AK-95-1Ayodhya Kanda 95.1

अथ शैलाद्विनिष्क्रम्य मैथिलीं कोसलेश्वरः। अदर्शयच्छुभजलां रम्यां मन्दाकिनीं नदीम्।।2.95.1।।

atha śailādviniṣkramya maithilīṃ kosaleśvarḥ| adarśayacchubhajalāṃ ramyāṃ mandākinīṃ nadīm||2.95.1||

Translation

अथ then, कोसलेश्वरः lord of Kosala (Rama), शैलात् from the mountain, विनिष्क्रम्य having descended, शुभजलाम् of sacred water, रम्याम् charming, मन्दाकिनीं नदीम् river Mandakini, मैथिलीम् to Sita, अदर्शयत् showed.

Meaning

Then Rama, the lord of Kosala, descended from the mountain and showed Sita the charming river Mandakini of sacred waters.

AK-95-2Ayodhya Kanda 95.2

अब्रवीच्च वरारोहां चारुचन्द्रनिभाननाम्। विदेहराजस्य सुतां रामो राजीवलोचनः।।2.95.2।।

abravīcca varārohāṃ cārucandranibhānanām| videharājasya sutāṃ rāmo rājīvalocanḥ||2.95.2||

Translation

राजीवलोचनः lotus-eyed, रामः Rama, वरारोहाम् to the heavy-hipped, चारुचन्द्रनिभाननाम् to her whose face resembled the beautiful Moon, विदेहराजस्य of the king of Videha, सुताम् daughter, अब्रवीच्च said.

Meaning

Lotus-eyed Rama said to the heavy-hipped daughter of the king of Videha, whose face resembled the beautiful Moon.

AK-95-3Ayodhya Kanda 95.3

विचित्रपुलिनां रम्यां हंससारससेविताम्। कमलैरुपसम्पन्नां पश्य मन्दाकिनीं नदीम्।।2.95.3।।

vicitrapulināṃ ramyāṃ hṃsasārasasevitām| kamalairupasampannāṃ paśya mandākinīṃ nadīm||2.95.3||

Translation

विचित्रपुलिनाम् of variagated sandbanks, रम्याम् enchanting, हंससारससेविताम् frequented by geese and swans, कमलैः with lotus, उपसम्पन्नाम् adorned with, मन्दाकिनीं नदीम् river Mandakini, पश्य look.

Meaning

Look at this enchanting river Mandakini with its variegated sandbanks frequented by geese and swans and adorned with lotuses.

AK-95-4Ayodhya Kanda 95.4

नानाविधैस्तीररुहै र्वृतां पुष्पफलद्रुमैः। राजन्तीं राजराजस्य नलिनीमिव सर्वतः।।2.95.4।।

nānāvidhaistīraruhai rvṛtāṃ puṣpaphaladrumaiḥ| rājantīṃ rājarājasya nalinīmiva sarvatḥ||2.95.4||

Translation

सर्वतः everywhere, नानाविधैः of various kinds, तीररुहैः growing on its banks, पुष्पफलद्रुमैः trees, laden with fruits and flowers, वृताम् surrounded by, राजराजस्य Kubera's, नलिनीम् इव like fragrant lake Nalini, राजन्तीम् sparkling.

Meaning

See this river sparkling with trees of every kind laden with fruits and flowers growing on its banks. Everywhere it resembles the lake Nalini of Kubera.

AK-95-5Ayodhya Kanda 95.5

मृगयूथनिपीतानि कलुषाम्भांसि साम्प्रतम्। तीर्थानि रमणीयानि रतिं सञ्जनयन्ति मे।।2.95.5।।

mṛgayūthanipītāni kaluṣāmbhāṃsi sāmpratam| tīrthāni ramaṇīyāni ratiṃ sañjanayanti me||2.95.5||

Translation

साम्प्रतम् just now, मृगयूथनिपीतानि drunk by herds of deer, कलुषाम्भांसि of turbid waters, रमणीयानि lovely, तीर्थानि landing places, मे to me, रतिम् pleasure, सञ्जनयन्ति is producing.

Meaning

The herds of deer have just drunk water by descending down the landing places and the waters are still turbid. This sight produces great pleasure in me.

AK-95-6Ayodhya Kanda 95.6

जटाजिनधराः काले वल्कलोत्तरवाससः। ऋषय स्त्ववगाहन्ते नदीं मन्दाकिनीं प्रिये।।2.95.6।।

jaṭājinadharāḥ kāle valkalottaravāsasḥ| ṛṣaya stvavagāhante nadīṃ mandākinīṃ priye||2.95.6||

Translation

प्रिये O my beloved, जटाजिनधराः with matted locks and wearing deer skins, वल्कलोत्तरवाससः bark as upper cloth, ऋषयः rishis, काले at the appointed hour, मन्दाकिनीं नदीम् the river Mandakini, अवगाहन्ते are immersing.

Meaning

O my beloved rishis with matted locks and wearing deer skins and bark of trees as upper cloth bathe in the river Mandakini for performing morning ablutions in time.

AK-95-7Ayodhya Kanda 95.7

आदित्यमुपतिष्ठन्ते नियमादूर्ध्वबाहवः। एते परे विशालाक्षि मुनय स्संशितव्रताः।।2.95.7।।

ādityamupatiṣṭhante niyamādūrdhvabāhavḥ| ete pare viśālākṣi munaya ssṃśitavratāḥ||2.95.7||

Translation

विशालाक्षि O largeeyed Sita, संशितव्रताः of rigid austerities, एते परे some other, मुनयः ascetics, नियमात् according to tradition, ऊर्ध्वबाहवः lifting up their arms, आदित्यम् Sungod, उपतिष्ठन्ते are worhipping.

Meaning

O largeeyed Sita, some other ascetics of rigid austerities worship the sungod according to tradition, lifting up their arms and invoking the Sun.

AK-95-8Ayodhya Kanda 95.8

मारुतोद्धूतशिखरैः प्रनृत्त इव पर्वतः। पादपैः पत्रपुष्पाणि सृजद्भिरभितो नदीम्।।2.95.8।।

mārutoddhūtaśikharaiḥ pranṛtta iva parvatḥ| pādapaiḥ patrapuṣpāṇi sṛjadbhirabhito nadīm||2.95.8||

Translation

मारुतोद्धूतशिखरैः tree tops swayed by the wind, नदीमभितः around the river, पत्रपुष्पाणि leaves and flowers, सृजद्भिः shedding, पादपैः with trees, पर्वतः mountain, प्रनृत्त इव seems dancing.

Meaning

With the trees whose tops are swayed by the wind, the mountain was as if dancing, shedding leaves and flowers all around the river.

AK-95-9Ayodhya Kanda 95.9

चिन्मणिनिकाशोदां क्वचित्पुलिनशालिनीम्। क्वचित्सिद्धजनाकीर्णां पश्य मन्दाकिनीं नदीम्।।2.95.9।।

cinmaṇinikāśodāṃ kvacitpulinaśālinīm| kvacitsiddhajanākīrṇāṃ paśya mandākinīṃ nadīm||2.95.9||

Translation

क्वचित् at some places, मणिनिकाशोदाम् with water transparent as crystals, क्वचित् at some other places, पुलिनशालिनीम् sparkling with sand dunes, क्वचित् at some places, सिद्धजनाकीर्णाम् filled with siddhas (those acomplished in spiritual pursuits), मन्दाकिनीं नदीम् river Mandakini, पश्य see.

Meaning

Behold this river Mandakini whose waters here are transparent like crystals, there sparkling with sand dunes and elsewhere crowded with siddhas.

AK-95-10Ayodhya Kanda 95.10

निर्धूतान्वायुना पश्य विततान्पुष्पसञ्चयान्। पोप्लूयमानानपरान्पश्य त्वं जलमध्यगान्।।2.95.10।।

nirdhūtānvāyunā paśya vitatānpuṣpasañcayān| poplūyamānānaparānpaśya tvṃ jalamadhyagān||2.95.10||

Translation

वायुना by the wind, निर्धूतान् shaken off, विततान् scattered, पुष्पसञ्चयान् heaps of flowers, पश्य see, जलमध्यगान् in the midst of waters, पोप्लूयमानान् floating, अपरान् other masses of flowers, त्वम् you, पश्य see.

Meaning

Look at the scattered heaps of flowers shaken off by the wind and large quantities of flowers floating on the waters.

AK-95-11Ayodhya Kanda 95.11

तांश्चातिवल्गुवचसो रथाङ्गाह्वयना द्विजाः। अधिरोहन्ति कल्याणि निष्कूजन्त श्शुभा गिरः।।2.95.11।।

tāṃścātivalguvacaso rathāṅgāhvayanā dvijāḥ| adhirohanti kalyāṇi niṣkūjanta śśubhā girḥ||2.95.11||

Translation

कल्याणि O my auspicious Sita, वल्गुवचसः of sweetvoiced, रथाङ्गाह्वयनाः birds named Chakravaka, द्विजाः birds, शुभाः most pleasant, गिरः tones, निष्कूजन्तः uttering, तान् on those (heaps of flowers), अधिरोहन्ति alighting.

Meaning

O my auspicious Sita, sweetvoiced Chakravaka birds singing in most pleasant tones are alighting on those heaps of flowers.

AK-95-12Ayodhya Kanda 95.12

दर्शनं चित्रकूटस्य मन्दाकिन्याश्च शोभने। अधिकं पुरवासाच्च मन्ये तव च दर्शनात्।।2.95.12।।

darśanṃ citrakūṭasya mandākinyāśca śobhane| adhikṃ puravāsācca manye tava ca darśanāt||2.95.12||

Translation

शोभने my lovely Sita, तव your, दर्शनात् in presence, चित्रकूटस्य Chitrakuta's, मन्दाकिन्याश्च Mandakini's, दर्शनम् viewing, पुरवासाच्छ compared to living in Ayodhya, अधिकम् is greater, मन्ये I consider.

Meaning

My lovely Sita, I consider watching this mount Chitrakuta and river Mandakini in your presence more delightful than living in Ayodhya.

AK-95-13Ayodhya Kanda 95.13

विधूतकलुषै स्सिद्धैस्तपोदमशमान्वितैः। नित्यविक्षोभितजलां विगाहस्व मया सह।।2.95.13।।

vidhūtakaluṣai ssiddhaistapodamaśamānvitaiḥ| nityavikṣobhitajalāṃ vigāhasva mayā saha||2.95.13||

Translation

विधूतकलुषैः cleansed of sins, तपोदमशमान्वितैः endowed with asceticism, selfrestraint and tranquillity, सिद्धैः with siddhas, नित्यविक्षोभितजलाम् with perpetually agitated waters, मया सह with me, विगाहस्व enter.

Meaning

The waters of river Mandakini is perpetually agitated by siddhas who are endowed with asceticism, selfrestraint and tranquillity and who are cleansed of sins by taking bath in the river. Plunge with me into this river.

AK-95-14Ayodhya Kanda 95.14

सखीवच्च विगाहस्व सीते मन्दाकिनीं नदीम्। कमलान्यवमज्जन्ती पुष्कराणि च भामिनि।।2.95.14।।

sakhīvacca vigāhasva sīte mandākinīṃ nadīm| kamalānyavamajjantī puṣkarāṇi ca bhāmini||2.95.14||

Translation

भामिनि O lovely, सीते Sita, कमलानि red lotuses, पुष्कराणि च white lotuses, अवमज्जन्ती submerging, सखीवत् like a friend, मन्दाकिनीं नदीम् Mandakini river, विगाहस्व you may enter.

Meaning

O lovely Sita, like a companion plunge into this river Mandakini, submerging the red and white lotuses, and enjoy sporting.

AK-95-15Ayodhya Kanda 95.15

त्वं पौरजनवद्व्यालानयोध्यामिव पर्वतम्। मन्यस्व वनिते नित्यं सरयूवदिमां नदीम्।।2.95.15।।

tvṃ paurajanavadvyālānayodhyāmiva parvatam| manyasva vanite nityṃ sarayūvadimāṃ nadīm||2.95.15||

Translation

वनिते O my lovely lady, त्वम् you, व्यालान् wild animals, पौरजनवत् as inhabitants of Ayodhya, पर्वतम् mountain, अयोध्यामिव as Ayodhya, इमाम् this, नदीम् river, सरयूवत् as Sarayu, नित्यम् always, मन्यस्व think of.

Meaning

O my lovely lady Always think this river Mandakini as Sarayu and this mount Chitrakuta as Ayodhya and these wild animals as its inhabitants.

AK-95-16Ayodhya Kanda 95.16

लक्ष्मणश्चापि धर्मात्मा मन्निदेशे व्यवस्थितः। त्वं चानुकूला वैदेहि प्रीतिं जनयथो मम।।2.95.16।।

lakṣmaṇaścāpi dharmātmā mannideśe vyavasthitḥ| tvṃ cānukūlā vaidehi prītiṃ janayatho mama||2.95.16||

Translation

वैदेहि O Sita, धर्मात्मा righteous, लक्ष्मणश्चापि Lakshmana also, मन्निदेशे at my command, व्यवस्थितः obedient, त्वं च you also, अनुकूला agreeable, मम to me, प्रीतिम् pleasure, जनयथः are causing.

Meaning

With righteous Lakshmana obedient and you, O Sita, agreeable to me, you both bring me great pleasure.

AK-95-17Ayodhya Kanda 95.17

उपस्पृशंस्त्रिषवणं मधुमूलफलाशनः। नायोध्यायैन राज्याय स्पृहयेऽद्य त्वया सह।।2.95.17।।

upaspṛśṃstriṣavaṇṃ madhumūlaphalāśanḥ| nāyodhyāyaina rājyāya spṛhaye'dya tvayā saha||2.95.17||

Translation

त्रिषवणम् thrice at the time of prayers, उपस्पृशन् bathing, मधुमूलफलाशनः honey, roots and fruits, त्वया सह in your company, अद्य now, अयोध्यायै for Ayodhya, न स्पृहये I do not yearn for, राज्याय न nor even the kingdom.

Meaning

Bathing thrice in your company at the time of prayers and partaking honey, roots and fruits, I do not yearn either for Ayodhya or for the kingdom.

AK-95-18Ayodhya Kanda 95.18

इमांहि रम्यां मृगयूथशालिनीं निपीततोयां गजसिंहवानरैः। सुपुष्पितां पुष्पभरैरलङ्कृतां नसोऽस्ति य स्स्यान्न गतक्लम स्सुखी।।2.95.18।।

imāṃhi ramyāṃ mṛgayūthaśālinīṃ nipītatoyāṃ gajasiṃhavānaraiḥ| supuṣpitāṃ puṣpabharairalaṅkṛtāṃ naso'sti ya ssyānna gataklama ssukhī||2.95.18||

Translation

रम्याम् enchanting, मृगयूथशालिनीम् teeming with herds of deer, गजसिंहवानरैः with elephants, lions and monkeys, निपीततोयाम् its waters being drunk by, सुपुष्पिताम् in full bloom, पुष्पभरैः with multitude of flowers, अलङ्कृताम् decorated, इमाम् this (river Mandakini), यः who, गतक्लमः with fatigue gone, सुखी happy, न स्यात् will not find himself, सः that one, नास्ति does not exist.

Meaning

With this enchanting Mandakini teeming with herds of deer, whose waters are drunk by elephants, lions and monkeys, decorated with heaps of flowers fallen from the trees in full bloom, who will not feel happy and free from fatigue.

AK-95-19Ayodhya Kanda 95.19

इतीव रामो बहुसङ्गतं वचः प्रियासहाय स्सरितं प्रति ब्रुवन्। चचार रम्यं नयनाञ्जनप्रभं स चित्रकूटं रघुवंशवर्धनः।।2.95.19।।

itīva rāmo bahusaṅgatṃ vacḥ priyāsahāya ssaritṃ prati bruvan| cacāra ramyṃ nayanāñjanaprabhṃ sa citrakūṭṃ raghuvṃśavardhanḥ||2.95.19||

Translation

रघुवंशवर्धनः perpetuator of Raghu dynasty, सः रामः that Rama, इतीव in this manner, सरितं प्रति about Mandakini river, बहु at length, सङ्गतम् appropriate, वचः words, ब्रुवन् speaking, प्रियासहायः in the company of his beloved, नयनाञ्जनप्रभम् resembling collyrium in hue, रम्यम् delightful, चित्रकूटम् Chitrakuta, चचार wandered about.

Meaning

Rama, the perpetuator of the Raghu dynasty, describing the river Mandakini at length appropriately in this manner, wandered in the company of his beloved consort on mount Chitrakuta looking black like collyrium. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे पञ्चनवतितमस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the ninetyfifth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
