AK-3-1Aranya Kanda 3.1

इत्युक्त्वा लक्ष्मणश्श्रीमान्विराधे प्रहसन्निव। कोभवान्वनमभ्येत्य चरिष्यसि यथासुखम्।।3.3.1।।

ityuktvā lakṣmaṇaśśrīmānvirādhe prahasanniva| kobhavānvanamabhyetya cariṣyasi yathāsukham||3.3.1||

Translation

इति उकत्वा having said so, लक्ष्मण श्रीमान् graceful Lakshmana, प्रहसन्निव with a smile, विराधे at Viradha, कः भवान् who are you? वनमभ्येत्य having come to the forest, यथासुखम् at will, चरिष्यसि you are roaming about.

Meaning

Graceful Lakshmana asked Viradha with a smile, Who are you wandering in the forest at will ?.

AK-3-2Aranya Kanda 3.2

अथोवाच पुनर्वाक्यं विराधः पूरयन्वनम्। पृच्छतो मम हि ब्रूतं कौ युवां क्व गमिष्यथः।।3.3.2.।।

athovāca punarvākyṃ virādhḥ pūrayanvanam| pṛcchato mama hi brūtṃ kau yuvāṃ kva gamiṣyathḥ||3.3.2.||

Translation

अथ then, विराथः Viradha, वनम् forest, पूरयन् filling with echoes, पुनः again, वाक्यम् words, उवाच said, पृच्छतः asked, मम me, ब्रूतम् whereabouts, युवाम् you both, कौ who are you, क्व where, गमिष्यथः going.

Meaning

Then Viradha with his voice filling the forest said, Instead of asking about me you both should speak out who you are and where you are going

AK-3-3Aranya Kanda 3.3

तमुवाच ततो रामो राक्षसं ज्वलिताननम्। पृच्छन्तं सुमहातेजा इक्ष्वाकुकुलमात्मनः।।3.3.3।।

tamuvāca tato rāmo rākṣasṃ jvalitānanam| pṛcchantṃ sumahātejā ikṣvākukulamātmanḥ||3.3.3||

Translation

ततः thereafter, सुमहातेजाः highly effulgent, रामः Rama, पृच्छन्तम् when asked, ज्वलिताननम् burning countenance, तं राक्षसम् to that demon, आत्मनः his, इक्ष्वाकुकुलम् Ikshvaku family, उवाच described.

Meaning

Questioned by the demon, who bore a burning countenance, the highly effulgent Rama introduced his Ikshvaku family:

AK-3-4Aranya Kanda 3.4

क्षत्रियौ वृत्तसम्पन्नौ विद्धि नौ वनगोचरौ। त्वां तु वेदितुमिच्छावः कस्त्वं चरसि दण्डकान्।।3.3.4।।

kṣatriyau vṛttasampannau viddhi nau vanagocarau| tvāṃ tu veditumicchāvḥ kastvṃ carasi daṇḍakān||3.3.4||

Translation

नौ both of us, वृत्तसम्पन्नौ endowed with good lineage, वनगोचरौ both moving in the forest, क्षत्रियौ two kshatriyas, विद्धि know, त्वां तु about you, वेदितुम् wish to know, इच्छावः we both wish, दण्डकान् in the Dandaka forest, चरसि you are going about, त्वम् you, कः tell.

Meaning

Know us to be both kshatriyas, endowed with a good lineage and yet moving in the forest. We both wish to know, who you are and why you are going about in Dandaka forest?

AK-3-5Aranya Kanda 3.5

तमुवाच विराधस्तु रामं सत्यपराक्रमम्। हन्त वक्ष्यामि ते राजन्निबोध मम राघव।।3.3.5।।

tamuvāca virādhastu rāmṃ satyaparākramam| hanta vakṣyāmi te rājannibodha mama rāghava||3.3.5||

Translation

विराधस्तु Viradha also, सत्यपराक्रमम् one with truth as his prowess, तं रामम् to that Rama, उवाच said, हन्त O, राजन् to king, राघव Rama, ते to you, वक्ष्यामि I will tell, मम myself, निबोध know.

Meaning

Then Viradha said to Rama whose truth was his strength, I will tell you who I am. O, listen:

AK-3-6Aranya Kanda 3.6

पुत्रः किल जयस्याहं माता मम शतह्रदा। विराध इति मामाहुः पृथिव्यां सर्वराक्षसाः।।3.3.6।।

putrḥ kila jayasyāhṃ mātā mama śatahradā| virādha iti māmāhuḥ pṛthivyāṃ sarvarākṣasāḥ||3.3.6||

Translation

अहम् I am, जयस्य Jaya's, पुत्रः son, किल indeed, शतह्रदा Satahrada, मम my, माता mother, पृथिव्याम् on this earth, सर्वराक्षसाः all the demons, माम् me, विराधः Viradha इति so, आहुः call me.

Meaning

I am indeed son to Jaya. My mother is Satahrada. Verily all the demons on this earth call me Viradha.

AK-3-7Aranya Kanda 3.7

तपसा चाभिसम्प्राप्ता ब्रह्मणो हि प्रसादजा। शस्त्रेणावध्यता लोकेऽच्छेद्याभेद्यत्वमेव च।।3.3.7।।

tapasā cābhisamprāptā brahmaṇo hi prasādajā| śastreṇāvadhyatā loke'cchedyābhedyatvameva ca||3.3.7||

Translation

तपसा through penance, ब्रह्मणः from Brahma, प्रसादजा bestowed by his pleasure, लोके in this world, शस्त्रेण with any weapon, अवध्यता not to be killed, अभिसम्प्राप्ता has been acquired, अच्छेद्याभेद्यत्वमेव च not to be cut or broken by any.

Meaning

By the grace of Lord Brahma I was bestowed with this prowess through my penance. In this world none can kill me with a weapon nor split nor cut me to pieces.

AK-3-8Aranya Kanda 3.8

उत्सृज्य प्रमदामेनामनपेक्षौ यथागतम्। त्वरमाणौ पलायेथां न वां जीवितमाददे।। 3.3.8।।

utsṛjya pramadāmenāmanapekṣau yathāgatam| tvaramāṇau palāyethāṃ na vāṃ jīvitamādade|| 3.3.8||

Translation

एनाम् this lady, प्रमदाम् woman, उत्सृज्य on giving up, अनपेक्षौ without claiming her, त्वरमाणौ quickly, यथागतम् to the place where you came from, पलायेथाम् both of you may run, वाम् to you both, जीवितम् life, न आददे I will not take away.

Meaning

Therefore, leave this lady and run away to the place you came from. I will not take away your life .

AK-3-9Aranya Kanda 3.9

तं रामः प्रत्युवाचेदं कोपसंरक्तलोचनः। राक्षसं विकृताकारं विराधं पापचेतसम्।।3.3.9।।

tṃ rāmḥ pratyuvācedṃ kopasṃraktalocanḥ| rākṣasṃ vikṛtākārṃ virādhṃ pāpacetasam||3.3.9||

Translation

रामः Rama, कोपसंरक्तलोचनः with eyes reddened due to anger, विकृताकारम् with deformed appearance, पापचेतसम् with sinful intentions, तम् him, विराधं राक्षसम् to demon Viradha, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Meaning

With eyes reddened with anger Rama replied to the sinful, deformed Viradha:

AK-3-10Aranya Kanda 3.10

क्षुद्र धिक्त्वां तु हीनार्थं मृत्युमन्वेषसे ध्रुवम्। रणे प्राप्स्यसे सन्तिष्ठ न मे जीवन् गमिष्यासि।।3.3.10।।

kṣudra dhiktvāṃ tu hīnārthṃ mṛtyumanveṣase dhruvam| raṇe prāpsyase santiṣṭha na me jīvan gamiṣyāsi||3.3.10||

Translation

क्षुद्र O vile creature, हीनार्थम् mean, त्वाम् you, धिक् fie upon, ध्रुवम् surely, मृत्युम् death, अन्वेषसे you are seeking, सन्तिष्ठ stay, रणे in war, प्राप्स्यसे you will attain, जीवन् while being alive, मे me, न गमिष्यासि you will not go.

Meaning

O vile, mean creature surely you are seeking death. Wait, you will meet it in the fight.

AK-3-11Aranya Kanda 3.11

ततः सज्यं धनुः कृत्वा रामस्सुनिशिताञ्छरान्। सुशीघ्रमभिसन्धाय राक्षसं निजघान ह।।3.3.11।।

tatḥ sajyṃ dhanuḥ kṛtvā rāmassuniśitāñcharān| suśīghramabhisandhāya rākṣasṃ nijaghāna ha||3.3.11||

Translation

ततः then, रामः Rama, धनुः bow, सज्यम् strung, कृत्वा after setting, सुनिशितान् sharp, शरान् arrows, सुशीघ्रम् quickly, अभिसन्धाय after aiming, राक्षसम् rakshasa, निजघान hit, ह indeed.

Meaning

Then Rama strung his bow immediately, shot the sharp arrows at Viradha and hit him verily.

AK-3-12Aranya Kanda 3.12

धनुषा ज्यागुणवता सप्त बाणान्मुमोच ह। रुक्मपुङ्खान्महावेगान्सुपर्णानिलतुल्यगान्।।3.3.12।।

dhanuṣā jyāguṇavatā sapta bāṇānmumoca ha| rukmapuṅkhānmahāvegānsuparṇānilatulyagān||3.3.12||

Translation

धनुषा bow, ज्यागुणवता string tied, महावेगान् swift ones, सुपर्णानिलतुल्यगान् in speed comparable to Garuda and the windgod, रुक्मपुङ्खान् with bright feathers, सप्त बाणान् seven arrows, मुमोच ह verily released.

Meaning

From his bow strung tight, Rama shot seven swift, goldenfeathered arrows comparable to Garuda and the Windgod in speed.

AK-3-13Aranya Kanda 3.13

ते शरीरं विराधस्य भित्त्वाबर्हिणवाससः। निपेतुश्शोणितादिग्धा धरण्यां पावकोपमाः।।3.3.13।।

te śarīrṃ virādhasya bhittvābarhiṇavāsasḥ| nipetuśśoṇitādigdhā dharaṇyāṃ pāvakopamāḥ||3.3.13||

Translation

पावकोपमाः looking like fire, ते they, बर्हिणवाससः arrows tied with peacock feathers, विराधस्य Viradha's, शरीरम् body, भित्त्वा after piercing, शोणितादिग्धाः drenched in blood, धरण्याम् on the ground, निपेतुः fell.

Meaning

The arrows tied with peacockfeathers, looking like fire, pierced the body of Viradha which, drenched in blood, fell on the ground.

AK-3-14Aranya Kanda 3.14

स विद्धो न्यस्य वैदेहीं शूलमुद्यम्य राक्षसः। अभ्यद्रवत्सुसङ्कृद्धस्तदा रामं सलक्ष्मणम्।।3.3.14।।

sa viddho nyasya vaidehīṃ śūlamudyamya rākṣasḥ| abhyadravatsusaṅkṛddhastadā rāmṃ salakṣmaṇam||3.3.14||

Translation

विद्धः Pierced, सः he, राक्षसः that rakshasa, तदा then, वैदेहीम् Sita, न्यस्य left her, शूलम् a spear, उद्यम्य after lifting, सुसङ्कृद्धः with intense anger, सलक्ष्मणम् with Lakshmana, रामम् towards Rama, अभ्यद्रवत् ran towards.

Meaning

Hit by Rama and Lakshmana, the enraged demon left Vaidehi, lifted a sharp spear and ran towards them.

AK-3-15Aranya Kanda 3.15

स विनद्य महानादं शूलं शक्रध्वजोपमम्। प्रगृह्याशोभत तदा व्यात्तानन इवान्तकः।।3.3.15।।

sa vinadya mahānādṃ śūlṃ śakradhvajopamam| pragṛhyāśobhata tadā vyāttānana ivāntakḥ||3.3.15||

Translation

तदा then, सः that, महानादम् loud noise, विनद्य producing, शक्रध्वजोपमम् like Indra's banner, शूलम् spike, प्रगृह्य taking, व्यात्ताननः with wide open mouth, अन्तकः god of death, इव like, अशोभत shone.

Meaning

The demon who produced a great noise with his wide open mouth resembled the god of death. He lifted a sharp spike that looked like Indra's banner.

AK-3-16Aranya Kanda 3.16

अथ तौ भ्रातरौ दीप्तं शरवर्षं ववर्षतुः। विराधे राक्षसे तस्मिन् कालान्तकयमोपमे।।3.3.16।।

atha tau bhrātarau dīptṃ śaravarṣṃ vavarṣatuḥ| virādhe rākṣase tasmin kālāntakayamopame||3.3.16||

Translation

अथ and then, तौ both, भ्रातरौ brothers, कालान्तकयमोपमे looking like Yama, the god of death, तस्मिन् at him, राक्षसे at that demon, विराधे on Viradha, दीप्तम् bright, शरवर्षम् rain of arrows, ववर्षतुः showered.

Meaning

And then both the brothers showered bright arrows on the demon Viradha who looked like Yama, the god of death.

AK-3-17Aranya Kanda 3.17

स प्रहस्य महारौद्रः स्थित्वाजृम्भत राक्षसः। जृम्भमाणस्य ते बाणाः कायान्निष्पेतुराशुगाः।।3.3.17।।

sa prahasya mahāraudrḥ sthitvājṛmbhata rākṣasḥ| jṛmbhamāṇasya te bāṇāḥ kāyānniṣpeturāśugāḥ||3.3.17||

Translation

महारौद्रः extremely frightening, सः राक्षस: that rakshasa, प्रहस्य after laughing, स्थित्वा stood there, अजृम्भत yawned, जृम्भमाणस्य as he was yawning, कायात् from the body, आशुगाः swiftmoving, ते बाणाः those arrows, निष्पेतुः fell down.

Meaning

The demon who was extremely frightening stood there, laughing and yawning. As he yawned, all the swiftlyflying arrows fell out of his body.

AK-3-18Aranya Kanda 3.18

स्पर्शात्तु वरदानेन प्राणान्सम्रोध्य राक्षसः। विराधः शूलमुद्यम्य राघवावभ्यधावत।।3.3.18।।

sparśāttu varadānena prāṇānsamrodhya rākṣasḥ| virādhḥ śūlamudyamya rāghavāvabhyadhāvata||3.3.18||

Translation

राक्षसः demon, विराधः Viradha, वरदानेन by virtue of a boon, स्पर्शात् तु by touch as well, प्राणान् (Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana, and Samana) vital breath, संरोध्य controlled, शूलम् spike, उद्यम्य on taking out, राघवौ Rama and Lakshmana, अभ्यधावत ran after.

Meaning

By virtue of a boon Viradha, the demon, controlled the vital breath of his body by a mere touch and, raising the spike, ran towards the two Raghava princes.

AK-3-19Aranya Kanda 3.19

तच्छूलं वज्रसङ्काशं गगने ज्वलनोपमम्। द्वाभ्यां शराभ्यां चिच्छेद रामः शस्त्रभृतांवरः।।3.3.19।।

tacchūlṃ vajrasaṅkāśṃ gagane jvalanopamam| dvābhyāṃ śarābhyāṃ ciccheda rāmḥ śastrabhṛtāṃvarḥ||3.3.19||

Translation

शस्त्रभृताम् among the wielders of bows, वरः best, रामः Rama, ज्वलनोपमम् like burning fire, वज्रसङ्काशम् resembling thunderbolt, तत् that, शूलम् spike, द्वाभ्याम् with two, शराभ्याम् arrows, गगने in the sky, चिच्छेद broke asunder.

Meaning

With two arrows, Rama, the best among wielders of weapons, broke down the spike in the sky burning like fire, and resembling the thunderbolt of Indra.

AK-3-20Aranya Kanda 3.20

तद्रामविशिखच्छिन्नं शूलं तस्यकराद्भुवि। पपाताशनिना छिन्नं मेरोरिव शिलातलम्।।3.3.20।।

tadrāmaviśikhacchinnṃ śūlṃ tasyakarādbhuvi| papātāśaninā chinnṃ meroriva śilātalam||3.3.20||

Translation

रामविशिखैः by Rama's arrow, छिन्नम् broken, तत् शूलम् spike, भुवि on the ground, अपतत् fell, अशनिना by the thunder, छिन्नम् broken into pieces, मेरोः of mount Meru, शिलातलम् इव like a slab, पपात fell down.

Meaning

The spike, broken down by Rama's arrow, fell like a slab of mount Meru splintered by Indra's thunder.

AK-3-21Aranya Kanda 3.21

तौ खड्गौ क्षिप्रमुद्यम्य कृष्णसर्पोपमौशुभौ। तूर्णमापेततुस्तस्य तदा प्रहरतां बलात्।।3.3.21।।

tau khaḍgau kṣipramudyamya kṛṣṇasarpopamauśubhau| tūrṇamāpetatustasya tadā praharatāṃ balāt||3.3.21||

Translation

तदा then, तौ both, उद्यतौ coming on, कृष्णसर्पोपमौ both looking like black serpents, शुभौ auspicious, ख़ड्गौ the two swords, क्षिप्रम् quickly, उद्यम्य raising, तूर्णम् at once, तस्य at him, आपेततुः fell upon, बलात् strongly, प्रहरताम् struck तस्य him.

Meaning

Then both Rama and Lakshmana quickly raised their swords which looked like black serpents and at once fell upon the demon who was going to strike with great force.

AK-3-22Aranya Kanda 3.22

स वध्यमानः सुभृशं भुजाभ्यां परिरभ्यतौ। अप्रकम्प्यौ नरव्याघ्रौ रौद्रः प्रस्थातुमैच्छत।।3.3.22।।

sa vadhyamānḥ subhṛśṃ bhujābhyāṃ parirabhyatau| aprakampyau naravyāghrau raudrḥ prasthātumaicchata||3.3.22||

Translation

वध्यमानः being struck, रौद्रः angry one, सः he, अप्रकम्प्यौ the unshakeable two, नरव्याघ्रौ two tigerlike men, तौ both, भुजाभ्याम् with his arms, सुभृशम् tightly, परिगृह्य holding, प्रस्थातुम् to set out, ऐच्छत intended.

Meaning

Struck down, the angry demon tightly caught hold of both of them under his arms and wanted to set out, carrying Rama and Lakshmana, the two unshakeable tigers among men.

AK-3-23Aranya Kanda 3.23

तस्याभिप्रायमाज्ञाय रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत्। वहत्वयमलं तावत्पथाऽनेन तु राक्षसः।।3.3.23।।

tasyābhiprāyamājñāya rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt| vahatvayamalṃ tāvatpathā'nena tu rākṣasḥ||3.3.23||

Translation

तस्य his, अभिप्रायम् intention, आज्ञाय having understood, रामः Rama, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, अब्रवीत् said, अयं राक्षसः this demon, अनेन पथा by this path, अलम् no need to prohibit, वहतु तावत् let him carry us.

Meaning

Rama understood the intention of the demon and said to Lakshmana, Let him go his way, no need to stop him.

AK-3-24Aranya Kanda 3.24

यथा चेच्छति सौमित्रे तथा वहतु राक्षसः। अयमेव हि नः पन्था येन याति निशाचरः।।3.3.24।।

yathā cecchati saumitre tathā vahatu rākṣasḥ| ayameva hi nḥ panthā yena yāti niśācarḥ||3.3.24||

Translation

सौमित्रे O Lakshmana, राक्षसः the demon, यथा as, इच्छति wishes to go, तथा like that, वहतु let him carry, निशाचरः nightstalker येन by which ever, याति moves, अयमेव this alone, सः such, पन्थाः हि direction only.

Meaning

O Lakshmana, let the nightstalker go the way he wishes. That is, in fact, our path.

AK-3-25Aranya Kanda 3.25

स तु स्वबलवीर्येण समुत्क्षिप्य निशाचरः। बालाविव स्कन्धगतौ चकारातिबलोद्धतः।।3.3.25।।

sa tu svabalavīryeṇa samutkṣipya niśācarḥ| bālāviva skandhagatau cakārātibaloddhatḥ||3.3.25||

Translation

अतिबलोद्धतः one puffed with great strength, सः that Viradha, निशाचरः तु rakshasa on his part, स्वबलवीर्येण by his own strength, समुत्क्षिप्य after lifting, बालाविव like two children, स्कन्धगतौ on both his shoulders, चकार made.

Meaning

Puffed up with his own great strength, Viradha lifted them and placed them on his shoulders as though they were two children.

AK-3-26Aranya Kanda 3.26

तावारोप्य ततः स्कन्धं राघवौ रजनीचरः। विराधो विनदन्घोरं जगामाभिमुखो वनम्।।3.3.26।।

tāvāropya tatḥ skandhṃ rāghavau rajanīcarḥ| virādho vinadanghorṃ jagāmābhimukho vanam||3.3.26||

Translation

ततः then, रजनीचरः the nightstalker, विराधः Viradha, तौ both राघवौ Rama and Lakshmana, स्कन्धम् on the shoulders, आरोप्य keeping, घोरम् dreadfuly, विनदन् while screaming, वनम् अभिमुखः towards the forest, जगाम proceeded.

Meaning

Then the nightstalker proceeded towards the forest, carrying both the scions of the Raghu race on his shouldersroaring.
