukasaste'pi samīkṣya sarve'pyaśrūṇyamuñcanpravihāya harṣam||2.99.42||

Translation

ते सर्वे they all, वनौकसः inhabitants of the forest, तत्र there, महति in great, अरण्ये in the forest, समागतान् united, वारणयूथपाभान् with the effulgence of mighty leaders of elephant herds, तान् पार्थिवान् those kings, समीक्ष्य on seeing, हर्षम् delight, प्रविहाय having forsaken, अश्रूणि tears, अमुञ्चन् shed.

Meaning

On seeing the princes now assembled in the great forest like mighty leaders of elephant herds, inhabitants of the forest had nothing but tears of grief, not joy, to shed. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे एकोनशततमस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the ninetyninth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
