AK-69-1Aranya Kanda 69.1

कृत्वैवमुदकं तस्मै प्रस्थितौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। अवेक्षन्तौ वने सीतां पश्चिमां जग्मतुर्दिशम्।।3.69.1।।

kṛtvaivamudakṃ tasmai prasthitau rāmalakṣmaṇau| avekṣantau vane sītāṃ paścimāṃ jagmaturdiśam||3.69.1||

Translation

एवम् thus, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, तस्मै for him, उदकं कृत्वा after offering libation, प्रस्थितौ both started, पश्चिमाम् westward, दिशम् direction, वने in the forest, सीताम् Sita, अवेक्षन्तौ while both searching and looking, जग्मतुः went .

Meaning

Rama and Lakshmana offered libations (for Jatayu) and went westward, looking for Sita in the forest.

AK-69-2Aranya Kanda 69.2

तौ दिशं दक्षिणां गत्वा शरचापासिधारिणौ। अविप्रहतमैक्ष्वाकौ पन्थानं प्रतिपेदतुः।।3.69.2।।

tau diśṃ dakṣiṇāṃ gatvā śaracāpāsidhāriṇau| aviprahatamaikṣvākau panthānṃ pratipedatuḥ||3.69.2||

Translation

शरचापासिधारिणौ wielding bows, arrows and swords, तौ both, ऐक्ष्वाकौ two princes of the Ikshvaku race, (ताम् that), दक्षिणाम् southward, दिशम् direction, गत्वा went, अविप्रहतम् untrodden, पन्थानम् path, प्रतिपेदतुः reached.

Meaning

Wielding bow, arrows and sword, both the princes of the Ikshvaku race went southward and entered an untrodden (densely wooded) tract.

AK-69-3Aranya Kanda 69.3

गुल्मैर्वृक्षैश्च बहुभिर्लताभिश्च प्रवेष्टितम्। आवृतं सर्वतो दुर्गं गहनं घोरदर्शनम्।।3.69.3।।

gulmairvṛkṣaiśca bahubhirlatābhiśca praveṣṭitam| āvṛtṃ sarvato durgṃ gahanṃ ghoradarśanam||3.69.3||

Translation

बहुभिः by many, गुल्मैः by shrubs, वृक्षैश्च and by trees, लताभिश्च and by creepers, प्रवेष्टितम् overgrown, सर्वतः all over, आवृतम् covered, दुर्गम् difficult to reach, गहनम् impenetrable, घोरदर्शनम् appearing ferocious

Meaning

It was a dense, impenetrable and dreadful forest covered with shrubs, trees and creepers spread all over.

AK-69-4Aranya Kanda 69.4

व्यतिक्रम्य तु वेगेन व्यालसिंहनिषेवितम्। सुभीमं तन्महारण्यं व्यतियातौ महाबलौ।।3.69.4।।

vyatikramya tu vegena vyālasiṃhaniṣevitam| subhīmṃ tanmahāraṇyṃ vyatiyātau mahābalau||3.69.4||

Translation

महाबलौ two mighty princes, व्यालसिंहनिषेवितम् where serperts and lions dwell, सुभीमम् very fierceful, तत् that, महारण्यम् great forest, वेगेन swiftly, व्यतिक्रम्य after forging through, व्यतियातौ both crossed over.

Meaning

The two mighty heroes swiftly forged through the great forest, which was an abode of serpents and lions.

AK-69-5Aranya Kanda 69.5

ततः परं जनस्थानातत्रिक्रोशं गम्य राघवौ। क्रौञ्चारण्यं विविशतुर्गहनं तौ महौजसौ।।3.69.5।।

tatḥ parṃ janasthānātatrikrośṃ gamya rāghavau| krauñcāraṇyṃ viviśaturgahanṃ tau mahaujasau||3.69.5||

Translation

ततः then, परम् later, महौजसौ mighty, तौ they both, राघवौ two scions of the Raghus, जनस्थानात् from Janasthana, त्रिक्रोशम् three krosas distance (one krosa 2 miles), गम्य after going, गहनम् impassable, क्रौञ्चारण्यम् kraunchaforest, विविशतुः entered.

Meaning

Both the mighty princes of the Raghu dynasty covered a distance of three krosas from Janasthana and entered the impassable kraunchaforest.

AK-69-6-7Aranya Kanda 69.6–7 (युग्मम्)

नानामेघघनप्रख्यं प्रहृष्टमिव सर्वतः। नानापक्षिगणैर्युक्तं नानाव्यालमृगैर्युतम्।।3.69.6।। दिदृक्षमाणौ वैदेहीं तद्वनं तौ विचिक्यतुः। तत्र तत्रावतिष्ठन्तौ सीताहरणकर्शितौ।।3.69.7।।

nānāmeghaghanaprakhyṃ prahṛṣṭamiva sarvatḥ| nānāpakṣigaṇairyuktṃ nānāvyālamṛgairyutam||3.69.6|| didṛkṣamāṇau vaidehīṃ tadvanṃ tau vicikyatuḥ| tatra tatrāvatiṣṭhantau sītāharaṇakarśitau||3.69.7||

Translation

सीताहरणकर्शितौ both tormented by the abduction of Sita, तौ they two, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, दिदृक्षमाणौ eager to see, तत्र there, अवतिष्ठन्तौ both stopping a while, नानामेघघनप्रख्यम् looking like dense clouds, सर्वतः all over, प्रहृष्टमिव as if it was over joyed, नानापक्षिगणैः with different birds, युक्तम् filled, नानाव्यालमृगैः by various snakes and animals, युतम् filled with, तत् that, वनम् forest, विचिक्यतुः they both searched.

Meaning

Tormented due to abduction of Sita, the two princes anxious to see her searched all over the dense forest stopping here and there on the way. The thick forest looked like a conglomeration of big clouds. It was filled with different kinds of birds, snakes and animals.

AK-69-8-10Aranya Kanda 69.8–10 (त्रिकम्)

ततः पूर्वेण तौ गत्वा त्रिक्रोशं भ्रातरौ तदा। क्रौञ्चारण्यमतिक्रम्य मतङ्गाश्रममन्तरा।।3.69.8।। दृष्ट्वा तु तद्वनं घोरं बहुभीममृगद्विजम्। ननासत्त्वसमाकीर्णं सर्वं गहनपादपम्।।3.69.9।। ददृशाते तु तौ तत्र दरीं दशरथात्मजौ। पातालसमगम्भीरां तमसा नित्यसंवृताम्।।3.69.10।।

tatḥ pūrveṇa tau gatvā trikrośṃ bhrātarau tadā| krauñcāraṇyamatikramya mataṅgāśramamantarā||3.69.8|| dṛṣṭvā tu tadvanṃ ghorṃ bahubhīmamṛgadvijam| nanāsattvasamākīrṇṃ sarvṃ gahanapādapam||3.69.9|| dadṛśāte tu tau tatra darīṃ daśarathātmajau| pātālasamagambhīrāṃ tamasā nityasṃvṛtām||3.69.10||

Translation

तदा then, भ्रातरौ the two brothers, तौ दशरथात्मजौ the two sons of Dasaratha, ततः then, पूर्वेण by eastern direction, त्रिक्रोशम् three krosas distance, गत्वा went, क्रौञ्चारण्यम् kraunchaforest, अतिक्रम्य crossed, मतङ्गाश्रमम् अन्तरा near the hermitage of sage Matanga, घोरम् terrific, बहुभीममृगद्विजम् filled with fearful beasts and birds, नानासत्त्वसमाकीर्णम् teeming with different kinds of creatures, गहनपादपम् dense trees, सर्वम् all, तत् that, वनम् forest, दृष्ट्वा seeing, तत्र there, (गिरौ on the hill), पातालसमगम्भीराम् deep like the nether world, तमसा darkness, नित्यसंवृताम् always filled with, दरीम् cave, ददृशाते both saw.

Meaning

Then both the sons of Dasaratha, went further east, crossed the kraunchaforest after three krosas. They saw a dreadful forest which was full of fierce animals and birds near the hermitage of sage Matanga. It was densely covered with trees. They saw there a cave perpetually enveloped in darkness which was as deep as the netherworld.

AK-69-11Aranya Kanda 69.11

आसाद्य तौ नरव्याघ्रौ दर्यास्तस्याविदूरतः। ददृशाते महारूपां राक्षसीं विकृताननाम्।।3.69.11।।

āsādya tau naravyāghrau daryāstasyāvidūratḥ| dadṛśāte mahārūpāṃ rākṣasīṃ vikṛtānanām||3.69.11||

Translation

तौ both of them, नरव्याघ्रौ best among men, आसाद्य reached, तस्याः from that, दर्याः from the cave, विदूरतः not very far from that place, महारूपाम् a woman of huge size, विकृताननाम् a woman of disfigured face, राक्षसीम् demoness, ददृशाते both saw.

Meaning

Both the princes,the best among men, reached the cave and saw a huge demoness with a disfigured face not far from the cave.

AK-69-12-13Aranya Kanda 69.12–13 (युग्मम्)

भयदामल्पसत्त्वानां बीभत्सां रौद्रदर्शनाम्। लम्बोदरीं तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रां करालीं परुषत्वचम्।।3.69.12।। भक्षयन्तीं मृगान्भीमान्विकटां मुक्तमूर्धजाम्। प्रैक्षेतां तौ ततस्तत्र भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ।।3.69.13।।

bhayadāmalpasattvānāṃ bībhatsāṃ raudradarśanām| lambodarīṃ tīkṣṇadṃṣṭrāṃ karālīṃ paruṣatvacam||3.69.12|| bhakṣayantīṃ mṛgānbhīmānvikaṭāṃ muktamūrdhajām| praikṣetāṃ tau tatastatra bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau||3.69.13||

Translation

ततः then, भ्रातरौ both brothers, तौ रामलक्ष्मणौ both Rama and Lakshmana, अल्पसत्त्वानाम् for the timid, भयदाम् one creating fear, बीभत्साम् a woman of uncouth appearance, रौद्रदर्शनाम् a woman of terrific appearance, लम्बोदरीम् a woman of big stomach, तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्राम् a woman with sharp teeth, करालीम् terrific woman, भीमान् fearful, मृगान् animals, भक्षयन्तीम् was eating, विकटाम् who had huge curved skins, मुक्तमूर्धजाम् a woman with hair spread out, तत्र there, प्रैक्षेताम् saw.

Meaning

Then the two brothers saw a fearful demoness who could strike terror in the mind of the timid, an uncouth figure with huge curved skins, with a big stomach, dishevelled hair, sharp and long teeth, devouring wild animals.

AK-69-14Aranya Kanda 69.14

सा समासाद्य तौ वीरौ व्रजन्तं भ्रातुरग्रतः। एहि रंस्यावहेत्युक्त्वा समालम्बत लक्ष्मणम्।।3.69.14।।

sā samāsādya tau vīrau vrajantṃ bhrāturagratḥ| ehi rṃsyāvahetyuktvā samālambata lakṣmaṇam||3.69.14||

Translation

सा she, वीरौ both heroes, तौ both, समासाद्य coming close, एहि come on, रंस्यावहे we will both sport and enjoy sex, इति thus, उक्त्वा said, भ्रातुः brother's, अग्रतः in front of, व्रजन्तम् moving, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, समालम्बत held.

Meaning

She came close to them, held Lakshmana who was walking ahead of his brother and said Come, let us enjoy.

AK-69-15-16Aranya Kanda 69.15–16 (युग्मम्)

उवाच चैनं वचनं सौमित्रिमुपगूह्य सा। अहं त्वयोमुखी नाम लब्धा ते त्वमसि प्रियः।।3.69.15।। नाथ पर्वतकूटेषु नदीनां पुलिनेषु च। आयुश्शेषमिमं वीर त्वं मया सह रंस्यसे।।3.69.16।।

uvāca cainṃ vacanṃ saumitrimupagūhya sā| ahṃ tvayomukhī nāma labdhā te tvamasi priyḥ||3.69.15|| nātha parvatakūṭeṣu nadīnāṃ pulineṣu ca| āyuśśeṣamimṃ vīra tvṃ mayā saha rṃsyase||3.69.16||

Translation

सा she, सौमित्रिम् to Saumitri, उपगुह्य took hold of, एनम् him, वचनम् words, उवाच च spoke, अहं तु I am, अयोमुखी नाम Ayomukhi by name, ते to you, लब्धा obtained by you, त्वम् him, प्रियः dear, वीर hero, नाथ lord, इमम् this, आयुःशेषम् rest of your life, त्वम् you, मया सह with me, पर्वतकूटेषु on the lofty hills, नदीनाम् पुलिनेषु च on the river banks, रंस्यसे you will enjoy.

Meaning

Taking hold of Saumitri the demoness said 'I am Ayomukhi and I have been obtained by you. You got me, O hero, O lord For the rest of your life you will sport with me on the lofty hills and river banks.'

AK-69-17Aranya Kanda 69.17

एवमुक्तस्तु कुपितः खड्गमुद्धृत्य लक्ष्मणः। कर्णनासास्तनं तस्या निचकर्तारिसूदनः।।3.69.17।।

evamuktastu kupitḥ khaḍgamuddhṛtya lakṣmaṇḥ| karṇanāsāstanṃ tasyā nicakartārisūdanḥ||3.69.17||

Translation

एवम् thus, उक्तः having been told, अरिसूदनः subduer of enemies, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, कुपितः became angry, खड्गम् sword, उद्धृत्य after lifting, तस्याः her, कर्णनासास्तनम् ears, nose and breasts, चकर्त cut off.

Meaning

Thus addressed, Lakshmana, subduer of enemies, became angry, took out the sword and cut off her ears, nose and breasts.

AK-69-18Aranya Kanda 69.18

कर्णनासे निकृत्ते तु विस्वरं सा विनद्य च। यथागतं प्रदुद्राव राक्षसी भीमदर्शना।।3.69.18।।

karṇanāse nikṛtte tu visvarṃ sā vinadya ca| yathāgatṃ pradudrāva rākṣasī bhīmadarśanā||3.69.18||

Translation

भीमदर्शना a woman of frightening appearance, सा राक्षसी that demoness, कर्णनासे ears and nose, निकृत्ते when they were cut, विस्वरम् with cracked voice, विनद्य after shouting, यथागतम् in the same way as she came, प्रदुद्राव ran away.

Meaning

When the ears and nose of the frightening demoness were cut off she shouted in a fierce tone and ran away in the direction she had come from.

AK-69-19Aranya Kanda 69.19

तस्यां गतायां गहनं व्रजन्तौ वनमोजसा। आसेदतुरमित्रघ्नौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ।।3.69.19।।

tasyāṃ gatāyāṃ gahanṃ vrajantau vanamojasā| āsedaturamitraghnau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau||3.69.19||

Translation

तस्याम् when she, गतायाम् went away, व्रजन्तौ as both were advancing, भ्रातरौ two brothers, अमित्रघ्नौ both being destroyers of enemies, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, ओजसा with their might, गहनम् dense, वनम् woods, आसेदतुः reached.

Meaning

The destroyers of enemies, Rama and Lakshmana of great valour went through the dense forest after she ran away.

AK-69-20Aranya Kanda 69.20

लक्ष्मणस्तु महातेजास्सत्त्ववान् शीलवान् शुचिः। अब्रवीत्प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं भ्रातरं दीप्ततेजसम्।।3.69.20।।

lakṣmaṇastu mahātejāssattvavān śīlavān śuciḥ| abravītprāñjalirvākyṃ bhrātarṃ dīptatejasam||3.69.20||

Translation

महातेजाः of great brilliance, सत्त्ववान् a powerful one, शीलवान् a man of good conduct, शुचिः pure, लक्ष्मणस्तु Lakshmna too, प्राञ्जलिः with folded hands, दीप्ततेजसम् glowing in splendour, भ्रातरम् his brother, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Lakshmana of great brilliance and power, of good conduct and pure character spoke to his highly effulgent brother with folded hands:

AK-69-21Aranya Kanda 69.21

स्पन्दते च दृढं बाहुरुद्विग्नमिव मे मनः। प्रायशश्चाप्यनिष्टानि निमित्तान्युपलक्षये।।3.69.21।।

spandate ca dṛḍhṃ bāhurudvignamiva me manḥ| prāyaśaścāpyaniṣṭāni nimittānyupalakṣaye||3.69.21||

Translation

मे my, बाहुः arm, दृढम् strongly, स्पन्दते is throbbing, मनः mind, उद्विग्नमिव is as if agitated, प्रायशः probably, अनिष्टानि undesirable ones, निमित्तानि omens, उपलक्षये I am observing.

Meaning

My arm is throbbing heavily. My mind is agitated. The omens I see foretell some undesirable events.

AK-69-22Aranya Kanda 69.22

तस्मात्सज्जीभवार्य त्वं कुरुष्व वचनं हितम्। ममैव हि निमित्तानि सद्यश्शंसन्ति सम्भ्रमम्।।3.69.22।।

tasmātsajjībhavārya tvṃ kuruṣva vacanṃ hitam| mamaiva hi nimittāni sadyaśśṃsanti sambhramam||3.69.22||

Translation

आर्य O noble one, तस्मात् therefore, त्वम् you, सज्जीभव be ready, हितम् good, वचनम् words, कुरुष्व you may act upon, निमित्तानि omens, सद्यः presently, सम्भ्रमम् fear, मम I am, शंसन्ति इव हि as though they are forecasting.

Meaning

O noble brother be alert. Heed my words of good advice. The bad omens I see presage perils.

AK-69-23Aranya Kanda 69.23

एष वञ्चुलको नाम पक्षी परमदारुणः। आवयोर्विजयं युद्धे शंसन्निव विनर्दति।।3.69.23।।

eṣa vañculako nāma pakṣī paramadāruṇḥ| āvayorvijayṃ yuddhe śṃsanniva vinardati||3.69.23||

Translation

परमदारुणः extremely dreadful, वञ्चुलको नाम by name Vanchulaka, एषः पक्षी this bird, युद्धे in strife, आवयोः both of us, विजयम् triumph, शंसन्निव as though telling, विनर्दति cries loudly.

Meaning

This vanchulaka bird's loud and dreadful screams suggest our triumph in war.

AK-69-24Aranya Kanda 69.24

तयोरन्वेषतोरेवं सर्वं तद्वनमोजसा। संजज्ञे विपुलः शब्दो प्रभञ्जन्निव तद्वनम्।।3.69.24।।

tayoranveṣatorevṃ sarvṃ tadvanamojasā| sṃjajñe vipulḥ śabdo prabhañjanniva tadvanam||3.69.24||

Translation

तयोः both, एवम् in that manner, ओजसा with strength, सर्वम् all over, तत् वनम् that forest, अन्वेषतोः while both were searching, तत् वनम् that forest, प्रभञ्जन्निव as if shattering, विपुलः very big, शब्दः sound, संजज्ञे broke out.

Meaning

As both the brothers with great prowess were searching for Sita all over, a huge sound exploded as if shattering the forest.

AK-69-25Aranya Kanda 69.25

संवेष्टितमिवात्यर्थं गगनं मातरिश्वना। वनस्य तस्य शब्दोऽभूद्दिवमापूरयन्निव।।3.69.25।।

sṃveṣṭitamivātyarthṃ gaganṃ mātariśvanā| vanasya tasya śabdo'bhūddivamāpūrayanniva||3.69.25||

Translation

गगनम् sky, अत्यर्थम् very much, मातरिश्वना by fierce wind, संवेष्टितमिव was as if covered, तस्य of that, वनस्य of the forest, शब्दः sound, दिवम् sky, आपूरयन्निव was filling, अभूत् rose.

Meaning

It appeared as though a fierce wind rose from the forest and filled the sky.

AK-69-26Aranya Kanda 69.26

तं शब्दं काङ्क्षमाणस्तु रामः कक्षे सहानुजः। ददर्श सुमहाकायं राक्षसं विपुलोदरम्।।3.69.26।।

tṃ śabdṃ kāṅkṣamāṇastu rāmḥ kakṣe sahānujḥ| dadarśa sumahākāyṃ rākṣasṃ vipulodaram||3.69.26||

Translation

तं शब्दम् that sound, काङ्क्षमाणः a man looking for it, सहानुजः along with his brother, रामः Rama, कक्षे on the side, सुमहाकायम् one with a huge body, विपुलोदरम् and a big belly, राक्षसम् demon, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

While looking for the sound, Rama with his brother saw a demon with a huge body and a big belly.

AK-69-27Aranya Kanda 69.27

आसेदतुस्ततस्तत्र तावुभौ प्रमुखे स्थितम्। विवृद्धमशिरोग्रीवं कबन्धमुदरे मुखम्।।3.69.27।।

āsedatustatastatra tāvubhau pramukhe sthitam| vivṛddhamaśirogrīvṃ kabandhamudare mukham||3.69.27||

Translation

ततः then, तौ उभौ both of them, तत्र there, प्रमुखे in front, स्थितम् stood, विवृद्धम् very well grown, अशिरोग्रीवम् without head and neck, उदरे मुखम् with his face in the stomach, कबन्धम् trunk, आसेदतुः reached.

Meaning

Then both the brothers saw a very tall figure with a trunk that stood facing them. He had neither neck nor head. His face was in the stomach.

AK-69-28Aranya Kanda 69.28

रोमभिर्निचितैस्तीक्ष्णैर्महागिरिमिवोछ्रितम्। नीलमेघनिभं रौद्रं मेघस्तनितनिस्वनम्।।3.69.28।।

romabhirnicitaistīkṣṇairmahāgirimivochritam| nīlameghanibhṃ raudrṃ meghastanitanisvanam||3.69.28||

Translation

निचितैः by those spread all over the body, तीक्ष्णैः with sharp bristles, रोमभिः hair, उच्छ्रिचतम् mammoth figure, महागिरिमिव like a big mountain, नीलमेघनिभम् resembling a dark cloud, रौद्रम् a fierce one, मेघस्तनितनिस्वनम् voice like the thunder of the cloud.

Meaning

With sharp bristled hair all over the body, he was a mammoth figure who looked like a mountain resembling a dark cloud with his voice like the thunder.

AK-69-29-30Aranya Kanda 69.29–30 (युग्मम्)

अग्निज्वालानिकाशेन ललाटस्थेन दीप्यता। महापक्ष्मेण पिङ्गेन विपुलेनायतेन च।।3.69.29।। एकेनोरसि घोरेण नयनेनाशुदर्शिना। महादंष्ट्रोपपन्नं तल्लेलिहानं महामुखम्।।3.69.30।।

agnijvālānikāśena lalāṭasthena dīpyatā| mahāpakṣmeṇa piṅgena vipulenāyatena ca||3.69.29|| ekenorasi ghoreṇa nayanenāśudarśinā| mahādṃṣṭropapannṃ tallelihānṃ mahāmukham||3.69.30||

Translation

अग्निज्वालानिकाशेन resembling the flaming fire, ललाटस्थेन on the forehead, दीप्यता by the glowing, महापक्ष्मेण with huge eyelashes, पिङ्गेन with reddishbrown colour, विपुलेन huge, आयतेन च stretched , आशुदर्शिना with instant vision, घोरेण terrific one, उरसि on the chest, एकेन one, नयनेन eye, महादंष्ट्रोपपन्नम् having massive fangs, लेलिहानम् while licking his lips, महामुखम् his huge mouth, तम् him

Meaning

He had a single eye that was reddishbrown in colour resembling flaming fire. It was fixed in the chest. His eyelashes glowed. He had instant vision with massive fangs in his huge mouth. He was licking his lips.

AK-69-31Aranya Kanda 69.31

भक्षयन्तं महाघोरानृक्षसिंहमृगद्विपान्। घोरौ भुजौ विकुर्वाणमुभौ योजनमायतौ।।3.69.31।।

bhakṣayantṃ mahāghorānṛkṣasiṃhamṛgadvipān| ghorau bhujau vikurvāṇamubhau yojanamāyatau||3.69.31||

Translation

महाघोरान् terrific, ऋक्षसिंहमृगद्विपान् bears, lions, deer and elephants, भक्षयन्तम् while eating, योजनम् a Yojana (eight miles), आयतौ long ones, घोरौ both frightening, उभौ both, भूजौ two arms, विकुर्वाणम् as he was stretching.

Meaning

The terrific demon kept eating bears, lions, deer and elephants, catching with both his arms stretching up to one yojana.

AK-69-32Aranya Kanda 69.32

कराभ्यां विविधान्गृह्यऋक्षान्पक्षिगणान्मृगान्। आकर्षन्तं विकर्षन्तमनेकान्मृगयूथपान्।।3.69.32।। स्थितमावृत्य पन्थानं तयोर्भ्रात्रोः प्रपन्नयोः।

karābhyāṃ vividhāngṛhyaṛkṣānpakṣigaṇānmṛgān| ākarṣantṃ vikarṣantamanekānmṛgayūthapān||3.69.32|| sthitamāvṛtya panthānṃ tayorbhrātroḥ prapannayoḥ|

Translation

ऋक्षान् bears, विविधान् various, पक्षिगणान् birds, मृगान् deer, अनेकान् many, मृगयूथपान् herds of deer, कराभ्याम् by both his hands, गृह्य taking, आकर्षन्तम् seizing, विकर्षन्तम् throwing away, प्रपन्नयोः reached there, तयोः both the, भ्रात्रोः of brothers, पन्थानम् path, आवृत्य after blocking, स्थितम् stood.

Meaning

He stood rooted there, catching bears, flocks of birds and deer with both his hands stretching up to one yojana, pulling and pushing them. (Now) he obstructed the path of the two brothers.

AK-69-33-34Aranya Kanda 69.33–34 (युग्मम्)

अथ तौ समभिक्रम्य क्रोशमात्रे ददर्शतुः।।3.69.33।। महान्तं दारुणं भीमं कबन्धं भुजसंवृम्। कबन्धमिव संस्थानादतिघोरप्रदर्शनम्।।3.69.34।।

atha tau samabhikramya krośamātre dadarśatuḥ||3.69.33|| mahāntṃ dāruṇṃ bhīmṃ kabandhṃ bhujasṃvṛm| kabandhamiva sṃsthānādatighorapradarśanam||3.69.34||

Translation

अथ then, तौ both, समभिक्रम्य after covering, क्रोशमात्रे at a distance of one krosa (2 miles), महान्तम् mighty, दारुणम् cruel, भीमम् frightening, भुजसंवृतम् his arms encircling, संस्थानात् from his form, कबन्धमिव like a trunk, घोरप्रदर्शनम् putting is a monstrous appearance, कबन्धम् one demon, Kabandha, ददर्शतुः they both saw.

Meaning

Then the brothers after covering one krosa (2 miles) saw a cruel, fierce, mighty monster named Kabandha looking like a trunk. He had a dreadful appearance and his arms encircled the area.

AK-69-35Aranya Kanda 69.35

स महाबाहुरत्यर्थं प्रसार्य विपुलौ भुजौ। जग्राह सहितावेव राघवौ पीडयन्बलात्।।3.69.35।।

sa mahābāhuratyarthṃ prasārya vipulau bhujau| jagrāha sahitāveva rāghavau pīḍayanbalāt||3.69.35||

Translation

महाबाहुः long armed one, सः he, विपुलौ very big, भुजौ both arms, अत्यर्थम् greatly, प्रसार्य spreading, सहितावेव राघवौ brothers together, बलात् with strength, पीडयन् pressing, जग्राह held.

Meaning

The longarmed demon spread his hands and caught hold of Rama and Lakshmana together by pressing them with all his force.

AK-69-36Aranya Kanda 69.36

खड्गिनौ दृढधन्वानौ तिग्मतेजोवपुर्धरौ। भ्रातरौ विवशं प्राप्तौ कृष्यमाणौ महाबलौ।।3.69.36।।

khaḍginau dṛḍhadhanvānau tigmatejovapurdharau| bhrātarau vivaśṃ prāptau kṛṣyamāṇau mahābalau||3.69.36||

Translation

खड्गिनौ wielders of swords, दृढधन्वानौ with strong bows, तिग्मतेजोवपुर्धरौ with bodies of fiery splendour, महाबलौ mighty, भ्रातरौ both brothers, कृष्यमाणौ both being seized, विवशम् प्राप्तौ both became helpless.

Meaning

The two mighty brothers who wielded swords and strong bows and whose bodies were of fiery splendour became helpless, seized by the hands of Kabandha.

AK-69-37Aranya Kanda 69.37

तत्र धैर्येण शूरस्तु राघवो नैव विव्यथे। बाल्यादनाश्रयत्वाच्च लक्ष्मणस्त्वतिविव्यथे।।3.69.37।। उवाच स विषण्णस्सन्राघवं राघवानुजः।

tatra dhairyeṇa śūrastu rāghavo naiva vivyathe| bālyādanāśrayatvācca lakṣmaṇastvativivyathe||3.69.37|| uvāca sa viṣaṇṇassanrāghavṃ rāghavānujḥ|

Translation

तत्र there, शूरः heroic, राघवः Raghava, धैर्येण with courage, नैव विव्यथे not pained, लक्ष्मणस्तु but Lakshmana, बाल्यात् being younger, आनाश्रयत्वाच्च not having much courage, अतिविव्यथे very worried, सः that, राघवानुजः brother of Rama, विषण्णस्सन् depressed, राघवम् to Rama, उवाच said,

Meaning

Of the two heroes, Rama being courageous was not worried but Lakshmana being younger and not having as much courage, was very much concerned and depressed. He said to Rama:

AK-69-38Aranya Kanda 69.38

पश्य मां वीर विवशं राक्षसस्य वशं गतम्।।3.69.38।। मयैकेन विनिर्युक्तः परिमुञ्चस्व राघव।

paśya māṃ vīra vivaśṃ rākṣasasya vaśṃ gatam||3.69.38|| mayaikena viniryuktḥ parimuñcasva rāghava|

Translation

वीर heroic Rama, विवशम् helpless, राक्षसस्य वशम् under the control of the demon, गतम् gone, माम् me, पश्य see, राघव Rama, एकेन by one alone, मया by me, विनिर्युक्तः offering me, परिमुञ्चस्व set yourself free.

Meaning

O heroic Rama see how helpless I am under the control of the demon. Set yourself free, leaving me alone and using me as an offering.

AK-69-39Aranya Kanda 69.39

मां हि भूतबलिं दत्वा पलायस्व यथासुखम्।।3.69.39।। अधिगन्तासि वैदेहीमचिरेणेति मे मतिः।

māṃ hi bhūtabaliṃ datvā palāyasva yathāsukham||3.69.39|| adhigantāsi vaidehīmacireṇeti me matiḥ|

Translation

माम् me, भूतबलिम् as an offering, दत्वा after giving, यथासुखम् happily, पलायस्व you may run away, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, अचिरेण soon, अधिगन्तासि will attain her, इति this is, मे my, मतिः opinion.

Meaning

Giving me to this monstor as an offering, you may run away happily. I think you will soon obtain Vaidehi.

AK-69-40Aranya Kanda 69.40

प्रतिलभ्य च काकुत्स्थ पितृपैतामहीं महीम्।।3.69.40।। तत्र मां राम राज्यस्थस्स्मर्तुमर्हसि सर्वदा।

pratilabhya ca kākutstha pitṛpaitāmahīṃ mahīm||3.69.40|| tatra māṃ rāma rājyasthassmartumarhasi sarvadā|

Translation

काकुत्थ्स O scion of Kakutstha dynasty, राम Rama, पितृपैतामहीम् heriditary reign, महीम् land, प्रतिलभ्य च on getting, तत्र there, राज्यस्थः as one ruling the country, सर्वदा always, माम् me, स्मर्तुम् remember, अर्हसि should.

Meaning

O scion of the Kakutstha dynasty, on getting the hereditary kingdom and ruling over it you should always remember me.

AK-69-41Aranya Kanda 69.41

लक्ष्मणेनैवमुक्तस्तु रामस्सौमित्रिमब्रवीत्।।3.69.41।। मा स्म त्रासं कृथा वीर न हि त्वादृग्विषीदति।

lakṣmaṇenaivamuktastu rāmassaumitrimabravīt||3.69.41|| mā sma trāsṃ kṛthā vīra na hi tvādṛgviṣīdati|

Translation

लक्ष्मणेन by Lakshmana, एवम् in that way, उक्तः having been said, रामः Rama, सौमित्रिम् to Soumitri, अब्रवीत् said, वीर heroic Lakshmana, त्रासम् fear, मा स्म कृथाः do not entertain, त्वादृक् a hero like you, न विषीदति हि should not get desperate.

Meaning

O valiant Lakshmana, a hero like you should not get desparate. said Rama to Saumitri when he was thus entreated by Lakshmana.

AK-69-42Aranya Kanda 69.42

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे क्रूरो भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ।।3.69.42।। पप्रच्छ घननिर्घोषः कबन्धो दानवोत्तमः।

etasminnantare krūro bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau||3.69.42|| papraccha ghananirghoṣḥ kabandho dānavottamḥ|

Translation

एतस्मिन् अन्तरे in the meanwhile, क्रूरः cruel one, दानवोत्तमः foremost of the demons, कबन्धः Kabandha, घननिर्घोषः rumbling like thunder, भ्रातरौ to the brothers, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, पप्रच्छ questioned.

Meaning

In the meanwhile the foremost of the demons, Kabandha, rumbling like thunder questioned the brothers, Rama and Lakshmana:

AK-69-43Aranya Kanda 69.43

कौ युवां वृषभस्कन्धौ महाखड्गधनुर्धरौ।।3.69.43।। घोरं देशमिमं प्राप्तौ मम भक्षावुपस्थितौ।

kau yuvāṃ vṛṣabhaskandhau mahākhaḍgadhanurdharau||3.69.43|| ghorṃ deśamimṃ prāptau mama bhakṣāvupasthitau|

Translation

वृषभस्कन्धौ whose shoulders are comparable to a bull, महाखड्गधनुर्धरौ both holding great sword and bow, घोरम् dreadful, इमं देशम् this place, प्राप्तौ reached here, युवाम् you both, कौ who are you, मम for me, भक्षौ both, उपस्थितौ have reached.

Meaning

Who are you with bulllike shoulders, wielding big swords, bows and arrows? By coming to this place you have become my food.

AK-69-44Aranya Kanda 69.44

वदतं कार्यमिह वां किमर्थं चागतौ युवाम्।।3.69.44।। इमं देशमनुप्राप्तौ क्षुधार्तस्येह तिष्ठतः।

vadatṃ kāryamiha vāṃ kimarthṃ cāgatau yuvām||3.69.44|| imṃ deśamanuprāptau kṣudhārtasyeha tiṣṭhatḥ|

Translation

इह here, वाम् to you both, कार्यम् work, वदतम् speak, युवाम् both, किमर्थम् for what purpose?, आगतौ have come, क्षुधार्तस्य for the hungry, इह here, तिष्ठतः while staying here, इमम् this, देशम् place, अनुप्राप्तौ came at the right time.

Meaning

For what purpose have you come? What work have you here ? You have come at the right time as my food, since I am hungry.

AK-69-45Aranya Kanda 69.45

सबाणचापखड्गौ च तीक्ष्णशृङ्गाविवर्षभौ।।3.69.45।। ममास्यमनुसम्प्राप्तौ दुर्लभं जीवितं पुनः।

sabāṇacāpakhaḍgau ca tīkṣṇaśṛṅgāvivarṣabhau||3.69.45|| mamāsyamanusamprāptau durlabhṃ jīvitṃ punḥ|

Translation

सबाणचापखड्गौ holding bows and arrows and swords, तीक्ष्णशृङ्गौ two sharp horns, ऋषभौ इव like bulls, मम my, आस्यम् mouth, अनुसम्प्राप्तौ you both have reached, पुनः again, जीवितम् lives, दुर्लभम् impossible.

Meaning

Holding bows, arrows and swords, looking like bulls with pointed horns you have entered my mouth. It is impossible for you to live any more.

AK-69-46Aranya Kanda 69.46

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कबन्धस्य दुरात्मनः।।3.69.46।। उवाच लक्ष्मणं रामो मुखेन परिशुष्यता।

tasya tadvacanṃ śrutvā kabandhasya durātmanḥ||3.69.46|| uvāca lakṣmaṇṃ rāmo mukhena pariśuṣyatā|

Translation

दुरात्मनः of the evilminded, तस्य कबन्धस्य that Kabandha's, तत् that, वचनम् word, श्रुत्वा on hearing, रामः Rama, परिशुष्यता by dried up, मुखेन by mouth, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmna, अब्रवीत् said:

On hearing the words of the evilminded Kabandha, Rama said to Lakshmana with dried up mouth:

AK-69-47Aranya Kanda 69.47

कृच्छ्रात् कृच्छ्रतरं प्राप्य दारुणं सत्यविक्रमः।।3.69.47।। व्यसनं जीवितान्ताय प्राप्तमप्राप्य तां प्रियाम्।

kṛcchrāt kṛcchratarṃ prāpya dāruṇṃ satyavikramḥ||3.69.47|| vyasanṃ jīvitāntāya prāptamaprāpya tāṃ priyām|

Translation

सत्यविक्रम one whose valour is truth, कृच्छ्रात् from one calamity, कृच्छ्रतरम् to a greater calamity, प्राप्य having reached, प्रियाम् beloved, ताम् her, अप्राप्य having lost, जीवितान्ताय for ending life, दारुणम् unbearable, व्यसनम् crisis, प्राप्तम् experienced.

Meaning

O Lakshmana, your valour is truth.We have gone through from one calamity to a greater one without finding the beloved Sita. Now we have landed into a terrible crisis which will put an end to our own life.

AK-69-48Aranya Kanda 69.48

कालस्य सुमहद्वीर्यं सर्वभूतेषु लक्ष्मण।।3.69.48।। त्वां च मां च नरव्याघ्र व्यसनैः पश्य मोहितौ।

kālasya sumahadvīryṃ sarvabhūteṣu lakṣmaṇa||3.69.48|| tvāṃ ca māṃ ca naravyāghra vyasanaiḥ paśya mohitau|

Translation

नरव्याघ्र tiger among men, लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, सर्वभूतेषु for all beings, कालस्य of the time, वीर्यम् power, सुमहत् great, व्यसनैः by calamity, मोहितौ afflicted, त्वां च yourself, मां me, च and, पश्य see.

Meaning

O tiger among men see how powerful the might of time is for all beings Just see yourself and myself afflicted wth this great calamity.

AK-69-49-50Aranya Kanda 69.49–50 (युग्मम्)

नातिभारोस्ति कालस्य सर्वभूतेषु लक्ष्मण।।3.69.49।। शूराश्च बलवन्तश्च कृतास्त्राश्च रणाजिरे। कालाभिपन्नास्सीदन्ति यथा वालुकसेतवः।।3.69.50।।

nātibhārosti kālasya sarvabhūteṣu lakṣmaṇa||3.69.49|| śūrāśca balavantaśca kṛtāstrāśca raṇājire| kālābhipannāssīdanti yathā vālukasetavḥ||3.69.50||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, कालस्य of the time, सर्वभूतेषु over all creatures, अतिभारः great weight, नास्ति not there, शूराश्च brave people, बलवन्तश्च or strong men, रणाजिरे कृतास्त्राश्च those who know the use of arms in the war, कालाभिपन्नाः by the force of time, वालुकसेतवः यथा like barriers built with sand, सीदतन्ति make way.

Meaning

O Lakshmana look at the power of time over all creatures There is nothing too heavy for time. Even those who know the use of arms in war, or are brave or strong enough, cannot withstand the force of time like the barriers built with sand.

AK-69-51Aranya Kanda 69.51

इति ब्रुवाणो दृढसत्यविक्रमो महायशा दाशरथिः प्रतापवान्। अवेक्ष्य सौमित्रिमुदग्रपौरुषं स्थिरां तदा स्वां मतिमात्मनाऽकरोत्।।3.69.51।।

iti bruvāṇo dṛḍhasatyavikramo mahāyaśā dāśarathiḥ pratāpavān| avekṣya saumitrimudagrapauruṣṃ sthirāṃ tadā svāṃ matimātmanā'karot||3.69.51||

Translation

दृढसत्यविक्रमः Firm in the strength of truth, महायशाः illustrious, प्रतापवान् powerful, दाशरथिः Dasaratha's son (Rama), इति thus, ब्रुवाणः spoke, उदग्रपौरुषम् of mighty manliness, सौमित्रिम् Saumitri, अवेक्ष्य on seeing, तदा then, स्वाम् his own, स्थिराम् determined, मतिम् mind, आत्मना himself, अकरोत् fixed.

Meaning

Firm in the strength of truth, famous and powerful Rama, son of Dasaratha, determined to act with a steadfast mind, spoke to Lakshmana of mighty manliness on seeing him. इत्यार्ष श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे एकोनसप्ततितमस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the sixtyninth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
