AK-50-1Ayodhya Kanda 50.1

विशालान् कोसलान् रम्यान् यात्वा लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः। अयोध्याभिमुखो धीमान् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।2.50.1।।

viśālān kosalān ramyān yātvā lakṣmaṇapūrvajḥ| ayodhyābhimukho dhīmān prāñjalirvākyamabravīt||2.50.1||

Translation

लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः Lakshmana's elder brother, धीमान् sagacious, रम्यान् beautiful, विशालान् vast, कोसलान् kingdom of Kosala, यात्वा gone beyond, अयोध्याभिमुखः facing Ayodhya, प्राञ्जलिः with folded hands, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Having crossed the vast, beautiful kingdom of Kosala, the sagacious elder brother of Lakshmana stood facing Ayodhya with folded palms and said:

AK-50-2Ayodhya Kanda 50.2

आपृच्छे त्वां पुरीश्रेष्ठे काकुत्स्थपरिपालिते। दैवतानि च यानि त्वां पालयन्ति वसन्ति च।।2.50.2।।

āpṛcche tvāṃ purīśreṣṭhe kākutsthaparipālite| daivatāni ca yāni tvāṃ pālayanti vasanti ca||2.50.2||

Translation

काकुत्स्थपरिपालिते a city ruled by the Kakutsthas, पुरीश्रेष्ठे best among cities, त्वाम् you, यानि दैवतानि all those gods, वसन्ति inhabiting, पालयन्ति च are guarding you also, आपृच्छे I am taking leave.

Meaning

O Ayodhya, the best of cities ruled by those born in the Kakutstha race I take leave of you and of all those gods inhabiting and guarding you.

AK-50-3Ayodhya Kanda 50.3

निवृत्तवनवासस्त्वामनृणो जगतीपतेः। पुनर्द्रक्ष्यामि मात्रा च पित्रा च सह सङ्गतः।।2.50.3।।

nivṛttavanavāsastvāmanṛṇo jagatīpateḥ| punardrakṣyāmi mātrā ca pitrā ca saha saṅgatḥ||2.50.3||

Translation

जगतीपतेः lord of the world (king Dasaratha), अनृणः free from debt, निवृत्तवनवासः having completed forest life, मात्रा च with mother, पित्रा च with father, सङ्गतः reunited, त्वाम् you, पुनः again, द्रक्ष्यामि will see.

Meaning

On completion of exile and my filial obligations to king Dasaratha, lord of the world, discharged, I shall, reunited with my parents, see you again.

AK-50-4Ayodhya Kanda 50.4

ततो रुधिरताम्राक्षो भुजमुद्यम्य दक्षिणम्। अश्रुपूर्णमुखो दीनोऽब्रवीज्जानपदं जनम्।।2.50.4।।

tato rudhiratāmrākṣo bhujamudyamya dakṣiṇam| aśrupūrṇamukho dīno'bravījjānapadṃ janam||2.50.4||

Translation

ततः then, अश्रुपूर्णमुखः face filled with tears, रुधिरताम्राक्षः eyes copperred, दीनः dejected, दक्षिणम् right, भुजम् arm, उद्यम्य having raised, जानपदम् pertaining to villages, जनम् people, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

He looked miserable, his copperred eyes filled with tears. He raised his right hand and said to the villagers who had come to see him:

AK-50-5Ayodhya Kanda 50.5

अनुक्रोशो दया चैव यथार्हं मयि वः कृतः। चिरं दुःखस्य पापीयो गम्यतामर्थसिद्धये।।2.50.5।।

anukrośo dayā caiva yathārhṃ mayi vḥ kṛtḥ| cirṃ duḥkhasya pāpīyo gamyatāmarthasiddhaye||2.50.5||

Translation

मयि in me, यथार्हम् appropriately, वः to you, दया चैव kindness, अनुक्रोशः compassion, कृतः has been done, दुःखस्य of suffering, चिरम् for long, पापीयः is sinful, अर्थसिद्धये to discharge your duties, गम्यताम् go.

Meaning

You have aptly shown your kindness and compassion to me. It is not proper to prolong one's grief. So do go and altend to your duties.

AK-50-6Ayodhya Kanda 50.6

तेऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम्। विलपन्तो नरा घोरं व्यतिष्ठन्त क्वचित् क्वचित्।।2.50.6।।

te'bhivādya mahātmānṃ kṛtvā cāpi pradakṣiṇam| vilapanto narā ghorṃ vyatiṣṭhanta kvacit kvacit||2.50.6||

Translation

ते नराः those people, महात्मानम् highsouled, अभिवाद्य having paid respect, प्रदक्षिणं चापि circumambulation, कृत्वा having made, घोरम् frightfully, विलपन्तः lamenting, क्वचित् क्वचित् hither and thither, व्यतिष्ठन्त stood (looking at him).

Meaning

All of them paid their homage by circumambulating the highsouled Rama. Crying bitterly, they stood here and there.

AK-50-7Ayodhya Kanda 50.7

तथा विलपतां तेषामतृप्तानां च राघवः। अचक्षुर्विषयं प्रायाद्यथार्कः क्षणदामुखे।।2.50.7।।

tathā vilapatāṃ teṣāmatṛptānāṃ ca rāghavḥ| acakṣurviṣayṃ prāyādyathārkḥ kṣaṇadāmukhe||2.50.7||

Translation

अतृप्तानाम् not satisfied, तेषाम् them, तथा in that manner, विलपताम् lamenting, राघवः Rama, क्षणदामुखे at nightfall, अर्कः the Sun, यथा like that, अचक्षुर्विषयम् out of sight, प्रायात् went.

Meaning

Not yet satisfied (they wanted to linger longer), they stood weeping, while Rama went out of sight just as the Sun disappears at nightfall.

AK-50-8-10Ayodhya Kanda 50.8–10 (त्रिकम्)

ततो धान्यधनोपेतान् दानशीलजनान् शिवान्। अकुतश्चिद्भयान् रम्यांश्चैत्ययूपसमावृतान्।।2.50.8।। उद्यानाम्रवनोपेतान् सम्पन्नसलिलाशयान्। तुष्टपुष्टजनाकीर्णान् गोकुलाकुलसेवितान्।।2.50.9।। लक्षणीयान्नरेन्द्राणां ब्रह्मघोषाभिनादितान्। रथेन पुरुषव्याघ्रः कोसलानत्यवर्तत।।2.50.10।।

tato dhānyadhanopetān dānaśīlajanān śivān| akutaścidbhayān ramyāṃścaityayūpasamāvṛtān||2.50.8|| udyānāmravanopetān sampannasalilāśayān| tuṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇān gokulākulasevitān||2.50.9|| lakṣaṇīyānnarendrāṇāṃ brahmaghoṣābhināditān| rathena puruṣavyāghrḥ kosalānatyavartata||2.50.10||

Translation

ततः then, पुरुषव्याघ्रः tiger (best) among men (Rama), धान्यधनोपेतान् rich in wealth and foodgrain, दानशीलजनान् with charitable people, शिवान् auspicious, अकुतश्चिद्भयान् free from fear, रम्यान् charming, चैत्ययूपसमावृतान् surrounded by sacrificial altars and posts, उद्यानाम्रवनोपेतान् filled with pleasure gardens and mango groves, सम्पन्नसलिलाशयान् tanks filled with water, तुष्टपुष्टजनाकीर्णान् full of contented and wellnourished people, गोकुलाकुलसेवितान् with herds of cattle, नरेन्द्राणाम् for kings, लक्षणीयान् fit to be seen, ब्रह्मघोषाभिनादितान् echoed with the sounds of Vedic recitations, कोसलान् Kosala kingdom, रथेन by the chariot, अत्यवर्तत crossed over.

Meaning

Rama, the best of men, crossed the auspicious land of Kosala which was worth seeing by kings. It looked charming with sacrificial posts and altars, pleasure gardens and mango groves and tanks filled with water. It was rich with herds of cattle, wealth and foodgrains. It was inhabited by charitable, contented and wellnourished people free from fear from any quarter. And it reverberated with the sounds of Vedic recitations.

AK-50-11Ayodhya Kanda 50.11

मध्येनमुदितं स्फीतं रम्योद्यानसमाकुलम्। राज्यं भोग्यं नरेन्द्राणां ययौ धृतिमतां वरः।।2.50.11।।

madhyenamuditṃ sphītṃ ramyodyānasamākulam| rājyṃ bhogyṃ narendrāṇāṃ yayau dhṛtimatāṃ varḥ||2.50.11||

Translation

धृतिमताम् among those endowed with fortitude, वरः best, मुदितम् pleased, स्फीतम् prosperous, रम्योद्यानसमाकुलम् full of ravishing gardens, नरेन्द्राणाम् of kings, भोग्यम् fit to be enjoyed, राज्यम् of that kingdom, मध्येन in its middle, ययौ went.

Meaning

Rama, the greatest among those endowed with fortitude, travelled through the middle of the kingdom which was pleasing, prosperous and full of ravishing gardens fit to be enjoyed by kings.

AK-50-12Ayodhya Kanda 50.12

तत स्त्रिपथगां दिव्यां शिवतोयामशैवलाम्। ददर्श राघवो गङ्गां पुण्यामृषिनिषेविताम्।।2.50.12।।

tata stripathagāṃ divyāṃ śivatoyāmaśaivalām| dadarśa rāghavo gaṅgāṃ puṇyāmṛṣiniṣevitām||2.50.12||

Translation

तत्र there, राघवः Rama, त्रिपथगाम् flowing in three worlds, रम्याम् beautiful, शिवतोयाम् sacred waters, आशैवलाम् free from moss, पुण्याम् holy, ऋषिसेविताम् worshipped by sages, गङ्गाम् Ganga, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

There Rama saw the holy Ganga flowing in three (worlds) with her sacred waters, free from moss, and worshipped by sages.

AK-50-13Ayodhya Kanda 50.13

आश्रमैरविदूरस्थैः श्रीमद्भिस्समलङ्कृताम्। कालेऽप्सरोभिर्हृष्टाभि स्सेविताम्भोह्रदां शिवाम्।।2.50.13।।

āśramairavidūrasthaiḥ śrīmadbhissamalaṅkṛtām| kāle'psarobhirhṛṣṭābhi ssevitāmbhohradāṃ śivām||2.50.13||

Translation

अविदूरस्थैः by those situated not far away, श्रीमद्भिः by the graceful, आश्रमैः by hermitages, समलङ्कृताम् adorned with, काले at times, हृष्टाभिः delightful, अप्सरोभिः by nymphs, सेविताम्भोह्रदाम् sport in her lakes, शिवाम् auspicious (Ganga).

Meaning

The holy Ganga, adorned with graceful hermitages situated not far away is visited at times by delightful nymphs who sport in her lakes.

AK-50-14Ayodhya Kanda 50.14

देवदानवगन्धर्वैः किन्नरैरुपशोभिताम्। नानागन्धर्वपत्नीभि स्सेवितां सततं शिवाम्।।2.50.14।।

devadānavagandharvaiḥ kinnarairupaśobhitām| nānāgandharvapatnībhi ssevitāṃ satatṃ śivām||2.50.14||

Translation

देवदानवगन्धर्वैः by devatas, danavas, and gandharvas, किन्नरैः by kinneras, उपशोभिताम् looking splendid, नानागन्धर्वपत्नीभिः by wives of several gandharvas, सततम् always, सेविताम्, inhabited, शिवाम् auspicious(Ganga).

Meaning

The Ganga is graced by devatas, danavas, gandharvas and kinneras. Wives of several gandharvas always visit this auspicious river.

AK-50-15Ayodhya Kanda 50.15

देवाऽऽक्रीडशताकीर्णां देवोद्यानशतायुताम्। देवार्थमाकाशगमां विख्यातां देवपद्मिनीम्।।2.50.15।।

devā''krīḍaśatākīrṇāṃ devodyānaśatāyutām| devārthamākāśagamāṃ vikhyātāṃ devapadminīm||2.50.15||

Translation

देवाऽऽक्रीडशताकीर्णां filled with hundreds of hills serving as sporting places for devatas देवोद्यानशतायुताम् hundreds of pleasuregardens for devatas, देवार्थम् for the sake of devatas, आकाशगमाम् flowing through heaven, देवपद्मिनीम् as Devapadmini, where celestial lotuses grow, विख्याताम् is wellknown.

Meaning

Since this river flows through heavens for the gods, it is wellknown as 'Devapadmini' where celestial lotuses grow. The river embraces hundreds of hills serving as sporting places and pleasuregardens for gods.

AK-50-16Ayodhya Kanda 50.16

जलाघाताट्टहासोग्रां फेननिर्मलहासिनीम्। क्वचिद्वेणीकृतजलां क्वचिदावर्तशोभिताम्।।2.50.16।।

jalāghātāṭṭahāsogrāṃ phenanirmalahāsinīm| kvacidveṇīkṛtajalāṃ kvacidāvartaśobhitām||2.50.16||

Translation

जलाघाताट्टहासोग्राम् ferocious with the sound of dashing waters resembling loud laughter, फेननिर्मलहासिनीम् with the sparkling smile of foam, क्वचित् at some places, वेणीकृतजलाम् with waters flowing straight like a maiden's braid, क्वचित् at some places, आवर्तशोभिताम् shining with whirlpools.

Meaning

The sound of dashing waters of the Ganga is like her laughter and the foam like her sparkling smile. Here she flows straight like the braid of a maiden and there in whirlpools.

AK-50-17Ayodhya Kanda 50.17

क्वचित् स्तिमितगम्भीरां क्वचिद्वेगजलाकुलाम्। क्वचिद्गम्भीरनिर्घोषां क्वचिद्भैरवनिस्वनाम्।।2.50.17।।

kvacit stimitagambhīrāṃ kvacidvegajalākulām| kvacidgambhīranirghoṣāṃ kvacidbhairavanisvanām||2.50.17||

Translation

क्वचित् at places, स्तिमितगम्भीराम् was deep and quiet, क्वचित् at places, वेगजलाकुलाम् perturbed due to fastflowing waters, क्वचित् at places, गम्भीरनिर्घोषाम् making majestic sound, क्वचित् at some place, भैरवनिस्वनाम् makes dreadful sounds.

Meaning

Here the Ganga runs deep but quiet, there she looks perturbed due to fastflowing waters, here she flows with a deep groan and there with a dreadful roar.

AK-50-18Ayodhya Kanda 50.18

देवसङ्घाप्लुतजलां निर्मलोत्पलशोभिताम्। क्वचिदाभोगपुलिनां क्वचिन्निर्मलवालुकाम्।।2.50.18।।

devasaṅghāplutajalāṃ nirmalotpalaśobhitām| kvacidābhogapulināṃ kvacinnirmalavālukām||2.50.18||

Translation

देवसङ्घाप्लुतजलाम् in the waters of which hosts of celestials take ablutions, निर्मलोत्पलशोभिताम् decked with pure blue lilies, क्वचित् at some places, अभोगपुलिनाम् with curved banks, क्वचित् at some places, निर्मलवालुकाम् white sands.

Meaning

Here hosts of celestials take their ablutions and there she shines with lilies of pure blue. Here her banks are curved and there her bed is dotted with patches of white sand.

AK-50-19Ayodhya Kanda 50.19

हंससारससङ्घुष्टां चक्रवाकोपकूजिताम्। सदा मदैश्च विहगैरभिसन्नादितान्तराम्।।2.50.19।।

hṃsasārasasaṅghuṣṭāṃ cakravākopakūjitām| sadā madaiśca vihagairabhisannāditāntarām||2.50.19||

Translation

हंससारससङ्घुष्टाम् reverberating with cries of swans and cranes, चक्रवाकोपकूजिताम् filled with cries of chakravakas (ruddy geese), सदामदैः विहगैः always filled with passionate birds, अभिसन्नादितान्तराम् filled with sounds at intervals.

Meaning

The river reverberates with the cries of swans, cranes and chakravakas (ruddy goose). It rings intermittently with the chirpings of birds charged with endless pasison.

AK-50-20Ayodhya Kanda 50.20

क्वचित्तीररुहैर्वृक्षैर्मालाभिरिवशोभिताम्। क्वचित्फुल्लोत्पलच्छन्नां क्वचित्पद्मवनाकुलाम्।।2.50.20।।

kvacittīraruhairvṛkṣairmālābhirivaśobhitām| kvacitphullotpalacchannāṃ kvacitpadmavanākulām||2.50.20||

Translation

क्वचित् at some places,तीररुहैः grown on the banks,वृक्षैः with trees, मालाभिरिव like garlands,शोभिताम् decorated, क्वचित् at some places, फुल्लोत्पलच्छन्नाम् covered with fulblown waterlilies, क्वचित् at some places, पद्मवनाकुलाम् spread with multitudes of lotuses.

Meaning

Here on her banks stand trees adorned as though with garlands, and there in her waters abound fullblown lilies and a forest of lotuses.

AK-50-21Ayodhya Kanda 50.21

क्वचित्कुमुदषण्डैश्च कुड्मलैरुपशोभिताम्। नानापुष्परजोध्वस्तां समदामिव च क्वचित्।।2.50.21।।

kvacitkumudaṣaṇḍaiśca kuḍmalairupaśobhitām| nānāpuṣparajodhvastāṃ samadāmiva ca kvacit||2.50.21||

Translation

क्वचित् at some places, कुमुदषण्डैश्च with hosts of waterlilies, कुड्मलैः halfblown flowers, उपशोभिताम् adorned, नानापुष्परजोध्वस्ताम् pollen from different kinds of flowers, क्वचित् in some places, समदाम् इव as if intoxicated with passion.

Meaning

Here she is decked with hosts of waterlilies and halfblown flowers while elsewhere she looks intoxicated with the pollen fallen from various flowers.

AK-50-22Ayodhya Kanda 50.22

व्यपेतमलसङ्घातां मणिनिर्मलदर्शनाम्। दिशागजैर्वनगजै र्मत्तैश्च वरवारणैः।।2.50.22।। देवोपवाह्यैश्च मुहुस्सन्नादितवनान्तराम्।

vyapetamalasaṅghātāṃ maṇinirmaladarśanām| diśāgajairvanagajai rmattaiśca varavāraṇaiḥ||2.50.22|| devopavāhyaiśca muhussannāditavanāntarām|

Translation

व्यपेतमलसङ्घाताम् cleansed of heaps of impurities, मणिनिर्मलदर्शनाम् appearing like a transparent gem, दिशागजैः by the elephants gaurding the quarters, मत्तैश्च by intoxicated ones, वनगजैः wild elephants, देवोपवाहैः by those suitable for carrying gods, वरवारणैः with excellent elephants, मुहुः repeatedly, सन्नादितवनान्तराम् resounding in the interiors of the forest.

Meaning

The river, cleansed of heaps of impurities, appears like a transparent gem. The interiors of forests on her banks always resounds with the trumpeting of mighty, intoxicated, wild elephants guarding the quarters, fit to be the vehicles of gods.

AK-50-23-24Ayodhya Kanda 50.23–24 (युग्मम्)

प्रमदामिव यत्नेन भूषितां भूषणोत्तमैः।।2.50.23।। फलैः पुष्पैः किसलयैर्वृतां गुल्मैर्द्विजैस्तथा। शिंशुमारैश्च नक्रैश्च भुजङ्गैश्च निषेविताम्।।2.50.24।।

pramadāmiva yatnena bhūṣitāṃ bhūṣaṇottamaiḥ||2.50.23|| phalaiḥ puṣpaiḥ kisalayairvṛtāṃ gulmairdvijaistathā| śiṃśumāraiśca nakraiśca bhujaṅgaiśca niṣevitām||2.50.24||

Translation

फलैः with fruits, पुष्पैः with flowers, किसलयैः with tender leaves or shoots, गुल्मैः with shrubs, तथा similarly, द्विजैः with birds, वृताम् encompassed, भूषणोत्तमैः with excellent ornaments, यत्नेन carefully, भूषिताम् decorated, प्रमदामिव like a woman, शिंशुमारैश्च small whales, नक्रैश्च with crocodiles, भुजङ्गैश्च with serpents, निषेविताम् is served.

Meaning

Just like a lady, Ganga is decorated with the best of ornaments her banks are filled with fruits, flowers, tender leaves or shoots and (flowering) shrubs. It is inhabited by birds and brahmins and infested with sisumaras (small whales), crocodiles and serpents.

AK-50-25-26Ayodhya Kanda 50.25–26 (युग्मम्)

विष्णुपादच्युतां दिव्यामपापां पापनाशिनीम्। तां शङ्करजटाजूटाद्भ्रष्टां सागरतेजसा।।2.50.25।। समुद्रमहिषीं गङ्गां सारसक्रौञ्चनादिताम्। आससाद महाबाहुः शृङ्गिबेरपुरं प्रति।।2.50.26।।

viṣṇupādacyutāṃ divyāmapāpāṃ pāpanāśinīm| tāṃ śaṅkarajaṭājūṭādbhraṣṭāṃ sāgaratejasā||2.50.25|| samudramahiṣīṃ gaṅgāṃ sārasakrauñcanāditām| āsasāda mahābāhuḥ śṛṅgiberapurṃ prati||2.50.26||

Translation

महाबाहुः mightyarmed, विष्णुपादच्युताम् dropped from the feet of lord Visnu, दिव्याम् divine, अपापाम् sinless, पापनाशिनीम् destroyer of sins, सागरतेजसा due to the effulgence (penance) of Sagara's son (Bhagiratha), शङ्कर जटाजूटात् from the matted hair of lord Siva, भ्रष्टाम् dropped, समुद्रमहिषीम् consort of the Ocean, सारसक्रौञ्चनादिताम् echoed with the cries of kraunchas and herons, तां गङ्गाम् that Ganga, शृङ्गिबेरपुरं प्रति towards Srngiberapura, आससाद reached.

Meaning

Mightyarmed Rama reached Srngaberapura on the bank of this consort of the ocean, this Ganga loud with the cries of kraunchas and herons. This sinless, divine Ganga, destroyer of sins who flows from the feet of lord Visnu and by the effulgence (penance) of Sagara's son (Bhagiratha) emerged from the matted locks of lord Siva.

AK-50-27Ayodhya Kanda 50.27

तामूर्मिकलिलावर्तामन्ववेक्ष्य महारथः। सुमन्त्रमब्रवीत्सूतमिहैवाद्य वसामहे।।2.50.27।।

tāmūrmikalilāvartāmanvavekṣya mahārathḥ| sumantramabravītsūtamihaivādya vasāmahe||2.50.27||

Translation

महारथः great chariotwarrior, ऊर्मिकलिलावर्ताम् river full of tumultuous waves with whirlpools, ताम् that, अन्ववेक्ष्य on beholding, सूतम् charioteer, सुमन्त्रम् Sumantra, अब्रवीत् said, अद्य today, अत्रैव here itself, वसामहे will spend.

Meaning

Beholding river Ganga full of waves and whirlpools, the great chariotwarrior (Rama) said to Sumantra: We shall spend the night here.
